"Neela!" Raven shouted as she turned quickly, stumbling out of the portal and raising her sword which Neela met with her own. Neela breathed heavily, grunting in pain as she pushed back against Raven but was easily knocked off of her feet. "You think that I didn't know that you were injured last night?"
"I need to do this for Eliana," Neela reminded her.
"I understand that you are head over heels for this girl, but getting yourself killed isn't going to be helpful to her in any way," Raven informed her. "You think that saving her mom will make her feel worse about what she did? Or would it keep her from doing it again? To what lengths would you go to save either of your mothers?" Neela's eyes filled with tears.
"Please, let me help," Neela begged.
"I cannot…" Raven began before diving on top of her. Several militarized vehicles rolled by and Raven watched them leave, spotting Athena in the window of the last vehicle that passed by. She debated following them for a long moment, shaking her head and leaping up as she helped Neela to her feet. "Stay close!"
"Yes…" Neela replied, hanging her head with a weak nod.
"It's not that I don't want you to help," Raven explained as she scanned the area. "I just…" Raven recalled Summer smiling at her and she pushed the memory away. "I've lost enough people that are close to me, alright?" Neela looked at Raven, acknowledging the sudden confession but acting as though it hadn't happened, knowing that Raven often struggled with her feelings.
"So what's the plan?" Neela asked.
"I'll take on anyone who looks like they'll be more than a quick takedown," Raven noted. "I'll leave stragglers to you." Neela nodded, taking up the rear as they slowly made their way through the woods, but the rain began to fall slowly.
"Supposed to be a pretty bad one today," Neela mentioned to her.
"Perfect," Raven said. "We can use it to our advantage. You and them might be able to see better in the dark, but the rain is going to make things interesting. It'll at least cover the sound of us coming, and I doubt they anticipated anyone finding where they were this soon." Raven was a better mentor than she deserved and as the rain cooled her, she thought about her injury. This probably wasn't the best idea the more that she thought about it, but if something had happened to Violet and she couldn't say that she at least tried to help, she wasn't sure she would have been able to forgive herself.
"There it is!" Neela exclaimed pointing it out, the two of them continuing to move closer as they stayed close to the trees. Neela tripped over a root, landing next to Raven in the mud and seething in pain as something jabbed into her side. Raven quickly lifted her, planting her against the tree as she spotted two men scanning the perimeter.
"Are you okay?" Raven asked. Neela nodded. Raven sighed as she stared at the men. "I might as well be babysitting."
"You know how good I am," Neela reassured her.
"I know how good you can be when you aren't in pain," Raven corrected. "Stay here for a moment and I'll take care of them."
"Sure," Neela agreed, nodding. Raven gripped her hilt, eying them up for a long moment before moving in with incredible speed that impressed Neela who watched from the safety of her hiding spot. She sliced through the first man with ease, blood spraying everywhere as Neela admired the show of power in both power and amazement, everything seeming to move in slow motion, including the rain. Raven wore a grin as the second man turned in horror with no time to react, slowly turning to aim his gun as the blood of his fallen comrade spayed out everywhere, the body falling onto the ground. Raven stopped herself abruptly, her body turning swiftly, cutting through the gun like butter before resheathing her blade and removing it coated in ice. She swung hard, a wave of ice Dust crashing through the air and into the Faunus as he was thrown back from the force and frozen to the wall.
"Where's the human woman?" Raven asked, sheathing her blade and approaching him as if nothing had happened.
"Go to hell," He spat at her. "Once Athena is finished…" He was silenced, his words replaced with gargling and wide eyes as he looked down to find that he'd been impaled, and Raven made absolutely sure that his lung had been punctured. He gasped, trying to grip the blade but the life quickly left his body and he fell limp. Raven waved for Neela, the girl making her way over, now drenched as the rain began to fall more heavily, the noise loud in her ears as she wanted to call out and ask Raven what she'd found out, but she knew that it was pointless.
"Well!?" Neela yelled standing beside Raven.
"He wasn't cooperating, so I made an example of him for if Athena comes back," Raven shouted before kicking the door in to let them both enter the cabin. Lightning cracked outside, startling Neela as she did her best to set the door back in the opening as Raven began examining the room. "Was she here?"
"Huh?" Neela asked.
"Was she here?" Raven asked. "Don't you have heightened senses or something?" Neela sighed.
"Just sight," she explained. "I'm not a dog." Raven noted a decent amount of dried blood on the floor, wondering if it could be Violets. "They sure left in a hurry, are we sure that Violet wasn't with them?"
