Somewhere during their trip to Montauk (end of season 3, beggining of season 4).
MONTAUK
"I think you should give him a chance." He told her, his arms crossed over his chest. She looked at him with questioning blue eyes.
"You mean Chandler?" She chuckled. "He's joking, Joey."
Joey rolled his eyes. He wasn't that dumb.
"I know he's joking,"He explained. "But it doesn't mean that he wouldn't go for it if he knew you'd let him."
She looked at him like he was crazy. He uncrossed his arms and put a hand on her shoulder.
"I think you could be good together." He stated. He was being honest and logical, two things the girls constantly told him to try out more. Chandler and Monica were best friends for years, he was clearly attracted to her, and Joey was pretty sure he's heard Monica call him cute several times over the years. Granted, cute isn't ideal when it comes to women you want to date, but he's experienced situations where 'cute' was code for 'hot'. Also, Chandler was the only one who could actually stand Monica when she was on a cleaning/cooking frenzy. "Very good together." He finished.
He could see he was getting to her when she raised an eyebrow. She swallowed and cleared her throat before speaking, her eyebrow still raised and her eyes narrowing.
"Did Chandler put you up to this?" She asked suspiciously. "I mean, this whole thing was between us. He wants me to admit he's boyfriend material, he should convince me himself, not send you toー"
"Monica." He stopped her, his hand falling from her shoulder and running through his hair in frustration. The woman couldn't take a hint sometimes. "Chandler has no idea I'm talking to you about this. He didn't even tell me about this 'boyfriend material' stuff." He rolled his eyes. Only Chandler would approach a girl trying to make her admit he's boyfriend material. "The thing is that I'm tired to watch you two flirting the whole trip. We came to Montauk to have fun, but now Ross and Rachel are back at drama zone, Phoebe's having trouble with her family and when I thought I could count on you and Chandler to dig holes on the sand and play strip poker with me, you two don't even look at me twice, too busy with each other to even know what's goingー"
"Hey, hey, hey!" She stopped him. "First of all, we weren't flirting." He rolled his eyes and she looked deeply offended. "Second of all, if you wanted us to spend more time with us, you could've just asked." She crossed her arms.
"I did!" He yelled out, frustrated. "I asked like five times, but you were busy talking about a nuclear whatever and Chandler being the only guy in the world available. I mean, how stupid is that? Did I die from this nuclear thing? The only way Chandler would be every girl's option involves me being dead."
"You're exaggerating, Joey." She argued. "We've been completely normal with each other."
"Yes! I know! And that's exactly my point." He explained.
She didn't look convinced. Who cares, he was already tired of thinking too logically for a lifetime. He would much rather bury himself in the sand.
"You know what, forget about it." He asked, already turning around to follow up his beach related plans. "Pretend I didn't say anything." Joey meant to walk away, but she held his arm and pulled him to look at her.
"It's not that I don't think he'd be a good boyfriend." She started. "I just don't see him like that."
"You really don't have to explainー"
"And he keeps asking about it, and I don't really know what he wants to hear. He's really confusing me with this thing, and I don't know what to do about it."
"Monica, I don't want toー"
"I mean, I laughed at his face when he first suggested that he'd be my boyfriend, and I thought that was the natural reaction, but he actually looked hurt, and I don't know what it means."
"I just want to go to the beachー"
"Does that mean he's hurt because I think he's not boyfriend material or is it something else?"
"I really shouldn't have said anyー"
"Because if it's 'something else', I'm not sure I can deal with it right now."
"I'm sure it's not…something else."
"You are?" She asked, finally stopping her rant.
"Uh, I guess."
"You guess?"
"What do you want, Monica? Whatever it is, that's the answer."
"I'm not sure what I want."
"Well, then I guess he's not sure either."
"How the hell would you know?"
"Exactly. Stop asking me, then."
"But I really want to know what he wants."
"You could always ask him."
"I can't ask him, Joey!"
"Why the hell not?"
"Because I can't."
"You know what, I'm leaving." He turned around to leave. "I'm never talking about you two again."
"Oh come on, Joey. We're just having a friendly conversation."
"No, we are not." He kept walking away. "You two have no right to mess with my head like this. You better not ask me for anything in the future."
"What in the world would we ask for?" She asked, laughing. He didn't turn around and didn't answer. He finally got to the beach.
Who knows what those two would ask for, but knowing their ways, it would involve some kind of secret keeping, and Joey did not keep secrets!
