Assignment 3 - Floristry - Task #3 - Boutonniere: Write a fic with one of the following themes: Deep/pure love, Affection, Admiration, Good luck

Until We Meet Again

Sirius and Remus made a deal at fifteen - if they were both single at the age of thirty, they'd marry each other. As Sirius turns thirty, he sets out in search of his friend who moved away years ago.

Remus sits on the wall that runs around the edge of the school playground. A lot of the students have already left and Remus knows he'll have to go eventually. At some point they'll want to lock up the gates.

He just wants a few minutes to sit and think before his friends find him, because he knows they'll be waiting outside of the gates, as they always do. Remus passes Sirius' house each day to and from school, and they walk together. Of course Sirius is waiting.

"Moony, you coming?" someone shouts. Remus turns his head and he can see James a distance away, waving at him to hurry up.

Remus wants to be alone, but his friends don't understand the word 'alone'. Sirius especially because Sirius hates being alone. He hates it so much and sometimes Remus can understand that loneliness.

He gets off the wall and walks towards the far gate. James has disappeared back to the others. Remus reaches them a couple of minutes later. James is sitting on the steps by the school, Sirius is leaning against the wall, smoking a cigarette and trying to look cool, and Peter is urgently looking at the watch on his wrist, clearly eager to start walking home - not that he'll actually voice that in fear that Sirius will tease him.

Remus feels sorry for him. "Sorry guys," he says. "Should we get going?"

They nod and begin to walk, all heading in the same direction. It's one of the reasons they became friends in the first place - because they all walk in the same direction. They got into the habit of catching each other up on the way home. Then they'd wait at the gates. It led to being friends in school.

James and Sirius walk ahead and Remus gives Peter a few tips for the homework due Monday, knowing full well that Peter hasn't finished it yet. They get halfway down the long road, before they all stop.

"Plans this weekend?" Peter asks.

"Oh. If you guys have any money we could go to the cinema?" James asks, looking around.

Remus and Sirius both shrug their shoulders. Remus rarely has money for those activities and Sirius' parents rarely let him go out.

"I'll call you all and see if we can sort it out," James replies. "Have a good weekend."

"You too," Sirius and Remus both reply. James crosses the road with Peter and they head down a nearby road, leaving Sirius and Remus to continue their walk.

"You're upset," Sirius points out after a few minutes of walking. "You can tell me."

Remus shrugs once more. "I asked out Benjy," he admits, knowing Sirius won't let go of this, and also wanting someone to talk to about it. "He said no."

Sirius curses and lets out a loud sigh. "Damn, Moony," he mutters. "I thought he liked you. I was willing to bet money on that."

"I think it was more to do with being publicly out," Remus tells him. "Though does it even matter? He said no, so… that's that. Dating is hard - what if I never find a boyfriend?"

"You'll find one. You're adorable. Look at those eyes, any guy would be stupid to turn you down," Sirius tells him. "Remus, you're beautiful, okay? Don't let anyone make you feel different."

Remus shrugs. "I'm going to die alone." Something inside him does a flip at Sirius' words, but Sirius hasn't been forthcoming with his sexuality and Remus has no plans to push to find out if Sirius finds him beautiful or 'beautiful'. He's terrified of losing his friend.

"Hey, I thought I was the melodramatic one," Sirius complains, laughing softly. "Okay, how's this? So neither of us die alone, how about we get married?"

"Shittest proposal ever," Remus replies. His stomach has that flippy feeling again though and he hopes Sirius has more to say. This is already sounding like the most excellent idea in existence. They pause as Sirius lights another cigarette. He passes it to Remus first, and Remus takes a long drag before passing it back.

He watches Sirius press his lips around it, and watches the billow of smoke as he exhales.

"No, I was thinking - people make these agreements all of the time. What if we get married if we're both single when we're thirty?" he suggests. "Thirty is pretty old. People always get married before then."

Remus doesn't want to imagine being married to his crush. He resists picturing them having a house together and doing things like food shopping and putting together furniture. He knows realistically that Sirius will already be in a relationship or married by that point, but he can't refuse an offer like that.

On the slim chance that Sirius remains single, Remus may have a shot with him.

"You know what, when we're thirty, if we're both single, I'll marry you," he promises. He reaches for the cigarette and brings it to his lips. "But you'll have to give me a better proposal than that."

"I'll make all your dreams come true," Sirius promises with a wide grin. "I'm excellent husband material. Just you watch and see."

He changes the topic as quickly as Sirius does, already distracted by something else, but Remus thinks about those words.

He thinks about it as the years pass. As he loses contact with his friends, as everything goes downhill.

He thinks fondly of that moment as he sits quietly, listening to people pass on the street nearby, traffic roar down the road. Somewhere out there, Sirius is celebrating his thirtieth birthday and all Remus has left of him are these memories.

oxo

Sirius has been thinking about this moment ever since he turned thirty. Maybe he's not that old, but at the same time, he's had his heart broken so many times that he just hates the idea of going on more dates and meeting more creeps. It's like he somehow finds the worst of the worst and just flings his heart in their direction without considering for a moment that they'd break it or destroy it or do anything they can to shatter his heart into tiny pieces. Then there's Danny. Danny who just destroys it over and over and Sirius the fool who lets this happen.

But he's found himself remembering an old friend. Someone who he hasn't seen in over ten years. An old friend from school who Sirius lost touch with, regrettably enough, because fifteen, sixteen, seventeen and eighteen year old Sirius Black were all so madly in love with the other teenager, and had they stayed in contact, Sirius is sure he'd still be feeling that love just as strongly.

Not that he ever stopped remembering Remus Lupin or the way he brought light into Sirius' life.

Sirius doesn't quite know what love is these days. He's not really had much experience in healthy love. His parents certainly didn't love him, and Regulus - though Regulus loves him, he struggles to express his emotions, not that Sirius can blame him - though James has helped him so much with that. Their parents were the worst and left two very screwed up sons in the care of the Potters.

Dorea and Charlus, however. They love him. They treat him like family, and they've been the family he's never had, and it's nice. He loves them as though they're his own parents.

He's looking for a family of his own. To fall in love, to start something with someone. To be happy, to not have his heart broken over and over again by people who will mess him up emotionally, that'll lie to him, date him for his money and expect everything from him but giving nothing back, or even being cheated on.

But as he starts to approach thirty, Remus Lupin is on his mind more and more. He's tried to find Remus a few times - most recently a couple of years ago when James was getting married for the second time, but with no luck, but he wants to try again. Because maybe Remus is thinking about that same agreement? Maybe Remus is single?

Maybe he isn't, because Remus was always wonderful, but at least Sirius would have his friend back in his life. He needs a friend. James has Regulus and Peter's in prison and Sirius feels so alone. He's felt like something has been missing since Remus disappeared.

He never felt alone when Remus was a part of his life. He thought back in the past, that Remus would always be there. And he was, until one day, not long after Remus' birthday, he wasn't.

Remus and his family had simply disappeared and Sirius had been heart-broken, and it still hurts to think about, because Sirius assumed that Remus would always be there, no matter what.

He starts with the internet, typing in Remus' name as he did years ago. But there's very little there for him to find. The internet, with it's vast knowledge, is not offering him the answers he seeks and Sirius is already annoyed. He knows it's not going to be easy, but this first setback reminds him of all of the effort he put in last time, to no avail.

This time he has more of a reason though. He missed Remus more than he could explain to the others. They all cared for Remus and all looked, but Sirius looked longest and hardest because Remus held that special spot in his heart.

Remus still does, but Sirius doesn't want to tell anyone that because if Remus is in a relationship, things could get weird. He's not even sure he'll find Remus yet. But he looks at the face of every stranger on the street, hoping that Remus is there. Hoping that today is the day that he'll just bump into Remus and they'd laugh and hug and catch up and Remus would be so happy to see him.

He has some money - he could hire a private investigator or something - someone who can actually find Remus, but Sirius doesn't want to spend that money. That's what's left of the money his Uncle Alphard gave him, money that was split between him and Regulus.

He used a large amount to buy a small business to have money coming in. The rest is saved for a house for when he does settle down and have a family. He doesn't want to touch that money because there's a plan for it. He had been generous in previous relationships which is why he spent quite a bit, but he's learnt that lesson.

His restaurant is really taking off, and Sirius is in a good place in his life. He has a lot to offer, he hopes. But deep down, he knows his life hasn't felt right ever since Remus disappeared from it. But now… now he's going to search and search until he's found Remus.

Even if Remus is married with kids, Sirius doesn't care. He just misses Remus so much. He just wants Remus back in his life, in any capacity.

oxo

He looks around, seeing James and Lily, and Peter. All dressed in black, all looking sad. Lily dabs at her eyes with a tissue and Peter is leaning against James for support.

He doesn't know what's happening. He doesn't know why he's here. "What's going on?"

"Remus," James murmurs. He's not crying, but his eyes are red. His gaze shifts to a nearby board and Sirius turns, looking at a picture of Remus.

"What… what is this?" Sirius asks, turning. There are rows of chairs all facing the front, and he can see the coffin.

He approaches, and feels less able to breathe with each step. "Is this Remus? Is he dead?"

"There are worse things than dying, Sirius," comes a familiar voice and hearing Remus talking is terrifying. If this is Remus' funeral, why is he talking?

Sirius leans over to look inside, but as he does, he feels the panic rise up inside of him and suddenly he's back in his dark bedroom. His skin and sheets are drenched in sweat and his hair sticking to his skin.

He gets out of bed on shaking legs and reaches for his phone. He dials a familiar number.

"I'm sorry to wake you," Sirius starts.

"The nightmare again?" James asks. "Give me a minute." Sirius hears a door creaking and then the sound of a kettle being turned on. "Talk to me."

Sirius balances the phone between his shoulder and ear as he starts to strip the covers.

oxo

Sirius' gaze is on the short list that consists of Remus' name, old address and his parents' names. He's checked all of these before and there has been nothing. The internet will be the best hope, he thinks, though he can't help himself as he walks from his flat over to his motorbike. It's a familiar route and maybe Sirius has travelled past this house so many times in the last few years, even though Remus Lupin doesn't live there anymore.

