Chapter 2: Brothers.
When my mom moved back to Tree Hill she started a partnership with her childhood best friend Karen to own half of her Cafe. I guess she wanted to make her mark on this town and Karen was the one to help her as she lived here her whole life. We spent most, if not all, our days there, especially to eat. However, with Karen, comes this pouty, loner son of hers, Lucas who constantly had a basketball in one hand and a book in the other. Although, come to think of it, he was smart and weirdly hot. Maybe we had more in common then I first considered.
"Honey, I know we've only been here 2 weeks but I'd like to think you know where our house is by now." The sarcastic greeting hit me as soon as I sat at the counter.
"And I'd like to think you know how to move your face." Needless to say the botox joke didn't amuse her. "Sorry.."
She brushed off the comment and put down food infront of me. "You going to the basketball game tonight?" I frowned taking a bite.
"Mom, I may be hot but I am not a cheerleader."
"You don't have to be a cheerleader to go to a game, Katie." I shrugged as she continued. "You know, me and Karen were cheerleaders. Maybe you should consider it seeing as you have no activities to put on your college application."
"Dad can pay for college." The mention of my dad always made my mother uneasy especially when it came to his money, she was stubborn like that.
"Absolutely not. You are working hard to get a schloarship." I rolled my eyes and carried on eating.
"I know Lucas is going to the game." Karen interrupted.
"Yeah, what is the deal with that anyway? Shouldn't he be playing on the team?" Apparently I keep putting my foot in it today, by the look on Karen's face. She was definitely hiding something. How can a teenage boy love basketball so much but not be on the undefeated team? Maybe I could find out from the guy himself instead. "Fine, I'll go with him." I sighed. And with that, Lucas appeared.
"Ready?" He asked. I looked at him admiring his usual grey hoodie and jeans look he's sporting.
"Sure. Go Ravens!" I sarcastically cheered to Mom and Karen as we left.
Basketball in Tree Hill was notorious. Everyone lived for a new season. The whole town was painted in blue and white. Me? I never got the hype. Sure, watching tall, sexy athletes sweat for 90 minutes was appealing but that's where the line ends. We turned up in Lucas' banged up truck to school. Whitey Durham's Field House was staring back at me. Whitey was the coach that had been there from the dawn of time but yet, apparently couldn't have a decent enough team to win a State Championship. Okay, so I read a few things about this place before I joined. Knowledge is power.
As I walked in the place with Lucas, I could feel the tension, I could feel the atmosphere, I could feel ... Nathan?
"Hey sexy." He smirked as he smacked my ass. Okay, maybe this game wasn't going to be all bad. I smiled seductively at him as he grinned running past me to dunk the ball.
"Was that supposed to impress me?" I played along.
"Admit it, you were" He winked. Guess he was right. But then out of nowhere Lucas squared up to him. Nathan's smile soon turned upside down. "You better step away" He shoved Lucas. His face now mirrored the one he wore this morning facing his Dad.
"Hey!" I shouted trying to pull them apart. "Lucas!" I hissed.
"Take your puppy away, Katie." Nathan spat turning away. Is it possible to feel humiliated more than once in a day? Especially by two basically strangers.
"What is your problem?!" I pushed Lucas.
"He's a jackass." Lucas was still staring at Nathan.
"So?!" I was watching his anger then it clicked. "It's because of him you're not on the team isn't it?" I scoffed at how pathetic it sounded.
"What?" I finally got Lucas' attention. He stared confused but I knew I was right.
"You heard me."
"How do you know him?" Lucas changed the subject starting to walk away.
"Like everyone else does in this gym, Lucas." I lied trying to catch up with him.
"He has a girlfriend." He carried on mumbling.
"Okay, cool?" It wasn't cool, I now had competition for Nathan. I shrugged that out of my head for now. "So, that's why you hate him so much? He's not single?"
Lucas stopped abruptly causing me to almost bump into him. He turned. "What's my last name Katie?"
I frowned quizzed. "Is that a trick question? What's that got to do with-"
"Scott." He revealed. "I'm Lucas Scott." He sarcastically put his hand out to shake.
"So what? You have the same last name. It's not a crime?" That wasn't it. I guessed again. "So what you're like cousins or something?"