"No reason for her to be," Raven noted. "There's no way that Athena thought we'd find this place as soon as we did."
"There's also not necessarily any reason to believe Violet was here or is here," Neela added. "Athena said that she'd show us Violet, but she must have known that Coco would decline just so she could try and change the subject. It wasn't difficult to follow along with their mind games." Raven moved her hand in a mocking manner.
"'It wasn't difficult to follow along…' You're starting to sound like me," Raven chuckled.
"Don't let Yang know that," Neela instructed as she spotted the blood that Raven had taken notice of.
"So if we don't think that Athena took her with, and we're sure that she is here, then where is she?" Raven asked. Raven noted the flames in the fireplace before looking back at Neela. "I'm out of ideas. This is easily the smallest livable building I've ever been in, and considering all the doors are open and there are clearly no stairs, I'm thinking we might have been tricked into thinking she's here." There had to be more, there had to be something that could lead them to Violet!
"Wait," Neela told her, "There's one last thing that we can try."
"What's that?" Raven asked. Neela stood in the middle of the room, closing her eyes as she activated her semblance, focusing hard on the area around her. There were more of the White Fang there… below them?
"There's something below us," Neela replied, opening her eyes. "At least one room with three of them in it. Can you teleport us in?"
"How deep is it?" Raven inquired. Neela chuckled nervously as she rubbed her neck.
"Not sure," Neela shrugged. "Things are kind of fuzzy for me to make out the details on when they aren't in the same room or something is separating them from me." Raven let out a frustrated sigh as she moved Neela out of the center of the room.
"Stand back," Raven said. "We'll try the less dangerous option first." She coated her blade in gravity Dust, slamming it into the floor and leaping back as the shockwave destroyed the wooden boards, the weak structure beneath also giving way as the two of them fell into the cave in. Raven landed on the hilt of her sword, gripping it and flipping back as she deflected several bullets before charging in, Neela was able to soften her fall by slowing her descent with her grappling hook. "Nice work, Neela." Raven tore through the first two men before the third greeted her with a weapon that appeared to be an electric cattle prod.
"Need help?" Neela asked.
"I've got this one," Raven replied grunting, matching him blow for blow before kicking him back, giving her a moment to change her blade. She met his attack again, turning the end of his staff to stone, and watching the sudden weight change betray him as she ran him through and led him to the wall. "Maybe you'll answer me, unlike the last guy. Where's the human woman? I'm convinced that she's here."
"I'm as good as dead anyway whether I tell you or not, Athena would have me killed," the Faunus explained.
"Well, I wouldn't want her to waste the time or effort," Raven said. She removed her blade, removing his torso from his legs, Neela watching in slight horror as Raven looked back at her. "This can't be the worst thing you've ever seen."
"It's up there," she replied. "Let's just find Violet and get out of here." Raven nodded in agreement, forcing the door open and letting them in.
"Two corridors," Raven noted. "I guess we'll cover one and come back."
"Or we could split up," Neela suggested.
"Out of the question," Raven replied.
"We'd cover more ground that way, and so far I could have taken any of these goons," Neela admitted.
"I will not agree to splitting up," Raven sternly asserted. "Your mothers are going to kill me as it is for not sending you back immediately. If you die, that's it! There's no redemption for me and you'd be dead! Is that really what you want?" Neela stepped to the right side of the hallway and looked down the corridor that cornered around to the right.
"We need to find her," Neela whined with desperation. Without warning a large metal door slammed shut between the two of them as an alarm loudly blared.
*Intruder Alert. Top Floor. Intruder Alert. Top Floor.*
"No!" Raven shouted, slicing at the door but with no luck. "Neela! Stay there! I'll find a way to get to you!"
"We need to look for Violet," Neela said before taking off.
"Neela!" Raven shouted at her. She coated her blade in gravity Dust and tried the door again. It refused to budge. "Dammit!"
"Dammit!" Raven's shout rang after Neela as she jogged down the hall and stopped when she reached the corner, peering around to spot two women that were coming her way. She stepped back, grabbing a flashbang arrow and nocking it, but struggling to pull it back with her chest pain. She tried again, taking a few more steps back as she used her semblance to note they were coming dangerously close. She gave up, tearing the tip off of the arrow and throwing it with as much force as she could, turning away as the light and sound rendered the two unsuspecting guards useless.