It doesn't stop him from pulling up at the familiar house, parking his bike and walking over. He pauses at the metal gate, leaning on it as he observes the site before him.

The garden isn't the same anymore. In the years passed, the flowers that Hope used to grow are gone now. The garden has short grass and half of it has been paved over to make a driveway. There's a fresh coat of paint on the house since Sirius was last there.

Maybe this place holds no answers, but it helps to see the place Remus was last in.

The door opens and a woman steps out, a teenage boy hovering protectively nearby.

"Hello? Can I help you?" she calls warily. Her phone is clenched in her hand and Sirius straightens.

"I'm sorry for startling you," he replies. "An old friend used to live here, years ago. I've been searching for him and I just… I just stopped to reminisce, I suppose."

She looks slightly less wary, but still stays back. "We moved in about a year ago," she says. "I could look around for the contact information for the people who lived here before?"

Sirius shakes his head. "The Pattersons?" he asks. "Yeah, I spoke with them before. My friend and his family disappeared about twelve years ago." He hesitates for a long moment. Maybe these people will be able to get him something the last family never did. "If you ever dig up the garden, there's a spot to the left of the tree - we buried this time-capsule there. If you ever come across it, I own a restaurant in town, Canis Majoris. Just… I'd appreciate it if it's still there. Maybe he took it when he left. I asked the Pattersons but they never looked."

The woman looks sympathetic now. Perhaps because Sirius has given a few personal details such as his place of employment, though the woman wouldn't know if it's a lie. Maybe he just appears trustworthy, but the suspicion fades.

"We're in the middle of getting the garden done up," she tells him. "How far away?"

Sirius considers this. He remembers sitting in the small garden, his back against the tree, Remus complaining about digging the hole inches from his feet. He tells the woman that and thanks her.

She hasn't got anything to offer, so he heads back to his bike and climbs on, avoiding the quick route home again. That route will take him past his parents home, and he doesn't want to be near there.

He considers visiting Dorea and Charlus, but remembers that they're on a trip. He itches to call them for advice, but he's not going to do that.

As he drives away, he tells himself that this time he'll find Remus Lupin. Even if he digs into his savings and hires someone to find Remus for him.

oxo

Sirius finds a few websites aimed at finding people who have lost contact with. He fills his name and a brief bit of information out on each, but he's not too hopeful. The websites aren't massively active, yet he does a hopeful search in case Remus has ever left a message for him or James or Peter.

He reads all messages that could be related to him in the slightest, but he struggles to work out the filters on the site and finds that he's wasting his time.

He calls James.

"I'm looking for Remus again," he says, the moment James answers with a cheerful 'hello'.

There's a long silence as though James is debating what to say in return. Maybe a drunk seventeen year old Sirius confessed his love for Remus to James, and it's those secrets that stop James from telling Sirius immediately that he should give up. Maybe he can hear the need and desperation in Sirius' voice.

He knows James misses Remus too. Over the years, James has expressed his upset that he didn't pay close enough attention to Remus to realise something was wrong (because why else would he up and leave without telling them? Without getting in contact? They knew each other's numbers off by heart so it's not like Remus would forget). James is convinced that something was wrong, because Remus wouldn't just up and move and not tell anyone.

Sirius spent a long time thinking Remus abandoned him, but there's been this hint of hope because James hasn't allowed him to believe Remus is that sort. He's going to find Remus and he's not going to give up this time.

"What do you need me to do?" James asks, after a long moment. "Because this time, we're finding him."

"The internet is… I suppose, useful," Sirius says. "I can't find him on the facebook."

"You can't find anything on facebook," James laughs. "I'm surprised you even manage to log on."

"The point is… I need Harry. I've seen him typing away on the computer like a pro, so maybe he can help me navigate."

There's some murmuring from behind him and suddenly Regulus is on the phone.

"Time is getting on a little bit," he says. "So if Harry is coming over, you'll need to either wait until he's had dinner here, or sort him out some food."

"I'll order pizza," Sirius insists.

"Great. We'll come over tomorrow lunchtime as always," Regulus tells him. "Hopefully you have some luck in your search." There's a sympathetic edge to his tone, which Sirius appreciates because Regulus sucks at showing emotions. "Me and James are going to go for a meal tonight. Who's cooking at your restaurant?"

"Alice," Sirius says.

"Right. See if you have space and text me," Regulus tells him. "We'll brainstorm a little and see if we can think of any alternate alleys we haven't tried in the past."

"I appreciate it," Sirius says. "Do you want me to walk down to you and pick Harry up?"

"James has to go to the shops, he'll drop Harry," Regulus says. "I'll help him get ready. I'll talk to you soon. Expect them in about half an hour at the latest."

"Thanks," Sirius replies, before hanging up. He quickly calls Kingsley, the assistant manager to make the reservation, before ordering some food for him and Harry. The Potter-Black household lives just around the corner and he's sure they'll be much quicker than ten minutes.

Food ordered, he texts Regulus the time that he's booked their table for.

By the time Harry arrives, Sirius is already setting the pizza out. James is in and out, wishing Sirius luck before returning to Regulus. He seems too eager at having an empty house and Sirius doesn't want to consider what the pair are doing.

They eat and then Harry looks towards the list.

"Right, so this is the Remus that you and dad talk about sometimes when you're telling school stories, right?"

Sirius nods. "I tried a search but it's showing me all of the Remus' and also all of the Lupins, and am I using the google thing right?"

Harry laughs. "If you put quotation marks around the name, it'll do a search on the two words together," he explains, sitting in front of the computer and typing Remus' name in. They spend a little time filtering out another Remus Lupin in America, before Harry sits back with a sigh.

"Uncle Pads, there's nothing I can see," he admits. "I need to search for something more specific."

"Look up his parents," Sirius suggests. Already, Harry has managed more than he has. He hovers as Harry writes Remus' mother's name into the search engine. When that fails, Harry tries Remus' father's name.

After a few minutes, Harry stumbled upon a marriage announcement for Lyall Lupin. It's not helpful, but it's a start. Lyall has remarried and lives in Ireland, so they can't just drop in on him. The next step is finding out Hope's maiden name.

Harry suggests reaching out to Lyall, but Sirius knows that if Hope is still in England, so is Remus.

oxo

"Hope Howell in this picture," Harry says, pointing to a blond frail looking woman outside of a care home. "Is this the right one?"

Sirius walks over, setting drinks down. He's tired - Hope Howell is quite a popular name it seems, and there are a lot of results. But as Harry zooms in, Sirius' eyes widen. "That's her," he insists. "That's Hope." He feels dizzy, light-headed. They've found Remus' mum. This is happening.

He high-fives his godson. "We know where his mum is, so she'll be able to get his address," he says. "I'll find Remus."

"And marry him," Harry snickers.

"Oi, what do you know about that?" Sirius asks, crossing his arms.

"Everything. You fancy him," Harry laughs. "You're so obvious, Uncle Padfoot."

oxo

"Can I help you?" a nurse asks, as Sirius walks into the care-home the next day. He's absolutely terrified, even though Hope had been like another mum to him.

"Yeah. I'm here to see Hope," he replies. "Family."

The woman nods, typing at her computer. "I'm sorry, she's only got her son marked down as a visitor," she says.

"Oh. Well, can you ask her if she's free?" Sirius asks. "I'm an old family friend, she was like a mum to me when I was younger and… I'd really like to see her again." Her son is marked down as a visitor. Remus Lupin is still alive, and must be local to the area. It's just one town over and it's not as far from Sirius' place as he thought it'd be.

The woman nods and stands up, walking down the hallway. Sirius clutches the flowers and the box, terrified that Hope won't see him, but he quickly realises he's worrying over nothing, because when she returns, she smiles and sends Sirius to room twelve.

Sirius walks down the hallway and knocks on the door.

"Come in?" comes the oh so familiar voice and Sirius' hands are shaking as he opens the door. Hope has always looked a little frail, but she looks like she'd break if Sirius hugged her too hard.

She stares at him for a long moment. "My darling, it's been so long," she finally says, her confusion fading into a smile. "I didn't expect to see you here, but I'm glad. How are you? Tell me all about yourself. Are you married? How is James and little Peter?"

"They're good. James is married, I'm not. Maybe I can bring James over sometime?" he suggests. "How are you, Hope? It's been so many years."

"It has." Her smile fades slightly. "Remus talks about you often."

"He does?" Sirius asks, surprised.

"Yes," Hope replies. "I was so worried about him, being all alone. He's not been taking care of himself. He tells me he is, but a mother knows when something is wrong. I'm glad he's back in contact with you boys. You were always so good for him."

"Actually, now you've mentioned - I've misplaced his phone number. You don't have it, do you?" Sirius lies.

"I don't," Hope replies, sighing. "Remus keeps telling me he'll write his details down but he never does. But he does stop every week. Between you and me I think he feels bad I'm in here."

Sirius has done the research. A care-home like this is for people that need extra care. Remus wouldn't put his mum in here if he had any other choice.

"I can't stay for long today, but put me down on the list because I'll be coming back," Sirius insists, standing up. He's going to come back and find Remus. Better yet, Remus will be the emergency contact and he's going to get that number. "Has he been this week?"

Hope nods. "This morning. He looked…" she frowns. "I know you've always looked after my sweetheart. He used to light up at the mention of you - such nice boys, taking my little boy under your wing like that…" she trails off momentarily. "Whatever is wrong, help him, okay? I don't have much money but… but whatever he needs…" She reaches for her purse, but Sirius takes it from her and sets it down.

"I'll help him," Sirius promises. "I don't need your money to do that, Hope." The Lupins have always been a proud family, never admitting when something is wrong. If Hope is asking for his help like this, then it's really bad. "I have to get to work, but I'm here now, okay?"

