Hi!
*WARNINGS* This does touch on Dazai's suicidal tendencies, self harm, drinking and other bad coping mechanisms, they're more vague than detailed, but I don't want anyone uncomfortable reading this.
A few things:
*Fyodor does not appear till chapter 4, this is *definitely* Fyozai end game, there's just some detours along the way
*Dazai & Chuuya have never dated etc in this universe, they just have a really good friendship
*Atsushi joined the Agency about two years before Dazai, he is still the same age as canon
*The Guild conflict has been moved up a year (Dazai is 23) and what's left of them does not get involved in anything else plotwise
*I know the bulk of Dazai's canon problems would require a lot of work to get past/manage and to continue to thrive, I wanted to touch on it, but I'll be honest, him dealing with it got a bit squished and probably a lot quicker than he really needed but that is not what this fic was meant to focus on
*Fyodor's plot gets delayed and goes vague, he's still a threat, but not as bad in canon,
*This deals with some aspects of trying to get pregnant (including low/infertility) they are all tied to fictional elements of the characters/omegaverse, rather than reality, but I don't want anyone uncomfortable
*the actual birth (chapter 6) will be skipped
*omega's in this universe were basically made to be bred, so they have shorter pregnancies (6 months - first scan is at 8 weeks instead of 12, and gender scan is at 4 months instead of 6 months) after birth they pass out for a few hours and their body sort of resets, they can usually go into heat again within 3 months of birth
*Cwtch/Cwtched/Cwtching - It's a Welsh word, here it's meaning a cuddle or hug (but like nicer, cosier and more personal than a hug if that makes any sense?) The word can also mean a small cupboard/cubbyhole
*This is part 1, them raising their family will come (soon-ish) in another fic :)
Dazai had never anticipated his life turning out like this. When he had left the Port Mafia at eighteen, he never thought he would go back, at least not willingly. He wanted to spend his life in the light, find a nice Alpha to settle down with, and spend his days raising their children. But when Mori went mad just after Dazai's twenty-first birthday, with the help his ex-co workers and the Armed Detective Agency, the threat was dealt with and he became the Port Mafia Boss.
His first year was tough, many of Mori's underlings did not take well to an Omega leading them. They did not survive the year. His next move was to take on the Armed Detective Agency as a part of the Port Mafia, they still had their main office, but most of the staff spent their days at the Port Mafia headquarters. They also had the opportunity to move out of the Agency Dorms into the Port Mafia headquarters if they so wished, with Dazai refurbishing the empty floors into bedrooms with a shared kitchen area. Most of them split their time at the Agency dorms and headquarters, depending on what they were working on.
Dazai himself chose to live at the headquarters, the top floor had been left abandoned for a number of years, it consisted of two self-contained flats running the length of the building, Dazai had them refurbished, with new kitchens and bathrooms fitted in both flats.
By the time he turned twenty-two he had cemented himself as the leader of the Port Mafia, and patron to the Armed Detective Agency. No one dared question his authority and both organisations were thriving. Which led him to where he was now, sat in Yosano's new, high end medical centre, that took up an entire floor of the headquarters. Chuuya, as his main bodyguard was waiting outside the door.
"So, what can I do for you today Dazai?" Yosano asked
"I want a baby."
"I'm sorry, I must have misheard, say that again?"
"A baby, I want, no I need to have a baby Yosano."
Despite the serious look on Dazai's face, Yosano found herself falling off her chair, tears in her eyes as she laughed at Dazai. Recovering she faced him again,
"Oh, you're serious, aren't you?"
"Yes, both of our organisations are thriving right now, but there's no clear future. I am not leaving my Mafia to fall into the hands of whoever decides to kill me. Two mercy killings of Bosses in less than ten years isn't a good look for any organisation. So, I thought to myself, I am an omega, why can't I just produce my own heir?"
"Because you're an alcoholic, drug addicted, suicidal," she paused, taking in his appearance, "You don't weigh enough to carry a healthy child either, hell I don't even know how you have such regular heats, the abuse your body takes."
Dazai narrowed his eyes, "I am not any of those things. I drink in a normal manner and I eat plenty thank you very much"
"Right. How about we call Chuuya in and see the truth, shall we?"
"Fine." Dazai pouted.
Yosano got up, opened the door and called Chuuya in. He stayed by the closed door, always on alert.
"Sorry to bring you in Chuuya, but.."
"Dazai's convinced he wants a baby but can barely take care of himself?" Chuuya finished for her
"Yes" she smiled.
"So Dazai, when was the last time you drank alcohol?"
"Yesterday evening, I had a small glass of Whiskey to relax before bed"
"He drank a bottle of sake last night, and started his morning with Whiskey."
"Hmm, how about your last meal or snack?"