"Over here!" One of them shouted. Neela ran past them, not giving them a second thought as she slipped into the first room on her right and closed the door behind her. She took a moment to breathe, upset at herself that her body was hurting so badly. It should be fine, it should be! It had to be, she needed to keep going, she needed to save Violet… and to stay alive. She glanced around the room for anything that might help her, shocked to find a chair similar to one that might be used at a dentist's office in the middle of the room. It didn't bode well. She tried to deny it, but she had a good idea of what they planned on doing in the facility. She stood up, holding her side as she spotted a scalpel and gripped it, deciding to take it with her as she sheathed her sword.
If she needed to she could defend herself with her sword, the pain wasn't so bad that she couldn't swing it, it had more to do with twisting her body. Slowly she opened the door, peering out at the two women who she'd blinded still stumbling about, a third member wearing a mask tried to help them.
"What happened?" He asked.
"They used a flashbang as they rounded the corner, I'm not even really sure what they look like," they explained as Neela crept out the other way and advanced down the hall to a set of stairs that were blocked off by another one of the doors. This was it? This was as far as she was going to get? One of them back there had to have some kind of access card, Neela recognized the device on the wall as being similar to the one installed at the school that allowed staff in after hours. She had no choice but to face them. She hoped Raven was going to find Violet first and come back for her, but if Neela just stayed put she'd also be as good as caught.
She slowly made her way to them, spotting the badge hanging by a lanyard on his neck, the target was close enough, but it would boil down to being a matter of speed. She took a deep breath and gritted her teeth. She took off with as much speed as she could muster, watching as he turned to fire but had trouble finding the trigger. These people clearly weren't fighters but Faunus that had been coerced into working for Athena out of fear. She reached the man in time, stabbing him in the side with the scalpel and watching his face twist in agony. She ripped off the ID, turning quickly and removing the blade as she strong-armed the gun away from him.
"Stop!" He yelled. Neela frantically attempted to open the door, the device having issues reading the card as she looked back to see them coming close.
"Just work already!" Neela yelled. It finally took, the light turning green as the door slid open and Neela swiftly closed it from the other side, dropping the gun, watching it clatter down the steps. It would be of no use to her, she didn't want to kill these people and her aim with a firearm was something else entirely compared to her bow and arrow. She should have taken more pointers from Eliana. She needed to find Violet. She kept moving. She checked her scroll quickly, noting that she had no service to speak of, no way to contact Raven to let her know what was happening, no way to let her parents know that she was okay. Her situation was only getting worse.
"They were on the first floor!" Someone yelled from the other end of the hallway, they had no line of sight thanks to the curved nature of the hallway and once again Neela slipped into the closest room, slipping around the corner as a few more of them passed by. She used her semblance. There only seemed to be more of them the further they went down, and she was yet to figure out where Violet was. She started losing her nerve, her hands trembling as she barely managed to keep hold of the doctor's instrument in her hand. She couldn't handle it, could she? She had signed her own death certificate…
You're amazing, Neela!
You're a natural!
You need to focus more on your next move!
Make your tools work for you!
I can do this. Neela steadied her breathing, she couldn't just accept her fate. She needed to at least die trying! She nodded, deciding to leave once the current patrol exited her hallway. She jogged with all the speed she could muster while staying silent, using her semblance as she moved which put a strain on her Aura, but she could work through it. She shrugged it off, reaching the next set of stairs to find that it was open, heading down into the final floor, the majority of her resistance had disappeared, now on the opposite side of the wall, Raven clearly being seen as the more dangerous of the two of them.
She was sure that Raven was desperate to get to her, and the help was inadvertent, but it was appreciated nonetheless. That's when Neela spotted a large figure looming over someone at the end of the hall who seemed to be sitting. That had to be her! Neela had reached her. Violet was alive and it hadn't even been as difficult as she expected. She approached the door, peering in and preparing to open it before Irving appeared from thin air, slamming himself against the glass, stripping her with his eyes. Was this the man?!
"And who might you be?" He asked, licking his lips. He was a freak, there was no doubt about that, the man had an air of creepiness that exuded from every mannerism.
"Violet!" Neela shouted.
"Neela?" Violet called back. Irving glanced back at his captive before looking at Neela once more.
"Neela, is it?" He asked. "Would you care to join us? Athena said that no one was going to show up, so I wasn't expecting company, but someone as beautiful as yourself should be let in, I can start fixing you right away! Salem would be delighted with me!"
"I'm not here to fill your twisted fantasy," Neela told him. He frowned.
"But you'd be perfect and I'm losing my mind in here," he explained to her.
"Go, Neela!" Violet pleaded. "I don't want you getting hurt!" Neela was shocked. Was this man so tough that Violet didn't think she could take him down?
"I can't leave you here, Violet," Neela informed her. "I'm going to get you out."
