Raven woke up slowly to the cool breeze of spring warmth that drifted in through her bedside window which she had opened in the middle of the night to try and cool down, her body undetermined on whether it desired heat or cold air as the child within her was apparently restless, kicking for the entirety of the night with no discrimination towards Raven's desire for sleep. This kid had a lot of fight in her, and Raven intended to either tame it or harness it as the girl would grow up. She forced her eyes open slowly as the sunlight broke through and reaffirmed her assumptions, filling her vision with brightness that she flinched and rolled away from. She snuggled against the body beside her, head lying on his chest as she looked up at him.
"Finally awake?" Tai asked her with a chuckle as he ran his hand through her hair.
"How long have you been awake?" She asked him, breathing softly and staring out the window at the woods. Tai grunted as he shifted to make himself a little more comfortable and he shrugged.
"Not too long," Tai admitted as she looked up and kissed him. They smiled warmly at one another for a couple of moments before there was a knock on the door.
"Raven, you decent?" Qrow's voice came from the other side.
"No!" She yelled back annoyed. Qrow opened the door anyway, standing in the frame for a moment as Summer filled the hallway behind him.
"Did you two forget about our group meeting today?" Summer called out.
"I said I wasn't dressed!" Raven shouted at Qrow. He folded his arms and leaned against the opening.
"I figured it was fine since you're my sister, and a terrible liar, and Summer's a female anyway," Qrow replied.
"I never replied," Tai scolded. Qrow smirked.
"I'm sure it isn't much to look at," Qrow joked. Tai reached over and threw a pillow at Qrow, nailing him in the chest and the tall, slender Huntsman stumbled back into Summer who kept him from falling.
"Times wasting, come on!" Summer exclaimed as she took off down the hall. Qrow offered a grin and motioned after her with his head.
"Let's go," Qrow reiterated as he followed her. Raven and Tai clambered out of bed after a few more minutes, Tai making his way to the kitchen before Raven to find that breakfast had been prepared for them already.
"A bit eager today, aren't we, Summer?" Tai asked.
"Actually, Qrow made it!" Summer announced. "Isn't that great?" Tai glanced at Qrow with a coy smile.
"Trying to impress somebody?" Tai asked Qrow.
"How about I impress you with how far I can stick this blade through your chest before I get bored," Qrow asked. "Heads up, I won't get bored." Summer took a step between the two of them as Tai stood from his chair.
"Calm down you two," Summer scolded. "Who would he be trying to impress anyway?" Qrow glared at Tai, the blonde was well aware of why Qrow refused to reveal his feelings for Summer.
"Forget I said anything," Tai replied as he sat and noted Raven entering the kitchen in a light blue sundress.
"Rae, it looks great!" Summer exclaimed running to Raven and hugging her.
"It's too… cheery," Raven sighed.
"It looks amazing," Taiyang complimented.
"No, she's right. It's too cheery," Qrow agreed.
"You Branwens need to lighten up a bit," Summer told them as she sat and offered toast to Raven. "It won't be long before little Raven is running around the house and she needs a role model in her life that's going to teach her to look at the bright side!"
"That's why we have you here," Qrow teased. She reached over and smacked the back of his head, causing him a moment of stinging pain.
"I'll gladly help, but we all need to do our part," Summer noted as she scarfed down her food. "Now hurry up already, I want to get going!"
"What's the rush, short stack?" Qrow asked. She glared at him again and he smirked as he took a drink of his orange juice.
"I wanted to take you guys somewhere special this morning before I have to leave for the week on my mission!" Summer explained.
"Don't you have a mission too, Qrow?" Raven inquired.
"Yeah, but recently Oz has been sending us out separately," Qrow explained swallowing. "Probably in the hopes that we can cover more ground."
"You know Ozpin! He always has a reason for what he does, even if he doesn't tell us what that reason is," Summer reminded them. She leapt to her feet, gripping Qrow's hand and rushing for the door. "Qrow and I are heading out, see you love birds in a couple of minutes!" Qrow became flush as he was dragged away, closing the door of the brand-new cabin behind him and leaving the Xiao Longs in silence.
