Chapter 20
Sterling walked into the prison facility that Moreau had been sent to after his arrest. His men had handed him over to the FBI as they had jurisdiction above the state for the murders. He had called the FBI lead and had been told where Moreau had been taken to.
"Agent James Sterling, Interpol." Sterling said as he stepped up to the window. "I am here to see Damien Moreau."
The man nodded and pushed a book forward for Sterling to sign and indicated that he should relinquish his weapon if he had one. Sterling filled in the register and then was told to wait somebody would take him through to the interview room where he could meet with the prisoner. Sterling nodded. A few minutes later he was fetched and taken into a room and told to wait.
"Agent Sterling." Moreau said as he was brought into the room five minutes later. "And how is Nathan?"
"Fine." Sterling said and he smiled at the man seeing the consternation on his face.
Moreau stared at him, he had shot the man three times and once before that and still he refused to die. A flash of anger ran across before he schooled his features, well he had a plan for that too he thought.
"What do you want?" He asked the Interpol agent calmly.
"Just wanted to see that you were taken care of Moreau. You will not get out of this one I am afraid." Sterling said softly.
Actually he had just wanted to reassure himself that Moreau was safely behind bars and would not be coming after Nate again, the man had influence and he had been protected by the FBI and other agency previously, which had led to Nate being blackmailed into taking him down and him being locked up in San Lorenzo. This man was a threat. Nate had known that and so did Sterling. If he ever got out again Nate would most likely not be as lucky as he was this time. He had promised Nate that he would make sure that Moreau was taken care of and would never be a threat again and he was going to do just that.
"Well you can leave now." Moreau said turning to the guard. "I want to go back to my cell."
The guard looked at Sterling and then back at Moreau. Sterling nodded and the guard turned to open the door.
"Send Nathan my compliments…" Moreau said as he was led out the door. "Tell him I will ensure he gets something in return for all his efforts."
Sterling watched him leave his words ringing in his ears. What did he mean, what was he planning? No he was playing with him he thought shaking his head slightly. Moreau was secure here and there was no way he was getting out. Sterling walked out of the little room and back to reception where he asked to see the warden. He was once again told to wait and as he stood and waited he called the FBI agent in charge and reassured himself that he had everything under control. He alerted him to the fact that Moreau might be planning something, but the man gave him his assurances that Moreau was not going anywhere. A few minutes later he was led into the warden's offices.
"Agent Sterling what can I do for you?" The warden said as Sterling entered his office.
"Damien Moreau."
"Ah yes one of my more famous prisoners." The warden said smiling at him.
"He may be planning something."
"Why do you say so Agent Sterling?" The warden asked looking at the man intently. He ran a tight ship and he had never had a prison escape on his watch.
"Something he said. I just want to alert you to the possibility and that all precautions should be taken in regards him."
"I see." The warden said nodding at Sterling. "Well let me assure you Agent Sterling that Mr Moreau will not be escaping from here. I will of course heed your warning and ensure my guards are aware that they should take extra precautions with him. Will that suffice?"
"Yes thank you." Sterling smiled at him. He could see the man was a little irritated at the implication that he would allow Moreau to escape and he wanted to soothe the ruffled feathers. "I just wanted to make you aware, I can see you run a good prison here and I am confident that Moreau is secure here."
"Good. Well if that is all?"
"Yes." Sterling said and rising from his seat he shook the man's hand and then opened the door allowing the guard to lead him out of the facility.
Walking to his car he dialled Sophie's number and waited.
"James." Sophie answered after the third ring.
"Sophie how are you, how is Nate?"
"Nate is alright, he woke up and the doctor said if all goes well he will be released in a few days. He was incredibly lucky."
"Yes he was." Sterling agreed. "Are you still at the hospital?"
"No but we are heading back there in about an hour."
"Oh…ok well I am going to go see him, perhaps I will see you there later." Sterling said surprised they had left Nate alone, but then there was no need to have him watched, Moreau was in custody as were all his men so there should be no danger, but still something told him that this was not over, not after meeting with Moreau and hearing his words.
"James is everything alright?" Sophie asked picking up on the man's angst.
"Fine…fine really Sophie, just…well I just went to see Moreau and he said something, but I am sure it is just paranoia on my part." Sterling said.
"What did he say?" Sophie asked sitting more upright and looking at Eliot as she put the phone on speaker.
"Just to send Nate his compliments and that he would send him something for all his efforts." Sterling said quoting the man. "I am sure it was just bravado on his part and nothing to worry about Sophie."
"He said he would send something for his efforts." Eliot said then rose and left without another word. He needed to get to the hospital, and he needed to do it now.
"Eliot…" Sophie said as he stood and left at a run.
"Get to the hospital James…we are on our way." Sophie said as she too stood along with Parker and Hardison and followed Eliot.
By the time they got outside Eliot was gone taking the van. Parker looked around then approached a car before effortlessly getting inside and starting it up. Hardison and Sophie climbed in without question and the young woman stepped on the accelerator pulling off with a squeal of tyres.
Sterling heard Sophie's words and then closed his phone climbing into his car and taking off at some speed in the direction of the hospital.
Eliot had his foot flat as he headed towards the hospital. He had worked for Moreau long enough to know what the man meant by those words. He was sending somebody to take care of Nate, he was sending his compliments and the 'something' he was sending was death. Sterling had just seen the man and he doubted Moreau would be able to get anybody there before he arrived, but for all he knew Moreau had a contingency plan set up in case he failed to kill Nate, just as Nate had had for if he had failed to kill him, in that case Moreau's 'something' might already be in play and Eliot swore softly at that thought willing the van to move faster.
