Six days. There were only six days left between the last weekend that the team would be together, Neela's birthday, and the senior's graduation ceremony. It wasn't a lot of time and Neela had begun feeling this strange sense of urgency after Tawney had stopped in and tried to enlist their help with Coco, something seemed to stir inside of Neela. A need. A desire. This was it. The last Friday night of the school year would soon become the first Friday night of the summer and Neela wanted to tell Eliana how she felt before that happened. The idea of spending the summer together without telling Eliana turned into a kind of dread, a fear that she'd have a long miserable summer of misunderstandings and longing glances that Eliana wouldn't return and instead try and find someone else to fill the role.
157 hours, from the time that her alarm would sound for her to wake up, to the closing words of Glynda's speech; hopeful and meaningful words that they would take with them forever, onto bigger and better things, watching over Remnant and protecting the people that lived in it. Protecting Eliana, whether Neela finally found the courage to tell her or not. Beach parties and camping trips with the family. And Eliana would tease her with horrible things in the naive way that she always did. And Neela would suffer through it, knowing that she should have told her before the summer had begun so that she could know whether Eliana was meant to be hers, or if they were only destined to be friends.
9,420 minutes. It was hard to make an excuse for not having the time when she thought about it that way. What would it take? A minute, maybe two? Something simple, Eliana didn't need anything complex, Neela just wanted her best friend to know how she was feeling about their relationship… but she deserved something more than the simple "I think we should date" or "Are you free next weekend" talk. Neela wanted to tell Eliana exactly how she felt, she longed to describe the sensation that washed over her when Eliana brushed her braids or melted her with her smile. She'd go crazy, wouldn't she? If she went on like this much longer?
565,200 sec- Neela's alarm blared harshly in a way that annoyed her more than usual, her body and heart jump-started violently and off to the races as her mind tried and filter through her night filled with lucid dreams of actually telling Eliana how she felt, and the determination that had filled her moments before falling asleep. Her subconscious dealt with the details, categorizing what she did and didn't need and in the end her resolve surfaced. She cocked her head slightly, listening to Eliana's light and rhythmic breathing filled her with calm and she moved to the edge of her bed, taking a deep breath as the fatigue fled her bones.
Tonight was perfect. Tonight was the night that she could finally get it off of her chest. She'd make no excuses. She could leave her scroll behind if it helped prevent her from changing her mind, this was just the way that it had to be, wasn't it? But she'd told herself that before and hadn't followed through. What was so different about today? Why was that sudden guiding force that she'd stumbled upon the night before fading? What had even elicited it in the first place? It was something Eliana had said that night, there was no doubt about that, but what was it specifically?
"Neela," came a rough voice that nearly stopped Neela cold, her veins icing as she returned from her foggy memories of the previous evening. Titus sat as his desk, giving her a curious look as he moved to her with a finger on his lips. Why was he telling her to be quiet, he was the one who had spoken! Her nerves smoothed out as she lifted herself off of the bed, careful not to wake Eliana as she moved beside Titus and crouched on his left. The smirk on his face suggested that he knew something Neela wasn't aware of but he answered her question before she could even ask it. "You're finally going to tell her, aren't you?"
Neela sighed. She couldn't deny it, there was no point in doing so. They'd known her for the better part of nine months now, and even from the beginning Ilia and Titus read her emotions for Eliana like a book, just like everyone else. Her parents, her grandparents, hell, probably even her enemies were well aware of her intentions, but even though Eliana was browsing the same novel as everyone else, she wasn't quite able to find the page that Neela had opened up to. The one where the heroine is overly obvious and undeniably in love with her best friend… but the friend is too oblivious to see it. Neela nodded, keeping her breathing in check as she looked back at Eliana.
"I'm afraid that I'll chicken out, or that she won't understand what I'm trying to tell her," Neela confessed. His eyes softened as he nodded, glancing at Eliana briefly before returning his gaze to Neela whose face now wore desperation. He rubbed his face. Sure, he'd gone through the same things that she had once before, but telling Nat how he felt about her was probably one of the easiest and pain-free things he'd ever done. Granted, he was already well aware of her feelings for him, but he decided to try and offer encouraging words to Neela regardless.
