That next day, Skylar decided to lead Rascal, Nathan, and Daniel all to see Bentley. Rascal has already seen Bentley, but never actually talked to him. The gang planned on possibly getting the time machine at least running that day, but nobody really knew what was going to happen.
"Here it is." Skylar motioned the group to the lab's front door, curiously a small wooden door painted white. She ran the ominous doorbell, with a familiar turtle answering shortly after.
"Can I help you?"
Skylar smiled. "Bentley, it's so nice to see you. I brought my family over so we can figure out this time thing together."
Bentley examined each member and raised an eyebrow. "I thought it was just you, Rascal, and Daniel."
Nathan narrowed his eyes. "Not me?"
Bentley blushed in embarrassment. "Well, I don't really…you know what you all just come inside. I'll get my time machine ready here shortly."
The gang followed the turtle into a lab that appeared to be straight out of the future. Beakers of samples varying color covered the black shelves across the walls. The whole floor was white tile along with white tiled walls. The gang felt almost blinded from how much white there was in just that lab alone.
Bentley wheeled back over to his couch. "So, before I show you the machine, I need to talk to you all." The group nodded silently. "So, Skylar mentioned to me about a girl named Penelope helping you, is that true?"
"Yes." Daniel spoke up. "She's been helping Rascal more than anybody. Rascal is the smart one. She's been building a machine that can have a person manually enter what time they want to go to. She mentioned the last machine she worked with you had to place an object from that era into it."
Bentley narrowed his eyes. "That would be my machine. Anyway, I would be more than happy to help you, but I'd rather you use my machine." Bentley was afraid deep down that this was a trap, and if it wasn't it was an indirect approach by Penelope to get Bentley. He wanted to help them so badly though. He was willing to try anything to get Sly back at this point, and he didn't really care about what it would take. He just wished Carmelita still had been there. She, in his opinion, probably knows a whole lot more about the case than Bentley could ever imagine. Without her, this was a challenge for him.
Nathan smiled. "So, we can see our Sly again?"
Bentley tapped his chin. "I will certainly try, but I need you all to let me think here for a moment. I need to formulate a plan."
Rascal laughed as a response. "I have a plan."
Bentley blushed in embarrassment. "No, I can come up with a plan, I just need time."
Rascal soon got irritated. "Bentley, sir, I have an idea."
Bentley turned to the small raccoon fox hybrid. "Okay, what is your idea?"
"We split up. Since there are only two possible locations Sly could be located at, half of us go to one location with one-time machine and the other half goes to the other option through our other time machine. We technically have two working time machines."
"Well…" Bentley scratched his head. "That does sound like a decent idea, but the van is needed for both, and it needs to be repaired."
Nathan grinned. "How about I go and 'borrow' a work van from my work?"
Skylar gasped. "Wait, what?"
"Did you guys forget?" Nathan responded. "I am a Cooper. I just have a separate job to make a couple extra bucks to get my mom to stop whining. I can 'borrow' a work truck that nobody has been using at my work. There are two work trucks that are not in use, like at all." He walked over to Rascal. "I'll return them before my company even knows they're missing."
Daniel raised an eyebrow. "You would steal from your company?"
Bentley started writing notes in his notebook in a hurry. Rascal stood up from the white couch he had been sitting on and spoke up. "Either way we do this, our time machine isn't 100% completed yet. It will be working soon, but we still need your help, Bentley."
"I got you covered." A familiar high-pitched girly voice emerged from the front door of Bentley's lab. Behind that front door was no one other than Penelope. She opened the door, revealing the finished time machine that the family was working on. Bentley nearly fainted at the sight of her. All he could feel was anger and fear, but he decided to remain calm to not stir trouble with her.
The time machine looked very modern. It was a square shape with a giant antenna at the top of it. The machine on its right side had a number pad to dial what year to go to. The machine was yellow with red stripes painted on it. The way it was built, it could fit perfectly on the work van Nathan had mentioned. It was small, but extremely dense. Penelope had it on a dolly due to its density.
"I finished the machine." Penelope brushed off the machine and herself, trying to wheel it into the lab as if nothing had ever happened between her and Bentley.
"You are not welcome here, Penelope." Bentley growled. "You need to leave."
"Bentley…" She sighed. "Look, I'm sorry. I was stupid. I made the worst mistake of my life. I wanted to make it up to you. I know Sly meant a lot to you."
Bentley crossed his arms, refusing to wheel anywhere near the sorry mouse. "Why should I believe you? You told me you hated Sly."
"You have every reason not to trust me." Penelope wheeled the time machine further into the lab. "But I promise, I am not trying to trick any of you. I thought about it while sitting in prison, and Bentley, you and Sly really changed my life. You guys managed to get me out of my shell and into the field, doing actual hero work for once. I felt really bad about what I did, I really did, and it wasn't just because of Carmelita's shock pistol. I'm sorry Bentley. You have every reason to never forgive me, but I just wanted to finish this time machine so you can get your friend back."
Bentley was hesitant accepting the time machine from her.
"You two know each other?" Skylar managed to choke out. She was stunned this conversation was even going on. Penelope never mentioned knowing Bentley, or even working with him or the gang at all. She mentioned knowing Sly some, but that was it."
"We dated actually." Bentley crossed his arms. "But I learned love is very, VERY blind."
Daniel stood awkwardly for a few moments before he managed to say something. He was embarrassed, but just like everyone else he had no idea Penelope was in league with Sly's gang at all. He just found her on the internet as a machinist and when he talked to her, she mentioned building a time machine. "I…I don't know how to respond."
Nathan leaned up against the wall. "It doesn't matter, dad. What matters now is that we now have two working time machines and we can go with Rascal's plan, possibly. I just need to get one of those work vans and bring it back here. We can install one-time machine on one then. While I get that, we need to get the Cooper van repaired. I'll ask the mechanic if he could do it, but I can't be for certain he will do it."
Daniel half smiled. "Yeah, I guess you're right, but when do you think we can execute all of this and go back into time to get Sly?"
Skylar grinned. "Nathan, do you need any help 'borrowing' that work van?
The sky seemed to be pitch black, littered with absolutely no stars. The two racoons emerged from the barbed fence to the detailing shop, hopping across as if it was just a game of hopscotch. Nathan stared at the entrance to the shop, trying to formulate how he was going to execute the 'rental' van.
He quietly snuck around back and signaled for Skylar to follow. She copied every single one of his moves perfectly, as if she was Sly himself.
"I get the code typed in." Nathan explained. "You go in and hit the alarm on the other side of this garage. You're small enough to fit through this entrance. If this door opens too wide, the alarm will go off."
Skylar nodded in understanding. Nathan quickly punched in the code and the door started to open. He stopped it quickly with his foot before the alarm would be set off. The alarm's code was only known by the shop managers, so Nathan wasn't sure what the code would be, otherwise he would've just opened the door as normal.
Skylar snuck over to the alarm on the other side of the garage and smashed it, shutting it completely down. Nathan then swung the door open and came through. He approached the lonely looking white van and sighed. "This is the end of my job."
Nathan jacked the door open and Skylar crawled into the passenger seat. Nathan got into the driver's seat and pressed a button on the roof of the van, opening the garage door. He turned to Skylar and smiled nervously. "Well that's one task down."