She nods. "The flowers are beautiful," she comments, reaching for them instead. She looks tired already. He sets the box down on the bed. "I'll let you rest, but I'll come back."

She smiles. "Sweetheart, you can't come here with cakes and not sit and have one with me. Let's have a cupcake each before you go and you can tell me everything I've missed."

Sirius can't turn down that offer, even if Hope seems tired. He's so happy to see her again - Hope always treated him like her own son. Always opened her door to him, no matter what. If Sirius turned up at eleven at night without reason, Hope set up a bed and called his parents and made him a cup of tea and just sat with him until the tears stopped.

She was there for him, and he's going to be sticking around. They eat their cupcakes and Sirius talks, and Hope listens and it's nice to feel that again.

Finally Sirius says his goodbyes. He's found Hope Lupin and that's a good start.

But Remus… Hope has no contact details for him - an address or number. She's worried about him, and he's lying about being back in contact.

Sirius is an expert of reading lies. As he walks out of the room, he considers each one. If Hope doesn't have contact details for Remus, that means that he has no contact details. So no fixed address, perhaps? Lying about being in contact with them means that he's completely alone. Not looking too good… Remus has always had some health issues, and that's what concerns Sirius the most. That Remus hasn't contacted them. He'd have dropped everything to be there for his old friend.

He stops at the counter and looks at the woman.

"Hope's son," he says. "Does he have a phone number?"

"I'm sorry, I can't give out personal—"

"You don't need to tell me what it is," Sirius tells her. "Just confirm if you have one. Or an address."

She stares at him for a long moment, before sighing. "Hope's son…" this woman is clearly struggling, holding something back. "I don't want her to… to know…"

"I knew her son years ago - he's really important to me. If he's in trouble, I just want to help him. Hope was like a mum to me growing up, Remus… do you know where to find him?"

"I don't have any information," the woman says, before lowering her voice. "But… if you go to the bakery on the high-street - Crazy Cupcakes… well, just go get yourself a treat, okay?"

"Does he work there?" Sirius asks quietly.

The woman shakes her head. "Hope is lovely, and they care very much for each other. So if you can help him, help him. He's a nice man, just..." she shakes his head, unwilling to say more.

Sirius nods, thanks the nurse and leaves. He has to get to work, but… no. This is Remus. Remus matters. He calls Kingsley, the assistant manager, and asks Kingsley to get someone to cover his shift for the rest of the week - if possible.

He heads into town, shooting off a text to James that he has a lead.

oxo

It takes a while for the shock to wear off. Sirius had to walk away and come back after he had taken a moment to fully realise that this man, this skin and bones person sitting in the doorway in the alley down the side of the bakery is his Remus.

He had looked around, before asking the girl behind the counter if she knew of anyone who fit the description, but hadn't expected to be pointed towards a homeless man.

Sirius buys two teas and a sausage roll each, along with a chocolate covered doughnut and goes down the alley. He sighs as he looks at the hunched over man who hasn't even reacted to his presence.

"So… what's a Moony like you doing in a place like this?" he asks softly. The man jumped, his gaze shifting up and amber eyes meet his and it's his Remus and for a split moment, everything is alright in the world. There's a flicker of hope, of joy in Remus' eyes, before…

"Go away, Sirius. Let me be."

Sirius sits on the old blanket anyway. "No can do. I got you tea and something to eat. So… wanna talk?"

"Not to you," Remus mutters.

"Ouch. And here you were supposed to fall into my heart and confess your undying love for me."

"Fall into your heart?"

"Heart, arms, same thing," Sirius laughs softly, seeing the hint of a smile on Remus' lips. "Here." He sets the things down. "Just eat, will you?"

"I don't want charity," Remus mutters, yet he reaches for the food first.

"Well, tough. Your mum asked me to look after you, and you know me. I can't disobey your mum."

"Sirius, just leave me alone, okay?"

"Did I… are you mad at me?" Sirius asks. "Is that why…"

"You didn't do anything," Remus confirms, his voice softening slightly. "I'm not mad at you. I just don't want to see you. Actually, I don't want this. This pity, this… you seeing me like this."

"Oh." Sirius stands. "Remus, I can't leave you like this. We're friends."

"We were," Remus murmurs, sounding more broken than Sirius has ever heard in his life.

"We are," Sirius replies, frowning. "And me and James—"

"Don't tell him," Remus says, urgently. "Or Peter. Please."

Sirius hesitates. "Fine, but you're not allowed to disappear on me again."

Remus nods. "Not like I'm going anywhere."

"I'll be back," Sirius threatens, because he's going to make a plan and he's not going to let Remus live out on the street. Even if Hope hadn't asked this of him, he'd help Remus because Remus is the best person in the world. As he stands, leaving everything he had bought, he hears the wrapper of the food. He walks away and makes a plan as he travels home.

He goes home and makes food that won't spoil. He grabs his sleeping bag out of the back of the cupboard and a blanket, and he dresses warm. He brushes his curls into a tight bun, one where they won't get tangled if it's windy.

He glances at the text from Kingsley, confirming that he's found someone to cover, and Sirius shoots off a text explaining that there's been an emergency and he'll be unreachable for a couple of days and to contact James if there's an emergency.

James gets a text too. Sirius doesn't say why though, but he's sure James will realise it's Remus related.

He turns off his lights, sets his alarm, puts his phone away and leaves with all of his stuff. He's got some money on him, but doesn't want to bring anything that would be trouble if it were stolen. If he loses his keys, well, James has a spare set.

oxo

"I brought dinner," Sirius says. He sets the McDonalds down in front of Remus. "Chocolate milkshake."

"I didn't realise you'd be back so soon," Remus grumbles. He looks up at Sirius, who is sorting his stuff next to Remus. "What on Earth are you doing?"

"Come stay with me."

"No," Remus replies.

"Right. Well, then I'm moving in with you for a bit," Sirius retorts, all humour gone from his voice. "There's food in my bag. Bottles of water. You may have to direct me to the nearest loo. I'm happy to cuddle together for warmth."

Remus glares at him, but Sirius just stares firmly back. He doesn't care if Remus has nothing to say to him. He's not doing this for fun - he's doing this to show Remus that he's not going to be alone anymore.

"I'll just leave when you're asleep," Remus threatens after a long moment.

"I'll stay right here night after night, until I find you again," Sirius says, shrugging his shoulders.

"You're an arsehole," Remus mutters.

"I'm a friend," Sirius retorts, maybe a little hurt at the comment, but deciding to let it slide. Remus has had a tough life and he's always been so proud. Clearly too proud to ask his friends for help, rather getting into this bad situation than admitting he needs help.

He reaches for the bag of food and starts to share it out. Remus glares at him the whole time, but reluctantly accepts his share with a quiet "thank you."

oxo

It is cold and Sirius has been shivering for two hours before Remus sighs and moves closer. "I thought you'd give up," he admits softly.

"Why would I ever give up on you?" Sirius asks.

Silence follows. "I wrote to your old address, I thought if I did, the letters would get diverted through the post office. Never heard back. I looked for you so many times. We tried to find you for the big things that happened too. James' son was the one who worked the computer and found your mum and… well, here I am. I've found you now and whatever it is I need to prove to you, I'll do it. If I have to stay out here with you, so be it."

"Don't you have a job to go to? A relationship? A life?" Remus asks. "They matter, not me. I don't need no one."

"Yeah, I do have a job and a life, but you seem under the crazy impression that you don't matter. That you aren't so so high in my list of priorities. You matter, Remus. You've always mattered to me, and I know that if you found me in a situation like this, you'd be right at my side, trying to help. Even if we hadn't seen each other in years. You'd be telling me the same thing - insisting we're still friends, because a friendship like ours never stops. I'm not asking to be your… your sugar daddy or something. Just come and stay with me. I have a sofa. It's warm. There's food and a shower because you really need a shower. I'll help you."

"A fixed address does mean I can get help with money," Remus finally admits. "It takes a few weeks, but…"

"I'll help you," Sirius insists. "Call it all your missed Christmas presents and birthday presents combined. I'll get you clothes and stuff. Help you with everything."

Remus looks a little defeated. "Not as gifts," he finally murmurs. "You'll let me pay you back when I'm on my feet."

"If that's what you want, that's what'll happen," Sirius insists.

"I'll… I'll think about it."

There's a long silence and the minutes pass and Sirius leans back against the wall, his neck hurting a little. He pulls his blanket further around him, shivering more.

"You're going to get sick," Remus finally complains. "Why did you think this was a good idea? Go home."

"I just want to help you. Why won't you let me?"

"Because I have to fix this myself. I can't allow people to clean up my mistakes," Remus admits quietly. Sirius knows from his previous words that Remus is pretty much convinced. He's just reluctant to actually get up and go home with Sirius.

"It's what friends are for. Having each other's backs no matter what. I will be out here every night because I refuse to let you be alone like this."

Remus lets out a long sigh. "Fine. Pack your shit up and let's go. Have you always been this stubborn?"

"You know I have," Sirius replies. He really wants to know what's happened in all these years, but it's a thin thread that he's got, and if he pushes, Remus may change his mind once more. "We're going to have to walk though."

"Fine," Remus says, shrugging. "Lead the way. But I warn you, Sirius… I'm just doing this for a bit of stability so I can get on my feet, okay? I'm not a project or a charity case. I'm paying you back everything."

Sirius lets out a soft sigh. "I'm going to do what I can to help you," he retorts. "I'll try not to go overboard…"

Remus smiles at this. "That'll be a first. From what I remember, you go from Zero to overboard and there's very little in between."

Sirius chuckles. "And I'll be careful of that. It's taken years to find you. I had to recruit the help of an eleven year old because computers and the internet are not my thing. I haven't got the words for how much I've missed you, Remus."

"I've missed you too," Remus admits. "So… James has a kid?"

"Yeah he married Lily Evans."

Remus laughs. "He got what he wanted?"

"James is a jammy sod," Sirius mutters as they walk through the dark. "He's currently… well, you'll see for yourself. He's not with Lily anymore though."