"If you start to get cold feet and contemplate not telling her, just ask yourself what you fear more, not knowing what she would have said, or the idea that she might say no," Titus posed to her. "They say that you can't win a battle unless you partake in it." That wasn't quite the quote, but she understood what he meant by it and she nodded to him in gratitude. "As for not understanding you, you might just have to tell her in the most blatant way possible. I know that it might not seem very romantic when you think about it now, but when the moment poses itself, it'll definitely be the easiest way to go about doing it."
She hated to admit it, but he was right. When it came to Eliana, usually the simplest and most direct answer was the best way to go about explaining things to her. Neela stood up, using Titus's desk to help prop her up before moving back to the closet to find something to wear. Her choices for a morning jog had been limited by the fact that Eliana was slacking on her laundry duties, leaving Neela only a pair of black gym shorts that had the Beacon emblem on the front right side, and a white compression t-shirt that bore the athletic companies logo on the middle of the collar. She next moved to the bathroom, brushing her teeth quick before heading out for a morning jog to take in some oxygen and let her anxiety let up a bit. She'd shower when she returned.
"Out a bit early this morning, aren't we Ms. Xiao Long?" Glynda asked as Neela nearly plowed her over coming out of the dorms. She stopped, turning back to speak with Ms. Goodwitch before carrying on with her run.
"Is everything okay, Ms. Goodwitch?" Neela asked. "Running into you was completely unintentional. What are you doing here this early? Actually, why are you here at the dorms in general, I think this is the first time I've seen you pay us a visit." As far as Neela could recall for that year and when she'd spent time on the school grounds when she was younger, Glynda rarely paid visits to the dormitories and she wondered if it meant that something serious had gone down. "Did something happen?"
"Something happened last night, but it's really nothing to worry about, Neela," Glynda insisted to her. "There were a couple of first years that decided to break the curfew rule in the forest last night and I just need to find out why they were out there. Nothing more than that and between you and me I think it's quite trivial, but if I'm not thorough, who's to say that everyone won't start breaking the rules?" Neela hid a chuckle from Glynda and nodded in agreement.
"Exactly," Neela agreed. Neela set out, heading directly for the path that followed along the woods because she knew that it provided the lowest amount of traffic for so early on in the day and she needed to keep distractions at a minimum. She wanted to keep her mind clear, she wanted to be completely focused when she took Eliana out to the cave and told her how she'd been feeling. How she thought that Eliana was the most beautiful girl that she'd ever met and that if Eliana wanted it too, they could stay together for the rest of their lives. The way that only Eliana was able to make her forget about her problems, or make her smile when she was having a bad day. She was the last thing on Neela's mind when she fell asleep, and the first thing when she woke up in the morning. Not to mention unspeakable desires, that at this point, were probably better left unsaid.
Neela's jog had turned into more of a sprint than anything, the weight of the world lifted off of her shoulders as she kept herself occupied with the idea that Eliana would say yes, what reason did she have to choose otherwise? It was invigorating, the reassuring words of her friends and family filling her, the thoughts of the Stardust Gang and the White Fang far from her mind as she raced along the school's footpaths and acknowledged the occasional passerby with a wave. Tonight was the night. She didn't need to count the days, minutes, or seconds until summer break began.
Their beginning of the school year. The flight over, their night by the waterfall, all of their moments in Eliana's Cavern, the dance, their fights against Stardust. All of it was about to culminate in an opportunity that might very well become the best night of Neela's life to that point. She made another lap, her body beginning to remind her that she was only Faunus and she slowed her pace back to that of a steady jog, thinking about returning to the dorm before receiving a message from Yang that she read on the run. A reminder that they needed to begin setting up the stage and the chairs, despite the fact that the ceremony wasn't for a few more days.
It really had been a crazy year the more she thought about it. She'd almost died several times, she'd been kidnapped, even though they did turn out to be friendly in the end. She'd held her own against the other students that had been in the top of their classes, held her own against her own classmates, and ended ranked at the top of the first years, something that she couldn't complain about. They stopped a crime syndicate in Mistral that was massacring Faunus and had put dents in Mercury's plans on more than one occasion. At this point all there was left to wonder about was how crazy their second year would be compared to their first… and whether or not she should buy a new swimsuit.
