"So Jeanine," Kevin puts down his fork, deciding to strike up a conversation. "Any boys? I mean you are simply gorgeous so you must be breaking all the boys hearts."

Jeanine chokes and Andrew bursts out laughing. Carrie pats Jeanine on the back and rolls her eyes. "Kevin, don't be ridiculous. I swear it's like you don't even live in this house sometimes."

Kevin looks quizzically at his wife before his eyes widen in realization. "OH! You're… Right! Yeah… Sorry… I must have forgotten." He points at her. "Gay… right." He scratches his head awkwardly.

"It's okay." Jeanine picks at her food, feeling awkward since she knows exactly what he will ask next.

Kevin grins before leaving forward. "Any girls then?" he asks, raising an eyebrow.

Carrie rolls her eyes again.

"Ummm…. No." Jeanine takes a sip of Erudite soda in a futile attempt to hide her blush and awkwardness.

"Hmmm? Sure thing." Kevin says, spotting how awkward she looks.

"Kevin. Leave the poor girl alone." Carrie commands.

"Whatever." Kevin murmurs.

Andew's mind races with thoughts. Why wouldn't she tell him if there is someone? It doesn't make any sense to him.

They finish dinner and the two teenagers are forced into a movie night. Kevin and Andrew are sprawled out on the floor next to each other, Kevin tickling his son and Andrew squealing. Jeanine started out stiffly sat next to Carrie on the sofa but gradually relaxed as the movie went on. Halfway through, Carrie has finally managed to relax the girl fully by pulling her close to her. Jeanine feels oddly relaxed in the arms of her mother's best friend. Carrie is the closest she has had to a mother since her parents died. They technically adopted her but have never forced Jeanine to consider them as parents.

"I love you Jeanine," Carrie whispers, running her fingers through Jeanine's blonde hair. "Like my own daughter. You can tell me anything. I promise. When you are ready to talk about this mystery girl, I'll be here."

Tears fill Jeanine's grey eyes, for two reasons. Jeanine nods. "Thank you." she whispers back. She can't tell her, but it's sweet that she is willing to be there. It's more than her own mother ever did.

The two boys remain completely unaware of the conversation the two girls just had. Kevin is busy teasing Andrew and Andrew is too distracted by both his father and the movie.

Carrie notices the tears in Jeanine's eyes and wipes the few that escaped with her thumb. "Come on," She sits up. "Let's go get you cleared up before Kevin asks what is going on with us two."

Jeanine nods. Carrie stands and offers Jeanine her outstretched hand. Jeanine takes it and Carrie leads her into the bathroom.

Jeanine perches herself on the side of the bath as she watches Carrie run a towel under the tap. Carrie squeezes the towel to ensure that water doesn't drip everywhere. When she is sure that the towel isn't dripping wet, she closes the small amount of space between her and her adoptive daughter. She pats the towel around Jeanine's eyes, attempting to get rid of the small amount of smudged mascara.

"Whoever it is," Carrie says. "They are, or would be, lucky to have you. You are so intelligent and pretty Jeanine, I mean that." She looks at her and sighs a little. "I wish I could be the perfect mother for you." she admits.

Jeanine takes her arm, forcing her to stop and look her in the eyes. "You already are." The blonde almost can't believe that she just said that, despite knowing that it is true. It isn't easy for her to open up but she has been living with Andrew's parents for years now and has known them all her life. It shouldn't be this hard.

It's Carrie's turn to cry as she pulls Jeanine in for a hug, resting her chin on her head. They stay like that for what feels like forever.
