Silverpaw woke up to a prodding on her side. It was Frostpaw.
''What do you want!?'' Growled Silverpaw.
''Ravenstalk said you and Tawnypaw on elder duty.'' Silverpaw groaned. Elder duty! That was for new apprentices! She had been an apprentice for five moons now! She got up and stomped towards a split in the camp wall with a piece of prey in her jaws. She walked in, she could see the elders sharing news with Tawnypaw.
''Ah, welcome young Silverpaw.'' Rasped the old voice of Hawkeye.
''Hi.'' Mewed Silverpaw. ''I have a mouse. Um... I can get some more if you want.'' She muttered. Hawkeye nodded in thanks.
''Can you get another mouse and Tawnypaw, do be a dear and get us some water, then we can tell you a story or two.'' She mewed.
Once they had all done, the elders looked around.
''Oatwhisker, i do believe you have a story or two to share.'' Mewed Rabbitleap.
''Yes, yes. How about a story of my old life. The life of a kittypet?''
The two appretices nodded, Silverpaw, less enthusiastically.
''Well, I remember one story that i will never forget.
You see, when I was a young kit, i was taken away from my mother at just a moon old to live with some twolegs. On that journey however, I was in a small den that was covered all over exept for a door, which was made off hard metal vines. It was not closed properly, so i got out. I realised, I was in a monster. I then found a thing. It was a dog-kit. Of course, I did notknow what a dog was. So, I opened its door, and it lunged at me. I saw it, it looked calico in colour, but with theese long, droopy ears that lay by its head. Barking and screeching ensued. It chased me all around the monster until we came to the front seats. Because, you see, twolegs order monsters where to go. The monster stopped and they put the dog-kit back in the rear of the monster, while i stayed with the twolegs. That was the nearest I had ever been to death.''
Oatwhisker groomed his tail. ''Darm flea. Silverpaw, can you get some bile?'' Silerpaw nodded and padded out, welcoming the sun on her pelt, then she went to the medicine den to get the bile.
As the sun reached his highest, her duty was finished. she padded off to get some prey and arrived back to the apprentice den. Why was she chosen for elder duty? She had done great on her training. She had not had a break for ages. As well as that, she had to gaurd the camp and care for everyone else tomorrow because, 'Ravenstalk said.' Why? Her brother was dead yes. But she did not have to keep her in camp! She growled. The Gathering was in a few days, she had better be chosen. Her tail lashed in annoyance. The kits are going to be apprenticed soon, she wouldn't have to do this any longer. She took a deep breath. she just, needed to accept the fact that she was the youngest. she always would be.