"I had a small salad for dinner yesterday."
"Pfft, the last thing I saw pass your lips was a slice of toast, about three days ago."
"How about the last time you took drugs?"
"Four years ago,"
"Really?" Yosano couldn't hold back her surprise, looking to Chuuya to confirm, who just nodded. Dazai's voice was quiet when he replied,
"Odasaku's death hit me hard, a few days after his death I took it too far. I woke up three weeks later in a hospital in the countryside. I haven't touched anything illegal since. I did slip up on the one-year anniversary of his death, I…I can't be trusted around over the counter painkillers."
"Oh Dazai," Yosano's voice was soft, "I'm sorry, I wouldn't have brought it up if I'd realised," she paused, "wait, is that why you refused to be put on the omega pill?"
"Yep, medication in any format is…difficult for me." he gestured to his arms, "unsurprisingly, I have an addictive personality."
"and despite all this you still think that having a child is the best idea?"
"I…" Dazai struggled to find the words,
"Also, who are you expecting to father this child?"
"Well, when you give me the okay to start mating, I thought I'd make a list of all the ability users in the organisation from best to worst, and just work through them until one of them knocks me up"
"Dazai that's the worst idea I've ever heard."
"Look, I don't expect them to raise the child with me, I just need their err contribution."
"Well, I'm not giving you the okay yet, so we're going to focus on what you need to do to get there."
"Wait, you're going to tell me I'm stupid and to let it go?"
"Nope, you're an omega, it's highly likely you'll want a child someday and it's much easier to set the ground work now whilst you're still young, than undoing years of abuse to your body when you're older. Chuuya as Dazai's main bodyguard and friend, I want you to stay in the room for this. As if anyone is going to keep Dazai in line it's you."
"Does that mean I get to yell at him if goes off plan?" Chuuya asked a little too gleefully.
"To an extent, Dazai needs a balance of encouragement and being told he's an idiot…"
"You two are picking on me" Dazai grumbled
"We're going to break this into steps, a small change at a time, over a year" Yosano grabbed a pen and paper, "we'll outline it as we talk, I'll type it up later."
They talked it through and half an hour later the steps were in place, Yosano read them aloud, checking Dazai was happy with them:
Months 1-3
Step 1: One meal a day, try for lunchtime must feature vegetables. Snack of fruit in early morning. Start learning how to cook.
Step 2: Drink alcohol in the evening only.
Step 3: Attend therapy once a week for the full hour. Therapist to be chosen by Yosano, if Dazai is making no progress, Yosano reserves the right to sit in on sessions.
Months 4-6
Step 4: Two meals a day, preferably breakfast and lunch. Snack of fruit in evening. Start new exercise regime.
Step 5: Drink up to two glasses of one type of alcohol a day.
Step 6: Continue to attend therapy.
Months 7-9
Step 7: Eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. Must feature vegetables and protein, snacks of fruit is encouraged.
Step 8: No drinking for three days out of seven a week.
Step 9: Continue to attend therapy. Ideally Dazai will be working on ways of processing/reacting to things that doesn't involve self-harming.
Months 10-12
Step 10: Continue to eat three meals a day. Ensure exercise regime is being adhered to, and helping Dazai to have a healthy body to carry his child.
Step 11: Only drink during work meetings or events, one glass maximum.
Step 12: Therapy must continue past this month, Dazai.
"What if I slip up Yosano?"
"Then we just go back to the last point you were comfortable at, and slowly work on building you back to a point you can continue through this list. You don't have to have completed this in twelve months, I just thought that would feel doable to you, and you would feel more inclined to continue to work on it past the twelve months."
"Okay, that's less scary" Dazai smiled
"The aim of this is to lower your drinking, as you cannot drink whilst you're pregnant, and to get your body to a healthy stage where you can carry your child with minimal problems. Especially as omegas tend to carry multiple children and right now you would struggle."
"That makes sense, but why the therapy?"
"Really Dazai?!" Chuuya asked exasperated, "I fished you out of six different rivers yesterday. I will personally see to your meetings being shifted, confiscate your phone, and drag your ungrateful ass to the therapy sessions. You're the Mafia Boss now, did you ever see Mori trying to kill himself? No. It weakens our image and makes people think you're temporary. You've done some good work in this past year and you have some interesting plans for the future of both organisations. Don't let it be for nothing."
"I'll be honest, Fukuzawa was going to bring therapy up in the next group meeting. Everyone's a little concerned for you Dazai, you've taken on a lot as boss and whilst you are getting the hang of delegating, we don't want you to suffer like your predecessors."
"Okay, as long as it gets me closer to my babies being real, I'll go to the stupid therapy."