"And you? Married? Kids?"

"Nope. Might not be on the cards for me," Sirius says, avoiding the question because wasn't this search because he's supposed to marry Remus? That's not something he's going to approach for the longest of times because that'll just scare Remus away.

He's going to help Remus, not because he has some expectations from his friend. He's going to forget about that because helping Remus get on his feet and his life back on order is the most important thing.

oxo

Sirius digs through clothes in his drawer, looking for comfortable things for Remus. He pulls out some newish pyjamas and sets them aside, and manages to find a packet of boxers that he's not opened yet.

He's at a loss, because he doesn't want to overdo things here and doesn't know what to do to help.

He walks over to the bathroom and raps on the door. "Clothes outside of the door," he says. "There's spare toiletries underneath the sink - help yourself to whatever you need."

"Got it," Remus calls back and Sirius hears the sound of the shower turning on. He walks away and heads to the kitchen to cook dinner whilst the door opens and Remus grabs the clothes.

He wants to do something amazing. Eighteen year old Remus Lupin loved chocolate, loved home-cooked meals, adored pasta and garlic bread, and by the time Remus is clean, shaven and wearing Sirius' pyjamas, Sirius has pulled a homemade lasagne out of the oven. He doesn't care that it's the middle of the night - Remus is not going to have a single regret in returning.

"That smells good," Remus comments, looking the food over. "You made it?"

"Yeah. I'm a chef," Sirius explains, a little shyly. People have been shocked at finding this out, all assuming that Sirius wasn't the sort to get into cooking, but Remus smiles a beautiful smile his way.

"You know, I can see it," he comments. "I remember you used to constantly talk to my mum about the meals she made and how she did it."

"Right… well, should we sit down? I made extras to put in the freezer so help yourself to whatever is in the house when you're hungry."

Remus manages half a smile and Sirius takes a moment to look him over. Remus is a little taller than him but the clothes just hang off him. There are dark bags under his eyes. He looks terrible, but he's still completely beautiful. Sirius has to drag his gaze away.

"Give it a couple of days and we'll sort out things like registering for the doctor and that. Any chance you have anything like your birth certificate or… whatever you need."

"I left a box of stuff at mum's place," Remus says. "Photos, documents… I didn't want to risk losing them. I… moved around a lot."

Sirius hears the dismissive tone and simply gives a nod. "I made dessert. I wasn't expecting you here, so I'll have to do a bit of tidying and stuff. I'll make space for your things."

"You think I have things?" Remus laughs tiredly.

"You'll have things," Sirius murmurs. "I've got some clothes for now. I'll help till you're back on your feet—"

"I did say—"

"Yes, yes, you'll pay me back. Which means you're going to accept my help without arguing every step of the way. I'll try not to be pushy or overbearing though."

"That'll be a first," Remus mutters, but he smiles and Sirius still finds it beautiful, even after all of these years. He sits down, a little too fast and grabs the cutlery, but Sirius can see that he's trying to hold back as he cuts into the lasagne. "So, a chef?"

"Yeah. Mother and Father were still trying to push me to take a business course. I was still relying on them financially and they were trying to use that to control me. But Dorea helped me find out what help I could get and showed me how to be independent from them. They didn't like it and disowned me."

"It doesn't surprise me either," Remus admits. "They weren't nice people."

"That's an understatement," Sirius murmurs, a smile on his lips as Remus pushes a large forkful of food into his mouth. "I ended up with no clue what to do and took an art course. It was great, but I knew it'd not turn into a career. I took some music lessons too, but again, nothing felt right. I sat down with someone to discuss courses and talked to James and… I found my calling. I love to cook, so expect great meals when I'm here… and frozen left-overs of great meals when I'm on shift. I still draw and play an instrument but those are hobbies. Cooking is my passion."

Remus smiles, swallowing. "I bet your leftovers are also amazing," he replies. "For what it's worth… I'm sorry. It's been twelve years almost. It might not mean anything now, but you guys did nothing wrong."

"That does help," Sirius replies quietly. He's been questioning that for the longest of times. "Any of us would have helped you - we're still here for you."

"Do you… do you think you can ever forgive me?" Remus asks, just as quietly.

Sirius considers it. "It's been painful without you all these years, but I'll forgive you. I've missed you and there's no point being upset or anything. I'm just happy that you're here now."

Remus' smile widens at this.

"And the others are eager for news on you," Sirius continues. "You're back with us, right where you belong."

"I don't deserve this kindness. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop," Remus admits.

"I can't assure you the others will forgive so easily, but I do know that you matter a lot to James and Peter too, and that they'll be happy to see you. We'll be back to normal in no time. As for the other shoe… there's nothing waiting to drop, Remus. You're back with us - where you should be. It's really that simple. Well, as simple as being friends with me could be."

Remus nods, but he's busy eating and Sirius doesn't say anything more. He turns his attention to his own food, eating a little faster than usual in hopes that Remus won't realise that he's rushing his own meal.

He breaks the garlic bread in half and pushes one half towards Remus. Remus gives another slight nod and accepts it.

"It's nice to have someone to talk to," Remus says.

"I feel lonely sometimes, but can't imagine what you've gone through. But you have me now."

"It's awful to feel that lonely," Remus murmurs. "And you have me. I'll do my best so you don't feel lonely either."

oxo

Sirius sighs as he turns over in bed. He insisted over and over for Remus to take the bed, but the sofa pulls out and Remus is stubborn and Sirius got the impression that this was reaching a line and he didn't want to cross that line and scare Remus away.

He gave Remus his own duvet though. It's the thicker of the two he owns, and though Sirius loves the warmth (especially in this cold weather) but he also knows Remus loves wrapping up warm, and that Remus may not have been warm for a long time.

Even though it'll be getting light soon, Sirius finally turns attention to his phone. There's a brief update from Kingsley to say that he's got the whole week covered if Sirius needs it, and also a text from James asking for an update as soon as possible.

'I found Remus. I can't really answer any questions about how or where, but he's good. He's staying here for now.'

The reply is quicker than Sirius expected.

'Can I stop over tomorrow?'

'We haven't slept yet. Give it a couple days?'

'Yeah whatever you both need. Tell him I'm glad he's there and looking forward to catching up. I'm going back to sleep now, your brother is kicking me.'

'Don't talk about being in bed with my brother, you traitor.'

Sirius sets the phone down and snuggles under his own covers. He mentally makes a plan to order another thick duvet, He just needs Remus to not know about it, because he doesn't want it to be something Remus thinks he has to pay Sirius back for.

Maybe he should get that house sooner than planned? Make it a beautiful home, get Remus to have his input and then Remus will never leave him again. Remus will stay forever and all will be right in the world.

He reminds himself that Remus isn't the Remus he fell in love with so many years ago, but his heart refuses to listen to that excuse. People do change, but he can see that this is still his Remus. Yes, this man has had a tough life, but Sirius' love doesn't differentiate.

oxo

Remus wakes up to the smell of bacon. It's been a long time since he's felt so clean, so warm, so full. For a moment, he feels like he's in a dream - a dream of when things made sense in his life. It takes almost a minute of laying on the pullout sofa to realise that it's not a dream after all.

He's in Sirius' flat, on Sirius' sofa.

He doesn't get up. His body hurts a lot these days and this sofa, whilst it's not the best for his back in the long run, it's still so much better than the ground. The duvet is heavy and Remus feels amazing.

He could just close his eyes and go back to sleep, but the curtains aren't doing the best job at keeping the sun out, and the smell of bacon is too tempting.

"Remus?" comes a murmur from the door. There's a pause and he hears Sirius walking away, and Remus smiles. He doesn't deserve Sirius. He disappeared and left Sirius for years, yet Sirius cares this much that he's sought him out and given him somewhere to stay without even needing to think about it.

Sirius is still the most beautiful person inside and out that Remus has ever known (well, aside from his mum of course). So Remus gets up from the sofa and carefully folds the covers and sets them on one side. He's not sure about the mechanism to make the back of the sofa fix up into place, so he leaves that for Sirius, and he heads into the kitchen.

Sirius is just wrapping bacon in foil when Remus comes in. The moment their eyes meet, Sirius offers the most blinding of smiles.

"Sausages and bacon in bread with tons of ketchup, just as you've always loved," he says, gesturing to the food. "Sit down, I'll have some tea for you and some breakfast… or lunch. We really slept in."

"That sounds wonderful," Remus replies. He glances around, spotting the unwashed pan on the hob. Washing up. Yes, he can do that. He can contribute something here. "I'll wash up."

"Don't worry, I'm used to doing all this. Just relax."

Remus hates this. Yes, he's a guest. But he's got nothing else to offer right now. "Sirius," he begins.

Sirius pauses from where he's fixing the sandwiches. His eyes stare into Remus' for the longest of times.

"Used to living alone," he says, pulling his gaze away and smiling widely. Remus knows that Sirius gets what the issue is and is partially relieved that they're not arguing over this. "I'm happy for the help, but not with cooking - if it's anything like it used to be."

Remus laughs. His cooking skills have always been a little joke between them and it just feels normal, natural for this joking to happen.

"Just you wait," Remus jokes, a little nervously because this is real, this is him and Sirius and their banter and a comfort zone he's not sure he deserves. "One taste of my cooking and you'll be signing me up as your head chef."

And then he can almost see the wheels turning in Sirius' head, and Remus is scared that Sirius is going to offer him a job.

Of course he wants a job. He just thinks Sirius has done enough already. He'll never repay Sirius back for all of this.

A voice he doesn't like in the back of his head tells him that the longer it takes to pay Sirius back, the better. It means that Sirius is stuck with him for longer, but Remus doesn't like that voice.

Yes, he likes the idea of being around Sirius for a long time. But not at the expense of his friend. He'll pay back Sirius as much as he can afford once he's got his finances in order. Then when they're on equal footing and Remus can pay his own way, he'll evaluate his next steps.

