Episode 4 Part 3

Having given Britta what she needed and watching her leave, the group considered for a moment.

"So, do you think we really should have done that?" Roman asked worriedly.

Pavle turned to him, narrowing his eyes. "Why shouldn't we?"

Bruno cut in. "Think about it, how do we know she was telling the truth, how can we trust her, and we gave her food and let her find out where we are?"

"So what, we refuse and potentially kill someone in need? What if they have children with them like us?" Mara protested.

Roman shook his head. "She never mentioned children, besides we-"

"Neither did we." Pavle countered. "You guys don't seem to trust her, think of her point of view, what reason does she have to trust us. She wouldn't have approached us unless she was desperate."

Before any of the others could respond, Niko spoke up.

"Enough. What's done is done, no point arguing about it." He said. "Let's all just calm down, we're on edge because of that group we were warned about. Now c'mon, let's get back inside huh, not gonna do us any good freezing our backsides off out here."

The others conceded his point, Roman and Bruno somewhat grudgingly and so they headed back inside the large house, reassuring those who had stayed inside and once more things were calm.

After making sure everything was secure in their house, the group gathered for another meeting.

"So, what now?" Bruno asked calmly.

"We need to figure out what our next move will be." Niko explained. "This place isn't gonna be permanent."

Roman nodded in agreement. "Yeah, let's face it, any human could climb the walls and as for the Walkers, they could push through that gate without any fuss."

The others shared a worried look and Bruno grunted.

"Then how come we've been doing so well here so far, hmm?" Bruno retorted.

It was Marko who explained. "That's because it's winter, the Walkers are slower or frozen solid right now. So humans would be our biggest threat. We're talking about our plans after winter."

"Exactly." Niko explained. "When the winter passes and the snow and ice all thaws, the Walkers will be back to coming to attack us and we'll be sitting ducks here. So we need to work out where to go and what to do, so we're ready before that time comes."

It was then Cveta stepped up, holding a few rolled up documents.

"These could help, found them in the back room. Maps, some of the local area, some of the whole country." She offered.

The others quickly gathered around as they unrolled the maps and began to take closer looks at them, seeing if there was anything they could find or use that would help them form plans for their future.

Meanwhile, with the adults looking over the maps and making plans, the kids sat together, anxious.

"What are we gonna do?" Sergei queried. "I mean, it's dangerous for all of us out here, isn't it?"

Iskra nodded. "Yeah, but we have the adults, my dad...your um..."

Ivano cut in. "My Grandpa yeah, but I'm not scared, I mean, Misha, you killed a walker right, so we can do it too, right?"

"I don't...I don't know." Misha admitted. "I was just, so scared. I just, reacted..."

Kalina nodded. "Yeah, it is scary. I don't...I don't what we can do. My brother is..."

She sniffled, looking over at Grozdan who sat by the adults, not saying much.

Lydia then spoke up. "Still, we need to learn how to defend ourselves, what if something happens to us and none of the adults are there. We're gonna need to learn how to shoot, or fight."

The other kids shared a worried look at that, clearly starting to see what she was getting at and beginning to agree with her.

Misha then suggested. "Hmm, maybe...maybe we could ask Roman to teach us. He's so strong, he could teach us anything."

The other kids considered that, having seen Roman in action themselves, his skills at close combat with bladed weapons, his skills with his gun and his skills with his bow. All of them made it clear Roman was a formidable fighter. They all agreed, if they wanted to learn how to defend themselves, Roman was surely the best person to ask.

Later that night, the others were all settling in to sleep, grabbing their blankets and such. Grozdan however sat, struggling to get to sleep as he was being troubled once again by his missing hand. He could feel it again, the twitching and tingling.

'Phantom pains, that's what they said...but damn it, it still really feels like...' He thought desperately.

He looked down at the stump of his missing left hand again, as if trying to remind himself it really was missing.

"Grozdan." A gentle voice got his attention.

He looked up, biting his lip when he saw it was Katia. He knew all too well how his little sister had come to see Katia as a new mother figure. He couldn't deny he was grateful for all she had done for him and his sister. But he still felt awkward and couldn't quite see her the same way his sister did.

"K-Katia...sorry, just, my hand again, I..."

Katia shook her head, sitting down next to him. "Don't be sorry. If your hand is bothering you, you know you can tell me."

He nodded and even managed a small smile as she pulled him into a tight hug. He rested against her, savouring the comfort she offered until finally he was able to sleep, with Katia going to sleep shortly afterwards. They had made plans, they just had to survive the winter and then they could take their next step.
