Chapter 6: Moonlight fight
In the evening Sarah and Jacob simply took a stroll along the forest edge. Suddenly Jacob stopped walking. "Go to my room. Promise me you'll stay there."
Of course Sarah wanted to protest but knew better. She was frustrated with all this secrecy. But the look in his eyes were dead serious. She gave his hand one final squeeze before running off towards the house. She passed all of the Quillete boys and Leah, the only female.
Seconds turned into minutes. Minutes into hours… At first she tried to keep busy: read a book, listen to music,.. after a while she started pacing. Suddenly different kind of feelings washed over her. Anger, pain, fear… "Jacob is that you?" she asked out loud. Sarah just knew it. She couldn't take it anymore. She splashed some water on her face grabbed one of Jacob's hoodies and ran downstairs.
"He's in pain. I can feel it."
"There's nothing you can do Sarah. They're strong enough." Emily said, trying to block the door.
"You can't stop me." She replied, tears in her eyes. Swiftly she took the bag with all the medical supplies she carried around to take care of Billy. There were medicine, fresh towels, bandages, a bottle of water,…
Somehow her feet knew exactly where to go. Sarah was faster than before. She ignored the stinging of lungs, having little condition, and kept going. Until suddenly she heard a howl, piercing the night sky. A shiver ran down her spine. As she came closer to the battle Sarah noticed shapes in the shadows, fighting with things that looked human. The shapes looked like wolves, only bigger and more colourful. They clawed at the human-like creatures and tried to bite them. Then she noticed one of the wolfs lying down. It was desperately trying to get back up, but seemed to weak.
Carefully she approached it.
Of course it turned its head viciously. But then its eyes shifted as the beast seemed to recognize her.
"Jacob?"
He stretched out a paw, hoping she would go away.
But Sarah was going nowhere without him. Swiftly she jumped behind him and embraced him. "We're gonna be okay Jacob." She whispered "Let me take care of you."
He licked her face in agreement.
She cleansed out the wound with some alcohol and poured some water so he could drink. Her presence alone seemed to sooth him. Eventhough she was worried Jacob would get hurt again she let him go and fight with his brothers. "I promise to stay hidden."
He touched her arm with his nose, nudging her towards some bushes and ran off to fight.
Soon the human-like creatures were outnumbered. Sarah could tell Jacob was one of the best fighters of the group.
The Quillette boys apprehended one of the creatures for further interrogation.
Jacob-wolf approached her again.
Sarah hugged him fiercely, tightening her fists in his fur. "This explains so much."
He nodded, looking unsure. She seemed to take things well.
"Are there more out there? Maybe we should head back."
Jacob lowered himself so she could climb on.
"I"ll race ya" Sarah yelled, already on the run.
All the wolves ran after her. Jacob was the fastest, but he ran in perfect sync with his mate. He felt happy and free.
Jacob transformed behind some bushes and put on his shorts.
"Let me take a look at… Your wound, it's healed?" Sarah asked perplexed.
"We heal very quickly. But my initial wound was so big I couldn't get back up for a while."
"Thanks Sarah." Sam said "If you hadn't been there to take care of Jake, we wouldn't have won."
Sarah blushed.
"How did you run so fast?" Jared asked. "Oh isn't that normal for a werewolf's girlfriend?"
"No normally they don't get any special powers so to say." Jacob explained taking her hand "I do like the ring of girlfriend though."
"Lucky me, maybe I heal quickly too?"
"Let's not put that to the test."
"At least I can still warm my hands on your body." she grinned cheekily.
He did notice how cold she felt. "You risked your life out there for me. That was very brave. Now go warm by the fire before you get a cold."
Sarah pecked him on the cheek and ran off.
Back inside the house Emily got her a blanket and a cup of hot chocolate milk. She had made sandwiches, roast and pudding for all of them.
Once the men were finished outside Sarah got the whole vampire- werewolf tribe story. Of course she wasn't pleased with the animosity, the weirdness of it all. Like her fantasy book had suddenly become real.
But at least this mate-thing with Jacob felt right. Hence the tender but very passionate love making that night when she united with Jacob.
"My heroine." He whispered.
"My mate." she whispered, kissing his shoulder.
From now on Sarah could really face the world. Her lonely days were over. And with Jacob by her side, she felt safe and protected, even though her life got a whole lot more dangerous and complicated.
There was no need for a wedding, they were already bonded, marked for life by each other.
The end.