"Then I'll have two to work with," Irving gasped in delight. "That would be perfect!"
"Eliana needs you," Violet spoke, stopping Neela as she moved to open the door. "I'll be fine for a bit longer, send someone to help."
"No!" Irving shouted, moving to her and grabbing her by the neck, sliding the chair back until her head met the wall. "If she leaves, we begin now!"
"Violet!" Neela yelled opening the door. "Here I am, you brute!"
"Yes…" He seethed turning quickly and becoming invisible.
"Run!" Violet yelled to Neela. She used her semblance, it shouldn't be any problem to take…
Where… where is he?
"You're mine!" He shouted. Neela spun in time to meet his blades, trying to leap back but nearly hitting the ground from the worsening pain in her ribs. Her aura was at its limit. Could she only see people that were visible to the human eye? She knew that her semblance had limitations, but she never expected not to be able to see him once he used his. She slid back as his blades crashed on her sword, placing her inches from the wall behind her as she glanced at Violet. She looked to be okay. "They sent a child to stop me? One of Remnant's greatest of all time had a hard time taking me down, and now they send a scared little girl. Interesting!"
"You need to get out now!" Violet urged.
"I can't… I can't leave without you!" Neela replied tears filling her eyes.
"It'll be over soon enough," Irving promised as he came closer and swung again, their weapons clashing. "As soon as you stop resisting." He snatched her sword away with his hook blades, tossing it away behind him before planting her against the wall and breathing on her face. "Such beauty… and I can make it even better." Neela's eyes searched his as her mind noted the fact that her weapon had never hit the ground.
"Neela," came a voice from the door that forced Irving to turn around. Raven stood in the door, covered in blood splatters, parts of her top and sleeves tattered as she wiped the corner of her mouth and held Neela's sword. "I think you lost something."
"A third?!" Irving asked hardly able to contain himself. He turned to focus on Raven.
"You okay?" Raven asked glancing at the two of them. Violet nodded and Neela gave her a weak thumbs-up as she hit her knees from her aura breaking. The pain was much worse now… Neela's breathing became heavy. She reached back, almost out of energy, removing a gravity arrow from her quiver. "Step away from them, Chameleon."
"So you've heard of me?" He inquired flattered.
"I know I can take you," she guaranteed with a smirk. He gritted his teeth and disappeared, Neela slamming her arrow into his back as he did, forcing him to reappear. He stumbled forward in shock, his body tossed towards Raven who had already chosen a lightning blade, meeting his blades and coursing electricity through his body. He gripped his swords tightly, grinning through the pain as he held firm for a moment before the shockwave hit. Raven's body was thrown down the hall, she gripped her sword swiftly and threw it into the floor behind her, her feet planting on the hilt as she stood atop it for a moment, examining him before dislodging it with her foot and landing in front of it, snatching it from behind her without looking.
"We'll see about that!" He shouted. He thundered down the hall after her, and Neela hobbled over to Violet.
"What happened to you?" Violet asked. Neela smiled as she grunted and freed the woman.
"That's a long story, it can wait until later," Neela assured her as they left the room. Neela picked her sword up, which Raven had dropped on the floor before defending against Irving and sheathed it. "Come on."
"He's tough, Neela," Violet told her.
"If anyone can handle him, it's Raven," Neela pointed out.
"And here I thought that I was going to have a boring day today," Raven said to Irving as they struck each other's weapons again. Raven kept him on the defensive with a flurry of quick attacks, leaping as she sheathed her blade and slamming her feet against his hooks, throwing herself onto her back on purpose before rolling her body back into a handstand, pushing off and landing on her feet. She swiped, sending a wave of fire at him that he couldn't avoid. He yelled in rage, ignoring the flames as he tried the same maneuver with Raven as he had with Neela. He succeeded, removing her sword from her person, proud of himself as he swung down at Raven who was defenseless. She'd slid back, quickly taking her bird form, rushing past him as he failed to knock her out of the air. She reformed, picking up her blade, sheathing it as he became invisible. She removed the ice blade and swung through the air, waves of the frozen Dust crashing through the hallway.
"I'd hate to disappoint," Irving told her. He'd somehow avoided it, making her nervous and leaving her wondering if she should make a portal out. However, doing so came with the risk that he'd go through with her, and she couldn't risk that. She needed to keep that maniac away from Neela, and the rest of them. She chose gravity Dust this time as she put her odachi away, his hand gripping hers as she attempted to pull it back out. He reappeared, his blade slicing her just below the eyes and deep too, her aura rendering the damage obsolete, but she still needed to be more careful. "That must have hurt. Sadly, not a scratch."
