A Tale of a Terrier
Chapter one: A World Without Fences
The town of New Haven Connecticut. Quite the peaceful town it was. Full of friendly folk, and it always gave off a vibrant breeze through the air. In this lovely town, you could find anyone being greeted in a friendly manner, and it wouldn't warrent the raise of an eyebrow from anyone. Oh, look; there's one family now. Jim Dear, Darling, and their dogs, Lady and Tramp. They've had Lady for a while now, but Tramp had moved in more recently, after a series of events led to them falling in love. Together, Lady and Tramp had three daughters, all with their own personalities.
The daughters all shared their mother's trait of being Cocker Spaniels, and their brother, who...where's the boy? Oh, there he is, chasing the butterfly. This is Scamp, who takes after his father in quite a few ways, such as being a Terrier and his love for excitement. He was also the rebel of his family, though not to an intense degree, at least not when compared to some others, and his family was well aware of this. He was then pulled on the leash by his owner, not too roughly, but enough to get him moving.
As you could probably already tell, Scamp was the troublemaker of his family, always doing stuff like jumping into pictures for fun and surprising those who were there, as well as being the one to bark at squirrels to send them up trees. Most of the time, his family found his behavior to be quite charming, or adorable, but there were some cases where that wasn't what they thought at all. Even if Scamp could be a bit of a nuisance, his family still loved him dearly, and he loved them as well, even if he thought they were a bit too rulsey a lot of the time.
The family at one point stopped with an elderly woman walking up to them so they could greet her formally. Jim Dear was the one who did the talking with Scamp taking notice to two siamese cats in her picnic basket. "Why hello Aunt Sarah. Are you still attending our family picnic tomorrow?"
"Oh, of course. My sweeties just love a good picnic." The cats hissed at Scamp, who blew a raspberry at them to retort, leading to his dad giving him an eyebrow raise, which he ignored as they continued walking.
The two dogs we see on this house next to Jim Dear and Darling's are known as Jock, the Scottish Terrier, and Trusty, the Bloodhound. They found the family to be quite charming, and they were good friends with Lady, which was good, since she could rely on them to help with Scamp whenever he and his sisters needed a babysitter. Scamp picked up a flag that was in some kind of pot outside before Jim Dear picked him up and lightly touched him with it, making him laugh a bit as Jim Dear put it back, walking inside with the rest of the family.
While the family was inside, Jim Dear was preparing their baths, having four shampoo bottles with all of the puppies names on it: Scamp, Annette, Colette, and Danielle. He gave a slight chuckle upon realizing how much of a challenge it would be to get Scamp into his own bath. After he put the bubbles in, he called over to the puppies to inform them of their bath time. "Puppies! The bath is ready!"
One of the puppies was quite excited for this bath, as she always was. This was Collette, who wore a bright red collar, and had quite the love for looking stylish and general cleanliness. "Amazing! I just love getting a bath. Don't you girls?"
"Eh, it's okay." The one who just replied to Collette's words is Annette, who wore a blue collar, and was the clear snark of the trio. "I don't even mind Scamp's antics during bath time, I just find that the only benefit is getting clean."
The one wearing the white collar laughed a bit. This was Danielle, who was the air-headed one of the group. She wasn't more good hearted than her siblings, not that their morality is bad, and is more carefree if anything. "Yeah." Annette and Collette ran off with Danielle taking notice and chasing after them. "Hey, wait a minute!"
Scamp was lying on the ledge to the window, groaning in annoyance as he thought about bath time. "I hate baths."
"It's just a part of life son." Tramp told his son while lying on the floor, being quite familiar with Scamp's loathe for baths. "When you live in a house, you gotta stay clean."
"Then I'm glad I'm a wild dog!" Scamp exclaimed, and then he saw a Blue Heeler about his age lying down on his fence and giving him a sly wave, much to his confusion as he commented on it. "That's weird. What's a Blue Heeler doing in New Haven?"
Scamp tried to open the window but found it to be difficult, leading to Tramp becoming worried about both his safety, and if his son would break anything valuable. "Scamp, cmon. Get down there before you break something."
