Adrien jumped back, tripped and fell. Marinette came out of her room. She gave a scream, when Plagg shot out of the room in his pj's. He flew over Adrien, ran down the stairs and jumped through the pane of the front door, leaving a rain of glass behind.
"Plagg!" Marinette shouted. She ran after him, down the stairs. But her little brother had already disappeared. Marinette quickly went back to Adrien.
"Are you hurt?" Adrien shook his head.
"I'm okay. What was that, for heaven's sake?"
"That was Plagg."
"Oh, I didn't see that." Adrien muttered. "Everything went so fast. It looked like a wild beast. Nice little brother you have."
"I really didn't know," Marinette said. "He was acting strange these last few days. But he looked normal tonight, before going to bed. I think they might have given him more licorice." She turned on the lights of Plagg's room. The bed was empty, but the ground was covered in licorice wrappers. Marinette looked desperately at Adrien. He put an arm around her shoulder. She was shaking all over. He carefully pulled her into a hug.
"Come, let's go find him."
"I remember." Adrien said, when they were on his bike. "The name sounded familiar to me. I've heard it before, but I couldn't remember where."
"What name?" Marinette asked. She was on the carrier, her arms around Adrien waist, her cheek against his back. When she found Adrien in front of the TV, she almost had a panic attack, afraid that she would have lost him, that she would be all alone. She closed her eyes and felt the heat of his body through his jacket. It felt very nice.
"Hawkmoth. It's a name from the Greek mythology(keep in mind that it's not, the real name is Lycaon). Miss Bustier told the story. It was about a king called Hawkmoth, who became a wolf by Zeus."
"Wait a sec, that's why the licorice is called HAWK-LICORICE," Marinette said. "Hence the wolven head on the wrapper."
"Exactly," Adrien said. "Marinette, you're a genius!" It was already dark, but they both had on their sunglasses and Adrien rode through the streets without any light. He wanted to stand out as little as possible. Soon, it looked like they didn't have to worry about that. They were the only one that rode through the quiet street. The city looked extinct. Marinette got goosebumps. Plagg was also nowhere to be found. They had looked everywhere.
"This is scary," Marinette whispered. "Where is everybody?"
"I'm not sure, but I think we have to search around the market square. There were a lot of cars parked there, a couple days ago. I already thought that was strange." In the distance, they could see the church tower over the houses. They still hadn't encountered a living creature. But the closer they went to the market square, the more cars they saw. As they passed, they watched the cars with caution.
"There's our car," Marinette suddenly whispered.
"And ours is behind yours. Let's check. What if Plagg hid in your car." They looked but the car was empty. "In any case, our parents are nearby," Adrien said. "Let's continue searching. They rode through the market square. This time, there were no stalls. The whole square was full of cars.
"Shit," Adrien said. "It looks like the whole city is here." The church bell suddenly rang. It was 11 o'clock. Both of them were startled. The rings sounded twice as hard in this silence. They looked at each other and laughed quietly.
"Don't chicken out now." Marinette grabbed Adrien's arm tightly.
"Who? Me? I'm as calm as the calm before a storm," Adrien said with a shaking voice. They stepped off the bike and he put it against a tree. "I forgot my lock, but something tells me there won't be any thiefs out tonight." They walked to the market square. The cars were parked crooked and they had to squeeze through the cars, sometimes. The moon was brightly in the sky and the shadows of the church fell menacingly over the square. Marinette grabbed Adrien's hand.
"Where to now?" Adrien hesitantly looked around. Marinette's hand felt warm and nice in his. He felt stronger. She belonged to him and together they would solve the problem.
"I know for sure it's somewhere here. Maybe they're all in the church."
"There's no light in the church. There's no-one there." Adrien sighed.
"If only there was someone who could show us the way." At that moment, the back door of a car opened. Two girls and one boy stepped out. It was Kim, Sabrina and Chloe. Kim grinned.
They came closer. They blocked Adrien and Marinette's way. In the moonlight, their eyes shone like yellow jewels.
