Episode 6 Part 4
Finally, at the end of the day, except for the still missing Sergei, Zlata and Emilia, the group were escorted back to the pen, the doors opened and they were forced inside. The guards finally leaving them along when the doors shut. As soon as the door was shut and they were left alone, Misha ran to Mara. She immediately wrapped him in a tight hug, kissing the top of his head.
"Misha! Thank god. Are you ok? Did they hurt you?" Mara gasped.
Misha sniffled, tears already in his eyes. "No, they...but...Sergei."
Mara said nothing. She was thankful Misha was saved from his fate but was worried for Sergei, as he was just a boy. For him to be so savagely beaten. She was also touched by the fact that, despite his scare, Misha was more worried for Sergei. The boy just had such a big heart. She held Misha tighter. She didn't want to be separated from him again.
Cveta sighed sadly. "This is hard on all of us, but some are forced to suffer worse than others..."
Mara saw her glance at Kalina as she said that, the girl simply lying on her bed curled into a fetal position, then a further complication.
Lydia spoke up, tugging on Arica's sleeve. "Where's Zlata and, and the other lady, Emilia?"
Arica bit her lip, looking at all the others, lost.
They were lost too, how could they tell a ten year old girl that the two women were being sexually abused. Mara stepped up, although she still struggled, trying to think of a suitable answer. The children were still too young to know these things.
Finally, all she could say was. "They should be here soon, hopefully."
The others also shifted uncomfortably before trying to settle in. As such, it was later on Mara found herself, still comforting Misha, seated next to Christo, who is doing the same for his daughter Iskra. They were sitting on the edge of both kids respective beds, trying to soothe them. Mara quietly sang a lullaby while stroking his hair, trying to lull him to sleep.
Watching this Christo smiled softly. "You're very good with him. Can I ask you something?"
"Of course." Mara said, not taking her eyes off Misha, who was slowly drifting off while she looked at him with love.
Christo sighed, smoothing back his daughter's hair. "Do you ever have doubts...I try, I try to do my best for Iskra, but frequently I wonder, if I'm doing enough, or if what I'm doing is right for her."
Mara was surprised at his question, as Christo was the true parent here, not her. She gave him a sad smile.
Looking at Misha for a moment, Mara turned back to Christo.
"All the time." She admitted. "I feel like I've failed him so many times. He was kidnapped, he's been hurt, he's been lost...just today, he dropped something, and the men went to beat him. One of them held me down, I couldn't reach him. He would have been punished had Sergei not taken the blow. All the time I wonder if I'm not doing enough...but every time, he still comes to me. He calls out for me, he cries for me, he never wants to let go. Because he knows I will always be there to protect him, to keep him safe. It's the same for your daughter. She knows that her dad will always be there for her."
Christo managed a smile at that, just then however, the door opened, and a still weak Sergei was thrown in, his injuries had been treated, but crudely so. Mara gently uncurled the fast asleep Misha from her and placed him back down the bed. She then rushed over to Sergei.
"Sergei! Are you ok?" She whispered in great concern.
Sergei nodded, trying to stand. "I'll...I'll be fine. Misha's okay right?"
Mara smiled at that, she was touched by Sergei's concern.
"Yeah-yeah, he's sleeping, he's ok." She explained gently. "He feels horrible about what happened..."
Sergei grimaced. "So long as he's alright it's fine."
Mara stroked his face gently, minding his injuries, as a show of thanks.
"Come on, let's get you settled into bed." She told him softly.
She did so and, once he was in bed, they waited, fearful until the doors of the pen open once more. Mara looked up, afraid it was the soldiers. It turned out it was, escorting Zlata and Emilia. Except for their clothes being rumpled and their haunted expressions however, there were no outward signs of what was done to them. Mara looked at the two women with pity. All she could think about was how this couldn't go on forever and that they needed to get out of this hellish place.
She wasn't alone in thinking that, seeing the others flocking worriedly to Zlata and Emilia who kept trying to wave them off, Emilia not wanting the pity, Zlata only worried about Sergei, having grown attached to the boy in the same way as Mara had become attached to Misha. Seeing all this, Niko knew enough was enough, they had to escape.
End of chapter, things are beginning to change, read and review please.
