Jeanine heads out about half an hour later.
"Where are you going?" Kevin stops her at the door.
"Out." Jeanine tries to push past him but he doesn't move.
"Well it's getting late, young lady."
"For God's sake Kevin!" Carrie shouts from the kitchen. "It's only six and Andrew went out not that long ago!"
Kevin eyes Jeanine suspiciously just as Andrew had done earlier today. Like father like son. "Fine," He steps aside. "Don't stay out too late."
"Thanks and I won't." Jeanine smiles before all but running out of the door.
She strolls down the streets of Chicago. Picking up her pace when she spots a group of Dauntless boys.
Eventually, she reaches the deserted street that Evelyn told her to meet her on. Her eyes rake the run down area and spot Evelyn almost immediately. She waves before running over. She pulls Evelyn close to her and plants a chaste kiss on her lips in greeting.
"Hey." Evelyn whispers when they pull away.
"Hey." Jeanine releases her.
"How are you?" Evelyn asks.
"Alright."
"Yeah, me too."
Jeanine awkwardly nods. There is a weird feeling in the air tonight and neither really knows what it is.
"Carrie is on to me and Andrew won't shut up about it." Jeanine blurts out. She has no idea why she told Evelyn that, it will only stress her out, but it was just so awkward that she had to do something.
"On to you?"
"They know I have feelings for someone that I won't tell them about."
"Oh…"
"Evelyn, what's wrong? What's up with you today?" Jeanine asks, growing concerned by how her girlfriend is acting.
"It's nothing Jean." Evelyn tries to convince the anxious girl.
Jeanine shakes her head, "It isn't."
Evelyn turns away and puts her face in her hands, letting tears fall. She takes a deep breath before spinning back around. "I don't know how to do this." she confesses.
"How to do what?"
"This! Everything! Jeanine, you can conquer the world. You will be amazing. Why are you wasting your time on me?"
"I'm not wasting my time…" Jeanine tries to reach out for Evelyn but Evelyn backs away. "E-Evelyn?"
"I can't do this anymore Jeanine." She stares at her with tears in her eyes. "I love you…" She takes a deep breath. "Which is why I need to let you go."
Jeanine feels her heart shatter into a million pieces. She shakes her head, her bottom lip trembling. "No- No you don't! I love you too Evelyn! Please! I'm not wasting my time… Don't leave me." The last words are whispered, a desperate plea that she can't bring herself to say too loud.
"I'm sorry Jeanine… I need to do this. For you and me." She places one last kiss on Jeanine's cheek before walking away, tears tumbling down her cheeks.
