(A.N. This chapter takes place the morning after Always Be Their Angel – read it if you haven't already so this chapter will make more sense xx – so Isabella has only just found out about how she was conceived and Troy's real relation to her. Let me know what you're thinking of these moments so far :) )
Troy, Gabriella and Isabella were all sitting in the lounge room that morning, Troy having found his wife and oldest daughter asleep on the couch. "So Bella, while Ari and Aidan are still asleep, how are you feeling about everything you found out yesterday?"
"It's still kinda confusing, everything just feels crazy but I understand why you and Mom did what you did and some stuff from when I was little makes more sense."
"What do you mean?"
She bit her lip. "Well like why Nana Lucille didn't like me when I was younger. I didn't understand why she didn't like me, I didn't think I was any different from Ari except that you would've had me when you were a lot younger but now I know why she was like that. She didn't like me because I wasn't your daughter."
Gabriella stroked her daughter's hair. "It's alright Baby Girl, she didn't like me either."
"She liked you once you had Ari because Ari would actually be Dad's daughter, that's why she didn't like me. That's why she still didn't like me when Aidan was born."
Troy spoke up. "She's gotten better though hasn't she? If not, please tell me Angel and I'll -"
"Dad it's fine. She spoke to me after we brought Aidan home and it's been ok since then."
They'd just arrived home from the hospital and now Troy, Lucille, Maria, Isabella and Arabella were in the living room while Gabriella put a sleeping Aidan into his bassinet. Lucille turned to Isabella who currently had Arabella on her lap. "Isabella, can I speak to you for a minute?"
The girl nodded and turned to her little sister. "I'll be back Ari, then we can play." The little girl nodded and cheered making everyone smile before Isabella followed Lucille into the kitchen. The older woman gestured Isabella to sit on one of the stools and took a similar position. "So what exactly did you want to talk about?"
Lucille sighed. "I wanted to start by saying that I'm sorry for how I acted at the hospital, I shouldn't have barged in and demanded to hold Aidan, I should've just waited until you got to hold your brother for a bit and waited my turn." Isabella only nodded in response. "When I was speaking to your dad, he told me that you feel as though I treat you different. Can you tell me what I do to make you feel that way?"
Isabella looked down and timidly responded. "For as long as I can remember, you've always been my dad's mom, it was never the same as it was with Nonna. I never received any form of attention from you and if I did, it was only because I was trying so hard to get your attention and it usually ended up being a negative response. I just thought that it was just how you were, but then Ari was born.
You were so excited to see her and hold her and just be around her. I just didn't understand - I don't understand why you love her so much and not me. Then when we saw Aidan and you were telling me to hand him over, it upset me that I was the one getting treated differently and I didn't even know what I did wrong. I don't know what I've been doing wrong."
Her statement made Lucille sigh. "Isabella, I'm sorry if I made you feel that way, it was wrong of me to treat you that way, you're only a kid and I'm an adult so I should've known better... You haven't done anything wrong Isabella and I'm sorry that I've been taking it out on you, that was very wrong of me. I've been angry for so many years that Troy became a father so young and that I thought he didn't get a chance to enjoy his high school and college years, but I shouldn't have taken it out on you."
"But how come you love Ari and Aidan but not me, we all have the same mom and dad."
Lucille tensed, being made aware that Isabella didn't know the truth. She refused to tell the girl, knowing it wasn't her place, that Troy and Gabriella would tell the girl when they were ready and when they thought that she was ready to handle the news. "I know Isabella and I'm sorry. I let my grudges and anger get the best of me and I unfortunately took it out on you. I promise to start being better with you and treating you the same as your brother and sister."
Isabella nodded in response before they went back out into the living room.
"Now that I think about it, it makes sense why she never said that she loved me or anything."
"Bella -"
"No it's ok, I'm not upset about it. I'm just glad that everything makes more sense now." She looked over at Gabriella and saw that she was looking down. "Mom, are you ok?"
"I'm fine Baby Girl, I just - there's been a question I've been needing to ask you but I'm afraid of what your answer is going to be."
"What is it?"
Gabriella sighed. "Now that you know about... him, your real dad. What are you wanting to do about it? Are you wanting to meet him or spend any time with him."
Isabella could see the fear and heartbreak behind her mother's eyes and immediately hugged her. "No, I never want to meet him, he hurt my mama so I know he's a bad person."
Gabriella sighed in relief and hugged her daughter tightly. "Thank you Baby Girl, I'm so relieved. I would be so scared every second that you were with him."
Isabella shook her head. "He hurt you and he tried to take me away from you once, he's never getting the chance to do it again."
"How - how do you know that? How do you know that he tried to take you away?"
"Dad gave me the scrapbook you made and I read the letters. One from when I was born and the other was the day you got me back. I could tell from what you wrote that it hurt you and I never want to hurt you Mama, I love you."
"I love you too my sweet girl."
The family spent the rest of the morning talking about lighter topics and just spending time together.
