Love at First Sight
Tonks is one of the first to arrive at the first meeting for the Order of the Phoenix.
"Glad you could make it, Nymphadora," Dumbledore says.
Tonks glares at him. "Don't. Call. Me. Nymphadora." Her hair turns burnt orange.
"My apologies, Miss Tonks," Dumbledore says, his eyes twinkling merrily behind his glasses.
"Glad to see you, Tonks. Would you like any tea? Any food?"
"I'm good, Molly. Thanks for asking. So, when will the rest of the members show up?"
"They'll be here soon," a voice says from behind.
Tonks turns around to see Sirius walking down the stairs. A smile appears on his face.
"Tonks! It's great to see you, cuz," Sirius calls out as he claps her on the back. "How have you been? Found the perfect boy yet?"
"Nice to see you as well, Sirius. Glad to see that Azkaban didn't take away that sense of humor of yours," Tonks replies.
Sirius smiles brightly, his eyes seeming to sparkle. Tonks takes a step back so she can get a good look at her cousin. His black hair is long and unkept, due either to his long imprisonment or his lack of concern for self care. Probably both. Sirius's skin is a bit paler than the pre-imprisonment photos that she has seen taken of him with his friends.
"Ya know, you're not as shabby or crazy-looking as the images the ministry has of you," Tonks comments.
"Of course not! Those idiots probably made the photos look like that," Sirius says. "Anyways! Molly, when can I see Harry? It's been months, and I miss my godson."
"You know why you can't visit him. The ministry is still after you," Molly reminds Sirius.
"And they will probably still be after me in the coming years. Look, I can go as Padfoot! They don't know that I'm an animagus," Sirius says as he turns towards Tonks. "Come on, Tonks, you gotta help me. I've been under house arrest for weeks. WEEKS, Tonks! Do you know how lonely and stir-crazy I'm getting? It doesn't help that Mother's painting won't shut up. Literally, she screams at the most random and annoying times! I've been woken up in the middle of the night because she decides it's the perfect time to yell about this and that. I can't even get rid of her because she's enchanted to the bloody wall!"
While Sirius complained about the unfairness, Dumbledore and Molly head to the dining room, chatting about school and candy.
"Looks like our resident fugitive is still complaining about being free and safe in his house," a monotone voice speaks up from the entrance.
"Ah, Snivellus! Glad you could leave your damp, dark dungeon to join the living," Sirius says as he turns towards him.
Snape's face is void of emotions. He scoffs as he walks towards the dining room, ignoring Sirius.
"Don't be like that, Snivellus! I know that deep down in your heart you love me," Sirius shouts after Snape.
"Leave him be, Sirius. I think he's grumpier than usual."
Tonks glance over at the voice to see a scraggly-looking man standing there. Her cousin smiles brightly as he walks over to him.
"Moony! You made it," Sirius shouts in glee as he hugs this 'Moony' person.
Tonks looks over to see Sirius hugging him. Her breath catches in her throat as their eyes connect. Green eyes look into her dark ones. She blinks in surprise at the gentleness that they hold. Tonk's can't remember the last time someone looked at her like that.
Her heart starts to race. Her hair changes to a cherry pink color as a blush slowly creeps onto her face. Tonks quickly turns her head, silently praying that no one saw her blush.
She sneaks a glance at him, trying to figure out what is so appealing and magnetic about him. Maybe it was the way he looked at her. Maybe it was the faint scar on his face that just suits him. Whatever the reason is, all Tonks know is that she feels helpless around him.
Remus doesn't know what to think. He locks eyes with the woman Sirius was talking to for only a second. And in that second, her hair not only changes color, but also she looks away. Sirius pulls back to see Remus's confused face. He then looks over at his cousin. Eyes widen, and a smirk appears on Sirius's face as he realizes what's happening.
"Moony! This is my cousin Nymphadora Tonks. Cuz, this is Remus Lupin. Moony here is one of the Marauders."
"Err… nice to meet you," Tonks says as her hair slowly turns back to its usual color.
"It's nice to meet you as well," Remus says.
He glances over at Sirius to see his friend smiling at him. Sirius claps his hand on Remus's back and leans in a bit closer.
"I'll leave you to it," Sirius whispers in his ear.
Remus looks at his friend in utter confusion as he hurries away.
"What was that about?" Tonks asks, glancing at him.
"I have no idea. So um… Nymph—"
"Please no. Call me Tonks."
"Ok. Tonks, what do you think the meeting will be about?"
"Probably just an introduction kinda thing. Maybe talk about what the plan is," Tonks says, crossing her arms.
"Ah. That makes sense," Remus replies.
An awkward silence falls between them. Tonks sneak another glance at Remus as she tries to think of what to talk about. She racks her brain with a question, anything that could get rid of the silence.
"So uh… what do you do?" Remus asks, breaking the silence that fell on them.
"I'm an Auror. What about yourself?"
Sirius is less than pleased with the lack of chemistry between Tonks and Moony. He frowns as he spies on them from the dining room.
"Aw come on, Tonks! Flirt!"
"Now what exactly are you doing, Sirius?" Molly demands Sirius jumps in surprise.
His head whips around as he looks at Molly.
"Bloody hell, Molly! Don't sneak up on people," Sirius whisper-yells.
"What are you doing Sirius?" Molly asks once again.
"What does it look like? I'm trying to hook Tonks up with Moony."
"Why?!"
"Her hair turned cherry pink when she saw him. If I remember correctly, it only does that when she thinks someone is cute, and dateable. The same thing happened when she talked about her ex-boyfriend Daniel. You know, the guy she dated in her fifth year, only to break his nose four months later because he kissed Samantha. She wouldn't stop complaining about the audacity he had to cheat on her. At least, that's what Andromeda told me when she visited. I figured a nice, steady, loyal fellow like Remus is exactly what she needs."
"Let them be, Sirius. If anything happens, it will be on their own," Molly scolds him.
"I want to know what happens. Oh shoot! They're coming," Sirius says as he hurries away from the door.
The door opens. Tonks and Remus walk in, busy chit-chatting about different dueling spells.
"It looks like everyone is here. Now then, let's begin," Dumbledore says from where he sits, drinking some tea.
Everyone takes a seat at the table. Molly brings some snacks and drinks out. Once everything settles down, Dumbledore clears his throat. The quiet whispering slowly subsides as everyone looks over at Dumbledore. He opens his mouth and the meeting officially starts.
Tonks glances at Remus once again. The meeting has been going smoothly. They have mostly introduced themselves and explained how they plan on helping the Order. Tonks hasn't been paying much attention, too busy trying to figure out why her heart races at the thought of Remus Lupin. Out of the corner of her eye, she sees Sirius smirk and wiggle his eyebrows at her. Tonks huffs and looks away from her cousin.
"I believe that concludes the meeting. The next one will be in two weeks. I hope to see you all there," Dumbledore says as he Apparates away.
Tonks blinks in surprise. She looks around to see that almost everyone is gone. The only ones left are Sirius, Remus, Molly, Arthur, Kingsley and herself. Arthur and Kingsley are talking about Ministry-related things while Molly is cleaning the table up.
"I better be off," Remus says as he glances at her. "It was a pleasure meeting you, Tonks."
"You as well. Will you be at the next meeting?" Tonks asks, hope swelling in her chest.
"Yes. Will you?"
"Definitely."
"Alright. I'll see you there," Remus says.
"Ok. Bye."
Remus smiles and nods his head, then Apparates to his next destination. Silence settles over Tonks as she smiles, a light blush on her face.
"So when's the wedding?"
"Oh shut up, Padfoot," Tonks says as Sirius starts to laugh.
