After about an hour of talking, they were in the middle of Jasiri's territory, away from Jasiri's clan. They were talking and laughing, and finding that they had more in common then they thought. They had conversations that seemed to be random and even on some disagreements, they were able to have fun.
"Kion isn't that bad," Jasiri chuckled.
"Yeah he is!" Janja exclaimed.
"Kion must be some hungry maniac to keep all that food to himself! I can imagine him eating a whole zebra herd and him hiding behind the excuse of the Circle of Life."
"Well, hey! Not all of us Circle of Life believers tend to do that," Jasiri mentioned.
"And you haven't been a goody goody all that much either."
"That's a different story," Janja rolled his eyes as he said it.
"See, unlike Kion, I wasn't raised in a tropical paradise with Hakuna Matata."
"So I take it that you were born and raised in the Outlands?" Jasiri asked.
"Raised, yeah. I wasn't born in the Outlands, but I guess it doesn't matter," Janja replied.
Janja's ears which were once perk, had flattened. He looked away from Jasiri and started walking forward.
"Can I ask where you were born?" Jasiri asked with a curious grin.
Janja looked back and directly at Jasiri. His ears perked up again, as his once enemy continued to have a look of interest in him.
"Well, I was born in the Pridelands," Janja said hesitantly. " But it's no biggie. That's not important."
" How did you end up in the Outlands if you were born a Pridelander?" Jasiri asked.
Janja flattened his ears nervously, and he started to feel hot. " Well, I uh better get to the boys. I haven't really slept so…"
" Okay then," Jasiri said. " I'll walk you over to your territory."
" No, I'm sure I can find my way," Janja reassured her with a nervous smile. " I'm not a lost pup you know."
" Sure," Jasiri giggled. " Maybe we can talk again sometime."
" I think this should be a one time thing," Janja said. " But it was fun while it lasted."
" Why do you think this should be a one time deal?" Jasiri asked as her head was cocked to the side.
" Because we are two different sides," Janja stated. " You are with the circle of life with Kion, and I'm on the hungry side with Scar. Being friends is just a big no no. And you're supposed to be the worst hyena ever!"
" Cleary, you don't really think that," Jasiri pointed out. " We were just laughing a moment ago. We don't have to be on different sides ethier. If you let me help you."
"I don't need help," Janja suddenly growled. " As much as you wish we were the same, we aren't. You think that life's all Hakuna Matata, while some of us are suffering! We have different values and different lives! We are not the same!"
Jasiri look taken aback, with her chin close to her chest, and her eyes wide. Janja sighed and turned away from Jasiri, with a pang of guilt and sad eyes. " I'll just leave now."
" Well, if you change your mind, I'll be in that same spot in my territory at night," Jasiri called out as Janja walked away with his head bowed. Jasiri kept watching him walk away until Janja was out of sight, making his way home.
The next day, Janja woke up without any dreams which was fortunate for him. But in exchange, he didn't get a lot of sleep. As he tried to sleep, he felt more and more guilty about the end of the conversation that they had. He was constantly thinking about how he overreacted to Jasiri's offering, and how she was so kind, even after that situation, and more importantly, after everything he had done to her.
She was kind to him, even after he almost killed her and her nephew and niece. Even after he tried to kill off her and her whole entire clan. Even after all of that, Jasiri still was willing to listen and was willing to help. He felt that was worse than her hating him. To him, she was the worst hyena he knew because she made him feel horrible and guilty for what he had done.
On that morning, he was still thinking about it. He was lost in his thoughts, not thinking about his surroundings or anything. He was staring at the ground as he laid down on his belly with his ears flat.
What have I done? Janja thought.
"You are really troubled." Janja snapped from his thoughts and looked up to Nne, who was in front of Cheezi and Chungu.
"Something really bad must of happened for you actually be guilty," Nne said.
"Me? Troubled? No!" Janja said while he stood up with a nervous smile.
The smile faded as he walked past them and he bowed his head.
"I'm fine," he sighed.
"Maybe you still want that hug?" Chungu suggested with a teeth bared smile.
"No,no,no. I'm…" Janja faded with his words.
He stared at the ground, as the guilt started kicking in again and making his heart sink. He just stopped, not being able to take another step. How did I mess up so bad? Janja thought. She's driving me out of my mind.
" Janja!" Janja snapped away from his thoughts to see a skink. " Scar's calling for the next plan."
" Okay, I'll be there in a second," Janja said as the skink moved towards the inside of the volcano on their territory. Janja announced that he was leaving for the next plan and then headed towards the volcano.
"JANJA!"
Janja's once flattened ears perked up in surprise as Janja jumped out of his thoughts. He put on a nervous smile.
"Yes, Scar?"
"How many times do I have to snap you out of your thoughts? This plan is very important and I don't intend to mess it up!" Scar growled.
"Sorry, Scar! I won't mess up your plan!" Janja exclaimed. Reirei and Kiburi, who were beside him on the ledge towards Scar, had rolled their eyes.
"If your thoughts are more important than the plan, I would suggest you share what's bothering you," Scar said.
"No, Scar!" Janja exclaimed. " You're way more important my thoughts!"
"Good," Scar growled. " I would give you the leading role in the plan but clearly you can't handle that today. The jackals will be getting it today. It's a shame that you, Janja, can't help but be bothered by something other than the plan."
Janja gulped with his body shaking. His ears were back to being pressed against his head. His body curled up a bit in fright.
After the plan was given to the army, they headed out to perform their tasks.
Scar raised a brow as he thought about Janja's questionable behavior. He looked over to Ushari. " Janja being emotional. I knew he wasn't the most brave creature, but I have never seen this behavior."
"Yeah," Ushari agreed.
"I wonder why he was so bothered."
"That Jasiri hyena," Scar replied. His eyes shrank to slits as he thought of it.
"She must be getting to him."
"Why do you think she has anything to do with Janja's behavior?" Ushari asked.
"Didn't you see him when he first told me about Jasiri?" Scar said.
"He was talking to her as if she was the opposite of what he was saying about her. He mentioned that she had a cute little smile, and kept mentioning how great she was at fighting as if he idolized her."
"Now that you mention it, I remember Janja making that dreamy expression on his face when he first mentioned Jasiri to me," Ushari recalled.
"But why do you think it would have to be her doing?"
"Knowing Janja, there is no creature or battle or consequence that would quench his hunger," Scar explained. " So someone very special must've have set him off course. Plus he's almost an adult, which is when they start finding mates. And him being a lonely male hyena surrounded by an all male hyena clan, just makes matters worse. It would just make him more desperate for a mate, which would make him turn to Jasiri. And if he turns to Jasiri, who is an ally to the Lion Guard, that could mean that he gets converted to their ways. That would explain why he looked so guilty; either being guilty of hurting Jasiri or guilty of betraying us."
"I thought it to just be puppy love," Ushari shared.
"Not a blossoming romance. But if what you say is true, then we should be cautious with him."
"Indeed," Scar nodded.
"He could betray us in any moment. Ushari, have your skinks keep an eye on Janja. I have a feeling that he won't be loyal for long if he is around that hyena."
