Spongebob exited his house, "Good morning Bikini Bottom."
He ran over to Squidward's house and started knocking on the door, "Squidward!"
There was no response, "Squidward? Ah well."
He decided to head over to Patrick's house...rock…..Hock? Eh whatever, "Oh Patrick!"
Just like before, there was no response, "Where is everyone?"
Elsewhere
Patrick was sleeping on a chair, "Krabby…..patties..at three A.M."
He woke up and looked around. He was in a talk show room, "Hello?"
John Cena was sitting next to him, "How's it going?"
"What kind of ugly fish are you?"
Another Elsewhere
Squidward was standing on a stage in a theater, "What am I doing here?"
A member of the audience stood in frustration, "Play your music!"
Squidward shrugged, "Alright."
He blew into the clarinet and may God have mercy on the poor souls in that theater.
Back to Spongebob
Spongebob was sitting in a chair, "Ah, Kamp Koral was fun. I should see how the place is going."
I wanted to take a long break from this site to make some more stuff and not feel pressured, but this year has been such a crapfest that I need some escapism.
Between the covid, BLM, and the She-Ra creator shit that I don't want to get into.
Speaking of show creators, let's talk about this little gem of a topic.
On the off chance you don't know what I'm talking about, Nickelodeon has announced three spin-offs to Spongebob Squarepants.
I think, like pretty much everyone except the Nick Execs, that this is total garbage.
The fact that they announced the first one, Kamp Koral, a few months after Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of Spongebob, died.
Hillenburg's stance on the subject was that Spongebob should have no spin-offs. It's possible he could have changed his stance on it, but given how people who knew him personally said that he wouldn't want it, I sincerely doubt it.
I don't want this discussion to just be about that, so I'm going to spend the rest of this talking about why I think these spin-offs are a bad idea.
Let's start with Kamp Koral. The idea of a Spongebob prequel is baffling to me.
Spongebob is not Star Wars. The series is not of a genre that a prequel fits with. Spongebob is pure comedy and making a prequel to a pure comedy is mystifying to me.
With Star Wars, which I'm using as a comparison because of how easy a connection it is to make, it makes sense to tell a story before the original trilogy.
With Spongebob, a prequel is pointless. There are no jokes to be made with a prequel that can't be done in the actual show.
Making Spongebob himself a child is stupid. This is because Spongebob is basically a child in his adult life.
Spongebob in the actual show can do anything. By making him a child, you take away possibilities. This is not up to dispute. As a child, the character is limited.
Also, and this is just a me thing, but I hate it when a title intentionally misspells a word. Starting camp with a K is just obnoxious to me.
Now let's talk about the second one of these spin-offs. It's a talk show with Patrick.
As you can tell from that description, it's pretty lame sounding.
The biggest problem with this is that Patrick is a character who is best when playing off the characters or situation.
By making him a talk show host, you take away his strength as a character. He can't play off the situations in matter that is not doomed to be repetitive.
A talk show is a very limiting environment, some characters can make it work. Patrick is not one of those characters.
Unless you get people who Patrick can play off of very well, this spin-off is doomed to be garbage.
Now let's talk about the last of these spin-offs.
The last one is a Squidward focused one and it's apparently going to be a musical.
We don't have much information on this one other than the fact it's going to be a musical.
However, that is all we need to know to predict how bad it's gonna be.
Squidward's thing is that he's a terrible musician, so this premise is already kinda effie.
There are two possibilities. The show's gonna be about how Squidward became who he is, which will be kind of depressing honestly.
The second one is one that ignores the actual show completely and is about Squidward becoming a good musician.
Either way, it doesn't look good. It'll either be depressing, which doesn't work with Spongebob or non-canon to the actual show.
Now, let's talk about a major problem with all these spin-offs.
Franchise Fatigue is a real thing and if Nickelodeon airs all of these at the same time, it's gonna hit people hard.
One spin-off, Hillenburg stuff aside, would be understandable, but three of these things? That's just too much.
It's just gonna lead to problems and the fact that Nickelodeon doesn't see the problem with these spin-offs is worrying.