But for now, he's going to let the care home know that he's got a fixed address because Remus lives in fear that something will happen and they can't contact him. There's a landline in the living room and maybe Sirius wouldn't mind giving them his mobile?

That's step one. There are so many steps to take. Looking for a job, apply for financial help until a job is sorted, getting things in his name so he can build up a credit rating. Contacting the bank and getting the address there sorted. Not that he has money in the bank. Maybe even get a library card. Of course some of these aren't as important right now.

"I have lots to do," Remus begins, as the sandwich is set in front of him. "Maybe going to see my mum before anything." He hesitates. "Would you like to come?"

Sirius' face lights up at the invitation. "How would you feel about us taking her to a fancy dinner?"

Remus stares.

"Look, I know what you're going to say - money - but it's at my restaurant, so…"

"That'll leave you out of pocket," Remus insists. He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. Sirius means well, he knows this.

"A celebration dinner," Sirius says, a little more hesitantly. "James eats there on the cheap too."

Remus nods. "As long as it's not a habit," he says. He wants to say no. That it's already too much. But… the idea of bringing his mum for a nice dinner overshadows that. He'll just order something cheap off the menu and drink water so at least Sirius isn't losing a lot of money from this.

"You're welcome to use the phone if you want to call the carehome and let them know ahead of time," Sirius says. "Use it whenever you need to, okay? This is… I mean, if you want, this is your home now. Okay? Just take what you need."

Home. Remus hasn't had a home for some time. He pushes his chair back, aware of the scraping sound on the floor. Sirius drops his food and stands up, clearly worrying that Remus is going to bolt. He's in a stance as though he's ready to stop Remus, to chase him.

But Remus walks around the table and throws his arms around Sirius and holds him tightly. Sirius doesn't miss a beat and his own arms wrap firmly around Remus too.

"We'll figure out how to make this work," Sirius murmurs. "But I'll never see you back out on the street again, okay? I promise you that."

And Remus knows that Sirius will stick to his word, because Sirius doesn't break his promises. He never says something he doesn't mean. Except, maybe the concept of marrying at thirty. But they were kids when that offer was made.

Remus isn't going to hold him to that, no matter how much he'd love to. Sirius is doing all of this because he's kind, that's all. He's not harbouring secret feelings for the man he found in a doorway in an alley.

They stay like that for a long moment. "I should have had the courage to come here sooner," Remus finally says.

"You're here now," Sirius tells him. "Where you belong."

Remus smiles.

oxo

The early afternoon is spent trawling Primark and some charity shops. Remus tries not to buy much but he has next to nothing. Underwear and socks. A few t-shirts and casual wear. Pyjamas. A new (cheap) suit and a couple of shirts. Remus can buy more shirts once he's secured a job.

He feels sick as he mentally adds the amounts up, but Sirius just takes it in his stride, insisting that these are necessities.

"Get them now," Sirius keeps saying. "You need them." Remus listened, because Sirius is right. He stores the receipt in a wallet Sirius insists on getting him. He makes sure to get himself a notebook and when he gets home, he'll write everything down.

He even mentally notes the cost of the large chocolate box Sirius purchases, insisting it's going to be from both of them. When they're on equal footing, things like that can be allowed to slide - because he'll be able to afford to pay for something for Sirius in return. But right now, their footing is too uneven for Remus to be comfortable to allow much to slide. He's already agreeing to the free dinner.

But he gets to take another shower and helps himself to the toiletries and uses a sponge and appreciates what he has right now. Sirius has given him a home. Sirius is helping him get back on his feet. Sirius cares. This time, Remus won't fail - because failing means failing Sirius too.

He's not going to fail Sirius.

He gets out of the shower and dries off. He quickly tidies up what he's used and heads to Sirius' room where Sirius put his bags.

The room is so Sirius. Even at thirty, Sirius has old band posters on the wall. There are clothes strewn around the room, some over the back of a chair, and a pile of unfolded clothes on top of the dresser. A photo on the bedside table catches his eye and he moves closer to find a picture they took not long before Remus left.

He reaches out. There's a bit of dust on it, so it's not something Sirius took out upon finding Remus - he's had this here for a while at least. That knowledge helps, somehow. Sirius has this picture here. Sirius really cares.

He turns away and heads to his shopping bags. He pulls out some jeans and a belt, having bought a size up. He finds one of the shirts and pulls it on, and takes the tags off a deep-red cardigan that had caught his eye.

He pushes his feet into the converse and looks at himself in the wardrobe mirror. He hardly recognises himself anymore. He looks more alive. Cleaner. Fresher. Like someone who can go out there and get a job. He looks like himself again.

He leaves the room and Sirius is already dressed and waiting. A leather jacket, tight, mouth-watering jeans and clunky boots and he's still the same Sirius, though this Sirius has long hair. His dark curls are pulled back into a bun which Remus finds suits him.

Sirius looks him up and down. "Looking good, Moony," he comments.

"Same to you," Remus retorts. "I'll call the care home and tell them we're leaving. I mean, I could go and get her by myself. I don't want to put you out…"

"Remus, nothing that is happening is 'putting me out' so never worry about that, okay?" Sirius tells him. "I'm here, whatever you want or need. You've got me, and I'll do everything I can to help you. I promise."

"I know. But I don't want to take advantage."

"Luv, you're really not," Sirius insists, grinning and the term of endearment makes him feel like his heart is pounding against his chest. He reminds himself not to get his hopes up. He wants to build up this friendship before anything. He wants to get his life back on track.

Sirius Black was straight, last time he checked. Well, aside from the marriage arrangement they agreed on years ago, but that's not something Remus will think about.

"Okay. Let's go and get Mum then," he says.

"Right. I'll call a cab first, then you call the care-home," Sirius says.

oxo

The woman is at the counter as they arrive. The same one who gave Remus' location to Sirius. She smiles at them both. "Remus and… Mr Black, was it?"

"Sirius." He moves forward and shakes her hand. "Nice to see you again."

She nods, a look of approval on her face. "You too. Hope is ready and she's in the sitting area."

Remus gives the woman a quick smile and starts to lead the way. Sirius follows, noticing that Remus is walking a little faster than usual. He's nervous by the way his hands are moving as he walks.

He stops short, narrowly avoiding bumping into Remus. "Luv?"

"Mum, hi," Remus says, as Hope moves out of the sitting room. She's wearing a long, lemon coloured dress with a cardigan over it and is clutching a purse. She moves a little slowly towards Remus, beaming widely.

"I knew Sirius would take care of you, he's such a lovely young man," she says, before her eyes fall on Sirius. "Family even. He always has been."

"I know. Sirius is amazing," Remus replies. "Are you ready for lunch? Hopefully I can make this a… maybe a monthly thing. Once I'm working again, I can take you out."

"Just seeing you is enough," Hope insists, as she hugs Remus before moving to Sirius. "I am so glad to see you again."

"You'll be seeing a lot of me," he says, with a grin. "You're welcome at my restaurant anytime you fancy a meal. I'll write my number down okay?"

"I'll pop it in your purse later," Remus adds. "You can reach me at Sirius' place."

"Oh, are you moving in together? So sweet." Hope beams at Sirius, wrapping him in a hug too. "I'm glad my boys are together again." She pulls away and Remus holds out the chocolate.

"Oh you're both spoiling me," she says, reaching for the large box. "I'll pop these in my room before I go."

"Allow me," Sirius says, reaching for the box instead. "We've got a cab waiting to take us somewhere nice, Mum."

"I have really missed hearing you call me that," Hope admits, looking so happy in that smile is contagious. "You make sure you leave your number. We don't want to lose touch again. I hope you bring my other boys around soon."

"I'll… do what I can," Sirius says, and Remus can tell there's something Sirius is holding back. Actually, Sirius hasn't really mentioned Peter. He'll have to ask after his other friend when his mum isn't there.

Sirius walks back to Hope's room and Remus starts towards the doors. Sirius passes and gives them a smile before having a word with the woman on the counter. As they get close, Remus hears Sirius reciting his address.

Updating the details, so if anything happens to Hope, at least Remus will know. He leads his mum out and to the cab, looking more and more forward to having this dinner.

oxo

"Oh my goodness," Hope says, looking around. "If I had known it was this fancy, I'd have dressed up a bit more."

"You look utterly beautiful, Hope," Sirius tells her. "Don't you think otherwise."

"This is my favourite cardigan," Hope says, nodding slightly. "You're always the charmer, Sirius Black." She allows Remus to help her to the table, a good one that isn't too far from the ladies' loo.

Everyone rushes around them. Sirius likes to think that he's tough but fair, but his staff are still eager to provide the best service because Sirius rarely sits at one of the tables, he's usually working in the kitchen.

Sirius makes recommendations to Hope, remembering fondly the conversations they used to have whilst she cooked, and Remus orders.

When Hope stands and needs the loo, Sirius gets someone to check the toilet is empty, before Remus escorts her inside. As he waits for their return, he considers where to add a toilet for disabled people, with more space in case they require someone to bring them all the way into the loo.

He'll make space somewhere. Everything in his life will accommodate both Hope and Remus until they are so comfortable, they never leave. Sirius doesn't want anyone to leave. He doesn't want Remus to leave.

oxo

"Got a text from Kingsley asking if you were on a date tonight? Care to explain, Padfoot?"

Sirius wants to laugh. "Not a date," he replies. "Me, Remus and Hope had dinner together to catch up."

"Mmhmm," James replies. "You know what, I'll believe you just because even you wouldn't bring someone's mum along on a date." There's still some hesitation in his voice though as though he suspects that Sirius might actually do that. "What can you tell us about him? When will Remus be comfortable to meet us? Is he okay?" Worry laces James' voice. "We miss him too, you know."

"I know. I haven't told him about Peter yet. Thought I'd give him a couple days. I haven't mentioned who you've married, thought that might be the biggest shock too. I'll talk to Remus and see when he's happy for us all to hang out and we can explain that to him." He turns as Remus comes into the room.

"It's James," he mouths.

Remus hesitates before holding his hand out for the phone. "Hold up, Potter," Sirius says.

