As soon that they left Dinky and Boomer, Tod and Lily spotted a butterfly that flew out of a grass and it flew in front of Tod.

Tod looked at it with curiosity before he chased around and play with it.

Lily smiled at this before she walked toward the hunter's fence and sat beside before she opened her sketch book and started sketching.

Meanwhile over at Amos Slade's home, old Chief and Copper who's now a puppy were drinking water from their bowl.

Copper popped his head up and started sniffing the air.

This scent is a new sent for him that he started to follow the scent.

Chief saw Copper sniffing the air.

"Hey, there, Copper", said the old dog. "Whatcha sniffing at?"

Copper continued sniffing as he replied, "Something...I've never smell before, Chief."

"Huh, let me see", Chief said before he walked beside the hound puppy.

He sniffed the air and then inhaled the air.

"Oh, chucks, that's easy", Chief said to Copper. "The master is just cooking grits and fatback. You oughta know that".

Resisting and knowing this scent is different, Copper shook his head.

"Mm-mmm. That's not what I smell", he said. "I don't know, Chief. It's something else".

Chief chuckled in amusement as he went into his barrel for a rest.

"Sonny, you've got a lot of learning to do about the sniffing and the smelling, heh", he said and he saw Copper starting to wander off as he continued sniffing the scent. "Hey, where are you going?"

Copper turned to Chief. "I wanna find out what that smell is".

"Okay, Copper, but the master ain't going to like you wandering off", Chief warned Copper who smile in an assure way.

"I won't get lost, Chief", Copper said. "I can smell on my way back".

Chief watched Copper wandering off into a woods when the scent is leading him to as he sniffing the ground.

The old dog lied down on a ground as he said to himself. "Heh, can't tell he's young, whippersnapper, anything".

Meanwhile in a woods, Tod continued playing with the butterfly and followed it into a log before he climbed over it while Lily stayed at her spot by the fence sketching Tod playing with the butterfly in her sketchbook .

Lily thought she heard something sniffing as she looked up from her artwork and saw a hound puppy sniffing the ground and passed under the fence. "Hmm?"

Copper sniffed his way toward Lily and as he was close to her, he sniffed her dress, climbed onto her lab and sniffed her chest and at her face before he looked up at her.

"Hello there, little one", Lily greeted the hound puppy with a smile as she picked him up. "Where did you come from? My name is Lily".

Copper smiled cutely at the human girl and gave her a lick on her cheek when made her giggle.

Just as Lily put him down, Copper began to sniff the scent again and followed it into the woods.

Lily tilted her head wondering what the puppy is sniffing his way to and followed him into the woods.

Copper continued sniffing the ground as he walked into a log where Tod is on top of it.

Tod heard something sniffing underneath him and placed his ear onto a hold before a nose was poking up from it which made Tod jump and sniffed the nose.

Lily stopped, sat by the log and observed on what going on as Tod hanged his head upside down in front of the other side of the log and saw a hound puppy sniffing.

"What are you smelling?", Tod asked the hound puppy.

"I'm on the trail of something", Copper replied and sniffing at the same time.

Tod tilted his head. "Trail of what?"

Copper shook his head and answered, "I don't know yet".

As Copper made his way out on the other side, he sniff is way toward Tod and found the scent.

"Why, its...its you!", Copper realised before he let out his little howl.

Lily covered her mouth as she squeed softly at his cute howl.

Tod climbed down from the log and turned to Copper as he asked, "What do you do that for?"

"We're supposed to do that while we find what we've been tracking", Copper explained with a smile.

"I'm a fox!, Tod said and introduced himself. "My name's Tod. What's your name, kid?"

Copper hopped over to Tod wagged his tail happily.
"Mine's Copper! I'm a hound dog!", he introduced to himself.

Lily watched Tod and Copper interacted with each other with an amazed smiled at the sight of it.

"Gee, I bet you've be good at playing hide and seek", said Tod. "Wanna try, Copper?"

"Can I use my nose?", Copper asked.

Tod laughed and stated to get ready to hide. "Oh, sure. Okay, now, go ahead. Close your eyes and count."

Copper nodded and placed his face on a wood, closed his eyes and started counting.

"One, two, three...", Copper counted but started to peek over his shoulder to see Tod who saw him peeking.

