Isabella was now 25 and she had moved into her own apartment, which was still close by to her parent's house. Arabella was 15 and Aidan was 13 but she'd kept her promise to be there for all the important moments in their lives. She was at home reading a book when her phone rang, she smiled seeing her sister's caller id. "Hey Ari."
"Hi Bella."
Isabella could hear the nervousness in her sister's voice, a large contrast from her normally confident personality. "Is everything ok Bubba?" Regardless of how old Arabella got, it would always be her nickname from her older sister. "You sound nervous."
"I'm ok. Mom wanted me to ask you if you wanted to come over for dinner tonight and um I have something to tell you if you do come."
She smiled sadly. "Of course I'll come over, tell Mom I'll be there and you know you can always tell me anything Ari, we're sisters and I'll always here for you whenever you need me."
"I know and the same for you Bella."
"Ok then, I've got some work to do but I'll be over at 5:30 so we have some time to talk about whatever you want to tell me."
"Alright, I'll see you tonight, love you."
"Love you too Ari, bye."
That evening, Isabella opened the door to her parent's house as she had her own key. "Hi everyone, I'm here." She walked into the kitchen and kissed Gabriella on the cheek. "Hi Mama, dinner smells great."
Gabriella turned herself and hugged her daughter. "Hey Baby Girl, thanks, I hope you're hungry."
"I'm starving." She giggled. "Where's Dad, Ari and Aidan?"
"Your dad and Aidan are outside playing basketball and Ari is in her room, she's been kinda quiet recently and I'm not sure why, I've asked if she's ok but she doesn't really seem to want to talk with me about whatever's bothering her."
Isabella saw the sadness in her mother's eyes and hugged her. "Don't take it personally Mama, all teenage girls do it. I don't think there's anything wrong, maybe she's just waiting for the right time to tell you, whatever it is. Ari's a good kid and I doubt anything bad is going to come out of whatever is on her mind."
"Thanks Bella, you're right. I just remember when you guys were little and used to come to me and your dad for everything but now -" She shook her head. "Never mind, I know you guys are growing up, well you've already grown up my sweet girl, I just miss it sometimes. How about you go out and see your dad, brother and sister while I finish up?"
Isabella nodded and kissed her mother's cheek before walking outside to their basketball hoop. "Hi Dad, Aidan."
Troy paused their game – much to her brother's dismay – and walked over to hug his daughter. "Hey Bella, how are you?"
"I'm good." She returned his hug and walked over to her brother. "I know you're probably getting too old for this but I'm gonna do it anyway." She said hugging her brother, which he returned. "How are you Kiddo?"
"I'm fine and I'm not too old, just not around people please sis."
"It's only Dad and I don't think he cares." She saw the look in their eyes and laughed. "Alright I'm gonna go say hi to Ari so you two can get back to your game. I'll see you inside for dinner."
"Bye Bella." They both responded before returning to their one-on-one.
She walked upstairs to her sister's room and knocked on the door, entering when she hear the quiet 'come in.' "Hey Ari." She said sitting on the edge of her bed. "I spoke to Mom downstairs and she said that you've been quiet, she's worried about you. Does this have anything to do with what you wanted to talk to me about?" Arabella only nodded in response. "Alright then, I'm all ears, you can tell me anything Bubba."
Arabella let out a breath before telling her sister. "There's a guy in my class that I've liked for a long time, well you know him, it's Max. He finally asked me out the other day and he wants to take me out after his game on friday. But Aidan is on the team with Max and I don't think Aidan likes him very much. The school sees Max as a bad boy and I guess he plays it on a bit, but he's different with me. He's not the same guy that the team sees. I really want to go out with him on Friday but I don't know if I'll be allowed to."
Isabella sighed. "Wow, I had no idea you liked Max, why didn't you tell me?"
"Liking someone you've been friends with almost your whole life doesn't usually go anywhere so I didn't see the point."
