Chapter 3: we fight, we love

Jacob Black was walking back and forth in the woods. His feelings were all over the place. But it weren't just his own emotions, he could feel Sarah's as well.

Jacob had been staring at Sarah for a while. She looked so cute trying to reach something on the highest shelf. Eventually he decided on helping her. The moment he lifted her up he felt the perfect swell of her hips and something within him stirred. He was perplexed she even knew it was him standing behind her. The moment their eyes met everything clicked. All sounds fades to the background. He only had eyes and ears for Sarah.

Jacob Black had imprinted. The realization had hit him so hard he could barely reply to her request. Of course he wanted to spend as much time with her as possible. He just wasn't capable of speaking anymore.

Since everyone could hear eachothers thoughts: everyone knew.
Emily decided to have 'the talk' with him about treating Sarah nicely. After all, Billy had become rather attached to his care taker/companion and it was rare to find such a jewel.
Sam was next in line. He taught Jacob some tricks in order to control his thoughts on Sarah and he wanted to give some advice from man to man.

The next day Sarah tried to focus on doing her job instead of thinking about a dark haired boy.
After having mobbed several rooms Billy called her downstairs. "Sarah, why don't you quit early and take a seat?"
"Thanks Billy, but I'd like to get some fresh air first. I think the dust has gone to my head."
"Sure kid, just don't go too far." "Promise."

Sarah closed the door behind her and walked onto the lawn. She took a small gulp of air and let all the different scents wash over her. One of them was Jacob's.
"What do you smell?" Jacob whispered against the shell of her ear, not wanting to scare her.
"Mainly grass… and wood, wet from the rain." The young woman replied before giggling "I can smell myself."
"You smell delicious."
Her heart skipped a beat. She pulled herself together and stepped forward, away from his bodyheat. "I smell a deer… you can hear it running."
"That's you heartbeat." He grinned lopsided, but his wolf senses admitted there was indeed a doe nearby.
"I smell berries, east, and sandalwood on our left."
Now he became curious. Surely she had been outside and found the berries?
"Wait there's more." Sarah said, holding up her hand, and turned around "What's the mystery called Jacob Black?"
For a moment it seemed like his eyes turned a darker shade but she discarded it as a trick of the light. "Everyone's got secrets Jacob, some are best kept hidden while others, eventually, bubble up to the surface."
"Why did such a smart woman become a caretaker?"
"Because she's a masochist who loves torturing herself by seeing happy families." The moment the words left her mouth she regretted saying them.

"Sarah."
"I shouldn't have said that." she remarked, turning away from him "You must think I'm mad." "
Don't say that. The things you do for Billy, for the boys.. Everyone agrees: This is your home. I... I want you to be part of our family."
"But how? I'm not a Quilette or a Black, your blood doesn't run through my veins. Besides I don't want to be like a sister to you.. Oh my God, what is it with you that makes me so comfortable around you, like there's not a care in the world and everything's just… peachy?"
"Sarah I can't tell you right now, one day…" he replied, feeling equally frustrated and helpless.
"So I get to spill but you go all hush hush?!"
"You need to calm down." He said, forced.
"You're right." She said and walked away without remorse.

Once back inside all eyes were on Sarah. In the distance they heard a howl and the echoes of an angry animal.
"Excuse me for a second." she mumbled and retreated to the bathroom.
*inner monologue*
'Breathe. You really went over the top.'
'I did? O shut up conscience.'
'He really cares for you. I don't think he wants to be your sister either, more like 'I wanna put a ring on it' kinda family. Think about Jacob, how do you think he's feeling?'
'Of course he was just being nice…' she reasoned 'And I was being…' '
A complete b**ch!'
'Never thought I'd be compared to that but I deserve it.'
Sarah agreed 'God, what mustn't his family think of me?'
'One problem at the time girl. Think about Jacob.'
'Oh no! He's out there in the woods on his own… I heard an animal, it sounded like… a wolf...'
'Chillax. Big boy can take care of himself. I mean have you seen his torso?'
'Okay time to break out of this.'
Sarah splashed some water on her face and rubbed her temples.

She returned to the living room.
Billy looked worried.
"I'm sorry you all had to hear me and Jacob fight.. It wasn't clever nor fair of me to drop my frustrations on him like that… Billy I'm sorry…Though it's not you I should apologize to. I would perfectly understand, with all due respect to you and your wonderful family, if you want to fire me."
For a moment the look on Billy's face made her shrink away even further. But the look only lasted a moment before he started laughing. He rolled his wheelchair towards Sarah and gave her a hug that could compete with a Grizzly bear. "You're already too far in it Sarah. You're part of this family, we all feel that way." He said, motioning towards the others.

Through the haze of tears she saw the other Quilettes smile and nod apprehensively
"We all have our fights sometimes, but we always forgive each other because no matter what, family sticks together."
"You're the nicest people I've ever worked for and it's an honour to be part of your family."
"Of course; as you already discovered, just from looking into Jacob's eyes, we bare a secret but it's up to Jacob to open up to you."
"I understand. It was selfish and inconsiderate of me to demand the truth. I won't ask any more questions."
"Good. Now we eat."
"But… what about Jacob?!"
"Oh he can take care of himself. By the time we're finished he'll be cooled off. Besides, all the boys come back when they're hungry."

When dinner was over Jared and Kim retreated to their room while Embry and Paul sat down to watch an old football game.
"I think Jacob wants to talk to you." Sam said.
Sarah had no idea how he knew that but indeed she found him outside, sitting on the porch. "Sam told me I'd find you here…" she started casually and sat down slowly to collect some courage "Jacob I'm terribly sorry for what I did, my words… I shouldn't have become angry with you…. Can you forgive me?"
"I could if you would hand over my dinner." He grinned sheepishly. "
Of course." she smiled, relieved, while watching him eat.
"See something you like?" he asked, with his good-naturedly flirting tone, catching her gaze.
She turned her gaze away, blushing. Sarah felt ready to get up.
"Please, stay with me here for a while longer?"
"Sure."

They looked up at the sky, which had turned a violet blue, and counted the stars. "This feels nice." she said noticing their hands had found each other.
With his thumb Jacob made circular motions on the back of her hand. "It does."
Sarah relaxed and let her head fall on his shoulder. She noticed how perfect they fit together. It all felt so strange. One day she was a woman without a job, the other she had work, felt complete,…

Despite their comfortable position and his inhumanly high body heat a shiver ran down her spine.
"Let's get you inside." "I'll clean up for you." she replied, heading for the kitchen.
Emily was waiting for her. She looked proud. "Thanks dear."

When Sarah returned to the living room Jacob patted the seat next to him. "Why don't you hang out with the guys and I tomorrow? You've barely seen anything at La Push."
"Sounds like a great idea!"

Despite performing her usual sleeping ritual, Sarah couldn't fall asleep. She prayed the sandman or Morpheus would come by. Although the temperature in the room was nice, she felt a little cold. Sometime through the night she gravitated towards the wall.
'It's just a wall.'
'True, but Jacob is on the other side.'
'Is he?'
she wondered, touching the surface of the wood.
After a moment of deliberating she pulled the blankets from the bed and laid down on the floor, hugging it. Immediately she felt at peace and fell asleep.