"I'm not gonna break anything dad." Scamp assured his father, and then he tried to open the window while grunting, only to cut a three second bacon fart, letting out a green cloud with Tramp wafting the fart scent away (phhhhht). Scamp gave a smirk from it as he looked at his father and commented on it. "Well, anything except wind." Tramp chuckled a bit as he then thought to himself 'That's my boy!', indicating that Scamp got his proudness of his farts from him. Scamp jumped down from the window and ran up to his father, feeling in the mood to play. "Hey, let's go do some fun stuff, eh pop?" Tramp had his head under the pillow with Scamp trying to move it. "Cmon, let's go!"
Scamp started to tug on the pillow with Tramp coming out from underneath it and telling Scamp to stop. "Scamp, cmon now. You're gonna make a mess." Scamp rolled his eyes at his dad's behavior with Tramp surprising him by grabbing the pillow. "Just kidding!"
Tramp started to make Scamp chase the pillow, much to his joy before he ran into a table, knocking a vase down with Tramp catching it. Jim Dear took notice and warned the two off screen. "Hey, easy guys, it's a good thing that's not our good vase." Scamp had already joined Junior, Jim Dear and Darling's son, and he'd already gotten Scamp into chewing up a hat with Jim Dear noticing. "Scamp!" Scamp stopped and backed up a bit, being a bit confused as Jim Dear picked it up. "Look what you did to my favorite hat. One of them anyway."
Jim Dear hung up his hat with Scamp shrugging and walking off as he was being scolded. "I've told you at least five times with these hats. No." Jim Dear picked Scamp up and brought him over to the bathtub, much to his annoyance as he started to be bathed and started squirming. "Stop squirming Scamp. I know you don't like baths, but this'll get done a lot quicker if you stay put."
When Scamp's bath was done, Junior threw a ball up to the counter, and it bounced off and went out the window. "Scamp, fetch the ball!"
Scamp was more than ready for this, jumping out of his bath to chase the ball, much to Jim Dear's surprise. When he ran outside, he ended up landing in some mud with Jim Dear calling over to him as the ball bounced away from him. "Scamp, don't do anything reckless!"
When Scamp came back inside, Annette, Collette, and Danielle were all in the hallway as Collette was talking. "I don't know about you two, but I want another bath." Scamp ran past them at that moment and got mud on them, which they didn't mind, especially Collette, since she got what she wanted. "Thanks Scamp!"
Scamp ended up thrashing the living room during his run, tearing down curtains and getting mud on the furniture. Junior was laughing as Scamp ran up to him after the caught the ball and started licking him, which stopped once Jim Dear commented on the situation. "Oh no, the living room!"
Junior realized he messed up for Scamp, and that Scamp was in a lot of trouble. "Uh-oh."
"This time you've gone too far!" Jim Dear exclaimed, attempting to scold Scamp, only to realize that he wasn't there, and was instead talking to Collette.
"Did you seriously thank me? That's a first."
"I know, right?"
Scamp was then met with his father's stern look, which he only gave a casual remark to. "Problem father?" Scamp was then being taken outside as he commented on the situation. "Lots of new things happening right now."
Jim Dear set Scamp down and started chaining him to the doghouse, which he wasn't particularly fond of. "Looks like normal discipline isn't working. Maybe chaining you up will do the trick." Scamp decided to try the puppy dog eye trick, which did manage to get Jim Dear to calm down, but he still stayed true to his decision. "I'm sorry bud. I just don't now what else to do. I can afford obedience school, but I don't wanna put you through that."
Jim Dear went inside with Scamp scoffing, flipping the dog bowl over and throwing the chain behind him before going into the doghouse and hitting his head on the wall. Lady always disliked it whenever Scamp did this, even though she knew it had to be for a reason, sighing with concern. "Another one of his temper tantrums." Tramp had to admit that he was also worried for their son, but he didn't want his bratty and rebellious behavior to go unpunished.
Tramp was watching Scamp outside, and his meltdown was still going, only he'd switched from banging his head to howling. Tramp did find this harder to ignore, but he could still do a serviceable job at it as Lady walked up to him and expressed her concern. "Oh Tramp. He's never been chained up before. He's just a pup."
