Episode 5 Part 1

The van drove onwards, bouncing over a bump which jolted the captives in the back who all grimaced.

'Urgh, shit, shit...' Niko thought, looking around.

Aside from his fellow survivors, all stuck with their hands bound behind their backs, a number of their attackers were in the back as well, weapons ready and aimed at them, waiting no doubt for the smallest misstep.

The situation actually looked hopeless. 'Too many of them to fight, no way of actually fighting, they're ready for us, shit, can't see a way out of this...'

He looked around cautiously, the only other two that could help him figure out some sort of escape plan were Roman and Arica. But they had the same looks on their faces that he was sure he did, they'd reached the same conclusion, they were trapped. The kids were obviously terrified, huddling close to their respective guardians. Even though he wasn't trying to show, even Ivano was scared, huddled close to Henrik. Kalina was trembling as she sat sandwiched between Katia and Grozdan, Iskra sniffling as she kept her face buried in her father's jacket. Like Ivano, Sergei tried to put up a brave front, but it was impossible to miss the fear in his eyes. Arica meanwhile kept whispering quietly to reassure Lydia while Misha looked up at Mara, biting his lip.

"I'm scared." He whispered.

Mara bit her lip but gently tried to calm him. "It'll be alright baby, we just need to stick together okay, we'll be fine so long as we're together."

He whimpered but nodded.

On the other side of the van Pavle looked desperately at Britta who was nearest to him.

"What is wrong with you, you...you lied to us."

She shook her head, looking uneasy. "I just do what I'm ordered to do, that's the way it works."

Pavle shook his head. "C'mon, you don't have to do this...Why, how many people have you done this too, what has happened to them, think about that."

She grimaced, looking even more uneasy. "That's enough."

"We have kids with us." Pavle pressed.

"Enough." She hissed.

"Having trouble with him Britta?" One of the men barked. "You smack him down or shoot, you don't waste time flapping your gums."

Britta shot back. "I don't recall asking your opinion now, do I."

The man glared at her but ignored it. The conversation went nowhere after that, but Niko and, he noticed, the others, had picked up on it. Britta wasn't doing this because she wanted to, she was like them, just doing what she had to survive. It didn't bode well for them, wherever they were going, but it helped them to know that there was at least one person they could trust there. Even the normally sceptical Bruno took note of this and allowed himself to hope that Britta may yet be able to help them.

Finally the van stopped and the attackers began getting off, opening the back, those up front getting out of the seats. Britta stood and cleared her throat.

"Alright, all of you, up." She said firmly. "Get out and follow the others, now."

They did so, slowly, carefully, not wanting to give their captors any reason to hurt or kill them. Exiting they found themselves in what appeared to be a parking lot next to a large warehouse that was attached to a hardware store, all fenced in with typical wire fencing reinforced with sheets of metal and improvised metal fences that looked extremely sturdy.

'No way, this place is huge, this isn't some group, it's...' Niko realized in shock.

He wasn't the only one, the others were even more amazed by it. This Pytor had formed an actual community, which had some small semblance of the old normality, in the middle of an apocalypse. Although it was clearly far from perfect, especially going by all the men wandering around with guns, some of them looking rather like Britta, wary but with some fear. Others hard and unyielding, it was clear that you had to stay on your toes, or keep your head down to survive here, or let it consume you and become cold and unfeeling. They continued to walk, Niko tried to stay calm, but could feel the eyes on them, noting that the people here were already sizing them up. He was jolted out of his thoughts by them suddenly stopping.

"So, what do we have here?" A cold female voice caught their attention.

All eyes turned to the speaker who stood before them with a triumphant smirk.

The woman who spoke was around thirty-five and of medium height with long brown hair and brown eyes, fair skin and slightly overweight, clad in what seemed to be some sort of military style clothing, she was eyeing the group with a worryingly sadistic gleam in her eyes.

"Survivors, Bozena." Britta explained with a slight tremor in her voice.

It was clear from the authority that Bozena exuded that she had to be the second in command here.

"Well, let's take a look them, what we've got here." She remarked. "Silly little rabbits getting caught in our trap."

Niko sent a warning look to Roman and Arica, the ones most likely to rise to her taunt as she began to walk along the line they had been put into, as if inspecting them. She then stopped at Grozdan and smirked darkly.

"Well, what have we here?" She remarked. "Take this one to my room, I've got myself a new pet."

"What, no!" Grozdan cried, struggling. "Get off me!"

"Grozdan!" Kalina cried.

Katia tried to struggle too but was held back. "No, leave him alone!"

But Bozena just laughed. "Alright, apart from the little girls and the fat one, get the ladies to Pytor's office, he'll be excited now he's got more than one to choose from. Take the rest to the pen."

Just like that the men began fulfilling their duties, forcing the group apart despite their struggles and desperate cries, especially Misha and Kalina as Katia and Mara were amongst those being taken to Pytor. But it was no use, they had been overpowered and there was nothing else they could do.
