Just a quick little silly something based on a prompt posted by Sarah (catsballeths) on twitter
Rachel's screams reached Donna long before she came bounding into her office, bouncy on her heels and eyes wide on her face, waving a glossy magazine at her.
"Donna!" she squealed. "How could you have not told me!" Rachel all but yelled, consumed by her, as yet unexplained, jubilation.
"Told you what? What has got into you Rach?"
"You and Harvey!" she shrieked again, thrusting the open magazine under Donna's nose.
"Me and Harvey what?" she asked, thoroughly confused. "Rachel, honey what are you…." but Donna's words suddenly got stuck in her throat as she caught sight of what Rachel was pointing at.
'Previously one of New York City's most eligible bachelors, Harvey Specter is now off the market, and it looks like he will be for good, judging by just how smitten he is with girlfriend and firm COO, Donna Paulsen.'
"Oh my god!" Donna gasped, ripping the magazine out of Rachel's hands. She read the sentence again, certain she had been mistaken. "What the hell is this?"
"It's Harvey's interview for that magazine."
"I know what it is, but why on earth does it say I'm Harvey's girlfriend!"
"You mean it's not true?" Disappointment coloured Rachel's tone.
"Of course it's not true," Donna snapped, taking her sudden swell of confusion and anger out on Rachel. "Sorry," she said glancing up at her, "I just…I don't…." she was speechless in a way that very rarely happened to her.
"Why would they write that if it's not true?"
"That's exactly what I'm going to find out," Donna growled, snatching up the magazine and marching herself straight next door to Harvey's office.
Flinging open his glass door she was annoyed to discover he wasn't at his desk. She tossed the magazine down on his desk as she stalked back and forth across his office floor, her mind a swirling mess of thoughts.
Donna couldn't even begin to understand why the magazine would state she and Harvey were in a relationship. Harvey had been interviewed as part of a feature they were running on the top legal minds in the city. It made no sense for her name to have even come up.
She also can't understand why such an accusation made her feel so angry. God knows it wasn't the first time someone had made an inaccurate assumption about the nature of their relationship. But this was different, this was in print, in newsstands across the city. Her friends and family would read it. Donna groaned out loud as she imagined the impending phone call from her parents.
The last few months things had felt a little strained and awkward between her and Harvey as they tried to move on from all that had happened. Paula, the kiss, her brief resignation. But in recent weeks they had finally seemed to be finding their way back to normal.
Donna had missed her friend, missed their closeness and the ease they had around each other. So she had pushed aside any thoughts of more, in exchange for their version of normal. This article, and the absurd assumption they had made, had the potential to drag their relationship straight back into the awkwardness Donna had worked so hard to move on from.
She soon gave up with her pacing, instead perching herself on the edge of Harvey's desk to wait. She glared at the offending magazine sitting on his desk while she waited, fighting against her curiosity to see what else they had written, until she was unable to resist any longer.
Donna flipped back to the article and was immediately struck by the photo that accompanied the story. It was a black and white shot of Harvey staring out his office window, holding one of his basketballs and appearing deep in thought. She'd seen him in that pose a hundred times before. Usually while she was sitting on his couch, glass of scotch in her hand, as they worked through the latest challenge the firm was facing. She may have still been simmering with anger at having been blindsided in a way she never expected, but Donna couldn't help but appreciate how handsome Harvey looked. Something stirred down low in her belly the more she looked at the picture.
Then she read. And she was everywhere. Harvey had mentioned her so many times, it almost felt as though the article was about herself. And the things he had said about her, he was so full of praise and admiration, not just for her professional accomplishments, but also simply just for her.
Sentences and words kept jumping out at Donna from the pages, as she felt herself become speechless for the second time that day, this time for an entirely different reason.
"...I wouldn't be half the lawyer I am today without Donna…"
"She is very special…"
"An amazing COO"
"...irreplaceable…...most important person in my life..."
"Harvey calls Donna his compass…"
By the time Donna had finished the last paragraph tears clouded her vision and a heavy lump was stuck in her throat.
