As expected, Roosevelt Field Mall was packed on the Saturday afternoon. Crowds of people moved from one end of the mall to the other carrying bags, food and whatever. It was probably one of the worst places to meet up and discuss something private like Digimon, but it's what Sienna had suggested when Vince spoke with her the prior night. It was somewhere central and just low key enough to seem normal to avoid any awkward explanations. Sienna leaned over the railing on the second floor by the food court. She held her phone in her well-manicured hand while her amber eyes scanned the crowds below.
"Anything yet?"
Sienna looked down at the short figure next to her. ToyAgumon was wearing an oversized black hoodie to hide its unique appearance. She shook her head.
"No, and they're late." Sienna huffed and pulled her hair back into a ponytail to keep it out of her face as she looked down again over the crowd.
"Is there a reason you're not calling them?"
"It takes the fun out of it. I figure from where we are standing I can see most of the mall, so I should be able to spot them all easily."
"But there are so many people, and you haven't seen them in years. Wait, are you playing that needle in a hay stack game?" He asked, looking up at her with block like face. Sienna smiled and shrugged.
"More like 'where's Waldo', but yeah same idea. I need something to do while we wait." She opened her phone again, frowning as the minutes counted by. "And they say girls are always late," she groaned.
"Who's they?" ToyAgumon asked with a perplexed look.
Sienna looked down and smiled softly. "Forget it, it's a figure of speech."
"Wait, how do you figure a speech?"
Sienna let out a small laugh and shook her head before patting the Digimon on the head. "Never mind." She looked back over the crowd. Her eyes lit up as she focused on a group of four just passing the Gamestop. Between the two guys was a figure dressed similarly to ToyAgumon and one of the guys had a backpack on that looked particularly heavy. "Come on," she smirked and headed towards the escalator. They reached the ground floor just as Vince and Jason were getting to escalator. She grabbed Vince's arm, stopping him in his tracks and smiled widely. "Took you two long enough."
"Sienna!" Vince exclaimed, holding his arms out for a hug. She shook her head with a grin and hugged him, then did the same with Jason. She stepped back and looked down as Gabumon and ToyAgumon exchanged some elaborate handshake.
"Hey guys." She laughed and stepped back from them and looked down, straightening out her skirt. "Thanks for meeting me. I know it's been a while and that's my fault."
"It's fine," Vince said quickly, shaking his head to cut her off. "Really, you're here now that's all we can ask for, right Jason?" Vince shot a glance back at Jason.
"Yeah." He smiled back to Sienna and shifted slightly. Sienna smiled, a weight lifted from her shoulders, at least for now. "So, we should talk somewhere more private," Sienna added and motioned for them to follow after her. They walked out of the mall and into the parking garage.
"Wait, if you have a car why didn't you just come to Jason's?" Vince asked standing in front of the red and black late 90's Toyota Rav4.
"Oh well, I wanted to pick up something from the mall," she replied, opening the tailgate to show off a few bags filled with various electronic components. "hop in."
Ten minutes later they pulled into a secluded parking spot at Eisenhower Park. They all emerged from the vehicle and headed off towards a collection of trees in the middle of the various baseball fields and public grills. Once there, ToyAgumon and Gabumon lowered their hoods and Gomamon squirmed his way out of Jason's backpack.
"Hey, why didn't you let us know ToyAgumon came back?" Vince spoke up first and put his hand on Gabumon's head.
Sienna shifted her stance. They knew. It wasn't that surprising, Gabumon or Gomamon probably said something. "I don't know. I guess I didn't think too much of it until yesterday." Her voice softened. "This Digimon, Aegiomon, appeared and…" she paused, looking past Jason at the goat-man like being standing there with a red scarf around his neck and silver armor plating over his goat legs.
"I can take it from here Lady Slayer of the Black Chaos." he said, holding his hand up to silence her.
"You!" Vince interrupted, pushing Jason's arm to get his attention. "I saw you yesterday when I was on the bus."
"Forgive me for that Slayer of the Black Chaos. I was unable to locate you easily and needed to flee before they found me. It's why I couldn't reveal myself to you, Slayer of the Flames," he motioned to Jason.
"Why are you calling us that?" Jason asked.
"Your triumphs are legendary. The tales of your journey through the world are told to those young and born after the crisis to ensure you are given the recognition you deserve. You," he pointed to Jason, "You and your partner Vikemon brought an end to the reign of fire led by SkullM eramon and stopped him from expanding his domain to your world. Your courage and dedication to your friends is admirable." Aegiomon bowed his head out of respect. "And you," he pointed at Sienna and then Vince. "You two along with VictoryGremon and MetalGrurumon brought an end to the reign of the Black Chaos."
"Hey, I helped too! I didn't just kill SkullMeramon!" Gomamon shouted. "I get no credit for the hard work I put in against Chaosdramon or BlackImperialdramon…" he grumbled.
Aegiomon bowed his head. "Forgive me. The stories are not perfect. I believe those Digimon living on the shores hold you to the highest regard. But I digress. I am here again seeking your aid. My father does not agree the threat is great, but I have seen the armies rising, I have seen what's happening in the old fortress and what the demon is doing."