Remus' hand shakes as he takes the phone. "Speaker?" he murmurs.

Sirius presses the button and Remus sits on the sofa, Sirius taking a seat at his side.

"James?" Remus finally says.

"Remus, mate," James says, sounding delighted. "I knew you couldn't stay away from us. Looking forward to getting a beer and catching up with you."

Remus relaxes at the friendly tone. "It's good to hear your voice."

"Sirius won't tell me anything, and I won't pry. Just glad you're back, alright? Glad you're around and hope that you'll stay around for a while."

"I'll be sticking around," Remus assures him. "Don't you worry about that."

There's a pause. "Well, good to know. I get Sirius wanting to keep you all to himself for the time being, he's always been so bloody demanding of your attention, but when's good for you?"

Remus looks at Sirius and raises his eyebrows. "I'm good whenever," he admits in a whisper.

"Friday night?" Sirius suggests. "We can order in and you won't have to worry about a takeaway or about Harry going to school the next day."

"Friday it is. Usual time. We'll see you then. Great hearing from you, Remus."

Remus smiles. "And you."

oxo

They fall into a comfortable pattern. Aside from the first night/morning when they went to bed when the sun was coming up and woke up after lunchtime, things became easy.

Sirius wakes up each morning and peeks in at Remus, who is wrapped up cosy. He takes a shower and then puts breakfast on and that's enough to wake Remus. Remus insists on cleaning up afterwards, and then they go about their day.

Remus had gotten the documents from his mum and after some talk, they've decided to switch one of the bills into Remus' name, because so many places ask for a bill as proof of address.

He contacts the jobcentre and asks for help and gets an appointment date. He writes up a CV on Sirius' computer so he can send it out in hopes that he'll be able to find a job. He picks up a form to rejoin the library. He needs id for that too, but Sirius fills out the form and insists Remus can use his card until he can get his own sorted.

It's nice doing these things together. To feel that reassuring smile. The feeling of not being alone. It helps so much. Remus is aware that Sirius will have to go back to work, but that's fine because when Sirius gets home, they can sit and chat and have time together then.

Friday comes and Sirius drops Remus off at the nearby doctor's surgery for his check-up. Remus has a dentist appointment a short distance away too.

He feels like a child when the older woman tells him off for being underweight. When he's told that he's not been taking the best care of his teeth. But he doesn't argue or fight to explain himself past the whole: "I was homeless until recently."

But all the check-ups are complete. He's registered everywhere he can think of, and there's nothing left to do except find a job, and he can do that on the computer at home. It's only a fifteen minute walk into town and to the library. He uses Sirius' card there and collects a couple of books, before heading to Sirius' work.

He sees the motorbike parked out front and smiles, before pushing the door open and heading inside.

"Sirius here?" he asks, glancing around as he approaches Kingsley. The restaurant hasn't opened yet, but Sirius said he had some things to do before it does.

Kingsley nods, grimacing. "Yeah. He's…" he gestures to the far side of the restaurant. "His ex came in and usually when Danny comes in, we've got to deal with our boss in… not the best mood."

Remus turns to where Kingsley is gesturing. He expects Danny to be female and mentally he's picturing someone with light brown hair, a few inches shorter than Sirius. But when he turns, he sees a handsome man, gesturing with his arms as Sirius leans against a table, looking pissed off as hell.

"That's his ex?"

Kingsley gives Remus a sympathetic look. "Yeah. I'd stay here if I were you," he suggests. "Current boyfriend meeting ex boyfriend… things could get ugly. Especially with Sirius meeting your mum and all. Danny saw you guys here the other day. Bitter because Sirius is in a serious relationship."

"Danny doesn't sound very nice," Remus comments quietly.

"Sirius deserves so much better," Kingsley murmurs. "I can already see the change in him. He's mad about you, Remus, so take care of him, okay?"

"Aside from my mum, Sirius is the most important person in my life - he always has been," Remus replies. Kingsley sounds quite protective of Sirius and Remus gets that vibe from the other members of staff here.

He's still reeling from the fact that Sirius dated another man. Glad. So so glad because Sirius isn't as straight as Remus thought and that means that Remus has a chance. He has a chance to be with Sirius one day.

He doesn't approach. He waits. Well, he waits until he sees the way this guy grabs Sirius' arm. Kingsley starts forward, but Remus strides quickly towards the man. He hears the horrible words coming from Danny's lips and sees the mask go up on Sirius' face, though he can see the small things that no one else ever noticed. He can see Sirius' pain and he feels so angry.

Remus isn't a fighter. But living on the street - dealing with other people in the same situation but are volatile, dealing with drunk people who think it entertaining to hassle a homeless man… Remus had to learn to stand up for himself.

And now he's going to protect Sirius from this creep. He storms over and without even thinking about it, he's grabbing this man's arm, twisting it hard and dragging him out of the restaurant.

"Don't come near him again. Do I make myself clear?" Remus spits, shoving him away. He ignores the curses the man shouts after him as he heads back in and locks the door.

Kingsley gives him an approving nod, before stating that he's going to check that the kitchen is ready. Alone now, Remus approaches Sirius.

"Never took you for a fighter, Lupin," Sirius comments quietly.

"Yeah, well, I picked up a few things," Remus comments. "I don't like to fight, but there's no way I'm going to let anyone treat you like that. So if you're mad at me…"

"Mad?" Sirius chuckles softly. "It was hot… nice, I mean. Someone standing up for me like that. You doing that for me. Shitty ex, shitty break-up. Another shitty break-up. Another. Another. We broke up for good a few months ago and I told him to stay away. He doesn't listen."

He reaches out, pushing a strand of hair from Remus' face. "Thank you."

Remus leans into the touch, captivated by Sirius' beautiful grey eyes. "Anytime. We're in this together, and you matter… so much. I'd never let anyone hurt you… hurt you again. If I had stuck around, I'd never have let anyone you dated treat you this way."

"If you were around, maybe I wouldn't have ended up with Danny," Sirius whispers. His fingers are still playing with the strand of hair, his fingers brushing Remus' skin. "Maybe I'd have…" he pauses suddenly, like he realises just what he's doing. "You're really important to me, Remus," he says softly. "You matter so much. But my only priority right now is to help you get on your feet. Anything else… I mean…"

"We have a friendship to re-explore before anything," Remus agrees. His heart is pounding hard against his chest and as much as he doesn't want this moment to end, as much as he wants Sirius to keep looking at him like that, he knows this has to stop.

A relationship now is the worst idea because this relationship is so unbalanced. He owes Sirius too much and he wants this relationship to be equal.

He leans in and Sirius' eyes widen, but Remus' lips only find Sirius' cheek.

"There is no rush, because I am not going anywhere, okay? I'm here now and I'm staying here."

"Please stay," Sirius whispers.

Remus can only think of the moments when a sad and hurt Sirius would come to his house after leaving his own because his parents had been so cruel. The vulnerability in Sirius' eyes, the fear.

He hates his father more and more. For putting his mum in the home, for moving them away. For influencing Remus' fears and doubts about himself.

But he can't blame everything on his father. Remus could have reached out at any time. Those were his own mistakes. His father made him leave. His father didn't like Sirius, his father told him not to contact his friends.

Remus chose to obey rather than reach out, and he's going to fix those mistakes now. No-one will ever hurt Sirius again. No-one will treat him badly, ever even touch him without permission.

And he's not even sure if this moment here is real or not. Maybe Sirius just needs someone, and it's not even Remus.

But no matter what this is - if it's something or nothing, Remus is still going to be there for Sirius because whatever else, whatever more they could become one day, they're friends. And as Sirius' friend, Remus' duty is to protect him.

He has twelve years to make up for, and his number one priority is keeping this Danny bloke away from him because he doesn't treat Sirius well.

Remus finally pulls away, and Sirius offers him a smile. "I didn't get much done," he admits softly. "But I got you a gift."

"Sirius," Remus starts, ready to remind him once more - no gifts.

Sirius grins as he pulls out a keyring. It's a picture that Remus doesn't even remember - one of him and Sirius as teenagers. Remus sitting and Sirius hugging him, leaning over the back of the sofa and wrapping his arms around Remus. "We live together, luv. Here's your key to our home. I also got you a sim card for my old mobile at home. I was going to get you a phone, but… I mean, you'll need it if you're out and about and someone calls about the job. I got a basic plan. A bit of internet and unlimited calls and texts. Really cheap."

Remus can't argue with anything. He does need a phone in case of emergencies. He can't have a go at Sirius who found the cheapest way to help him. He shouldn't moan about everything.

"I appreciate this all, very much. A key to… to our home." He has a home. A home with Sirius. His beautiful, amazing, kind-hearted Sirius. "You know you're stuck with me, right. I'm going to be there forever."

"Is that a threat, because I can't take it as one. Maybe my intention is to have you with me forever."

It's crossing into the something-more-territory again.

"We'll cross that bridge when we come to it," Remus tells him. "Now, why don't you show me around your amazing restaurant whilst I'm here?"

"I'd love to," Sirius says, his face lighting up even more. "I can properly introduce you to everyone."

Remus doesn't mention how Kingsley thinks that he's in a relationship with Sirius. People have thought that in the past, but now he's more aware of how close they've always appeared.

Sirius throws an arm around Remus' shoulders and starts showing him the restaurant. Before they leave, Sirius cooks them lunch. Finally, he picks up a carrier bag with a box inside, though Remus can't work out what that is, and they head back out.

They get home and curl up on the sofa together. It's different this time though. Sirius lays on the sofa, planting his head on Remus' lap, like they used to do when Sirius was a teenager.

Remus laughs and opens one of the books and starts reading. As predicted, Sirius falls asleep after only a couple of hours, and Remus continues reading, fingers stroking through Sirius' hair as he does so.

The moment James sees Remus, he pulls the other man into a hug. "Remus Lupin, it's about time," he says, squeezing tightly before letting go. "You know my husband, Regulus."

