Prompt: Getting lost in a corn maze

Yeah, Harvest Festival gave us this in canon but this is for those of you that read the Leslie/Ann fic I wrote last week :)

Ever since the Harvest Festival, Pawneeans decided that having a corn maze every year would be something that everyone could enjoy. What they didn't count on, unfortunately for them, were the people that would be inside the corn maze every year. It was night, and the Ludgate-Dwyers decided that it might be fun to explore the thing that usually just dredged up bad memories for April. She would normally have to remind herself that just because the first time they were in there was out of frustration and anger, the second time was after Andy said he did love her.

So, who could it hurt?

"Babe, did you say that it was the next right or left?" Andy sighed and April worried he might drop her, ruining the fun. She was very much enjoying the piggyback ride that was happening that night and did not intend on ending it any time soon. "Or was it the last one? Oh man, I'm pretty sure we're lost."

"We might die in here," she whispered into his ear.

"We might die in here," he repeated, forlorn.

Despite that, the sounds of children screaming and corn stalks rustling were all around them. Even as Andy dropped to his knees, April still stuck to his back, a group of teenagers passed beside them. They gawked for a moment but like any good wife in the face of her husband's defeat, April gave them a dead eyed stare that lingered until the kids walked a little faster and without looking back again.

"I have an idea," April said, keeping her arms slung around Andy's neck but wiggling them back and forth to get his attention.

"Oh thank God, I ran out when we got inside," his breathing was heavier but he stood up anyways. She laughed only because his exhaustion certainly wasn't from carrying her - he always got like this in these moments of panic. "I was hoping you would. You're so smart."

"I know," she kissed the bit of his jaw underneath his ear.

Turning to one side, facing the wall of corn itself, April dropped her voice into the depth that her singing worked and made a ragged, throaty caw.

Andy didn't react at all to her raven mimicry but soon after the maze began to shake around them. The green rustled in the dark, Andy's arms underneath her legs tightened around him and she could feel him drop into that preparatory stance that Chris taught him for running. That was worth a chuckle and she was about to tell him not to worry when a lanky figure loomed over the two of them just to the right.

She was the first to look, unsure if the call for help would work.

"You called?" Orin spoke slowly.

"Yeah, help us get out of this dumb maze," she answered and he started walking at a brisk pace down the path without responding.

Andy followed, but soon he was full of questions.

"Where did he come from?"

"The maze," April answered. "He was born here."

"Is that how he knows where to go?" Andy asked, voice shaky with every step and also awe. "What was that noise you made? Can you teach me? It'd be cool to call on Orin whenever I get lost. You think he could help me find my car keys in the morning? They get lost all the time."

"Andy-"

"Your friend is so weird," Andy said with a laugh when they were just a few steps away from the exit to the maze.

"Thank you," Orin answered before almost sliding backwards into the thick tangle of shadows that the night afforded the usually transparent wall of corn.

Andy finally let her down at the end, unused muscles in her own legs almost giving way. He slipped his sweaty hand in hers but it was the perfectly gross kind of sweat from carrying her around and running that she didn't mind so much. Especially when he turned to her, out of breath.

"Is he okay in there?" Andy asked with what seemed like genuine worry.

"Oh, he'll be fine," April shrugged and started to move but pulling him with her didn't work this time. Normally Andy would just follow, but when he stood his ground April could barely budge him. "What? He's okay. It's how he has fun this time of year."

"Yeah, but... should we, like, see if he wants to come over? Or something, I don't know," he looked into that maze and sighed. April stopped trying to drag him away and turned to look at how concerned he actually was and, frankly, it warmed her heart. "He's not lonely, right? Orin always just kinda shows up and-"

"He's fine, Andy," she reassured him and moved closer, trying to fight away a smile and losing so terribly. "We could invite him over to scare away anyone that comes to our door."

Andy grunted and looked back at her.

"He could be the doorman at our Halloween party this year," Andy offered.

"I'm sure he'd like that," April acquiesced and stood up a bit to give him a quick kiss and couldn't stop when she smiled a little against his lips. When they broke away, she couldn't help herself. "I love you."

"Love you too," he answered but had the most quizzical look Andy Dwyer could come up with.

"For being so cool about my friend. Let's go home," she said with her best remembered attempt at a cool, distant shrug. Then, she remembered what he had asked. "But first, I gotta teach you how to call for him."

Together, they walked back to the car with April making that weird squawking as Andy tried to replicate it. Several times it turned into a crooning song and she couldn't stop laughing when he made a frustrated attempt that came out as a nasally whine from deep in his chest. By the time they reached the car, he was almost there and sat in the driver's seat trying to match the noise she made for the entirety of the drive home.