"He needs to learn how to follow the rules of the house Lady." Tramp stated, knowing that Scamp wasn't going to get anywhere like this. "If he keeps up this behavior then he could get kicked out of the family, and God knows none of us want that."
Lady chuckled a bit, remembering the time she and Tramp first met and what led him into the family. "You turned out alright."
"Yeah Pidge, but I met you." Tramp added, lying down with Lady as the two of them looked outside to find Scamp still howling. "He'll understand someday."
Scamp let out one final howl with Lady putting her paws on one of Tramp's. "Maybe he needs to understand...today."
Scamp's temper tantrum seemed to have subsided, as he was now just lying on the ground sulking as Tramp brought him some dog food. "I thought you might be hungry." Tramp set the bowl down and scooted it over to Scamp, who sniffed it, but found it to smell bad and moved it to the side. "I'm sorry bud, but when you live in a house, you gotta follow certain rules." Scamp looked away from his father, who sensed that something was going on. "Something on your mind? Cmon buddy, you can trust me. Out with it."
"This, is stupid." Scamp snarked, and then he sat up and looked at his father. "Satisfied your highness?"
Tramp laughed a bit at Scamp's words, knowing that he got this sort of attitude from him. "Scamp, I hardly classify as royalty." Scamp felt that couldn't be more true with Tramp ending his laughter to talk with Scamp seriously. "I know something's bothering you Scamp. You can talk to me."
Scamp did have some things bothering him, but he decided to focus on the one he felt his dad would understand the most. "You wanna know what's bothering me? Fine. Inside the house, I'm beyond bored. I'm, beyored. I can't run around, I can't play, it all has to be outside. And I know I knocked Junior down once, but he wasn't hurt. And he forgave me as soon as it happened." Scamp scoffed at how strict everyone was and continued. "I feel like I need to be wild, and free, like a real dog! Didn't you ever feel that way when you were a puppy?"
Tramp decided to correct Scamp's thoughts first, knowing he needed to be put into the right mindset. "That's not the life for you Scamp. Here, you have a family who loves you."
"So long as I do what you say." Scamp retorted, showing that he wasn't buying whatever Tramp was telling him. "Cause otherwise, I'm being put on chains like I killed some random kid."
"Scamp, we don't think you killed some random kid." Tramp assured his son, and then he told him something that he would believe later on. "And believe it or not, I was pretty similar to how you are now when I was a puppy."
Tramp did his trademark scratch with Scamp making it fairly obvious that he didn't believe what he was told. "You were never like me." Scamp did the same scratch as his father before looking at him as he commented on what he thought. "You've been a house dog all your life. How would YOU know how it feels?"
"Oh, you'd be surprised." Tramp replied, and then he showed empathy when speaking. "Scamp, I'm only trying to protect you."
"Tch. Yeah, by tying me to this stupid doghouse, decreasing my freedom even further." Scamp shot at Tramp, loathing the situation he was in with every fiber of his being.
Tramp was having just about enough of his son's attitude, not taking it for a second longer. "Those are the rules son."
"All I ever hear is rules, rules, rules!" Scamp complained, sick of being told to follow rules all the time. "Why can't I just be me for once and not get scolded when one of Aunt Sarah's dumb cats tries to get me in trouble?" Tramp had to admit, he knew all too much about Aunt Sarah's cats. "What good are teeth, and-and (Shows claws) claws if you can never use them?"
Scamp howled again, much to Tramp's annoyance as he demanded his son to stop. "Stop that howling!"
"Make me!" Scamp dared his father, who then gave a smug grin at the idea.
"Okay." Tramp covered his son's mouth as he tried to howl again, making Scamp bite his father, much to his pain "Ow!
"You can't stop what's inside of me dad!" Scamp told his father, knowing that this was who he was. "Wild dogs howl at the moon!"
"There will be no wild dogs in this household!" Tramp states, and Scamp scoffed at those words. "Don't you scoff at me!"
"Or what? You're gonna give me even MORE reason to be bored of this family!?" Scamp snapped, surprising Tramp, and even his sisters, who were eavesdropping on the situation, and even though Scamp did feel remorse, he didn't want to show it, instead sighing with anger. "Dad, sometimes I wish you would just disappear so then I could just do whatever I wanted!"
