Azula's phone vibrated against her leg. She looked up at Professor Sing lecturing to the other half of the class and quickly slid her phone out.
Katara: Which one?
Katara had sent her three photos of her in different tops.
Azula: All of them seem fashionable.
Katara: Everyone has favorites
Azula: I'm not good at these superficial decisions.
Katara: You dress well everyday !
Azula felt herself turning red, and was silently glad that Zuko was not sitting next to her. After their night at the ice cream store, Katara was adamant in keeping up their friendship. They settled into texting daily, much to Azula's despise for distractions. But a week passed by and she surprised herself with her own consistent responses.
Azula: I like the red one.
Katara: Finally, Thanks :)
Azula: What is this for?
Katara: Sokka's birthday party tomorrow, you're coming right?
Azula: Yes, unfortunately I did give you my word last week.
She snickered at her phone as Katara sent her an eye-rolling emoji.
"Azula, would you like to share why the recession of our country is so amusing to you?"
Azula looked up to find Professor Sing standing over her. Her face burned with embarrassment as the entire class turned to look at her.
"Apologies Professor, it won't happen again."
Professor Sing glared at her, "See that it won't."
Zuko chuckled as Azula slid her phone back into her pocket. Damn. That never happened. She was always focused in class. Azula sighed and made a mental note to apologize again after class.
The following night, Azula stood in front of her closet frustrated at her indecisiveness. She could hear Zuko yelling that the Uber would be here soon. She grimaced and settled on a strapless, crimson top. It was just a party…
She clasped a golden necklace around her neck and looked in the mirror. Red and gold always suited her.
"Azula! The Uber is waiting outside."
"He's supposed to wait, he's a driver Zuzu." Azula finally walked down the stairs casually.
Zuko looked up and blinked, "You dressed up."
She glared at him, "Unlike you, I care about my appearance."
Zuko smirked, "Whatever."
Azula rolled her eyes and followed him to the car.
They arrived at the party right when the crowd was singing happy birthday to Sokka. Zuko immediately spotted Mai and walked over to her. Azula hung back as the crowd dispersed. She spotted Ty Lee and Aang in the middle of a dance circle. Sokka was laughing with his arm around Suki as people came up to wish him a happy birthday. Azula looked around and tried to ignore the feeling of disappointment as she couldn't find Katara.
A hand gently touched her shoulder, "Hey."
Azula turned around to find Katara smiling at her. She paused and gave Azula a peculiar look.
"What?" Azula snapped.
Katara blinked, "Nothing, you just dressed up."
"Am I not allowed to wear jewelry?" Azula retorted.
"No you just-" Katara's smile softened, "You just look really pretty."
Heat rose to Azula's cheeks as she took a sip of her drink. "Um Thank you." She gestured to Katara's top. "The red was the right pick."
Katara laughed and grabbed Azula's wrists, yanking her toward the dancing crowd, "Come on let's go dance."
"I'm perfectly okay with my current position."
Katara ignored her and led her to the dance floor. Azula felt her discomfort melt away as the crowd hid them from the public gaze. Music was pounding loudly and Azula could feel the alcohol start to hit. Katara slid behind her and wrapped her arms around Azula's waist. Fuck no, she quickly spun out of Katara's arms and slid behind her smugly. Katara rolled her eyes but let Azula's hands grip her torso.
They swayed and grinded to the pounding music. Katara was wearing a crop top allowing Azula to slide her hands onto her smooth skin. To her surprise, Katara was relaxed, her movements smooth and on beat, Azula only had to follow her shifting hips. A couple songs went by and Azula could feel herself growing heated. Katara was completely pressed up against her, rubbing against her front. With her eyes closed, Azula blamed her desires on the music. They were just dancing. Nothing more.
A slower song was turned on and the crowd started to leave. Azula immediately let go of Katara and walked towards the couches.
"Azula? What's wrong?"
Katara sat down next to her as she leaned into the couch.
"Nothing," Azula felt herself turning red, "I just need a moment alone is all."
"Did you not have fun?"
"No I did."
Katara frowned, "Okay." She got up and slowly walked away.
Azula groaned silently. When did she ever care what anyone thought of her? She detested this want for Katara's validation. She stayed slumped into the couch as the party went on. In the corner of her eye, she caught a girl talking to Katara on the other side of the room. Katara was laughing as the girl told her a joke. Azula scowled and got up to get another drink.
She returned to the couch only to find Ty Lee splayed out on its cushions.
"Ty Lee, I was sitting there."
The gymnast giggled and sat up, "Sorry Azula, I just needed a break from all those gross boys."
Azula rolled her eyes and sat next to her, "We all know you like the attention."
Ty Lee feigned shock and smiled, "I would never do that," she slid her legs onto Azula's lap, "Plus I'm tired of boys."
"Please remove your legs from my personal space."
Ty Lee ignored her, obviously past her limit of alcohol. She leaned closer to Azula and whispered, "You look so pretty today."
Azula frowned, "What are you doing?"
"I'm flirting!" Ty Lee giggled.
"I'm sure you can go find other boys to practice with."
"I'm not practicing...I think you're so hot." Ty Lee gave a drunken wink.
"You are very much inebriated Ty Lee."
"So?" Ty Lee leaned closer, "You've never even thought about it?"
Azula stayed silent and looked at Ty Lee. The gymnast was objectively very attractive, her face angelic with a very toned, curvy body.
Azula grunted, "No."
Ty Lee smirked, "Don't pretend like you didn't have a crush growing up."
"That was a childish game we played."
"You kissed me first." Ty Lee eyed her amusingly.
Azula cringed at the memory from highschool, "I was mistaken to ever make such a decision."
Ty Lee, for once, stayed silent and smiled. She leaned in and whispered in Azula's ear, "Want to try again?"
Fuck. Azula was still sexually charged from dancing with Katara. Seconds passed. She felt Ty Lee's hands slide to her waist, touching her bare skin. Azula reciprocated and pressed her lips to Ty Lee's. She felt Ty lee slip her tongue in and she gently tugged at the gymnast's hair in response. They stayed making out for a few minutes when Azula realized what she was doing and pulled away.
"Stop, Ty Lee. This is stupid."
Ty Lee giggled, "Why? It's just for fun?"
Suddenly, Azula saw Katara at the edge of the crowd watching her. They made eye contact and she opened her mouth to say something in protest. Katara just stared at her in anger and whipped around to the exit.
"'Zula?" Ty Lee waved her hands in front of her, "I was just kidding, I know you don't like me like that anymore."
"I-" Azula felt regret stirring in her.
Ty Lee's eyes widened, "Oh my god, but you do like someone else."
"No I don't!" Azula snapped. She got up with Ty Lee still giggling on the couch.
"You like someone!"
Azula glared at her and stomped out the door. She slammed the door open and scanned the deck for Katara. The empty night stared back at her.
"FUCK," she groaned. Ty Lee was annoyingly right. Azula was disgusted at her own feelings for someone else. Was this a crush? How stupid of her to allow this to even happen.
Azula sank into a chair and rubbed at her aching headache. She had to find Katara and apologize. The night air was soothing and Azula felt her eyes closing. Soon she was falling asleep.