"She doesn't have an off switch, does she?" Raven asked.
"She's just trying to help," Tai noted. In the back of her mind Raven swore that she heard the roll of thunder, but she shook it off and smiled back at him.
"You love him, don't you?" Summer asked Raven. The scene had changed slightly as everything around her dimmed apart from herself and Summer who was now standing behind her. Their surroundings shifting until they were in the great hall of the school and Qrow and Tai were enjoying punch, undoubtedly arguing with each other. Raven remembered the night well, the first dance of their third year. Summer had broken her shell and for the first night since they'd joined Team STRQ, Raven and Qrow had forgotten their reason for coming to the school in the first place. "I know that look in your eyes, Rae, I've felt it before too."
"Why?" Raven asked.
"Why what?" Summer replied as she stood beside her.
"Why him? What's so great about him? He's kind of pathetic, acts cool but he isn't, is always going out of his way to protect me…" Raven began her list. Summer cut her off.
"Love's a strange thing. We don't get much of a choice in who we fall in love with, our heart runs away with these feelings and we just kind of become hostage to them. Not that it's a bad thing," Summer told her. A single tear slipped down her cheek and Raven turned to face her leader, the shorter girl turning away.
"Do you see anything in Qrow?" Raven asked her.
"He's nice, but it feels like every time I get close he pushes me away," Summer informed her. Summer wiped the tear from her face before smiling again and pushing Raven towards the guys, practically forcing her on Tai. "Come on, you two look like you could use dance partners!"
"I'm not really much of a dancer," Tai refused. Summer insisted, pushing harder on Raven who was turning red.
"Now is as a good a time as any to learn!" Summer declared. They bumped into one another, Tai offering his hand after a long moment leaving Qrow and Summer alone. "And you?"
"I'm not the best dancer, short stack," Qrow replied.
"Who cares," She asked beaming up at him. She laughed and it drew a smile to his lips. "Let's just have fun!"
"Alright, Summer," Qrow agreed. "Anything you say!"
The scene shifted again, lightning flashing through the sky and Raven glanced about as everything settled into place, her legs were already moving as she made her way through the dense woods, both her and Qrow matching the other's speed as they tore through Grimm without a moment of hesitation.
"It's almost boring at this point," Raven told him. Qrow didn't acknowledge her right away, swinging his scythe over a King Taijitu and pulling the trigger, slicing it in two before Raven followed through with a gravity infused blade on her sword, slicing through both heads in one swift motion. It collapsed into smoke, drifting away as a girl burst past in a flurry of roses, using a similar weapon to Qrow and blowing apart Ursai.
"Who was that?" Qrow asked. They watched for a moment before she crashed into a tree upside down and slid down the trunk, her brain scrambled from the initial impact. They jogged over to her. "Oh, it's you again."
"Guilty," Summer groaned. "You're the bird twins, right?" Raven and Qrow looked at each other.
"Sure," Raven replied. Summer looked at the two of them for a long moment before leaping to her feet and admiring Raven's blade.
"This looks awesome! How does it work!? How many Grimm have you killed with this thing? Did you make it yourself? Can I try it out sometime?" Summer rattled off. Qrow laughed as he scanned the area.
"Looks like you've made a friend," Qrow jested. Raven pushed Summer back and brushed herself off.
"I don't think so," Raven disagreed.
"Isn't it beautiful?" Summer asked. Raven blinked at the world was different, they stood on Summer's cliff with the forest below, admiring the view as Tai wrapped his arms around Raven, holding her as Qrow used Summer as an armrest.
"It's quite the view, Summer," Qrow replied.
"Just think, someday after we've both had children we can bring them up here to tell them stories and eat cookies!" Summer declared excitedly.
"Maybe you and cookies should get together," Qrow teased. Summer punched him in the shoulder, causing him to take a step away from her.