She'd been at it for a few hours, finally taking a break when she received yet another message but this time from Blake, checking in on her to ask why she hadn't replied to Yang's message from before. Her options for endless for the summer, Neela could go anywhere she pleased if she was ambitious, Weiss was always more than happy to help her out with Dust, lien, or transportation, though Neela typically turned it down because she preferred the payoff of hard work. They could spend it on Patch, just Eliana, Neela, and the family enjoying camping under the stars and whatever crazy schemes that Eliana hatched up that would get the two of them and Shadow into some kind of trouble. Maybe they could pay a visit to her grandparents in Menagerie. If there was anything that she knew Eliana loved more, it was history.
She took a deep breath, thinking of how she wanted to spend the rest of the day until that evening rolled around when her stomach made up her mind for her. She hadn't eaten yet, her stomach turning as she made her way back to the dorms for a pre-breakfast shower. She opened the door to find Titus and Ilia on their way out, having what sounded like an argument but she couldn't be entirely sure.
"All I'm saying is that if we all just do it tonight quickly, together, that we can have the entire thing finished in no time flat," Titus tried to explain to Ilia who was rolling her eyes and pretending to plug her ears. "Seriously?"
"I know, you've told me that at least twenty times this morning, Titus, but I made these plans for my date with Vin tonight a few weeks ago and I can't cancel," Ilia reminded him rubbing her forehead as she smiled at Neela before they left the room.
"I'm well aware of your schedule Ilia, you have nothing going on this Wednesday night," Titus pointed out with an air of cockiness.
"You can't get reservations to the nicest restaurant in all of Vale in that short of an amount of time!" Ilia informed him, frustrated. Neela closed the door and left them to their arguing in the hallway. She turned back around to face the room, finding Eliana coming out of the bathroom wrapped in nothing more than a towel with a toothbrush hanging out of her mouth as she stared out the bedroom window at something before waving. There was something about Eliana in this state that Neela couldn't quite place her finger on, but Neela was even more tempted to let the cat out of the bag early.
"Where were you so early this morning?" Eliana questioned through the toothbrush hindering her speech as she cocked her hip and just barely caught the top of her towel before losing it. "Meeting with a secret lover perhaps?" Eliana gasped and turned around to face Neela. "If you were, you could totally tell me and give me all of the juicy details, that's what I'm here for! I don't have to tell Titus or Ilia if you don't want. Or Blake or Yang." Neela chuckled shaking her head before looking out the window at Cobalt who was staring.
"Were you waving at Cobalt?" Neela questioned as she closed the blinds.
"You're avoiding my question, but yes," Eliana told Neela before returning to the bathroom to finish her morning routine.
"Maybe avoid standing at the window when you're not wearing anything," Neela suggested as she moved to the doorway to talk to Eliana, smiling at her as Eliana gargled and spit, checking her gums in the mirror before smirking at Neela's reflection.
"I had a towel on but hey," Eliana said walking over to her as her towel fell off. Neela's face turned bright red and she swallowed hard as she took a step back, running into the corner of her desk before Eliana pushed herself against Neela and smelled her. Why is she doing this? Is this just another one of my fantasies? It has to be, right? "You know, that grin on your face paired with you being all flush and sweaty… Yeah, it has to be a secret lover."
"I was out running this morning," Neela stammered as she separated herself from Eliana. "You might want to put on some clothes, Elli." Eliana sighed as she stepped back into the bathroom and began dressing.
"Fine have it your way," Eliana groaned. Neela sat on her bed, waiting for Eliana to finish covering herself as she glanced into the closet. Did she wear her usual for the day? Maybe something special, something a little on the low cut side so that Eliana would have a better look at the girls? Should she come on strong with Eliana, or did she want to try and romance the pants off of her, literally? Eliana, I know that you've always thought of me as a sister, and I can easily say the same thing about you… but… I want more. I want us to go a step further. I think… I think we should be a couple! You and me! Neeliana! Neeliana? Who came up with that anyway? "The bathroom is yours now if you were wanting to use it."
"I was," Neela replied with a smile as she moved to the bathroom and began undressing. She turned to find Eliana in the doorway, watching her and giggling as Neela covered herself and blushed. "Eliana, can't you wait outside for a moment!"
"Aw come on, you're not that embarrassed, are you?" Eliana inquired. "We've always been close. It's no big deal."
