Episode 3 Part 4

There was a stony silence as the survivors regrouped after moving the bodies of the bandits out of the clearing and into a pile. They had been checked and any not killed by head shorts quickly had a knife used on their heads to ensure they didn't come back as Walkers.

"What do we do with them now?" Christo asked.

Niko shook his head. "For now we check everything we have and make sure we're ready to move on...I'm sorry Christo, I don't think it's safe for you and Iskra to just stay here."

"No I, I understand." Christo replied. "You're right. All those shots, if there are any Walkers nearby, they'll have heard and even if not...there might be more of them."

Arica grimaced. "Or those people he mentioned, Pytor was it?"

"We just have to keep moving until we find shelter." Roman cut in. "Once we know how our supplies are doing and everything's ready we can get these corpses somewhere safe to burn them, then we can get going."

Niko nodded. "Right."

At that moment they heard the footsteps and turned as the children and those who had been assigned to guard them arrived back at the clearing to join them again.

The moment she saw her father Iskra ran straight to him.

"Daddy!"

He smiled and immediately hugged her as she threw her arms around his middle, clinging to him.

"I heard the shots, I was so scared, I thought you-" She blurted out.

Christo smiled softly, smoothing back her hair. "It's okay butterfly, I'm alright."

The other smiled at the touching reunion, meanwhile, Mara, holding Misha's hand tightly, hurried over to Roman, the both of them worried for him.

"Roman are you-?" Mara whispered, eyes wide.

He nodded. "I'm fine. Everything went according to plan, we should be ready soon."

Mara nodded.

Misha then spoke up. "Then you, you stopped those bad men from hurting anyone else."

"I did, we all did." Roman replied.

Mara gave a tremulous smile, looking around to see how the others were faring. Everybody was alright it seemed, talking carefully, planning, all considering what their next move should be. Recalling an earlier talk she had with Katia, Mara couldn't help but smile upon seeing Katia, Kalina and Grozdan in tow, talking to Marko, making sure he was alright. It seemed they had got through the whole incident relatively well, with only two flesh wounds, one each for Bruno and Marin, between them all. Certainly a far better result compared to the bandits.

"Well, I um, I think we best join the others, we'll need to check over everything and consider what's next." Mara remarked.

Roman joined her as he spoke. "We were talking about that before you arrived, I think Niko has some ideas."

Mara was quietly curious, hopeful. It was impossible to stay completely safe in the world as it was now, but Niko certainly did his best for all of them and had never led them astray before.

So it was that she, Roman and Misha joined the other members of the group, even the newcomers like Bruno, Henrik, Ivano, Iskra and Christo had quickly learned from the others about Niko being, more or less, their leader. As well as learning of Niko favouring democracy rather than actually making decisions for everyone, choosing to give everyone their own say.

"Okay, as well all know, it's not exactly safe here anymore." Niko explained. "As the rest of us were saying before the others arrived, we're looking at the possibility of maybe more bandits showing up, or Walkers...or worse."

That caught the attention of those who had been away.

"Worse?" Cveta asked warily.

Niko nodded. "Apparently there's a group, a large group that's become...something like an army or something. Very dangerous apparently. They're working for a man named Pytor."

Everybody shared anxious looks at this and Niko sighed.

"But right now, I'd say time is our biggest enemy. The days are turning colder, winter is getting closer...We need to start to prioritise anything that can be used to make heat...also get our hands on warmer clothing...make sure we keep our supplies topped up." Niko explained. "We'll also need to find shelter."

The others all nodded,, a few murmuring in agreement and soon they had prepared themselves. Moving and burning the corpse pile before heading out into the wilderness, seeking shelter and a means to prepare themselves for the coming winter.