"Very funny," Summer replied.
"They'd be some pretty 'sweet' kids," Tai offered. Qrow looked down and shook his head. "What?"
"Save the dad jokes until Yang is born," Qrow requested.
"There's no need to be jealous of my ability to be clever," Tai added with a smirk.
"Is that how you took that?" Qrow inquired.
"I think I'd like that," Raven told Summer as she pulled away from Tai and peered out beside Summer. The thunder crashed again, this time breaking through and covering the landscape in darkness, the only thing shining out was the light from Summer's eyes as her weapon crashed against Salem's. "Summer!"
"We need to get there!" Qrow yelled beside her. As they ran, it seemed as if the ground refused to cooperate, they didn't get any closer to Summer who was doing her damnedest to fight Salem off. The fear in her eyes betrayed her, Raven could even see it from where she was and everything seemed to stop as Salem's blade crashed through Summer's stomach, impaling her as Summer was lifted off the ground, kicking and gripping the sword futilely. The scene came closer, Raven stopping short as she had the day that it had happened. Summer bit through the pain.
"You're so scared," Salem told her. "Is it death that you fear?"
"No," Summer spat out with blood that splattered on Salem's face. "I fear that I'll fail to defeat you. That you'll kill the people that I love. You can take my life, but if it saves the people I love, I have nto reason to be afraid." Summer's eyes lit up until the silver light exploded and when it disappeared Salem and Summer were both gone. Raven blinked a few times before realizing that she was staring at the ceiling of Yang and Blake's guest bedroom, her heart racing as tears streamed down her face. She sat up quickly, pulling on her helmet and grabbing her sword before creating a portal and marching across the field to Summer's grave.
"Every night since I've returned to Vale I can't get these memories out of my head!" Raven screamed as the rain soaked her and she threw the sword onto the grave. "Is this your way of getting back at me for leaving!? I had no choice, I was afraid! Your fear only ended up getting you killed, at least I'm still alive!"
"Was it worth it?" Qrow asked approaching her. She nearly jumped out of her skin, picking up her blade and turning quickly to face him as she held her sword out.
"Am I still inside of the lucid fear mongering nightmare?" Raven inquired. He chuckled, pushing her sword away with his flask before downing half of its contents in a single swallow.
"No, this is very much reality," Qrow said as he sat cross legged on the ground and ran a hand through his wet hair. "I was in town for a meeting with Ruby today and had to come out here to clear my head. Everytime I'm in Vale I have these visions of the past, like she's reminding me that I can be a better person."
"I didn't sign up for this," Raven griped as she turned away.
"Didn't you?" Qrow called after her. "You're the one who left." Raven marched back to him and strong armed him to his feet.
"You know good and well I had to," she seethed. He broke free and shoved her away.
"Did you, Rae?" Qrow asked. Raven's heart crashed against her chest. Only Tai and Summer ever called her that.
"He would've killed me!" Raven reminded him.
"So instead you let dad turn you into the scared animal you are now until you'd had enough and finally killed him?!" Qrow shouted. "He didn't come for me, did he? We could have worked together to take him down, none of this needed to happen." Qrow glanced away. "But if you hadn't left, who's to say that Ruby would have been born and saved Remnant?"
"I don't need to put up with this," Raven spat as she started to leave again.
"Raven, if you can't admit that you're broken you won't be able to make amends with Yang, and I think that's what Summer wants you to do," Qrow offered. "You'll lose her if you can't give up your pride for long enough to admit that you messed up. Don't run away again, she's all that you have left at this point." Raven gritted her teeth as lightning streaked across the sky high above them and brought more thunder with it. What choice did she have? She could run, but where would she run to at this point?
"Fine, I'll stay," Raven said as she stepped through a portal and left him there alone. Qrow looked at Summer's grave and chuckled.
"It looks like you did it, short stack. You finally got her to stay," Qrow admitted. He touched the stone for a long moment before leaving and flying away.
