Promises
Matt sat down at the kitchen counter deep in thought. It had been a very strange few days. The Deputy had deliberately sought out him and Angie. He had said they were the best, that they were the only ones he could trust to help him prove his friend had been murdered. Sighing he sipped his coffee. They had wanted him to leave them alone, let them try to fix the air conditioning and move on but that hadn't happened.
"Son?"
"Hey." He looked up to see his Dad sit down. "You ok?"
"I'm fine." He lifted his own mug to his lips. "It's you I'm worried about."
"Don't be. I'm fine."
"Ok, so that's why you are sat alone in the kitchen at 4 am staring into space." The older man smiled slightly. Don knew his son well enough to know when insomnia kicked in there was a fair chance something was bothering him. "You know? If I was trapped in a shipping container drowning just a few hours ago I wouldn't be able to sleep either."
"I wasn't drowning."
"I just thank God that Angie and Danica got to you in time. You saved Conroy. He's a good kid and he has potential but he's not worldly." Don sighed.
"Yeah."
"So I get why you were quiet at dinner."
"Just tired."
"Ok." Don nodded. "So, what was he talking about? Promises?"
"He got me to promise." Matt smiled slightly. "That I would be his wingman at the singles event. There's this girl he's too shy to approach so I said that I'd go help him out."
Don smiled. "The path to true love eh?"
"Something like that."
Don nodded. "So? When you going to tell her?"
"Dad?"
"He told me. I've seen it with my own eyes. Don't think these old eyes don't see what's going on." He watched as Matt looked away, blushing furiously. To Don, his son would always be the 15 year old hockey obsessed kid who was still painfully shy around anything not related to hockey. "You and Angie."
"What about her? Us?"
"You're in love with her."
Matt started chocking on his coffee. Don smiled as he tapped his son on the back. "Dad!"
"I'm right. You remortgaged this house, you drop everything for her, you hate anyone who may show an interest in her and I've seen the way you look at each other." Don watched as his son turned a more vivid shade of red than he believed to be healthy.
"She's my partner! My best friend."
"I know ." Don smiled. "But she could be more if you got your act together son. Remember you promised Conroy."
Don got to his feet and left the kitchen as Matt began to recover his composure. "Matthew?"
"Yeah." Matt looked up.
"My boy was always taught to keep his promises." Don nodded before leaving the room.
