Assignment 3: Calligraphy: The Dark Lady: Task #4 - Memory Charms: Write about a forgetful person
Flashback to chapter 1:
Then she saw another vision, this one was a bouquet of flowers being held out to her, but she couldn't see who was holding them. Okay, it couldn't be Malfoy, she couldn't picture him ever being the type to carry flowers, especially not daisies.
She dreamt of various images that night, and when she woke up, she only remembered bits and pieces. She remembered a picnic, but also a candlelit dinner, she remembered the smell of hair gel, and the scent of dirt and grass under someone's fingernails. These things just didn't fit, maybe the picnic element was her? But gardening, she was more curious about the creatures in the garden than the garden itself.
"I am a fairy, Draco," she said, and at the same time, her lilac wings appeared as if from nowhere, and the shock was clear on his face.
"I just want a mate," Luna sighed, stirring her coffee. She was sitting in the coffee shop with Ron and Harry. After her discovery that Neville was smitten with her, and Draco had felt the pull of her powers since before she came of age, it was strange to her.
"You just want to mate?!" Ron said, spitting out his coffee.
"I just want a mate!" Luna repeated, rolling her eyes.
"You're not matin' with me Sunshine!" Ron replied, and Luna couldn't help but laugh at this. She was convinced he had known what he was saying, and was simply trying to make her feel better. Ron had the strange habit of knowing how to do that.
"I know everything seems a bit complicated right now," Harry said. "But I am sure it will all work out like it's supposed to, look at me and Ron, nobody would ever have thought we would end up together."
"You're right, Harry," Luna said. "You always do know the right thing to say. Will you stay with me? During the date?"
"Don't be silly, Luna, you're capable of doing this on your own," Harry said, and she winced.
"I was worried you might say that."
So as soon as the door opened and her first suitor appeared, the two whispered her words of encouragement and left into the streets of Hogsmeade, insisting they needed to visit Honeydukes, Luna didn't think it was quite a lie, because Ron always had a great love of sweets.
As soon as Neville walked in, he stumbled, knocking into the counter by the door. "Oops." She overheard him saying as he walked towards the table she was sitting at. He was carrying another bouquet of daisies, like the first day, on her birthday, and she beamed at him.
He reached the table she was sitting at and greeted her with a one-armed hug. He seemed to have forgotten about the flowers, because he slid into the booth and was telling her about this plant that could make Wolfsbane potion more stable.
"Nev, didn't you forget something?" Luna asked him.
"Um, I don't think so."
"The flowers?" she prodded.
"Oh gosh, yes, I forgot, those are for you." Neville blushed, and handed them over to her.
"Thank you, they are lovely." Luna placed them beside her, and added. "So, what in the plant allows it to stabilize the Wolfsbane potion?"
"What Wolfsbane potion?" Neville asked, a puzzled expression on his face.
"Um, you were telling me about the Aurora flowers," Luna nudged.
"Oh, did you know that…" Neville started, and the flow of the conversation changed completely. She never minded much that Neville was so forgetful, but she wondered if Draco would be as even tempered as he appeared if he realised how easy it was for Neville to get distracted by his surroundings.
When Draco walked in, he held an aura of power that made something race inside Luna, he was wearing dark green robes that brought out the silver shine in his eyes, and he held two small packages in his hands. He walked over to the two of them, and it was clear he had eyes for nobody else. If the waitress was tempted to flirt with him, she was waved off. "I'm here to join my partners," he said dismissively. Luna was a bit tempted to laugh at how serious he was.
"Oh, Draco is here, hi Draco," Neville called, smiling eagerly at the Slytherin.
"Nice to see you, Neville, Luna," he kissed each of them on the cheek, and Neville blushed. It was clear the whole thing was still a bit confusing to all of them.
"I got you something," Draco said, and held out the boxes, sliding in next to Neville.
Luna reached for both boxes, curious to see the contents.
"Oh, not that one," Draco said, looking mischievous, "this one is for Neville." He slid the other box over to Neville.
"Um, thank you, Draco," Neville said nervously. "I didn't think to get you anything…"
"That's perfectly fine, Neville," Draco insisted. "Open them."
Luna was too curious to open her own, and instead focused her attention on her soulmates, Draco's silver eyes focused on Neville opening the small box.
"A remembrall?" Neville asked, curiously. At first, it was unclear to Luna if this was meant as a teasing type of gift, or if there was a sentiment there. "Why?"
"I don't want you to forget about me," Draco said. "I know how much that other one meant to you, and it's basically my way of saying I'm sorry."
"Draco, that's so thoughtful." Luna smiled.
"Now, open yours," Draco said, turning his attention to her.
She felt a blush rising in her cheeks; she had been so pleased the two of them were getting along. She opened her small box, and it held a lilac gem in a silver ring, an ode to the colour of her delicate fairy wings.
"Oh, Draco, it's stunning," Luna said.
"Check the engraving," Draco added. Luna had no idea how Draco had gotten hold of her mother's lullaby, and even less clue how he had managed to get the entire fairy song engraved on the inside of her ring. She felt tears welling up in her eyes, it was the most thoughtful thing any man had ever done for her.
"What's wrong, Luna?" Neville asked, peering at the ring.
"Nothing, it's beautiful," she said. "Thank you, Draco."
She slipped the ring onto her left hand, and she watched it adjust itself to fit her perfectly, She looked up at Draco, and he shrugged. "I had to make sure it would fit you."
"What's the engraving?" Neville asked curiously.
"It's a lullaby my mother sang to me as a child," Luna explained, fiddling with the ring, finding the unusual shimmer of light to keep catching her attention.
"Luna, that's so pretty," Lavender said, walking over to the table to admire the ring. Of course, Lavender wasn't aware of what it all meant. "Can I get you guys anything else to drink?"
They shook their heads, and Lavender didn't linger, after Hogwarts, she opened this little coffee shop in Hogsmeade, saying that Madam Puddifoot's just didn't cater to the vast majority of Hogwarts students, and from the looks of it, she was right. Luna never saw the place empty, and despite the clear ode to her alma mater in the decorations, even other former, and current, students frequented the little shop.
