Chapter two: Meeting
The first couple of days went by like a train. Sarah got to know some of the boys. They seemed weary of her, but they remained polite. She got into a routine with Billy: what he wanted, what he didn't need,… There wasn't a lot of unpacking to do, but she tried settling in and making the room feel homey.
On a chilly Saturday morning Sarah went to the kitchen and noticed Billy was dressed differently. "What's going on?"
"I'm going to fish with Charlie, he's the chief of Forks. Sorry, I forgot to mention it."
"Ow, sure, no problem. I could do the laundry instead or if you'd like I could do grocery shopping." She proposed, looking at Emily.
"You'd do that? It wasn't in the job description."
"I've done more than that in the past. No big deal."
"Great! I'll make a list and then we can go together. I don't like going alone into the city."
Two hours later the two women arrived back in the forest. When Emily drove the car towards the front porch Sarah got the feeling of coming home. The Quilletes and Blacks may have been hesitant at first, but they were slowly warming up to her.
One night she was left alone in the house. Sam told her they were going on a hike together- as a family. She didn't like the feeling of being left out, but at least that meant some alone time. There was little quiet time inside the house. There was always some boy gorging on a meal, someone asking Billy for advice,… So she took out her diary and turned on some music.
Meanwhile round the campfire a couple of miles further by the beach.
"Come on boys. She's a nice and caring girl, in fact she reminds me of… your mother." Billy said.
After a moment of silence Jared quipped "I guess she's alright, she did correct an algebra mistake I made."
"She did cook that delicious meal with Emily… and if they're getting along." Quil smiled goofily and munched on a snack.
"What?" Jacob asked, irritated when Paul jibbed his side "I haven't seen much of her. She has a car, that must mean something, right?"
The whole table looked at him and burst with laughter. "That's the Jacob we know!"
"It takes a car to get to notice the girl." Sam added grinning, who was normally stoic and serious.
A couple of days later Sarah had decided to prepare a meal for everyone without Emily's help. If only she could reach that jar on the highest shelf. No matter how much she stretched and jumped her hand kept touching air. "Pfff." Sarah huffed.
Suddenly two strong hands wrapped around her waist and lifted her up.
"Jacob Black you better count yourself lucky I'm no longer afraid of heights or else I would have screamed."
"Good to know because I have sensitive ears. Wait.. how did you know it was me? We've barely met."
"Exactly. You're the only one I haven't seen, felt or smelled." she said, whirling around in his arms. Their eyes locked. It was the first time she could actually see which colour his irises were. For almost a full minute they just looked at each other.
"Sorry 'bout that." She mumbled, blushing "Why don't we talk after my shift on Saturday?" Sarah wondered where that brave voice came from. When nothing came, she walked away "Never mind.. I better take this to the kitchen."
"Wait!" he said, grabbing her wrist a little forcefully. His touch on her skin was scolding hot "Tomorrow night."
Sarah nodded and smiled.