"Ok, I get that. Look Ari, if you really want to go out with him, you have to tell Mom and Dad because if you don't go, you'll regret it and if you go without telling them, they're gonna lose trust and it's gonna hurt them Bubba. I remember when I told Mom and Dad about Josh, except that Mom already knew about him. Now Dad wasn't very keen on it because at the end of the day, he's always going to see us as his little girls but he trusted me to let me make my choices. Mom and Dad will trust you to do the same and at the end of the day, as much as we love Aidan, he doesn't really get a say in who you date, it's Mom and Dad."
"I know, I'm just nervous to tell them."
Isabella hugged her. "I know you are but you don't have to be. Mom and Dad will love and support you no matter what. If you want, I can come with you to tell them?" Arabella nodded. "Ok, we can talk to them after dinner. Was that the only thing bothering you?" When she nodded, Isabella sighed. "You know I love talking to you Ari, about anything and everything, and I love that you feel comfortable enough to come to me for things like this, but you know you can always talk to Mom about anything."
"Yeah I know and I normally would, but I've never had a boyfriend before and I've never gone on a date and I just wanted to ask you first since you've done all this before."
"I understand that Ari and there's nothing wrong with it. You always feel a little nervous, even though you don't have to be. Gosh I remember when I was first introduced them to Will (her fiance), I was 22 and I was still nervous but they'd never do anything to hurt us Bubba, only what they think is best. They trust you and I know they're going to let you make your own decisions. Now let's go down for dinner and we can talk to them after."
Arabella nodded and hugged her sister. "Thanks Bella, I love you."
"That's what sisters are for Ari and I love you too."
After dinner, the family all sat in the living room and Isabella started the conversation. "Ok guys, Ari has something to tell you."
Isabella nodded to her sister and the 15-year-old began. "So um I know that you've noticed I've been quiet recently and this is the reason why... Max asked me to go out with him after the game on Friday. I've liked him for a really long time and he likes me back, he's different with me than he is with everyone else, so can I go out with him on Friday?" She looked at her family to see her mother's smiling face, her father's hesitant expression and her brother's anger. She looked to Isabella who nodded for her to continue. "So is it ok? Mom? Dad?"
Gabriella shocked her by getting up and hugging her youngest daughter. "Of course it's alright Sweetheart. Is that what's been bothering you?" Arabella nodded. "Oh Ari, you never have to worry about telling us stuff, you know we'll always support you, no matter what."
"Thanks Mom, I love you." She said before turning to Troy, who had a thoughtful look on his face. "Dad?"
Troy sighed. "I'm not keen about it, of all the people on the team, Max is the one I hear most about from your brother."
"But Dad, that's not -" He held up his hand to silence her.
"But, if you say he's different with you, I can believe that because I know how different I was with your mom when we were in high school. We trust you Ari and we know you'll do the right thing so you can go out with him on Friday but we need to have a little talk first."
"Dad, please -"
"It's not what you think." He turned to his son."Bud, would you mind going up to your room for a second, I don't think you need to hear this conversation yet." Aidan nodded, leaving the room. "Alright, we're trusting you to make your own decisions, just as we did with Bella but you have to promise us one thing." He continued when Arabella nodded. "You have to promise that you won't let this boy force you into anything you don't want and if he starts showing any traits that make you question the person you thought he was, you come tell one of us ok?"
Arabella nodded slowly, making Gabriella sigh. "Ari, the reason we're so tough on this rule is because I went through it when I was 13. My boyfriend was 16 and he became abusive to me and I did nothing about it until he raped me. I don't want any of my babies to have to go through the same thing that I did. So please promise us that you'll be careful with this boy."
Arabella nodded and hugged her mother. "I promise Mama, I'm sorry."
Gabriella wrapped her arms around her daughter. "It's ok Baby, it's not your fault, it's no one's fault except that man. We just love you so much Sweetheart and we don't want to see you get hurt."
"I love you guys too. I know I don't always show it as much as I should but I do."