"Well I'm not going to disappear, so until you get used to the way this family works, you can just get used to staying out here every night!" Tramp stormed off with the conversation over, leaving no clear winner as Lady went outside with him going inside. "Feel free to talk to him if you want Pidge. I doubt he'll listen though."
Scamp stormed into the doghouse with Lady walking over to it and peeking inside, giving Scamp her usual sweet and understanding tone. "Scamp? Are you alright sweetie?" Scamp didn't respond, but Lady didn't come in, feeling that it wasn't yet the time. "You didn't mean what you said there, did you."
Scamp knew what his mother was talking about, sighing and still facing the wall. "I guess not. I just hate that I can't have any fun around here."
"It's not that we don't want you to have fun Scamp." Lady assured him, knowing he was always going to be looking for excitement. "We just don't want you to get hurt is all. You do have a knack for causing trouble, like with the living room today." Scamp scoffed, feeling that his mother only mentioned the living room to guilt trip him, which wasn't the case. "We just want you to be mature when you grow up Scamp. (Walks up to Scamp) Maybe when you meet a nice girl, see something you never saw before, and have a feeling you never felt before, you'll understand."
Scamp did feel conflicted about something else, but didn't feel that he was ready to come out to his parents just yet. "Except...what if there's a different path for me? One that's different from yours and dad's. He hasn't even bothered to tell me how you met though, so that should be easy."
Lady could tell what Scamp was trying to hide and decided to give him a nice warm lick, which he rubbed off with slight annoyance. "No matter what life you live, as long as you're happy, I'll be happy. And so will your father." Lady walked out of the doghouse and back inside, leaving Scamp to hope that what she said was true.
A few minutes after Scamp had his fight with Tramp and his talk with Lady, he heard barking that was coming from the fence behind the doghouse. Being intrigued, he left the doghouse and went over to the fence to take a look. Luckily, he was able to take a peek through the hole in one of the boards, and he saw a bunch of dogs running from the dogcatcher. This made him excited, and he wished he could get in on the action. Of course, if he didn't already have owners then he'd be playing around with the dogcatcher every single day whenever he got the chance.
Scamp was mostly impressed by the sights of the Pomeranian/Siberian Husky Mix however, and not just because she looked to be his age. She was doing more than dodging and running, and was making smart moves like going for the pants legs and grabbing his net so she could throw it to the side. She also got a hold of his hat, throwing it into the garbage and tripping him as he ran to go get it. This made him fall into the garbage, and when he got out, he was furious. "Alright, I'd had just about enough of-"
Just then, a Doberman chomped onto the dog catcher's rear end, making him shout as loud as he could. He ended up throwing his hat into the air, and it landed in Scamp's yard, leading to him catching it as the Pomeranian Mix peeking her head through the hole and allowing Scamp to give it to her. She smiled and made their noses touch, much to his surprise as the other dogs ran up to him with the other dogs noticing with the Irish Wolfhound congratulating him on his moves. "Hey, nice catch there sport. Wanna join us in the final chase?"
Scamp was so excited that he forgot about his chain, but was reminded of it just as fast when he couldn't get out of the fence to join the group of stray dogs. "I, can't."
"Ah, owners holding you back?" Scamp nodded his head yes in response to the Boston Terrier/French Bulldog mix's question, and the group understood. "Aye, we get it. Well, see you around." The group of dogs ran off with the Pomeranian looking back at Scamp and winking to him. This made Scamp even more motivated as he popped his head out of the fence and jumped over it twice to get a closer look. After doing it two more times, it was confirmed that the group of dogs was gone, leaving Scamp bummed out that he couldn't go hang out with them.
Upbeat music started playing with Scamp plotting his escape as he got ready to sing A World Without Fences. "Far from, here is, where I want to be. (Starts running around the yard) Somewhere, out there, (Jumps off of a wooden post in the yard) loose and running. Nobody's (Stands on top of a tree stump) leash to hold me. Nobody's (Goes through a shrub) hugs to crush me. Nobody's (Goes under bench and rake) soap and scratchy comb to bathe and brush meeee."
