CHAPTER ONE- The Sound of Rust

I wish I'd never done it.

Whose idea was it to go into an abandoned, unstable amusement park in the middle of the night?

Oh, right. Mine.

I creeped forward, keeping myself hidden in the shadows as I kept my eyes on the rusted gate. Kira, my best friend, crept along behind me.

"Are you sure this is a good idea, Seryia?" Kira whispered. I quickly scanned the area for any people.

"Nope," I replied, rushing to the gate and slipping through a large gap in the bars. I heard Kira sigh as she followed.

The amusement park had been abandoned twenty years earlier. The rides had broken down and were all unstable, collapsing on themselves and being a danger in general. The two of us jumped at the loud creak of rusted metal sliding.

I pulled my long black hair back, tying it so it stopped getting in my face. Setting my eyes on a ride that seemed the least dangerous, I sank into the darkness and started making my way over there.

There were several echoing sounds of metal screeching on metal. No wonder most people in the city were scared of the park; the sounds alone were enough to make someone run and hide. Kira seemed to jump at every little sound.

I stood up, looking up at the twisting roller coaster. It looked like several parts had already collapsed; rusted iron was scattered underneath the ride, jagged edges were visible in the moonlight, and a section or two seemed to have twisted under its own weight.

The sections that remained seemed stable, however. I scanned for a bit before finding a place that looked safe enough to climb. I started towards it.

"This is a really terrible idea!" Kira hissed at me. I grunted quietly at her, testing my weight on two of the bars that made up the pillar. It was one of the dozens holding up the ride; one of the only things keeping the whole coaster from falling on us.

Pushing the thought out of the way, I began to climb. Kira growled, but followed me.

The pillar was taller than I thought. The rust cut into my palms, scratching me, as if it wanted me to fall.

I hope those cuts don't get infected, I thought. My parents were used to me doing dangerous things, such as deciding to drive a car through the school hallways- or deciding to go to an abandoned amusement park in the middle of the night. But since my little sister had been born less than a year ago, they had less power to stop me.

I climbed onto the track where the cars would have run and helped Kira climb on. I took a breath, refusing to look down to the ground a hundred feet below.

"Well, too late now," Kira mumbled. I laughed.

"This isn't too scary, is it?" I laugh, taking a few steps forward on the rails. I heard Kira gasp a little.

"It is, Seryia! This is terrifying!" Kira said so loud it was almost a scream. I winced, taking another few steps forward.

Kira stepped on the side, where there was more space to stand. I kept taking the steps on the rails, from one rusted metal step, over the breath-taking drop, to the next rusted metal step. The midnight moon rose high above, giving light.

Eventually, we were greeted by a yawning gap between the rails, too far to jump across. Kira gulped.

"We should go back," she whispered. I shot her a look, pointing to a thin metal bar connecting the two sides. It was slightly to the side, extremely rusted and dented, as if it hadn't stayed there without a fight.

I stepped forward, taking a step on the bar. There was a creaking of metal as the roller coaster shifted. Holding my breath, I counted the seconds until it stopped. Then I took another step. And another. I made it to the other side quickly, the metal bar seeming to keep slipping under my feet.

Looking back, I saw Kira a few feet back from the edge. She didn't seem to want to get any closer to it. Sighing, I turned to look at Kira from the unsteady track.

"See? I'm fine," I called across. That's when it happened.

The screech of rusted metal on rusted metal filled the air, the bar snapping as the world tilted sideways. For a dizzying second, I realized that a section of the coaster was coming loose. Then, I was falling.

I tumbled in a heap of rusted metal. I closed my eyes, curling into a ball and trying to roll. The sudden hit of the railing beneath the rails I was on pushed all breath out of my lungs. I distantly heard Kira shouting my name, then loud echoing footsteps as she tried to find a way down.

Everything hurt. Something was pinning my leg down, stabbing straight through the middle of it. Rusted pieces of metal were embedded in my arm and my cheek. A large piece of torn track had pierced my chest, right through my lungs.

I tried to gasp, but it felt like I was choking on air. I squinted my eyes out, but it appeared my head was at a weird angle and all I could see was blood. Blood. My blood. Trying to scream, I choked on my own blood, my lungs unable to take in oxygen.

The world started to grow black and fuzzy. Somehow I could still feel the agony, and it was turning me to unconsciousness. My final thought before I gave in to the darkness of death was I hope Kira is okay.