That damn man, she couldn't help but think, shaking her head. The whole article almost read like a love letter, and she had never been more confused in her life. Here Harvey was pouring himself out to some journalist, probably without even realising, when all Donna had ever wanted was for him to be that open and honest with her for once.
She felt overcome with emotion, the anger had now well and truly dissipated, replaced instead by something that felt a little like awe, mixed with a heavy dose of confusion and touch of what could only be called hope.
Spotting Harvey finally returning to his office Donna pulled in a deep breath, swiping away the tears that had gathered in her eyelashes.
"Donna," Harvey greeted her warily as he entered the office. She dangled the magazine between her fingers as he walked in.
"Looks like I have such a terrible boyfriend, he didn't even tell me we were dating."
She caught the flash of guilt on his face as he realised the reason she had been waiting for him.
"Something you forgot to tell me?" She asked, tilting her head at him.
Harvey was suddenly stumbling over his words in his rush to try and explain.
"I don't know why they wrote that, I never said we were dating, I swear Donna." He ran his hand through his hair, Donna recognising the nervous trait. "They must have made an assumption, for some reason. I'll call them right now. Make them publish a retraction."
"Harvey stop," Donna held up her hand, "It's ok."
He looked at her in surprise, "I thought you'd be mad."
"I was at first," she said, slipping off the edge of his desk and taking a step towards him as Harvey watched her closely. "Then I read it." He pulled in a sharp breath in response.
"I mean, I could see why they might be confused." The corner of Donna's lip twitched up in a small smile. "You said some really lovely things Harvey," she said softly.
His eyes locked with hers, trapping her in his gaze. Donna felt the pressure in the room building, as though the atmosphere sensed the tipping point they had suddenly found themselves in. The silence held for a moment, Donna feeling her heart begin to thunder in her chest, until Harvey said, "I meant them." His voice was deep and low as it washed over her.
"Why did you talk about me so much Harvey?" she asked, barely above a whisper.
Harvey glanced away, letting out a lengthy breath before he looked back at her. He seemed almost nervous. "Because, we've always been a team," he shrugged his shoulders lightly, as though the answer was obvious. "There's no me without you, I've told you that before."
He had said it before, although never quite like that. It felt different to Donna this time. It felt like he was meaning something more.
Harvey's eyes were penetrating into her as he spoke again. "I couldn't have done any of this without you."
"Any of what?"
"Everything."
Donna felt her body begin to tremble as she took in the way Harvey was looking at her, like he never had before. Like he had truly just realised she was indeed his everything. Donna took another step forward, further closing the gap between them. Without meaning her glance fell to Harvey's lips, watching as he unconsciously wet them with his tongue in response. Heat flamed along her spine.
"Maybe they weren't wrong Harvey," she breathed, moving closer again until there was barely an inch of space between them. She could feel the heat of his body, the charge of electricity that always sparked when they were this close to each other. "Maybe we're the ones that can't see the truth?" Her voice wavered as she spoke and Donna felt a bolt of fear at having set the words free.
But then Harvey's lips crashed into hers, his hands wrapping around her body to press her against him. His mouth moved hotly over hers, tongue parting the seam of her lips to slip inside. Donna moaned softly as she met his tongue with her own, opening into the kiss. They lost themselves in the kiss, pouring themselves into each other as if making up for so much lost time. Donna soaked in the feeling of Harvey's lips and hands on her body, and the relief at knowing that this time it wasn't a mistake. This time this was exactly where they were meant to be.
They kissed until they had to pull back, gasping for a breath. Harvey cupped her cheeks in his palms, continuing to press several more soft kisses to her lips, as though he was unable to stop.
"I don't think we need to worry about that retraction after all," Donna murmured, grinning against his lips.
"On the contrary, I'm going to send them one hell of a thank gift," Harvey smirked, before settling his lips over hers once more.
Thank you for reading, as always I would love to hear your thoughts and reviews!
