Episode 6 Part 1

"Attention!"

Everybody in the pen jerked awake at the sound of Pytor's voice. It took them a few moments to realize it was coming from an internal PA system.

"Attention!" He repeated. "Ready the prisoners and prepare to start work for the day. Be warned that there will no venturing outside the compound for the foreseeable future as a herd of Walkers has been spotted and we must wait for it to pass. Now, get to work."

With that the PA shut off, leaving the whole group to look at each other worriedly.

"As if things couldn't get any worse." Arica muttered. "Stuck in here with crazed and dangerous freaks, while out there, there's a fucking herd."

The others were also clearly worked up, but they had to focus at once for at that moment they heard the door to the pen opening. Before long any thoughts of making a quick escape were gone. For Britta stepped in with three other men, all armed with assault rifles aimed directly at the group.

"Alright, ready to go to work." One of the men growled. "You gotta earn your place here."

Mara gasped at that. "Wait, what, all of us?"

The man scoffed. "Well yeah, of course, what are you, stupid. Think we'd just feed some mouths without them being worth it."

It was clear that he meant the children would therefore be made to work too.

Just the thought of that made the adults tense. Most of the kids shared worried, scared glances. Kalina remained fearful and despondent however and didn't move, still lost without Grozdan and Katia.

"Hey!" One of the men snapped at her. "Move it you, all of you!"

Kalina sniffled and the man glared. But then Britta stepped in.

"C'mon." She said gently. "Let's go, we get this done everything works out alright."

As she spoke she made eye contact with Emilia who nodded, giving her the signal she needed. Iskra and Lydia hurried up to Kalina and did their best to cheer her up.

"C'mon Kalina, we'll be doing it together." Iskra said.

Lydia nodded. "Yeah, you have us, we'll help."

The man watching them rolled his eyes. "Whatever just get a move on."

Zlata then spoke up. "Please, she's been separated from her brother and...she's clearly distraught. She can't work."

"None of them should." Mara interjected. "They're children-"

"They will work or will face the consequences. You earn your place here, no matter who you are, now enough of this stupidity, get out there now and get to work!" The man bellowed.

It was clear nothing would deter them so they reluctantly and fearfully made their way out of the pen, into the main building ready to be assigned their work tasks.

As they were taken into the main building, which resembled, at its most basic, a large warehouse, the group noted a number of other people, all either working, on on guard. Yet none of them were prisoners like they clearly were.

"Alright kids, this way." Britta said as firmly as she could. "The overseer there will tell you what you will be doing."

With a frantic look at their families, the kids followed Britta, Lydia having to put on a brave face as she guided Kalina to keep walking. All heading towards a large muscular and angry looking man. Mara instantly began to worry for Misha, just the look of the man gave her chills.

"Pay attention!" The man next to her snapped.

It was then she saw all the men had been taken to another part of the warehouse to work on their own tasks.

"Now then." The man spoke up. "You ladies will be working here. You have a very responsible task to take of, so if you know what's good for you, don't fuck it up."

Mara looked at the table in front of her, noting countless loose rounds of ammunition, and several gun clips.

The man then explained. "You'll be loading those clips with ammo, you get the right bullets, the right way round and the clips are full, or else, got it."

Mara swallowed nervously but nodded along with the others and with one last sharp word from the man watching them, they began. It was clear now they had no choice but to work, work and hope that an opportunity presented itself.

End of chapter, things continue to be tricky, read and review please.
