"Hermione," Viktor began as he followed the girl out of the hospital wing. Out of the four pairs, they were the last to get checked up and leave, which hadn't helped the awkward silence between them. "I know you really like Fred, please don't feel bad or worry about my feelings- but I don't think you are that silly anyways."
Hermione looked up at the boy and managed a weak smile as she shuffled at the feet, "I'm just sorry if I gave you any wrong idea's, you know. I like being your friend a lot, and I'm really sorry for mistaking your actions for someone else's during the task. Thank you for saving me,"
"Don't worry. I know the way you look at Fredrick, and he looks at you the same," the two now began walking along the halls side by side. "If I am being true to you, I didn't think they would chose you for the second task… But it would have been easier to pick my date than for the head master to learn who my friends are."
The two chuckled lightly at this before returning to the conversation. "Can we remain friends?" Hermione asked politely.
"Of course we can," Viktor smiled back. "But if Fredrick breaks your heart, I will still be here too."
Hermione giggled lightly and agreed to that, very glad that the awkwardness had now passed and they were back to being only slightly less awkward friends.
As the two continued walking along, the conversation went back to its usual discussion about England and Bulgaria. For as quiet as he could be, Viktor was a very curious person and seemed to have a lot of different ideas about the country and Hermione did in return. They were headed to the hall quite slowly for lunch, appreciating the friendly conversation they were having and the end to the previous tension. As they turned a corner, a thought seemed to pop into Viktor's head as he looked up in surprise before turning back to look down at Hermione.
"I never asked… What do your parent's do?" Viktor asked sweetly. Hermione suddenly felt a rush of worry that was quite unlike her as she stopped to think about the fact that Viktor didn't yet know her parents were muggles. Suddenly, Hermione felt her cheeks warm up as if she just learn't what her biggest worry was. She stopped for a moment to think- pondering that she not only has never cared about what people think about her background, but also about the fact that she cared then and there. Was she really that concerned with what Viktor thought about her.
"Well they're actually-" Hermione was cut off.
"Muggles." a voice snickered from behind. Hermione's eyes went wide with confusion as they turned to face a pasty blonde boy who had just walked out of Snape's classroom.
"Shut your mouth, Malfoy," Hermione sneered, certainly not caring about what he though.
"Why? I'm only telling Krum the truth. Did you know that, Krum? That Hermione Granger is a mudblood?" Draco chuckled to himself, satisfied with the opportunity to torment someone he didn't like. He had been absent from their lives for most of the year, and this was mainly due to the fact that the Daily Prophet was around and he had to be on his best behaviour. Hermione figured he must of picked up on the lack of stories, and scolded herself for not thinking to make Rita Skeeter write a piece on Draco.
"What's it your business anyways? Have the first years figured out that you're less of a bully and more a pathetic sod?" Hermione snapped, a smile spreading on her lips at the remark. "Now piss off, please."
"Are you scared, Granger?" Draco teased. In the midst of their bickering, Viktor Krum only looked from Hermione to Draco in deep thought, and then started to walk away from the girl towards the blonde. To put lightly, Hermione was instantly insulted and hurt. "See, Krum. You'd be best to hang around people of your own-"
Draco dropped to the floor in a single second, Hermione's jaw soon followed as she looked from an unconscious Draco to the slight bleeding on Krum's fist before he looked from the boy back to Hermione and a goofy but worried smile spread on his face. "I think we should leave before a teacher comes," he remarked, quickly walking away past Hermione and grabbing her hand as they practically jogged to the hall.
"What in the world did you do that for?!" Hermione asked once they had distanced themselves from Draco and the hallway a fair bit.
"Would you not have done the same?" Viktor asked back worriedly.
"Well… Probably, but still!" Hermione was now laughing a bit, and tapped Viktor on the back encouragingly. "I feel bad for thinking you were going to join his side."
"Oh goodness no. You know, my mother is just like you," Viktor revealed with a soft smile. "Her father was a publisher for a news paper- very famous in our part of Europe- and her mother stayed at home."
"I see… Are you close with them?" Hermione asked, feeling like that was the right thing to say.
"Very. They live in our home and all. Even though my parents are both wizards, I grew up learning about the muggle world before I learn't I could do magic too," he admitted. Hermione had suddenly felt silly for her previous mindset, and the fact that she had cared so much, even for a split second, what others thought of her parents. "You didn't tell me what your parents do?"
"Oh," Hermione smiled. "They're dentists."
Viktor looked at her with a cocked head, not seeming to know what in the world she had just said. As she looked up at his confusion, Hermione couldn't help but blush slightly and awkwardly, hoping she didn't make him feel silly for not knowing a random muggle profession .
"What do… they do?" he asked with uncertainty. The awkward tension was beginning to grow once more, but Hermione decided to push through.