In the end it took Dazai two years to get through Yosano's list. He started off well, eating healthy, trying to limit his drinking, only occasionally moaning when Chuuya dragged him to therapy. He even took his therapists suggestion of drawing or painting as a way of releasing his emotions, after that it wasn't unusual to find a half-drawn picture along with Dazai's notes in meetings. He was even in the process of turning the other flat on his floor into an art space, covering the bed and kitchen area so he didn't get it covered in paint.
Then, nine months after starting, a number of things collided and ruined his progress. First there was the five-year anniversary of Odasaku's death, which coincided with the worst day of The Guild conflict, many lives were lost and a few of the Agencies detective's and Mafia members were badly injured. A few hours after Atsushi and Akutagawa finished The Guild, Chuuya found Dazai in his bathroom, he was surrounded by empty bottles of alcohol and a bloody knife.
He took the next six months off, Kouyou and Hirotsu running the Port Mafia in his absence. Yosano had found a rehab centre specifically for ability users, she had hoped that Dazai would be able to work through his problems with the resources they had in Yokohama, but after that day she knew it was beyond the skills of the staff they had. Dazai took no visitors for the first four months, and then he only allowed Yosano and Ane-san to visit him. They knew the place operated a detox from day one policy, and expected Dazai to still be struggling with it, but they were surprised. He looked healthy and happy. He wasn't wearing his bandages and they couldn't see any fresh marks. He told them how the rigid schedule there had helped him, it had been hard and he was looking forward to coming home. His accepting visitors was the first step in him being discharged, the next was allowing him free reign of his schedule to get him used to life outside the rehab centre. They stayed for a few hours and visited once a fortnight until it was time for Dazai to return to Yokohama.
At the advice of his mentor from the rehab centre Dazai went back to work slowly, a couple of hours, a few days a week, building his hours up when he felt comfortable. The bandages returned, there was a limit to how many changes he could feel comfortable with.
He filled his time painting in the flat opposite his, as well as setting up a garden.
Attached to the Port Mafia headquarters was a parking and vehicle repair garage, most of it was underground, but the entrance was on street level. Above that was a green house style roof and some patches of dirt, the room was mainly used on rainy days for cigarette breaks or change of scenery. With help he turned the space into a beautiful garden, there was a vegetable garden, fruit trees and flowers, he turned a different, disused area of the headquarters into a smoking space. He employed gardeners to keep on top of the space, but any staff member was allowed to spend time there as their missions and schedules allowed, and as long as they had put an hours' worth of work into the garden they were allowed to take some fruit or vegetables home for free.
A year after the incident Dazai returned to work full time, Kouyou and Hirotsu having kept the Port Mafia running to his high standard during his time away. When he started meeting with business partners and clients again, he made no attempt to hide why he had disappeared for a year. Kouyou considered gagging him the first time he told the truth, but much to their surprise most of their business partners and clients admired Dazai's honesty.
Soon Dazai turned twenty-four, and he was in Yosano's office for his yearly health check-up. Yosano was smiling as Dazai sat opposite her,
"Everything seems to be going well for you Dazai, your weight is healthy, I see you're still sticking to your exercise and therapy plan. How are you heats?"
"More frequent, they used to be once everything three months, but about six months ago they changed to every six weeks, I uhh got caught short a few times, I was lucky the meetings were only with our staff" Dazai blushed, "they seemed to have settled into their new routine, thankfully."
"Good," Yosano paused, "well, whilst I personally think you should leave it until you've met someone you love. You have put the work in and are in much more stable position than last time we spoke of this."
"Just get to the point Yosano."
"If you can find an Alpha to mate with, you can have your baby."
"Really?!" Dazai was shocked, he'd worked hard for this moment, but he thought it was still a few years off.
"Yes, everything I needed you to have done before you thought about having a baby you have, and your body is starting to want it to."
"What do you mean?"
"Your heats, they start getting closer together when your body is ready for a child."
"Hmm I never knew that."
"Which brings us to my next question, who are you going to have to father this child?"
"I'm thinking of writing a list of pros and cons. If I mate with an ability user, how does inheritance of the abilities work?"
"It depends on each omega, I ran some tests when I took your blood last, it came back with a 99% chance of your child having No Longer Human, and a 93% chance of the child having your partners ability. Because No Longer Human is permanently on, there is also a 97% chance that your child will have both parents abilities, it may not be a carbon copy of your partners ability, as being paired with your ability will probably lead to some interesting variations."
"That's good to know," Dazai stood up to leave, "Thank you Yosano."
"Once you've successfully mated with someone, I want to see you four weeks later for a pregnancy test, it's the earliest you can find out and as your heats are 6 weekly, saves you realising it hasn't worked when your emotions are screwed because of your heat."
"Great, see you soon."