"Maybe I think it's a big deal!" Neela scolded. Eliana laughed and left the room, humoring her.
"You've been acting so strange about either of us seeing the other naked all year," Eliana noted. "You even got that nosebleed at the beginning of the school year when I used the locker room shower." Neela shook her head, stepping into the shower before the cold water hit her body, causing her to cringe as she stifled a whimper, adjusting the temperature quickly. "If it makes you feel better, you've got a really cute figure, but my breasts are still bigger."
"If you say so," Neela called back with a laugh. "You can come back in now."
"We can compare if you want," Eliana suggested sticking her tongue out.
"I'll take your word for it," Neela insisted as she washed her hair. Eliana really had no idea, but she'd never really spelled it out for her, had she? She'd implied it, and even flirted with the girl a few times, but Eliana knew Neela better than her committing, and always called her bluff. Soon enough they would… maybe… First Neela would have to tell Eliana… and then find some time away from the rest of the team and her parents.
"I still can't believe that we finished at the top of our class for the year," Eliana said making small talk with her best friend. "You think we'll be able to keep that up next year until the festival at least?" Neela laughed, running her fingers through her hair and scrubbing in the shampoo.
"You and that festival," Neela noted. "You really couldn't be more excited about anything, could you?"
"I could be," Eliana spat playfully. She hugged her body. "Just think about it though. People all over the kingdoms will watch the Vytal Fest, we'll be like celebrities. I mean, the rest of us anyways, lots of people know you from capturing Mercury and winning those archery tournaments a few years ago. Plus, the Vytal Fest is when things got nuts for Team RWBY!" Neela laughed.
"You won't let me forget," Neela reminded her. "Plus I'm not in it for this strange allusion of getting famous that you've come up with for me. Out of everybody, I think that you're my biggest fan, Elli." Eliana blushed at Neela pointing it out, glad for the moment that Neela couldn't see her. She couldn't help but think the world of Neela. Neela was the most amazing person that she knew and was always there when she needed her. She scoffed.
"So what if I am?" Eliana asked. There was an unexpected and awkward silence that settled in as Neela finished washing her body, poking her head out and smiling at Eliana who reflected her expression, reminding Neela of her goal for the day.
"Any chance that you can hand me a towel," Neela requested. Eliana folded her arms and rolled her eyes.
"I mean, I could give you a towel… or you could come and get it yourself," Eliana informed her.
"No," Neela said flatly.
"Just one more glimpse at the girls and I'm done, I swear," Eliana insisted with an evil gleam in her eye, making groping motions with her fingers.
"Just get the towel!" Neela demanded. Eliana waved her off.
"Fine, fine," Eliana groaned as she went and retrieved one from the shelf and threw it at Neela. Neela dried herself off, leaving Eliana patiently waiting as she repeated how she hoped the night would go over and over again in her head. What had Eliana said that gave her such a boost of confidence? Why couldn't she remember? "So, what are we up to today?" Eliana's question freed her from her over concentration and she thought it over.
"I was thinking that we could have the day together, just the two of us," Neela offered.
"Really?!" Eliana asked her excitedly.
"I mean, if you want to," Neela said. Eliana leapt up and down.
"Are you kidding?! Of course, I do!" Eliana replied energetically. "And I've got some ideas on how we can spend it!" Neela laughed as Eliana beamed at her.
"Can I get dressed first?" Neela asked. Eliana nodded and moved out of the bathroom's doorway.
"Yeah sure," she agreed. Her stomach growled. "Hey, have you had anything to eat yet this morning?"
"No. You neither?" Neela called out to Eliana from the closet.
"How about we get breakfast first?" Eliana inquired. Neela chuckled.
"Good idea," Neela replied.
"It seems to be like we were put in charge of all of the work," Titus pointed out as he and Ilia sat down across from Team CBLT in the cafeteria. "What exactly are you guys doing to help out with the graduation ceremony?"
"Plenty, actually," Tawney bit off before taking a large bite of her eggs and chewing angrily.
"Anyone care to elaborate?" Ilia asked taking a sip of her orange juice.
"You'll have to forgive her," Bái explained. "Both her and Cobalt were yelled at this morning by Glynda for sneaking out into the woods last night."
"It's all fun and games until Glynda finds out," Cobalt sighed.