"They pretty much fix teeth, clean them and take the bad ones out, you know,"
"Oh! Like, um… In Bulgaria we call them zubolekar," he piped. Hermione looked at him with surprise and smiled at him, the tension leaving once more and returning to the conversation. "They are both.. den-tist? They must be very smart."
"They are, but aside from muggle-borns, everyone thinks their profession is crazy," Hermione admitted sheepishly. They finally entered the hall, but instead of parting ways Viktor began to follow her as she mindlessly walked up to Harry and Ron, completely unfazed by the change of atmosphere.
"I could imagine so, but every time we've told my grandparents about wizard jobs, they laugh and call it silly. My grandfather thinks he should run the Bulgarian ministry because he thinks they are very stupid."
Hermione couldn't help but laugh at this remark, agreeing fully at the difference. As they finally approached their two friends, who seemed to be just about finished with their meal, Hermione insisted that he sit with them for the remainder of lunch, very happy to finally talk to someone about these differences. She never talked to Harry much about the muggle world, and it was mainly because there was a lot he didn't know about since he grew up so strictly. Aside from that, she also knew that it sometimes hurt to remind him that he grew up with his aunt and uncle instead of his parents, so she tried not to bring it up at all.
"So whats Bulgaria like with all of that, you know… Muggles and Wizards?" Hermione asked as they dished themselves food, Hermione noticing that he ate at least 3 times more than she did.
"Quite bad. Not as nice as here, I think. Many jobs don't like people who have muggle families. My mother had a hard time growing up- she actually came here to Hogwarts for school," Viktor revealed. "She worked for this ministry, and then met my father and they got married and moved back."
"I see," Hermione replied, wondering how hard it must have been for his mother. Hermione often thought that the Ministry was bad, but the mindset in Bulgaria must have been very different. "Was it hard when she moved back?"
"Not quite. She took my fathers name so things were different," Viktor admitted, taking small mouthfuls at his food. "And my father was a loving man, so he never let anyone tell my mother she was bad. He was the one who told me, you don't look bad people in the eyes, you just hit."
Hermione smiled as she thought about Draco. While she wasn't fully for violence, there was never a moment that Draco didn't deserve a beating. The two continued to eat and talk before Hermione finally realised she hadn't spoken to her friends, and they never told her that they were leaving. She felt rude for a moment, but soon let it go as she continued her meal with Viktor.
As the tables eventually emptied and near nobody was left in the hall, Hermione decided it was best she head off to the common room too, or they'd be there until dinner.
"Get to the common room safe," Viktor stated as they prepared to finally part ways.
"It's Hogwarts, of course its safe," Hermione smiled, the look soon dropping once she saw the uncertainty in his eyes. "But yes, I'll get to the common safe. Thank you for the good company, and for earlier of course."
"That's just the tournament, don't thank me," he replied humbly. "I'll likely see you later?"
"Most likely, have a good rest of day," Hermione responded, smiling at him as she turned away and began to walk towards the common room in deep thought. I wonder what's going on in Hogwarts, Hermione thought, I wonder if Viktor will ever tell me, or what he even has to do with it. Hermione continued to walk in complete silence, thinking about Viktor and the school, and everything about him. He was strange, yes, but he was sweet and magnetic and Hermione liked being around him, so she was glad to be his friend.
As she entered the common room, she couldn't help but wonder if she somehow liked him more, or if it were just the fact that he dropped Draco in a single hit.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ THIS BUT FEEL FREE #TRANSLIVESMATTER #BLACKLIVESMATTER
As much as I love the HP series, it's really disappointing that the writer has such bigoted views. I'm not going to get political or deep, but I figured there's really nothing wrong with reminding whoever reads this that Trans lives matter.
Transphobia is still a serious issue in the world that has led to the deaths of countless lives. If it's something that you care about, I urge you to look into the ways of helping the world grow and become a safer place for trans people. And if you are trans/non-binary and are going through a struggle, take this as a sign that things can and will get better. It's still a dark time for minorities and theres a lot of hate going around, but with that theres a lot of love. I'm certain that you'll find your way to that love.
Similarly, there is still a lot of steps to be taken with the Black Lives Matter movement. While a lot of good changes have happened, it's still not enough. If you care, please sign petitions and donate if you're able to because firing officers who have used their power to KILL innocent people is not enough. These officers need to be arrested and prosecuted. This applies to the deaths of Breonna Taylor and Elijah Mccain. Aside from this, there are still so many deaths that are yet to be looked into, but we have the power to bring this into light.
I'm not going to link or suggest any petition or website here, but I really do believe whats happening is important. I know social media and news have died down on the topic, but the reality is that protests are still happening and innocent people are still dying.
Say their names and don't forget it.