"I'm sorry, you're married to who?" Remus blurts out in shock, causing James to laugh. Regulus offers a reserved smile as Remus turns his gaze towards him.

"It's good to see you again," Regulus says, holding his hand out. Remus reaches out to shake it. "And you. I'm sure Sirius' brain exploded when he found out about you two."

"We don't speak of those dark days," Regulus tells him, chuckling slightly.

"Hey, I recognise you. You're the guy who…" the kid speaking trails off, frowning.

Remus takes a small step back. He recognises this boy. This kid has given him food before.

"Who?" James asks, turning.

"Nothing," Harry mutters, aware that he almost blurted out Remus' business.

"Remus, this is Harry - James and Lily's son. Harry, this is our friend, Remus," Sirius hastily offers.

"It's good to meet you," Harry says, but there's a strange tension in the room as James and Regulus frown between the pair, trying to figure out how they've met before.

Remus sighs. He doesn't want this to be awkward, but the only way to clear the air quickly is to tell the truth. He planned on it tonight anyway.

"It's okay," he says to Harry, who is looking a little guilty now. "Until Sirius found me, I was… I was homeless for a few years," he explains. "Your son may recognise me because he's given me food on a few occasions. Sirius has been kind enough to help me out, but I assure you all I'm not taking advantage of his hospitality or generosity. I'm writing everything down as to pay—"

"No-one thinks that," James hastens to tell him. "You should have reached out, Remus. We'd have been here like a shot to help you. But you're here now, and that's what matters. If you need any help and Sirius isn't here, I'll leave you my number too."

"I gave him my old mobile," Sirius says. "I put you both in already, and your mum, James."

"Yeah, she'll be delighted to hear from you," James insists. "Right, I'm going to hang our coats up and—"

"Uncle Pads, can I set up my game in your room?" Harry asks. "Dad and Pops said I could bring it because they thought I might get bored with adult-talk. I mean, I do want to talk to Remus and stuff, but they said it'd be a lot of catching up and you guys explaining… things."

"Go right ahead," Sirius says, with a grin. "I got some cokes in the fridge so help yourself."

"Cool thanks," Harry says, taking the rucksack off his shoulders. He hands his coat to Regulus, slips his shoes off and disappears down the hall.

"Explaining Peter's absence?" Remus asks. "I've been meaning to ask. Did… did something happen? Is he dead?"

"He's alive," James reassures him. "We should sit down and talk about him though."

Sirius gets them each a beer from the kitchen.

"Before you left, you might remember that my brother was in trouble with a gang," Sirius starts.

Remus thinks back, and nods after a moment. "I remember you coming to my house shortly before mum went into the care-home and dad moved us away," he says.

"Me and James tried to help him, we were looking for you, James' mum had a health scare. There was a lot happening and we weren't really keeping an eye on Peter because life was happening. He got mixed up in the gang and it just got worse and worse."

"He got really deep really quickly," Regulus explained. "I was fortunate. With our upbringing, people like me and Sirius know when to stay hidden, when to get the fuck away. So I managed to avoid learning too much about things. Peter knew too much so they made threats and stuff against him, making sure to keep him in line. There was no way out."

James sighs. "He's in prison," he tells Remus. "But I know he misses you too. If you ever want to come with one of us when we visit."

"I'd like that," Remus admits quietly. If he had been there, maybe he'd have seen what was happening. "I should have stayed."

"You couldn't account for what happened, and Peter was involved before you left, but kept it hidden," James tells him. "We've spent years asking what if we did things differently. We asked that when we couldn't find you. When Reg and Peter went to prison. I asked that when Lily left me. Remus, this is where we are right now and we can't change what has happened, only plan for things to come."

"You went to prison too?" Remus asks, glancing at Regulus. He nods. "I didn't get as big a sentence as some. I think my parents pulled some strings, but I wasn't as heavily involved as others. I got out, came to stay with Sirius because I didn't want to go home to Mother and Father, and then had to endure James' company constantly. He had been divorced for about… a year, and he just kept pestering me for a date, as is his style, until I gave up and said yes."

"And he has no regrets."

"I'm married to James Potter. There are some regrets in there," Regulus jokes. The words are offset by the smile he shares with the other man.

"I said they weren't allowed to shag without getting married first," Sirius mutters. "I thought it'd stop them dating, not make them marry each other."

"My dearest brother, do you really think we waited—" Regulus begins, but Sirius' hands are firmly over his ears.

"Why did you leave?" Regulus asks. He rolls his eyes when Sirius glares, removing his hands from his ears.

"You guys deserve to know," Remus assures Sirius, putting a hand on his arm to stop him jumping to Remus' defense. "My dad. I can't blame him for why I stayed away, but he's the reason we left at first. He had his problems and as my mum's health got worse, he lashed out. He put her in a home and… it was like 'out of sight, out of mind' or something. I didn't tell you guys she went into the home because I was ashamed that my dad would do that. If I had… you'd have found her and found me. But…" he sighs. He's been reluctant to share this because it was something else he didn't want Sirius to know, but they deserve this information.

"Dad hated Sirius. He was under this impression that we were dating. That Sirius was the cause of my sexuality."

"I remember, he was always a little strange after you came out," Sirius says, when Remus pauses. "You said he just needed time to process." His eyes widen. "Wait, he thought I turned you gay?"

James smirks at the last words and gives Remus a knowing look and Remus gives him a deadpan look back. Maybe Remus' first crush was Sirius, but James isn't supposed to know about that.

"I think without mum there, there was no-one to remind him to be accepting. But I was his son, so he still tried to take care of me. As long as I stuck by his rules, that is. I came to see you guys, we had that sleep-over and… and I went home the next day in this amazing mood…"

Remus smiles as he remembers waking up cuddled up to Sirius despite Sirius being a few feet away when they fell asleep, before the smile fades once more. "He had already packed up most of the house. He must have worked through the night. He had a flat for us to move into and I couldn't get to contact you. We moved a few times, then he met someone and got married and it was clear I had no place in their lives. I moved back near the area. I should have reached out."

Sirius smiles warmly at him and he smiles back.

"I got a small flat and for a while, I made things work. I kept telling myself that when I'm on my feet properly, I'll find you guys. But I'd lose a job, or have to spend any savings to replace something like the fridge and I was barely scraping by. I Worked two jobs and was so exhausted. I was too proud to come to you all. I used to take the long route to places, passing by things like the old arcade we used to visit and passing that cafe we used to all hang out at because James made us, because Lily got that weekend job there back in the day… I thought if I could bump into you…" he sighs once more. "Then I got ill. A combination of not earning enough to get proper savings, and bad health. I wasn't looking after myself properly and overdoing things, and that messed my health us. I finally lost my flat. I put everything that mattered in a box in my mum's care-home, in her cupboard. Just photos and paperwork and a couple of other bits, and just tried to get help and when that failed… you know where I ended up."

He's aware that Sirius is holding his hand. It's comforting.

"But like you said, there's no point looking back and asking 'what if'. The doctor has given advice, aside from the health issues I've always had… plus needing a good diet after being on the street, my health isn't a massive cause for concern. I can get a job. I can… I can get back on my feet and repay Sirius' kindness."

"Even though I don't expect any repayment," Sirius hastens to add.

Remus chuckles softly. "I don't want you to pay my way. This wouldn't feel… equal… if you continue to do so. I appreciate the help and don't even have the words for how grateful I am for having you in my life and for the help you've given and offering me space in your home."

"Our home," Sirius insists.

"Our… home," Remus corrects himself.

Regulus coughs somewhat pointedly, and the pair turn to where James is smiling smugly between them.

Sirius pulls his hand back. "Shut up, Potter," he mutters. "Mind your business."

"This is my business," James replies. "And it's just as entertaining now as it was back when we were teenagers."

Sirius stands. "Come and help me order the food," he snaps, narrowing his eyes.

"Some things never change," James says, patting Remus on the shoulder on his way past.

"You're still in love with him," James says, as he walks into Sirius' room.

"I'm still in love with him," Sirius groans, closing the door behind them.

"I'm not surprised in the slightest," James comments. "But what is your plan?"

"You heard him. Equals. He's right though. If I made a move now and… how could I know he loves me back? I'd always wonder if part of it was because he thought he owed me something. If he feels that he has to pay me back, I'm going to let him. I don't want him to feel like he owes me anything. When he's stable, in a good place, working… then I'm going to make my move. Confess that I've been in love with him since I was fifteen. That I've not forgotten that silly arrangement we made at fifteen to get married to each other. That I want nothing more than that."

"Being an adult is complicated," Harry mutters, looking up from his game. "Just give him a job at the restaurant."

"Remus wouldn't like that," James comments. "He clearly wants to prove himself and he'll want to get a job himself. But this will work. He knows we'll always be here with him, and we won't let him disappear again. You know where his mum is staying, so…"

"I'm not losing him again," Sirius promises. "Danny came into the restaurant earlier. I stopped by to check up on things. Remus had some appointments and Danny came in. Remus turned up, saw how Danny was acting and he dragged him out of there. It was so fucking hot."

Harry pauses his game and stands up. "I know how these conversations go. I'll be in the kitchen," he says.

"No, it's fine," Sirius replies. "We've got to order food." He leads the way from the room and lowers his voice. "We had a moment after that. Fucking intense. Wish he would've bent me over one of the tables."

James snickers. "I bet," he comments. "But I do approve of him looking out for you like that. Danny was an arsehole and I want you to be happy."

"I've felt happier this last week than I have in… in a long time," Sirius admits quietly. "I'm happy to take this slow, because I already know how much it hurts to lose Remus and won't risk that again. But when we're even, equal, then I'll make my move. I'll spend the rest of my life with him. Marry him. Get him into my bed, get him naked and—"

"I get the picture," James laughs. "I'll let it slide… this time. But start trying to talk about shagging Remus, and I'll tell you what your brother did to me this morning."

"But… I tell you everything," Sirius whines.

"Non-detailed stuff only," James insists. "But only if I can call best man at your wedding."