"Rules are rules," Titus pointed out. "The forest curfew rule is laid out pretty blatantly in the Beacon Handbook that we were provided on the first day of school."
"I get this funny feeling that he's actually memorized the thing," Cobalt noted.
"On the first day," Ilia confirmed.
"There's nothing wrong with wanting to know the code and rules by which the school runs," Titus defended. "That's the difference between the two of you getting in trouble for being in the woods, and me sleeping peacefully in the dorms without the worry of being yelled at by the Headmistress in the morning." Ilia looked at him and shook her head.
"Anyway, what are you guys in charge of for the ceremony?" Ilia pried again.
"Well, A/V club over here told Glynda that he'd be more than happy to set up the audio, video, and the works as far as technological nonsense is concerned. Then we have to be there just like you guys until the end of the ceremony to pack it all up. Oh, and Bái was chosen to stand up on the stage with Glynda and hand her the diplomas or something like that," Tawney grumbled.
"How much trouble did you guys get into?" Neela asked joining them. Eliana sat next to her and hid her mouth from the others as she whispered in Neela's ear.
"You said we'd have the day alone together," Eliana reminded her.
"After breakfast," Neela replied. Eliana took a bite of her toast and shrugged.
"Fine," Eliana agreed.
"Something going on with the two of you?" Lykos asked with a smirk.
"We're having a girls day," Eliana offered perking up.
"Like a date?" Ilia asked raising an eyebrow. Neela blushed nervously, waiting for Eliana to answer for the both of them.
"We have to clean all of the bathrooms on campus for the next week," Tawney groaned with a delayed answer. "Just because we were in the woods later than we were supposed to be. It's stupid! We didn't even run into a single Grimm out there, so I don't see what the big deal is."
"Rules are in place for a reason," Titus pointed out.
"Something tells me that she doesn't want to hear it right now," Neela noted.
"Not in particular," Tawney agreed.
"So what does girls day entail?" Ilia questioned.
"I can't tell you that," Eliana replied with a wink. "It's a secret."
"Oh is it?" Cobalt asked deviously.
"Not that kind of a secret," Neela scolded. Cobalt shrugged with a knowing grin.
"I can dream," he informed her.
"Well I hope that the two of you have fun," Lykos replied. Ilia reached around Titus and tapped Neela on the shoulder.
"Can I have a moment?" Ilia asked.
"Ilia and I are going to run to the bathroom quickly," Neela said. Eliana attempted to stand.
"I'll come too," she insisted. Ilia grabbed Titus's shoulder, coughing hard as she stood and Titus nodded at her.
"Hey Elli, I was wanting to ask you something about your guns because I've always wondered how they work," Titus spat out before she could throw her legs over the seat. She looked at him with wondering eyes, sitting down once again and leaning towards him.
"Sure, what's up?" She asked. Ilia slapped him hard on the shoulder as she and Neela left the lunchroom, slamming her against the wall as soon as they got around the corner.
"Good morning to you too," Neela grunted as her back throbbed from the impact.
"Titus told me you're going to tell Eliana today!" Ilia exclaimed ecstatically. Neela rubbed the back of her neck.
"That's the plan," Neela admitted sheepishly. Ilia grabbed her by the shoulders.
"Hey, what's this doubtful undertone that I'm hearing?" Ilia questioned. "You are Neela Xiao Long! You're second to none in Eliana's book! You're her world, and if that's not a good enough reason to take a stab at this, then I don't know what is! I've winged it with tons of guys, never feeling as strongly as you do about Eliana right now. It's a good start! Run with it! Make her yours, okay?" Neela smiled and nodded.
"Right!" Neela agreed. Ilia smiled.
"Good!" Ilia assured her. "It's about time you spit it out, Titus and I have been getting tired of waiting!"
"It can't be as bad as the wait has been on me," Neela joked. Ilia laughed.
"Yeah, I guess you're right," Ilia agreed. She looked through the doors with Neela who watched Eliana. "She really does mean the world to you, doesn't she?" Neela felt that familiar warmth run through her veins as she could tell that Eliana was laughing about something, giving Titus a playful shove as she looked back at the doors, waiting for Neela to return.
"Isn't that the same feeling you get with Vin?" Neela asked her. Ilia rubbed her arms.