"No, Copper! You can't peek!"

"Oh!", Copper realized the rule about not peeking.

"Now, start again", said Tod.

"One, two, three, four, five, six, seven...", Copper counted while Tod ran to find a hiding place before he found a short tree stump and curled himself up on to it.

Copper stated sniffing the ground finding where Tod is hiding.

Lily sat on a ground and continued watching a moment between a fox cup and a hound puppy playing hide and seek together while smiling warmly.

At the same time, Big Mama witnessed the whole thing from on top of a tree and was surprised to see two animal who were supposed to be enemies playing with each other.

"My, my. Look at that", she said. "A fox and a hound playing together."

Copper sniffed the ground until his not lead to a tree stump and saw Tod hiding behind his tail.
Copper found Tod who jumped off of the stump, ran around for a bit he hides into bushes as Copper sniffed the ground to find Tod.

Tod peeked over the bush, watched Copper sniffing Tod's around the ground and sniffed a tree.
As Copper started sniffing the ground again, Tod walked very slowing behind him.
Copper stopped sniffing and thought that there's something behind him.

He turned around and saw that Tod was behind him which made them both jumped and rolled on a ground laughing enjoying the game which made Lily giggled softly admiring their playfulness.

Big Mama continued watching over Tod and Copper playing as she sang;

"When you're the best of friends

Having so much fun together

Your not even aware your such a funny pair

Your the best of friends

Life's a happy game

You could clown around forever

Neither one of you sees the national boundaries

Life's one happy game".

But then, Copper's owner Amos Slade called him from his home.

"Copper!", Amos shouted before he whistled to him to come back.

As he and Tod were playing, Copper heard his owned calling and immediately started to run back to his place as he said "Oh, geez! I gotta go!"

Tod and Lily watched him racing back to Amos and Chief.

Lily gasped softly started to realize that Copper belongs to her very nasty neighbor who doesn't get along with her and her grandmother and who is a hunter that trained his old dog to hunt down animals.

Lily also realized the fox cub and the hound puppy are natural enemies who are supposed to hate each other but they're not really aware about that.

Copper returned home and smiled at Amos but his owned pointed his finger at Copper barrel ordered the hound puppy to stay in there.

Copper stopped smiling as he walked back into his barrel and sat there before he looked up at Amos gave him a firm look which made the puppy looked down from him.

Copper turned to Chief who gave him a look as if he's telling him 'I've warned you about not wondering off'.

Copper looked away from Chief and lied on a ground sadly as Big Mama sang;

"If only the world wouldn't get in the way

If only people would just let you play

They say you're both being fools

Your breaking all the rules

They can't understand

they magic of your wonderland".

The next day, Tod and Lily with her sketchbook bag ran over to the hunter's fence and looked over to Copper's barrel next to Chief's who was asleep.

"Copper!", Tod called to his new friend who answered his call and walked out of his barrel and smiled as he saw his new friend Tod with the human girl by his side waiting for him to come and play.

He was about to go to them only to stopped by Chief's loud snores and he looked at the two again worried that he'll get in trouble.

"Come on, Copper!", Tod said with a smile.

"Its okay", Lily assured the hound puppy.

Copper tiptoed passed Chief who remained sleeping as he continued snoring.

Knowing that its okay, Copper ran toward Tod and Lily as Big Mama finished her song;

"When you're the best of friends

Sharing all that you discover

When these moments have passed, will their friendship last?

Who can't say?

There's a way

Oh, I hope

I hope it never ends

Cause you're the best of friends".

Tod and Copper rolled around and ran into the small woods together as Lily followed them.

At almost afternoon, Tod and Copper played with each other by Lily's knees who was petting them happy for their friendship and that Copper is now her new friend

"Copper, you're our very best friend", Tod told Copper who smiled.

"And you two are mine too, Tod", Copper replied.

"And we'll all always be friends forever, won't we?", Tod asked.

"Yeah, forever!", Copper promised.

Lily smiled and her heart melted as she understood that they promised to be friends forever despite that she knew that it won't last long.

But trying to get that out of her head, she wrapped her around Tod and Copper and placed her pale forehead gently on their heads and promised as well.

"Yeah, friends forever", she said softly.
