"So, that's pretty much everything," he said, refusing to meet her eyes.

"How?" she asked, her hands trembling. "How could you do this to me?"

"I told you, I had to-"

"To protect me? Is that the truth or is that just what you tell yourself to sleep at night?" He finally looked up at her, shock and confusion visible in his eyes. Her tone was harsh, and he seemed to diminish slightly at every word that left her mouth. But she couldn't stop, and she wasn't sure she wanted to. The pain he was feeling now was just a fraction of what she had felt for the past year. He deserved it.

"How is it protecting me if you're living with me? If this organization is as ruthless as you say, and they found out who you are, they would've killed me anyway, regardless of whether I knew or not, right?" He could do nothing but nod solemnly, his gaze once again resting at his feet. He looked incredibly sad and guilty, and a small part of her told her to stop, that he got the point and that she was going too far. She shoved that part to the corner of her mind and pressed on, venting all her frustrations over the past year at the little boy.

"And- and, you were also calling and even meeting me as yourself! If the organization got wind of either of those, they would've been knocking on my door within the hour!"

"I know Ran, but you were suffering and I wanted to try and cheer you up in a way Conan couldn't, even if only for a little bit-"

"You can't have it both ways Shinichi. If you wanted me to be happy you would've told me the truth. If you wanted to protect me you would've stayed far away from me. Instead, you picked the worst parts of both options, making me suffer and giving me false hope day after day, while also putting me in danger at the same time."

"I know Ran, and I'm sorry, I really am. But I-"

"'Sorry' doesn't cut it Shinichi. 'Sorry' doesn't make up for everything you've put me through for absolutely no reason." He flinched at that; the thought that all his efforts had been useless must have been a painful one, but she wasn't about to apologize for it.

"I know it doesn't Ran. I know there's nothing I can say or do to make it okay, but please Ran, I-"

"No, Shinichi. I don't want to hear it." She swore she saw his heart crack as if he knew what was coming. "I want you to leave. I don't want to see you again." He looked shocked for a brief moment before his expression faded into solemn acceptance. He clearly had expected this as a possibility.

"Okay. I understand. I'll- I'll have my parents take me back… to America." Now it was her turn to be surprised, surprised that he didn't even try to defend himself further; he immediately gave up and accepted her decision, no matter how much it must have hurt him to do so.

He looked up at her as if expecting her to say something, but she simply nodded. She wasn't sure if he expected her to change her mind, but she thought she saw a flash of disappointment in his eyes before it vanished just as quickly.

"Right. Goodbye Ran." He turned around to leave, but stopped after taking a few steps. "I love you Ran. I always have. I always will." He still had his back turned, so she couldn't see his face, but she saw a single tear drop down of his face onto the grass below before he turned the corner and left.

She was alone now, and she could no longer hold back the tears that had been building since they began talking. She began sobbing and the tears fell freely down her face. His receding footsteps stopped briefly before they resumed, only this time much faster.

Hey everyone! Thanks for reading my story! This is the first fanfiction I have ever written, so I would really appreciate any thoughts you guys have and I am open to any constructive criticism you may have!

Besides that, this is just an idea I've floated around in my head for a couple of days, so I finally decided to put it into writing. I've seen a ton of stories where Ran completely forgives him almost immediately, so I wanted to try my hand at what could happen if she couldn't forgive him(at least not at first).

I do have some ideas on continuing this story and potentially creating a good ending for them, so let me know if you would be interested in seeing that! Thank you for reading this, I really appreciate it.
