To See How Life Went On

Ginny slipped her hand in Neville's, which surprised him enough to take him out of his thoughts and bring him back to the elevator they were riding. She was wearing a black skirt and a pine green sweater the same colour as her Harpies' jersey or the merch that he and Luna wore to her games all the time. Her red hair hung over her shoulders like a curtain.

"Hey," she said.

"Hey," Neville repeated. Ginny smiled and squeezed his hand.

"It will be okay," Luna said. She wrapped an arm around Neville's, the softness of her cardigan brushing against his skin. She was wearing layers of long skirts and her hair had been plaited into a thick, loose braid for a few days now, so it was starting to fall apart. "The tea leaves this morning said so. I even read them under the sun to be sure."

"Thank you," Neville said. The elevator doors opened on the fourth floor of St. Mungo's, which Neville knew well. The tiled floor, the pale blue walls with the occasional corkboard showing photos and artwork from residents, the lights that were simultaneously too bright and not at all warm…

Neville took a deep breath. Ginny squeezed his hand again.

"Neville," she said quietly. "We don't have to do this if you don't want to. If it's too difficult…"

"No," Neville interrupted her. "No, Ginny, it's… it's okay. This is long overdue, anyways."

Part of him felt guilty, for taking this long before introducing his two favourite people in the world to his parents—to the people who had made him and loved him first and risked and given up everything for him to grow up in a safe world. He wasn't sure if his parents would mind the delay, but Neville still felt bad. Luna and Ginny made him so happy, he should have introduced them to his parents ages ago just in case they could make them as happy by proxy too.

"Besides, we got some good news today, the three of us," Neville said. "If there was ever a time for you two to meet my parents, it's now."

Ginny smiled when he said it, her hand drifting to her midriff.

"We did get good news today," she said. She leaned forwards and kissed Neville's cheek.

"I'm excited to meet them," Luna said quietly from Neville's side. "If now is the right time for you, lovely."

"It's the right time," Neville said. They were having a baby soon, and his parents deserved to meet their grandchild and to see how life had gone on because of their work and their losses. They should meet his child's mothers first.

The girls let him lead the way down, framing him and bracing him and grounding him so that panic didn't boil up from his stomach.

"They might not remember me," Neville warned them. "They might not look at you, they might not say anything, they might not…"

"That's okay," Luna said. "We want to meet your parents on their own terms."

"We're mostly focused on making a good first impression. We're very nervous, you know," Ginny said.

Neville cracked a smile.

"Are you?" he asked.

"Of course," Ginny said. "I dressed up."

"I'm wearing my lucky earrings," Luna said, gesturing to the painted seashells hanging from her ears.

"Is that what you two were talking about when I fell asleep last night?" Neville asked.

"That and how adorable you look when you fall asleep with the blanket bunched up in your hands," Ginny said with a smile. "But yes, mostly our nerves."

"Ginny also said something about Quidditch then but I forgot what it was," Luna said quietly. Neville snorted. He and Luna were both so, so bad at Quidditch. How had Ginny ended up with the two of them? Neville supposed she must love them, which worked out well since they loved her and each other too. That was it, really. That was all they needed for this to go well.

"Their room is right there," Neville said. He took a deep breath. "Let me introduce you."

"Can I knock?" Luna asked earnestly. Ginny squeezed his hand.

"Sure," Neville said. "You can knock."
