Adrien could finally move again. He could hardly believe it. He was still alive. More importantly: Marinette was still alive. She slowly sat up, looked at him and stroked his face. There was no place for words. The wolves that kept them down, stopped and crawled on their stomachs to the edge of the stage. They pressed themselves to the ground, howling, scared, surprised. Two people, trapped into the bodies of a wolf. Marinette and Adrien dropped from the stage. Marinette lifted up Plagg in her arms. He immediately fell asleep in her arms. There were confused whispers in the room. People stood up and sat back down, uncertain, dazed, lost.
"They are confused, because their new leader disappeared," Adrien said. "Maybe they even regret not turning into a wolf." You could hear some wailing and howling in the room.
"Yeah, I think so," Marinette said with a slight shiver in her voice. She stroked Plagg's head. "They probably need some time to calm down."
Adrien saw his parents. They didn't turn into wolves, that was a relief, but their eyes were still yellow. If everything will be alright with them, I will never wish them to Australia, he thought. He looked around the room. "Where is Suez?"
The center aisle was empty. Suez had disappeared. "Quickly, we have to catch up," Adrien said. "He can't just go away?"
"He can't?" Marinette asked. "I think he can do anything he wants. I mean, he is Zeus in a heavy-metal suit. He probably shot into the sky like a lightning bolt, or something like that. Back to heaven where all those spying, Greek gods are. Send him a postcard."
"I don't think they have a mailbox there," Adrien said with a slight chuckle. "I would like to see him again. Even if he is Zeus, he will stay Suez in my head and he saved us." With Plagg in her arms, Marinette walked away with Adrien. She saw her parents, who like everyone else, looked very confused. While Marinette looked at them, she felt pity, but also anger. They would have feed her to the wolves. They didn't try to stop them.
I'll also need time, Marinette though. Time to forgive them.
Adrien had already gone through the door and she quickly followed after him. He was waiting for her at the exit.
"I'll carry Plagg," Adrien took the little boy from Marinette. Plagg didn't even notice. He wrapped his arms around Adrien's neck, put his head against Adrien's chest and continued sleeping. They exited the building, crossed the grounds in front of the studio and walked past the dead row of houses, until they reached the dark path next to the church. Suez was nowhere to be seen, not even when they reached the market square. There was a soft giggling sound and suddenly Kim, Sabrina and Chloe appeared from behind a car.
"Watch out," Adrien whispered, but the three bullies didn't seem to notice them. They looked around, to the cars, the church and the stars and they giggled sometimes for unknown reasons.
"They are harmless," Marinette said. "I hope they get over those blows from Suez. Well, except for that blond girl." Adrien chuckled.
"Yeah, a few weeks of headaches will be amusing to watch. And please don't remind me of Chloe." Adrien shivered as his gaze turned to the street. A black van suddenly rode by. The driver's seat window was open and a shred of rock music blew across the square.
"Suez!" Adrien exclaimed. "Thanks!" The hand of Suez appeared from the window and he waved. The rings on his fingers left silver strings in the air. Then the van sprayed away, with an exhaust of lighting. Far behind the houses you could hear the growling of the motor, that turned into the sound of oncoming thunder.
Dark clouds started to form above the church and the sky became as black as licorice. People started to come from the church path moments later. They stumbled more than they walked. The city people had left the studio and appeared in a long line next to the church. A long line of dark figures with dull, yellow eyes. Thunder rumbled again.
"There's going to be a large storm," Adrien said. "I think it's a goodbye gift from Suez."
The people in the square looked at the sky unsure, like they were afraid of the black clouds. The next moment a crackling lightning bolt jumped across the square, that set everything in light and reflected into the eyes of the people. The darkness was chased away for every dark corner, for a couple seconds. Everyone looked like they were hit by the lightning bolt, Plagg was still sleeping soundly. Adrien didn't pay the pain in his arms any thoughts. Just like everyone else, he looked up. Marinette put her head on his shoulder. They stood there, unmoving. It then started to rain. The water hit the raised heads and washed their eyes clean. Yellow streams glided over the cheeks, dropped on the ground and seeped away between the stones on the street.
Marinette was searching for her parents and saw them after a while. Adrien found his father and mother as well. They wiggled themselves through the people and took their parents hands.
"Dad, mum, are you coming?" Adrien said. His parents rubbed their eyes and looked at him with surprise.
"Adrien?" His mother finally said. "What are you doing here? What are we doing here?" With even more surprise, she looked at Plagg that was still sleeping in the arms of her son.
Adrien laughed from relief. "You were away, far away. Almost as far as Australia. But now you are back, thanks to Suez."
"Suez? Who is that?" Marinette's papa asked. Thunder rumbled across the square and a new lightning bolt flashed through the air. Between the sound of the rain, Marinette and Adrien swore they heard rock music.
"Stairway to heaven," Adrien whispered. Both of them thought the same thing at that moment. Maybe Suez was up there, riding his old black van, with the music very loud, up over a staircase of stars to heaven. They looked at each other and smiled.
"Who is Suez?" Marinette's papa repeated.
Adrien suddenly noticed that his arms felt very heavy. "Could you carry Plagg now," Marinette said to her papa. "Adrien is almost falling over."
"Oh, of course, sorry Adrien." Marinette's papa pulled up his collar, grabbed Plagg and hid him under his coat, because the rain was falling fast and Plagg's pj's were soaking wet.
"That's better. Thanks, Adrien." Marinette grabbed Adrien's face and kissed him. Adrien kissed her back without any hesitation. The kiss was sweet, but full of passion. This was the best feeling ever. Marinette released the kiss, winked at Adrien's red face and half lidded eyes, and nudged her parents, who had been unaware of the kissing their children did. "Shall we go? On the way we will tell everything about Suez. It all started with TV 12 and HAWK-LICORICE…."
Adrien knew that this wouldn't be the last time that he and Marinette kissed and walked together with their hands intertwined.
Plagg's head rested safely under the jacket, on the chest of his father. Nobody saw how he sleepily opened his eyes. Nobody saw the yellow shine moving back and forth between his eyelids.
