Chapter 6. Lonely Night

Jang Gyeoul finally woke up. As soon as she gets the grasp of what is happening he immediately rose from the bed she's been laid on, scratch-off of whatever was put into her during her sleep, put her glasses on, itching to go somewhere, to Jeongwon, to the airport, he must still be there, right? But was grabbed by Prof Chae Song-Hwa. They were worried when SeokHyeong called them earlier, telling them what happened. The guys have gone out to grab some food, while Min-ha was on duty, leaving Song-Hwa to look after her.

"Oh gyosunim, anyeonghasseyo."That's all she said. She was in a hurry, her hair still disheveled.

"Please stop right now. Gyeoul-ssi."

"He's gone. Jang Gyeoul sonsaeng."

I miss you even more at times like this

When I'm all alone

I know you're gone

But I keep thinking of you

Gyeoul halts, hands on her chest, a tightening of her throat and a short intake of breath is all she could feel. She couldn't hold the heartbreak longer as she fell to the floor in a disheveled heap as her grief poured out in a flood of uncontrollable tears. Song-hwa was heartbroken seeing the young resident break down because of his friend. She could sense the pain Gyeoul was experiencing right now, all she could do was hug her, not attempting to comfort her because she knows, no matter how much she told her that it's gonna be okay, she knows deep inside that it will take a long time, ani, it may take forever.

Why did you leave me that day?

You said it was too hard

If that's your reason, that's your reason but

I just don't know

Gyeoul didn't utter a word, she just sobbed, catching her breathe in between. It's almost midnight but here she is, crying her heart out in the middle of the hospital hallway, thinking of what she did wrong, asking her worth.

"Maybe if I told him earlier, he shouldn't have left. Maybe if she said no when he asked for a break, he's still here..maybe-"

"Gyeoul-ssi, don't say that. Don't blame yourself."

"Gyosunim, why…."

"I know this is hard for you, much harder than us, his friends. If only we knew what you were going through..we should have stopped him, no matter what. I am sorry Gyeoul-ah, that you have to go through this pain. I know we can't ease the pain right away, but we promise, me…the guys…we promise we will take care of you."

You still remain in my memories

The pain of love lasts for a lifetime. It sucks, but there's nothing you can do about it. No matter how much you pour your heart out, no matter how much you beg for the heavens, the scar will remain forever. Funny how the heart makes no noise when it cracks, yet the pain it causes makes you feel a crushing sense of sadness, of anger, of torment. Is this a punishment? Punishment of her asking him to stay? If it is, isn't it too much?

Gyeoul used to love nights like this, coming home from work with Jeongwon welcoming her in his arms as they talk about their day, their future. It's crazy how life works, one day you're happy, the next day you're broken. No matter how many times she tells herself that she can get through this, it's just hard. Yes, she was brave and courageous, and strong…but broken all at once. She was lost in thought, letting out deep sighs, tears crawling down her cheeks. What will she do now?

"Gyeoul-ah? Are you okay now?" It was Professor Chae, who volunteered to look out for her for tonight. She hesitated the offer first, but Song-hwa was firm in accompanying her. It was hard for Song-Hwa to look at her, hopeless, and shattered. In all honesty, the news of Jeongwon leaving was quite a surprise for them as well. All he said was he needed time to think and to get away with everything. He didn't even let us escort him inside the airport, no matter how many times they insisted.

"I'll see all of you soon. Please take care of Gyeoul for me." That was his last words, as they see the retreating figure away from them. Jeongwon, wherever you are…please come back soon. You sure did leave a big mess of your own, Song- Hwa thought as she holds Gyeoul's hand who was still staring blankly outside the window in her apartment. The other three guys have been pestering her for updates, all worried about Gyeoul.

"Gyeoulah, you should eat-"

"Gyosunim, do you think he'll come back soon?" That's the first words she said that night, and Songhwa didn't even know how to answer her. She pursed her lips, careful of the words she will say.

"I…I also don't know. But hey..we're here…Min-ha's here.. I am here. We will get through this, okay?"

"I am sorry for dragging you and the other professors in my mess…"

"Hey, hey…don't say that. Jeongwon, he's our friend, you are his girlfriend, you are family to us now. You and that little bundle of joy, you'll soon meet."

Oh, right. She's pregnant, she's going to be a mom. Gyeoul put her hands on her tummy, rubbing it softly telling her unborn child how much she's sorry for letting this all happened. How will she tell her parents now? The last time they talked she told them she's gonna tell Jeongwon and then go visit them. Her parents always adored Jeongwon for his manners, and how he took care of her. They knew how happy their daughter is with him and promised to support them all the way. That's why when she told them about her, being pregnant, they were over the moon. Her parents were not strict and traditional, although there were worries, they believed in them. Both are doctors, and already enough to make the right decisions, what could go wrong?

Everything went wrong. Her plans, her future, her life. The news of Jeongwon leaving reached her little brother, Yeorum. He was exasperated, and he feels betrayed. He trusted his only sister to that jerk, knowing that he was the best person on this planet, the only man for her. But in the end, sadness and pity are all he could feel for her sister. Now, as they're driving down to her hometown to visit her parents, she couldn't help but feel nervous, and anxious. She knows her parents understood her situation but facing them, and telling them the news, felt like she hasn't done her duty, that she let them down.

As they arrived, she can see her mother and father from afar. Yeorum held her hands and told her it's gonna be fine, and she trusted him. The moment she stepped out of the car, her mother stood up and came running to them, to her. As soon as her mother encapsulated her in her arms, she started sobbing.

"Mianhe, eomma."

"Shh. Gwenchan…Uri ddal, you've been through so much.."

They were in the living room, Gyeoul telling the whole story, breaking into tears, in between. She's scared, she tells them. She doesn't know what to do. How to be a mom? How to raise a child, alone. She's lucky her parents are there, supporting her. If there's one thing she's grateful for this moment, it's having them by her side. They understand her, her suffering, her whole being. It's already has been done, there's no use of pinpointing of who's at fault. All she can do now is to move forward, and survive, and fight, alone. As much as she wanted to stay for the night, she had surgery to perform tomorrow, so she needed to get back to Seoul. She was about to enter his brother's car when her father utters her name. She stopped her tracks and turned around. Her father held her hands, tears were forming into his eyes. He wasn't much of a talker, he's cold just like her, but seeing him getting emotional in front of her, she knows that his father was also hurting, with her.

"Gyeoulah, uri aleumdaun ttal (our beautiful daughter)…mianhe."

"…mianhe, that I wasn't there when it happened. I am sorry, you have to go through this. Jeongwonie, I saw in his eyes, that he loves you so dearly, that it broke my heart when I heard about him leaving you. However, I know, he has his reasons, we might not know what it is, but I hope you won't hate him for the rest of your life…"

"…I am mad at what he had done, but I also know how he made you happy all this time, and for that, I am still grateful. Don't let hate consume your heart, my daughter. Arasseo?"

It was a hard request, but she'll try. But maybe, not tonight.

So, I just got my album today, and the first thing the Kihno Kit played was Lonely Night by Kwon Jin-ah, hence, the inspiration of this chapter.

To be honest, it's making me cringe when I leave notes likes this bcos I feel like I am not good enough of a writer but your comments make my heart flutter (i don't know why lol)
