Friday's party drove everyone into a lazy, hungover weekend. It was now Sunday and Azula and her friends were all lazing around the sibling's mansion. Music was softly playing as Azula flipped through her book about lobbyists with Ty Lee spinning and diving into their pool. Zuko and Mai lay in the shade, content with not participating in any sun or water activities.
"Oh my god...is that a hickey!"
Azula cringed and her hand shot to her neck. Fuck. FUCK. She forgot to put concealer on this morning.
Ty Lee was now next to her, tugging at her wrist, "Azula! I saw it." She grinned smugly, "And trust me, I'm pretty familiar with hickeys."
The sun was making her sweat as Azula gave up trying to hide her secret. She rolled her eyes, "Fine, you caught me. A complete drunken mistake."
Ty Lee just grinned, "Mai! Azula hooked up with someone!"
A mumbled response came from the shade, "Okay it's college Ty Lee, just leave her alone."
"But it's AZULA." Ty Lee shot over to Mai and Zuko, "Who do you think it is?"
"Please stop discussing my personal life," Azula sighed.
Zuko sat up rubbing his eyes, "Ew, yes please stop."
Mai rolled her eyes at Ty Lee pouting at Azula, "Come on Ty Lee, Azula's not going to tell us who she is no matter how much we bug her."
Zuko looked at her in surprise, "She?"
Mai looked at his confused expression and made eye contact with Ty Lee. To Zuko's further surprise, they both laughed.
"What?" He said angrily.
"You didn't know your own sister's a lesbian?" Mai was still laughing.
Ty Lee turned towards Azula, "You didn't tell him?"
Azula shrugged and flipped a page in her book, "I thought he already knew."
Zuko's eyes widened, "What…"
"Zuko, did you think Akira and Song freshman year, who by the way slept over here, were her friends?"
"Or all those girls she used to dance with at parties," Ty Lee giggled, "Freshman year Azula was way more fun!"
Zuko shook his head in disbelief. Mai was still laughing but wrapped an arm around him in comfort.
"I still think you knowing those names is a complete invasion of my privacy." Azula snapped.
Ty Lee giggled, "It's not our fault, we heard from other people!" She dived back in the pool, popping up for air, "And we'll find out who this girl is too!"
Azula shook her head. This was the problem with going to school. Or going out in the city anywhere for that matter. She did express an outward amusement to Zuko's confusion though. Azula almost chuckled, he was so dense sometimes.
The weekend was soon over and Azula was back in the school library. With headphones in and a corner table, she was not in the mood for any distractions. An assigned debate was coming up on the new Republic City sugar tax. Zuko immediately chose Azula as his partner, and she knew she would have to do the majority of the work.
Azula was researching the obesity rates of the city when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She flinched and looked up angrily.
Katara stood in front of her, backpack slung over one shoulder. She smiled softly, "Hey can I sit here?" She motioned to the empty seat at the large table.
Azula's eyes narrowed, "There are quite a number of other options."
Katara shrugged, "I study better with friends."
"We engaged in a sexual encounter once, that does not make us friends."
Katara just grinned back at her, not phased by Azula's pointed remarks. "Well I was hoping we could be friends."
"I told you, we are not doing that again. One-night stands are more convenient for me," Azula said directly.
Katara rolled her eyes, "Who said anything about sex? I just want to be friends."
Azula watched Katara retrieve her textbooks and notes from her backpack. She sighed, "We can be acquaintances."
Katara looked up from her notes and smiled, "See you're already warming up to me."
A reminder popped up on her calendar, and Azula was sucked back into her work. They sat across from each other silently working for an hour. Katara interrupted the silence and put down her pen, "What are you working on?"
Azula kept on typing, "Presentation."
"What's your major?"
Azula sighed, visibly annoyed at being questioned, "Political science and business."
"What career are you thinking of?"
Azula stopped typing and looked at Katara menacingly who just stared sincerely back at her. She rolled her eyes, "Law." She paused and then asked politely, "Are you interested in a particular path?"
Katara was playing with a blue necklace around her neck, "Biology, I'm hoping to go to medical school."
A soft alarm on Azula's phone interrupted them. She silenced it and closed her computer and started to pack away her things.
Katara adopted an amused look, "Do you really have your day scheduled through alarms."
"Yes, a strict schedule is the most efficient way to complete a multitude of tasks."
Katara started laughing, "You're such a nerd, I can't believe I was ever intimidated by you."
Azula paused and gave Katara a weird look, "I don't believe anyone has called me that so directly before." She finished packing away her things and stood up, "Maybe I should acquire more intimidation tactics."
"Please don't," Katara gave a soft smile, "I enjoy your failed attempts at being friendly."
Azula frowned. She wasn't sure how to respond to such direct teasing from someone she didn't really know. Should she be offended?
"Well, uh, I'll keep that in mind," Azula said after a few seconds of silence.
Azula turned to leave when Katara quickly said, "Hey, um if you're good at political science, I'm stuck in a government class that I have to take to graduate, I could use your help?"
Azula raised an eyebrow, "There are tutoring services here at the university."
"But I learn better with acquaintances," Katara kept her smile.
Azula coughed as Katara waited for her response. She looked down at the calendar on her phone and scrolled. Azula finally looked up and said, "Fine, I have a 3 pm to 6 pm opening this Saturday. You can come over then."
Katara looked at her curiously, "To your house?"
Azula suddenly felt sweaty. Fuck, why did she just invite Katara to her house. She recovered by snapping, "Of course, why would I drive all the way here just to tutor you on a Saturday."
Katara laughed, "Okay I didn't mean anything like that, I just have never been to your famous house."
Azula grimaced, "Oh." Her phone started buzzing with another alarm, "I should go, I should be in the locker room by now."
"Wait, I should probably get your number."
Azula sighed, "Right." She handed Katara her phone who typed in her contact and sent herself a text.
Katara waved, "I'll see you Saturday."
"Goodbye," Azula nodded and hurried to soccer practice. She looked down at the time and frowned, she was late. Azula was never late.
