Kagome stared silently at the now sleeping boy across the room. She blew gently on the cup of tea in her hands as she looked over a few cuts and bruises. She figured out the cause of his injuries, it was easy enough to figure out when she'd witnessed his temper. He had caused them himself through his own recklessness, though...she was still unsure of what had caused him to become so enraged and heartbroken.

Glancing over his sleeping form she sighed; at the moment, she was just happy he was asleep. He'd cried on her shoulder without explaining anything for almost an hour before he'd passed out. She'd tucked him into her bed and sat down to some of the tea that was left in the tea kettle.

Thinking over the pain that had been so clearly sketched within his eyes and on his face, she recalled her own being quite similar not too long ago. "Thinking back on it...I did the same thing as him..."

~FLASHBACK~

"NARAKU~!"

Naraku turned a cruel, sinister smirk to the tearful Kagome Higurashi. At fifteen years old, she was struck with a horrible fear in the pit of her stomach as she watched the massacre before her eyes take place. Her family from the past brutally murdered...the advantage was never theirs, and they had been so foolish to think they stood a chance.

"Miko...give me the Shikon...I might let you live."

"You 'might', just like how you let Kikyou live for selling us out? Or perhaps how you let Sango's brother live if she dropped her weapon?! You are so full of yourself! You won't let me live...and even if you did...what's left to live for!?" Everyone was dead...everyone...except those who hadn't made it into the barrier...those Naraku deemed dangerous, a threat. Yes, Sesshoumaru was left out of the fight and had been paralyzed by something akin to a collar for demons. Even the Great Demon Lord Sesshoumaru was brought down to his knees, though, he was ignored for the most part.

"Good point; I'll kill you now and take it from your bloodied corpse."

Kagome watched him shoot forward, closing her eyes in fear, she waited for her death, and knew it was coming...or so she'd thought. The pain that ripped through her body had been caused by one of his many tentacles, but as it pierced her flesh, her body had begun to purify it...and him. 'No way...' the barrier around the battlefield fell and she cried desperately, "Why couldn't you have tried to kill me first...why them...why!" She punched the ground hatefully, hurt and torn apart on the inside. She stared at her fallen comrades and screamed.

"Miko!"

Turning, slowly, she stood. Her hand moved almost instantly to her injury as she made her way to Naraku, picking up the remaining shards of the jewel before turning as she looked for the familiar voice. Sesshoumaru lay on the ground at the outskirts of the blood stained trench. "Sessh...Sesshoumaru..." She fell to her knees before him, placing her fingers on the collar, she easily took it off; it only seemed to react negatively to demonic energies. "...it's over..."

Sesshoumaru sat up and rubbed his neck with his clawed hands as he glanced over the blood tinged ground. "This Sesshoumaru is regretful that he could not be of any use to you and your traveling companions."

She shook her head, "Not your fault...not even your battle...it was ours from the beginning. We lost...sadly...but it's all over now."

"...you are glowing Miko..."

Kagome looked down at her hand which clutched the now completed Jewel, her tears continued to fall. "Goodbye, Lord Sesshoumaru..."

"...Miko..."

~End~Flashback~

'What a horrible memory...' Her eyes were closed as she thought of the painful events which had led to her leaving her mother, grandfather and brother, and finding herself a new home out in the forest away from civilization.

She'd climbed to the top of a mountain to search for a new abode to which she could live peacefully, and had been doing a wonderful job thus far. In fact, it had been almost a year since she had found her little hide away from reality. No TV, no radio, no newspaper. She didn't want to be updated on the harsh truths of the world...she'd seen how ugly it could get, and she was done with it.

"...I guess...he can stay for as long as he needs, but I can't let him die for sure." Standing, Kagome walked to the boys' side and gave a sad smile, "Too much death as is...you are too young, and have too much life left to live to give up so soon..." she tucked him in at the sides before moving to her couch where she'd pulled out a spare wool blanket ans a pillow for herself. Closing her eyes, sleep came to her with more bloodied images dug up from the past.
