Episode 7 Part 1
The unexpected noise of the door to the pen opening woke everybody up. They were all out of their beds, anxious. However at that point they noticed that it was only one person, Britta. As soon as she entered she used a remote to close the door behind her. She then turned to the group, looking them over anxiously.
"Is everybody here, I mean, except for..." She asked.
Niko nodded. "Yeah, we're all here."
Britta took a deep breath. "I know I've not exactly endeared myself to you, but I need you to trust me."
"Oh really, funny how you could even expect that we'd trust you after what you pulled." Roman snarled.
To which, of all people, Emilia snapped. "Then you can just stay here and rot while the rest of us go with Britta and escape."
"Excuse me?"
"I'm here to get you guys out." Britta explained. "But, I need to come with you, please."
Roman grunted but said nothing as the others, desperate enough to escape that they readily agreed.
"So, what's your plan exactly?" Niko asked.
Britta sighed. "It's not gonna be easy, especially with the herd out there."
Arica nodded. "I was waiting for someone to get there; I mean, we're stuck inside a base of armed lunatics, while outside a herd swarms and presents even more danger."
The others shared a worried look, they had to figure this all out.
Luckily Britta wasn't done yet and explained.
"We have to take risks and it's gonna be a long plan, but we'll figure it out." She told them. "Yes, that herd is dangerous, but it'll make a good distraction to deal with the guards and such in here."
Zlata queried. "What about those who aren't guards, they-"
"They're monsters, all of them." Britta remarked. "Bozena and I are the only women here until you were all captured and Emilia was brought in and they all saw me merely as-"
She shuddered but kept herself composed. This horrified the others and any worries they had about innocents being caught up in their escape were put to rest.
Arica then revealed. "No matter how big and tightly packed the herd is, there will always be stragglers. If we kill and grab...three of them, we can use them to get through the herd untouched."
"How so?" Pavle asked worriedly.
"We cut them up and cover ourselves in their guts." Arica revealed.
"What, urgh, you gotta be kidding." Emilia groaned.
Bruno shook his head. "You honestly think we'd do that?"
"If you wanna survive yeah." Arica snapped. "We get covered like that and they can't smell us. Then, so long as we don't do anything to draw attention to ourselves they'll think we're one of them and we can walk right through the herd.
The others nodded in agreement, this seemed to work out well.
But Marko noted a few problems. "What about Katia and Grozdan, we need to save them, also, how do we get out of here in the first place, what with the guards and all."
The others shared a worried look at that, knowing he was right.
Britta nodded, clearly she had considered that already.
"As I said, I have a plan, I've been snooping around, trying to find a way to help you guys." She explained. "Katia and Grozdan are kept locked up in Pytor's office, which is where we need to rescue them and can make our distraction there too. That's where he controls the PA system, which operates internally, or externally."
That caught the others attention.
"Wait, are you saying?" Niko asked.
"Yeah, someone gets into the office, rescues Katia and Grozdan, then they use the external speakers it's all clearly labelled. Pytor has a collection of music up there, they simply play one of his music albums loudly on the external speakers which will draw the herd in, distracting the guards."
"Then we can make our escape." Marin realized.
The others began to feel even more hopeful now. Roman however was still pensive.
He pointed out the problematic fact. "How do we get into the office to do this though, it's not like we can just sneak out of here and make our way up there."
Britta nodded. "I know, there is a way however, but like I said, it won't be easy."
The others watched as Britta approached the rope and pulley system that Niko had seen the first night.
"We can use this, the rope won't move because the pulley is jammed. But that means it can be climbed up to the roof. The skylight of Pytor's office is always open, they can use that to get into the office." She told them.
The others pondered this, there was still a major issue after all.
It was Niko who brought it up.
"The rope won't take the weight of any of us..." He trailed off, realizing. "No, no way."
Britta sighed. "I'm sorry, it's the only way, one of the kids has to go. The rope will take their weight and one of us could lift them up so they can grab the rope...the question is, who will go."
This made everybody tense, horrified at the prospect, but they realized Britta was right. It was the only way for them to escape. The problem was, their choices were limited, of the six children, Kalina was too distraught to do anything, Sergei was still recovering from his injuries and Ivano's bravado might make him reckless. That left Lydia, Iskra and Misha as possible choices, making them all the more worried.
Then a small brave voice spoke up. "I'll go."
All eyes turned in shock to Misha.
"Misha, you-" Mara gasped.
He stood firm. "I can do this, I...I want to help and I can."
Mara shuddered, she hated the thought of Misha in danger, but she could see his determination and knew he wouldn't be stopped. She also admitted she was somewhat proud of his courage.
"Alright then." Britta said. "We're relying on you Misha; don't worry, everything for operating the PA system is clearly labelled. As soon as you get the music on, we'll get out of the pen and begin to make our escape. You all saw the side door as you were brought in right, that's where we'll meet."
The others nodded in agreement and soon their plan was set.
So, readying himself, Misha swallowed and, hoisted up on Roman's shoulders, Misha reached up and grabbed onto the rope.
"Misha." Mara said, looking up worriedly. "You be careful baby."
Misha nodded and began to climb up the rope, biting his lip as he reached the top and pulled himself up onto the roof. Looking around he saw nobody around, he then saw the open skylight and knew that was the place. His heart pounding heavily he began to creep over the roof, making sure to keep his ears and eyes open for any danger. There was nothing by the time he reached the skylight. Looking in carefully, taking note of the muffled noises inside. He grimaced but prepared himself and carefully lowered himself into the room.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