"This was dropped off yesterday," Sirius tells Remus, revealing an old box. "Do you remember our time capsule?"

Remus laughs in shock because he's not thought about this for years. Not that anything valuable was in there. "You got it?"

"New people moved into the house and I asked if they would get it for me," Sirius explains.

Remus beams at him and James looks between the pair. They've looked at each other like that since they were about fifteen, this utmost devotion. Before Sirius even realised that he was gay, he looked at Remus that way. Remus' feelings for Sirius were obvious to pretty much everyone except Sirius, but Dorea had told James in the past to let them figure it out for themselves.

Sirius was so broken when Remus left. When he searched and knocked on the doors of all the neighbours in case there was an address. He sent letter after letter, hoping that they'd get diverted to Remus' new address and that Remus would write back.

James is scared that Remus will leave again. He did it once, and that's a fear now, but with all the time they've spent talking, that fear is fading bit by bit.

He can see that they're realising how the other is looking at them, and this time around, they have a chance to be together.

"James, come look at this. Remember when we all had those dodgy haircuts for school?" Sirius laughs. He passes the picture over and Regulus laughs at the sight. James grins, but his eyes move to the picture of the four Marauders. Even in these old pictures, their feelings for each other are evident.

He can't wait for them to find their footing and sort this out and finally admit their feelings, because his two friends could be so amazingly happy. And he won't have to worry anymore about the guys Sirius picks up, because none of them deserve Sirius.

Remus may have hurt Sirius by leaving, but there's a future here. He can envision the double-dates. He knows there's a wedding coming one day. Kids maybe. Two grumpy old men retiring together.

If anyone will last, it's them. James is sure of it.

Sirius paces the flat nervously, waiting for Remus to come home. Remus has worked at the library for three months now. Although it doesn't pay brilliantly, Remus is happy and that's all that matters. It's Remus' birthday tomorrow and they'll all be going out and having dinner. But tonight is about him and Remus.

Remus has paid him back the money he believes he owes Sirius, and Sirius only takes it because he wants them to be on equal footing in this relationship, which means that Remus doesn't feel like he owes Sirius a big debt.

Remus comes inside at seven on the dot, pausing at the dinner laid out on the table. He raises his eyebrows. "My birthday isn't until tomorrow."

"I know," Sirius says softly. "But I want to celebrate today. Or… or talk at least. It's a good talk, I hope."

Remus nods. "Two minutes. Let me put my stuff away."

Sirius nods. When Remus leaves the room, Sirius lights candles and flicks the light off, turning the lamp on instead. The room has a nice glow.

"Romantic," Remus comments.

"It's… well, it's supposed to be," Sirius admits. "Remus, I'm planning to move out of the flat."

Remus stares at him, confusion clear on his face. "Does this mean you want me to find my own place?" he asks after a moment.

"No. Of course not, no," Sirius says, clutching Remus' hands in his own. "I have money saved for a house. I always said I'd buy one when I settle down, when me and my partner are looking to have kids. But… circumstances change."

"What's changed?" Remus asks.

"Timing," Sirius insists. "But you choose our next step. Peter gets out of prison next month and needs somewhere to live. I was considering letting him rent the flat. I was thinking of getting that house."

"That'll be good. Peter will feel very supported," Remus comments, still confused.

"I was thinking… I planned to get this house with the person I love. That we'd be parents one day and… well, I think it's clear how I feel about you, Remus. I don't think we've hidden our feelings all that well. So how about it? We make this official and be together? Get a house together? Discuss kids in the future when we're ready?"

Remus answers by stepping forward and doing something he's wanted to do for more than fifteen years. His lips meet Sirius' and they're soft and warm and Sirius' breath catches just before their lips touch. He can feel the stubble on Sirius' jaw and a rough hand slips around the back of his neck.

"This is a yes, right?" Sirius whispers, as they pull away. "Because I was going to give you the first choice on the flat if you want it yourself. Or you can still move with me, even if you don't want me in this way. I was going to say that. I saw a really nice house. Four bedrooms and a dining room. Big garden, near James' place. It has a dining room and a downstairs bathroom. I was thinking… we could turn that room into a bedroom for your mum."

Remus removes his lips from Sirius' neck. "What?"

"A bedroom for your mum," Sirius repeats. "If you want. Or we could put her somewhere nicer. That place is nice, but there's a home just down the road from James' that's much better."

"You'd let my mum live with us?" Remus asks.

"I know she can't manage stairs," Sirius says softly. "The living room is a decent size for us and maybe two children if you want kids, and we don't need a dining room. We can get somewhere smaller if you don't want kids, of course. Whatever you want."

"I can see kids in the future," Remus tells him softly. "Are you sure about this? I have the same condition, Sirius. One day I may need someone to help me. We'd have to get a carer to come in and help my mum daily."

"About this? About us? About a future with you? I've wanted this since I was fifteen years old, Remus. Since before I suggested we get married. I know about your health and I will always look after you."

Remus grins. "I've been wondering for a while if you remembered that proposal."

"I do, and I also remember that you agreed to it," Sirius tells him, smugly. "And tomorrow you turn thirty, so don't be surprised to see me down on one knee." He smirks and leans closer, his lips brushing Remus' ear and making him shiver. "Or both."

"My mum…"

"Will tell you to wait till we're married to have sex." Sirius starts to pull away. "And I'll respect that. I've waited fifteen years, and I'd wait fifteen more for you. Longer even."

"I was going to say that my mum will be delighted that we're together," Remus comments. "Now, let's have this romantic first date because I'm not waiting until tomorrow to have you on your knees."

"You know, the food will keep," Sirius murmurs.

"Food first, then you can charm the pants off me… literally."

Sirius laughs. "I can't wait," he admits. "So, did I spoil the surprise tomorrow?"

"You told me your plans, there's no surprise," Remus snorts.

"Oh well. I'm shit at surprises."

"And I just suck." Remus takes great delight in Sirius' gobsmacked expression at his words. "Now, let's eat dinner. It looks amazing."

The wedding is the smallest event. They of course wait for Peter's freedom and he's more than happy to stand at Remus' side as best man. He's really missed Peter - whilst Sirius and James were off on their schoolyard pranking adventures, he would chill with Peter, and they could talk about real things that the others would find boring, and Remus always missed that.

Lyall Lupin doesn't come to the wedding, and Remus is somewhat glad. He extended the invitation anyway, because despite his life, he loves his father. But the people that matter attend.

James' parents come, as does Remus' mum. James, Harry and Regulus are there of course, and one of Sirius' cousins and her little family. Some old school friends are there, and some of Sirius' staff and a couple of people Hope asked to invite from the care home alongside Hope's new care worker.

Part of Sirius wanted a massive wedding. He wanted people to stop their cars to see what this giant event is - because he wants the world to see that he's marrying the most amazing person in the world. Remus wanted a small wedding. Intimate. Something he could afford to contribute to.

He didn't want to have to share Sirius with strangers for the entire night, and Sirius could appreciate that.

So they say their vows to each other in front of the people that matter. They don't need anyone else. They finally have each other.

So when James and Sirius dance on the dance-floor together for their slow dance which surprises no-one, and Regulus allows Dorea to pull him up, whilst Charlus dances with Hope, Remus finds himself in a seat next to Peter.

"How are you adjusting?" Remus asks.

"It'll take a while," Peter says, smiling as he watches everyone. "You?"

"I'm getting there," Remus says. "I didn't think I'd be here, you know?"

"At yours and Sirius' wedding?" Peter lets out a laugh. "I knew that one day I'd be here. I never expected this journey." He hesitates. "It doesn't bother you that I was locked away?"

"Sometimes people don't make the best choices," Remus replies. "I know you're a good person, and I'm sure we'll find time to sit down and properly talk like we used to. But you're my friend, and I'm here for you - for all of you."

Peter grins. "Thanks," he says. "I'm happy for you. All of you guys. That just leaves me, the only single one in our group."

"But now you've got this whole bad-boy turned good, came out of prison and are looking to turn over a new leaf thing going on. I heard people like that."

Peter laughs. "I never thought of it like that. It's not going to work."

Remus glances around. "A few single girls from Sirius' work. I think they just came to see if he's really marrying a man, but maybe Sirius can introduce you?"

"If you can drag him away from his boyfriend," Peter chuckles.

"I learnt at sixteen that I can't get between their love," Remus jokes. He meets Sirius' gaze across the small room and Sirius' joyful smile turns into something a little more heated.

"Right, this is where I say goodbye," Remus says, standing up. "I think the honeymoon is about to start early."

"Surprised you guys waited this long," Peter replies. "Do you have someone getting your mum home?"

"Dorea is going to stay with her for the week," Remus replies. "But thanks. After we get back, the four of us… like old times."

"Us two trying to convince Sirius and James not to do crazy shit?" Peter laughs. "I can't wait."

"Have I told you recently how much I love you?" Sirius asks. His fingers find the hem of Remus' shirt. He pulls it off slowly, tossing it towards the chair in their hotel room.

"You tell me every chance you get," Remus tells him.

"And yet, it's never going to be enough to express just how deep my love is," Sirius adds.

"I understand," Remus tells him softly. "I love you just as much and I'll make sure to tell you that every day. I love you, Sirius Black."

"Black-Lupin," Sirius murmurs.

"Are we sure we want my name in there?" Remus checks.

Sirius nods. "We can make those surnames mean something good once more. Plus, I have a lot of old school-books with that written on. I'd look really stupid if I got our surname wrong for the last fifteen or so years."

"Well, if it's written on your old school books," Remus agrees, with a laugh. "So… honeymoon tomorrow. Are you going to tell me where?"

Sirius grins as he thinks about the tickets to Rome that were a gift from Dorea and Charlus. "You'll have to wait until we reach the airport," he says. "Let's focus on tonight though. I really want to show my husband how much I love him. I really want to do something I've been thinking about for fifteen years."

"Only if I can show my husband the same," Remus tells him. "Husband. I love saying that."

"Me too, and I'll never ever tire of that word."