"You're saying you found a way for us to get back to the Digital World?" Sienna asked, her eyes lighting up. "We can really go back?"
"Hold on, what about that Snimon last night?" Jason interrupted. "He really seemed like he was specifically after us."
Sienna threw a puzzled look at Jason. "Snimon? Is that why our call dropped?"
"Yeah, he wrecked Jason's street but we were there to exterminate the bug," Gomamon replied looking rather pleased with himself. "Isn't that right Gabumon?"
"We did. We were lucky gates opened before it was too late. Aegiomon, was that you?"
The goat-man Digimon nodded again. Sienna crossed her arms and looked at her friends. If she had been more open about ToyAgumon being around, maybe she could have been there, helped.
"Was anyone hurt?" Sienna asked.
"No, thankfully the house that did get hit was empty. But it was close." Vince answered. "Sorry, should have mentioned that but, well, you know." He shrugged. Sienna frowned. He was being petty for her not calling sooner and losing touch. Like ToyAgumon arriving and being attacked by a murderous mantis were even close to being the same thing.
"Ok." Sienna shook her head. There was no talking to him when he got like this. It was just better to let him stew. "So, Aegiomon, you were saying?"
"As you are all aware of now, the demon in the fortress has access to this world. That Snimon was sent to eliminate the threat you both pose. I'm not sure how, but Digimon who were normally peaceful have become aggressive and those who surrender to the small army have willingly joined in their ranks."
"I guess being famous isn't all it's cracked up to be…" Vince muttered. "Alright, I'm down." He looked over at Jason and Sienna. "I mean what, it's some demon Digimon in a fortress we already know…and we kinda saved the world once. Piece of cake!" he laughed. "Hell, we can probably get this done in time to get back to school on Monday."
Sienna nodded. "I had a feeling you'd say that Vince." She turned to Jason and raised her eyebrows at him while tilting his head towards her right shoulder.
Jason did not look as confident as the others, in fact he looked very uncomfortable. "I've got a big test on Monday and I still haven't heard back from any colleges."
"Oh you're smart Jason, come on! I came here to save you; don't you owe me?" Gomamon asked smirking. "Come to think of it, I've saved you a bunch of times!"
"We can't do it without you man. It'll be fine." Vince added. "We'll be back before you know it."
Jason sighed. Sienna could see he was not liking the pressure being put on him, but it was true they needed him. She walked over and put her hand on his shoulder then gave it a gentle squeeze. Jason nodded and then shrugged.
"Okay, let me just tell my parents so they don't worry." He replied, took out his Sidekick and walked a back towards the parking lot to talk to his mom in peace.
"I'll make the preparations then. I can get us close to the fortress so we won't have to travel far." Aegiomon rubbed his hands together and began muttering a spell of some sort. He opened his palms towards the parking lot
"Oh hang on let me just get something from my car." Sienna took off running, leaving Vince alone with the Digimon. She opened the tailgate of her SUV and rummaged through the bags for a moment. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted Jason pacing in the parking lot. Sienna closed the tailgate and walked over to him.
"You ok?'
"No, not really." Jason put his hands in his pockets and looked off to where Vince was with the Digimon. "You really cut him off for years?"
Sienna frowned. "I thought you were nervous about school and college. And from the looks of it, you didn't say anything about us." She crossed her arms and shifted her stance to the right.
"It never came up! Besides, I thought we were all friends."
Sienna took a deep breath and put her hand on his shoulder. "We were, I mean are. It's just, when Vince likes a girl he gets stupid. It was just easier to cut him out. Otherwise I'd have to deal with him trying to get with me and then I'd probably snap at him." She huffed. Her expression changed suddenly and a coy smile crossed her lips. "Plus, he's not as cute as you."
Jason chuckled in a high pitched way, shaking his head with a grin. "We'll have to tell him sometime. Maybe not about, this…but that we've kept in touch."
Sienna frowned and took a step back. "So, you're saying we have a weekend together in the Digital World, the place where we met and I fell for you and I have to pretend like we're not together? Is that really how you want to play this Jason?"
He hesitated, looking over towards the trees. "No, well no. Maybe we can just ease him into it?"
Sienna smirked and nodded, taking a step back towards him. "Fine, because he's your best friend." She leaned in to kiss him on the cheek.
"And your friend," Jason reminded her.
"Yeah…he seems more normal, you're right." Sienna ran her hand through her hair, pulling the strands back and quickly tying it into a ponytail. "Hey, you wait here for a moment and I'll go back first so we don't raise any red flags ok?"
"Okay, thanks Sienna."
She winked at Jason and turned back towards her SUV. Sienna grabbed one more item and then returned to the others with her laptop bag, a few extra computer parts and some electronic components. Sienna felt Vince's eyes on her and she turned to him with a sweet smile. "I want to try and upgrade."
Vince just nodded in response as Jason sauntered back to the group. He gave them all a worried smile as Aegiomon finished with the portal.
"Thank you great heroes. Please, this way."
Aegiomon stepped through first. Vince nodded at Jason, then Sienna and with Gabumon in tow followed the goat-man Digimon through.
"Here goes nothing," Jason said as Sienna took his hand. She gave him a reassuring squeeze and, along with their Digimon partners, they walked on through.