Scamp grabbed onto a shirt on a clothesline and jumped off of it, landing in a barrel full of water as he continued singing. "A world without fences. (Jumps out of the barrel and runs off) Where I (Jumps onto a birdbath and scares a couple of birds off) can be freeeee." Scamp started picturing himself on the other side of the fence in all it's glory. "And be with real dogs who bring the real dog out in meeee."
Scamp imagined himself running through the fence and joining the junkyard dogs to have a blast with them. "No walls and no boundaries. Where I can be freeee. A world without walls and fences, (Stands atop a cliff and looks over the horizon) that's exactly, where I want to beeeeeee!" Scamp imagined himself jumping down a cliff and surviving like it was nothing and running off again, only to be stopped by his chain as he then realized that he was at the backyard porch.
Scamp looked back at the front door as he continued singing with the Blue Heeler from earlier watching and having his attention caught. "This pup, won't just, sleep his life away. On some, sofa, like his father." The Blue Heeler jumped into the yard and hit behind the doghouse as he snuck up to the chain holder as Scamp continued singing. "Too many bones to chew up, too many smells to sample, too many fancy flowers just to rip and trampleeee." The Blue Heeler took a liking to Scamp and was more than happy to watch as Scamp imagined himself spotting the Doberman by a river.
The music got a bit higher pitched along with Scamp's singing as the song continued. "No rules to control me." Scamp imagined himself and the group of dogs barking at cats for fun. "That's where I want to beeee. A world without fences, (Jumps into the a puddle) that's the world I want for meeee." Scamp imagined himself and the Doberman digging up bones in the mud with him flexing on him by pulling out a dinosaur skeleton. "No rules, no responsibilities. (Scamp imagined himself running through the fields On my own, completely freeeee."
Scamp was yanked by the chain again and the Blue Heeler unchained it for him by unclicking his collar from the hook as he continued singing. "A world without fenceeeees, (Scamp ended up rolling into the fence but finished his song anyway) for meeeeeee!" Scamp saw that he was unchained with the Blue Heeler walking up to him. "Wahoo! So long you house dogs. You can't tell ME what to do anymore, cause I'm a wild dog!" Scamp escaped with his new Blue Heeler friend joining him, being grateful for his help. "Thanks for the help back there dude. That chain was annoying me."
The Blue Heeler was more than happy to be of assistance and gladly introduced himself while giving off an Australian accent, which Scamp liked a lot. "No problem mate. You seemed a bit bored with your family back there so I figured I'd show you around the parts of town they'd never let you go into. Only the most daring of daredevils will be able to survive some of these parts. Speakin of which, Devil's the name, get over it." Scamp laughed a bit with Devil making sure he knew he was serious about the name. "Seriously though. My name is Devil."
"Well Devil, I'm Scamp." Scamp replied, and the two walked around to see what they could do. "And yeah, I was getting pretty bored of my family. It's always rules this and rules that, rules, rules, rules! I mean, I'm fine with a couple rules, but not a million of them at once."
"I know what ya mean." Devil admitted, and then he pulled down a graph which toppled onto Scamp, much to his surprise with Devil pointing to each thing with a stick. "See Scamp, my old family (Scamp comes up and in front of the graph) just didn't get me. I was always into action, makin people laugh when I saw the chance, and having a good time in general. Heck, I even like singin songs like the one you did. (Scamp gags at the sight of Devil's family) The family you see here was all boredom and rules and holdin me back, and when I realized this, first chance I got, I bolted."
Devil pulled the graph up with Scamp assuring him that he'd try to be as fun as he could. "Well you don't have to worry about that with me Devil. I'm gonna be as fun as I possibly can!"
"Glad to hear that Scamp. Now then, let the tutorial begin!" Devil ran off with Scamp right behind him, being excited to finally have actual freedom. Devil could tell he was excited for this and looked back with a grin. "Prepare yourself Scampy! This is your first night of the rest of your life as a free dog and we're gonna embrace every moment of it full circle!" The sunset was shown to indicate that nighttime was coming around with Scamp and Devil laughing with immense excitement.