Lucas stared at me shaking his head and reluctantly informed me on the news that probably the whole contents of this gym already knew about them.
"Brothers." He spat and walked away onto the bleachers. I looked back at Nathan who was warming up putting his size 14's to good use.
All of a sudden, this whole situation just got interesting.
As predicted the Tree Hill Ravens maintain their undefeated streak and of course Nathan Scott was solely responsible. That boy knows how to move. I stayed sat in the bleachers alone as the gym cleared out and Lucas ran off to find his best friend Haley. The cheerleaders were packing up and I couldn't help but wonder who Nathan's victim was. And just like that on cue, Nathan walked out of the locker room.
"Great game" He definitely wasn't expecting me to still be here by his mini startle. Nathan grinned and eyed me up and down.
"Great view" He responded. I can't help but notice how fresh he looked.
"Nice. Real smooth" I jumped down the stairs to be on his level. Who am I kidding, he's basically a foot taller than me.
"Thought you'd be with Lucas" He snubbed. He was clearly after a reaction.
"Oh, so he can tell me all about your brotherly love? So tell me, is he really the 'big' brother or do I have to find that out for myself?" That wiped the smirk off his face. Oops.
"He ain't got nothing on me" He scowled bouncing a ball and making a free throw.
"Is that so?" I watched as he inevitably made the basket. Well if he was going to make snidey comments now it was my turn. "So which one of those cheerleaders is your girlfriend?"
He stopped mid throw and glared at me. "What?"
Busted.
"Relax. You're captain of the basketball team. By law, you have to date a cheerleader." I snatched the ball out of his hands. He still said nothing.
"Look, I don't care, and you sure as hell don't care about her feelings either"
Finally a smile grew across his face.
"Is it possible to have a female version of me?" He creeped closer to me.
"Oh, you're definitely not lucky enough to be like me." By this time our faces were inches apart. Our evident sexual tension was prematurely interrupted.
"Nathan let's go!" We both looked down and shared a glance from where the voice was coming from. A moody looking, fake blonde with big curls glared over with her arms crossed. That is my competition? Pfft.
"Go on, cheerleader awaits." I got back Nathan's attention who clearly didn't want to leave my sight.
"Coming to the party?" He invited.
"In the house your dad caught us having sex, right?" The twinkle in his eye anytime I made sexual jokes never gets old. He can't resist how shameless I am. Nathan Scott was besotted by me and I thrived on it. "I'll think about it."
"NATHAN!" The desperate cheerleader called again. That was his cue to leave, not before one last look of what he could have vs what he does have.
I finally left the gym to find Lucas with, who could only be, Haley, I never see him speaking to anyone else plus she works for our Moms. By the look on her face, she's clearly not one of my biggest fans but she knows to keep her job she needs to be on my side.
"Hey Hales, no work tonight?" I smiled fakely.
"Er, yeah I just finished actually. Me and Luke were -" Before she had chance to make plans I butted in.
"Lucas we're going to the party." As expected he was not convinced, neither was Haley.
"Like he would go to Nathan's party." Haley scoffed but i was persistent.
"C'mon Luke, if you're with me my Mom won't be suspicious."
"Does she need to be?" Lucas confronted.
"No.." I said unconvincingly. "But she thinks you're great ... or boring or... whatever it is. Please? Even Little Haley can come." I pouted like a 6 year old until he caved.
"Fine. But only for a bit." That was all I needed. Noone goes to a party alone and I wanted to see just how bad the friction between the Scott brothers really was.
We pulled up outside the house that I was supposed to not recognise and it was just as obnoxious as I remembered. But that's what I loved. I went to get out of the car when Lucas grabbed my arm.
"Hey." He stopped me. "Look, Marianne (my mom) trusts me with you. So stay away from Nathan."
I glared at him. "You can't tell me what to do Lucas. I'm not your property." He stopped me again from leaving.
"I mean it. He's no good for you." Careful Luke, your sterness might be making you sexier. But I wasn't giving in.
"Look, I'm not going to jeopardise my fun because you're scared of your little brother." I shrugged his grip and finally got out of the car.
It's Party Time.