"Back off or I'll make you regret the day they got you out of that prison," Raven growled. She head-butted him, taking him off guard as she took a step back, managing to unfasten her sheath with her free hand. She gripped it quickly with her left hand as it fell, firing the sword out, the hilt smashing into his forehead and leaving a cut as she caught it. She swung the Dust filled barrel of sorts around, smashing it into his temple, tossing it away as she reversed her momentum again, relieving him of his swords.
"You're just as good as the legends say," he panted, chuckling under his breath.
"Leave and I'll let you keep your life," Raven told him, holding her blade to his neck. He wiped the blood from his cheek.
"I should kill you for this," he grumbled. She pushed the blade closer and he glared at her, grunting.
"I'd like to see you try," She replied. He slowly raised his hands, stepping away from her carefully before picking up his blades and vanishing.
"Perhaps, next time?" He requested. She slammed her blade into the floor to ensure that he wasn't going to try anything, the gravity tearing apart the corridor, but failing to make impact with anything. She exhaled in relief and left through the door into the next hall over, hoping that Neela hadn't run into anyone else on the way out, she was sure that she'd killed most, if not all, of the Fang she'd come across. Raven traversed the compound with alarming speed, reaching the caved-in room at about the same time that Neela and Violet were.
"Did you kill him?" Neela asked, standing with Violet's help.
"He was strong," Raven admitted. "I know my limits." Neela nodded, her eyes glossed over.
"I think I do too now," Neela chuckled, almost falling over.
"I'm glad you didn't give up," Raven said, scooping Neela up into her arms. She looked Violet over. "Are you alright?"
"I've been better but I'm okay now," Violet stated. "I've had my share of close calls, but I'd have to say that this was the most nerve-racking."
"You do realize you're going to be in a lot of trouble when we get back," Raven noted. Neela looked up at her and nodded.
"There was no other way," Neela explained. Raven shook her head.
"You sound just like Yang when she was younger," Raven said, shaking her head. She opened a portal beside them. Violet stepped through first, followed by Raven and Neela in time to see Coco leap up from her chair and rush to Violet.
"You did it!" Coco shouted. "They're back!"
"Neela!" Blake yelled entering the room.
"Hey mom," Neela groaned, her breathing staggered. Blake gave a hug to Violet and looked her over as Yang entered the room and took her daughter from Raven.
"Thank you," Yang said graciously. Raven gave her a nod before taking a step back. "Neela, if you ever do something like that again, Blake is going to take your scroll away."
"Yang," Blake sighed, shaking her head. "We're just glad that you're okay."
"She's the one who managed to find Violet," Raven admitted. "If I'd been there without her semblance, I never would have found her."
"You holding up okay?" Coco asked the woman. Violet nodded, taking a deep breath.
"I'm a little shaken up, and in need of a decent meal, but outside of that I'm okay," Violet noted. "I'm guessing that you'd like a statement right away and any information that I can recall them talking about."
"Sounds like you've done this before," Coco stated.
"A few times," Violet chuckled.
"Do you need us?" Blake asked. Coco shook her head and waved them off.
"You two can take Neela to Ren so he can make sure she's not any worse off than this morning," Coco instructed them. "I'm going to ask Raven and Violet a few questions before I send them on their way."
"Right," Yang nodded leaving with her daughter, scolding her down the hall.
"Again," Blake addressed Raven. "Thank you."
"It was nothing," Raven told her. They left the room and Coco eyed Raven up and down.
"It was something," Coco said. "You've always run away from fights you weren't sure you could win, haven't you?" Raven's aura broke and she stumbled, catching herself on the edge of the table.
"In the past, yes," Raven replied. "Dammit. I don't remember being so weak."
"But how many of them did you fight through to get to me?" Violet asked. "Not to mention, Irving is a heavy hitter. Alex always told me that whenever they faced off."
"I'd hardly call that weak. Plus you brought Neela back in one piece," Coco added. Raven laughed as she sat down and breathed heavily.
"That girl has more fight in her body than I ever did," Raven offered. "From the moment that we got there, I could see it in her eyes. Fear. Pain. Panic. Doubt. Not once, not for a moment did I see her give in to any of it. She's going to be something else. Once she learns how to fully utilize her semblance, she's going to be hard to keep up with."
"You say that like I don't already know," Coco chuckled.
Violet has been saved. Hopefully, this puts Neela at ease and she has time to calm down before they let Elli out. Next week, Chapter 134 - Sisters!