"I like Vin a lot, don't get me wrong," Ilia admitted looking at the ground and avoiding eye contact with Neela. "But that's not a feeling that I can find in people easily. I had a pretty bad childhood, and trusting any one person that much seems like a mistake to me. I know it shouldn't, I know that love should be carefree and easy to come by, and I think that's the mentality that you should have with Eliana and need to have, but it's just not the way I'm wired. You and Elli are going to be great together, trust me." Ilia struggled to find anything comforting to follow up with. "I'm sorry if that put a damper on your mood."
"It's fine," Neela assured her before hugging her. The gesture shocked Ilia, as it always did, but from Neela it was comforting. "I know someday you'll find it."
"Thanks," Ilia replied trying not to get emotional. "Now get out of here before I start crying or something stupid like that." Neela nodded and laughed opening the doors to the lunchroom.
"No problem," Neela told her. They returned to the table, taking their respective seats as Eliana moved out of the way so Neela could have her space back.
"You two weren't gone for very long," Eliana noted.
"We just had to powder our noses," Ilia offered. Cobalt looked around the table.
"That's code for something, right?" Cobalt asked. He looked at Tawney. "Right?"
"This is all your fault," Tawney accused him.
"What?" He questioned, taken aback.
"If you just would have helped me out when she tried to corner me here," Tawney groaned. "Or even back at the cafe…"
"Like you would have listened," he pointed out.
"Maybe if you would have tried telling me, I would have!" She shouted.
"Are you really that worked up about the bathrooms? You seemed to be the happiest you've been in months last night when you saw the look of defeat on Coco's face!" Cobalt reminded her.
"I didn't think it was going to end like this!" Tawney defended.
"It's for one week," Cobalt moaned.
"That's too long!" She argued.
"I think Eliana and I are going to duck out since this conversation has completely lost my interest," Neela said as she nudged Eliana and she nodded in agreement, swallowing hard the food that was in her mouth before chasing it down with milk.
"Have a good day everybody!" Eliana called back as she left with Neela and the group sat in silence for a long moment.
"Can we talk about it now?" Bái asked.
"About what?" Titus asked. Ilia looked away and whistled. "No… No… Ilia…"
"That was exciting news!" Ilia blurted out. "Did you really think that you could tell me something like that and I'd keep it to myself?"
"How was my acting?" Tawney asked pulling out her earplugs.
"All of you are unbelievable," Titus scolded them in disgust.
"To be fair, we really do have to clean the bathrooms," Cobalt replied. "And you kind of laid it on a little thick with the brooding, but it was still believable."
"I'm going to guess she hasn't told her yet," Lykos noted.
"What makes you say that?" Bái asked.
"I mean, I know that she hasn't yet, but how did you come to that conclusion?" Ilia wondered.
"She would have had this glow to her," Lykos pointed out. "One similar to Bái's when we first started dating."
"Yeah, she wouldn't stop smiling," Cobalt added.
"So she's finally going to tell her?" Tawney asked. Titus nodded. Tawney bit her lip. "Damn."
"Still butthurt about Eliana turning you down?" Cobalt inquired. Tawney scoffed.
"No," She insisted. Tawney took a drink of her milk. "I just… I just want to beat her one time at anything, you know?"
"Can't exactly relate," Ilia replied.
"I can," Titus told her. "My friend Nat and I used to compete at everything. She beat me at everything with the exception of being made Lieutenant-General first. I hold it over her head all the time…" Titus lost his thought process, staring off into space.
"You alright there, Gargoyle?" Ilia asked. He snapped out of it, looking at her for a long moment letting her words set in before nodding.
"Yeah, I'm fine," he insisted. He looked back at Tawney. "Trust me, one of these times you'll beat her at something."
"I hope so," Tawney said. She looked at Ilia. "So when is she planning on doing it?"
"Knowing Neela, she has a time planned but will be looking for an excuse out since she gets cold feet quite often," Ilia told them. "Nobody call or text either of them today." They all nodded. "I'll let Blake and Yang know too."
"She seemed determined this morning," Titus recalled. Ilia nodded.
"I know she wants to," Ilia replied. "And really, she needs to. It'll be good for both of them."
Neela's planning to confess, and she seems determined to go through with it. Next week, Chapter 124 - The Call!
