notes: am i posting this while waiting for a hurricane to hit? yes. yes i am.
notice: This story's 'religious' instances and refernces are very loosely based on Roman Catholicism. This is NOT a critique of religion or making fun of any religion at all. The characters I use are not biblically accurate and I didn't intend them to be. I was raised Catholic so I thought that if I didn't find something offensive, there was a low probability others will. So to recap: not biblically accurate, not a criticism of religion, not meant to be offensive :)
also! please don't pm me just to promote your stories :) and if u do and i don't respond, don't continuously spam me with a link to your fic lol, sorry if u think that's rude :/
Natsu stared at the blaze before him. It was beautiful, in a morbid type of way.
He couldn't look away from the glowing destruction. He'd always loved fire and the way that something so beautiful could destroy so quickly.
So there he sat on the sidewalk, still watching the house in front of him burn. The firefighters were there. He could hear them yelling out orders.
It was too late though. Nothing would be salvaged from the house. It'd end up charred and dead. Nothing would come out unscathed.
He was snapped out of his trance when someone sat down next to him.
"Are they done with the questioning?" He asked them.
"Yeah, I'm gonna have to go to the hospital though." The person responded.
"What? Why? Are you hurt?"
"Jesus, calm down." They said. "I had to stay in there for a bit to make it believable that it was an accident. They have to check me for carbon monoxide poisoning."
"Are you serious? You could've died! " He growled out, exasperated at their foolishness.
"I know. That's why I didn't tell you. You would've tried to stop me."
"Damn right I would have."
There was a beat of silence before Natsu looked at the ground and asked. "Do you feel guilty?"
Out of the corner of his eye he saw their jaw clench. "Not at all." Their voice, now cold.
Abruptly, they stood up as they saw a paramedic come to usher them away. "I'll call you when I get out."
"I'll visit you, idiot."
The person smiled sadly at Natsu. "I'll be waiting."
As Natsu watched his friend walk with the paramedic, he caught part of their conversation.
"You sure do have guardian angels watching over you kid."
"Not angels, demons."
"Huh?"
"Angels don't bother with people like me."
Natsu woke up with a start. He sat up on his bed, his breathing heavy. He hadn't had any dreams since he became a demon, nonetheless any dreams about that. It had happened so long ago and he truly didn't like to think about it. In hell that hadn't been a problem but Earthland seemed to affect him somehow.
He reached over to the nightstand to check the time. The glaringly bright screen read the numbers 6:12 am.
Deciding he didn't want to go back to sleep and wanting to get an early start to the day, Natsu went to shower, pushing the dream to the back of his mind and the upcoming party to the front.
The school day started off without a hitch. He had two classes with Lucy, both of which he sat next to her, and he made sure to annoy the ever living crap out of her.
At some point, the blonde seemed to have had enough, and threw her pencil at him.
"My goodness Luce!" He whispered. "Now that wasn't very angelic of you."
He saw her eye twitch and he could have sworn he heard her growl, before she plastered on a fake ass smile and turned back to face the front.
At lunch he headed towards the table he'd been frequenting for the past week, Lucy being absent as she ate on the roof to avoid people.
He sat down in between two guys named Sting and Jellal. He thought they were pretty cool dudes. Sting was one annoying motherfucker but he was fun to fight and had a great sense of humor. Jellal was a good fighter too, though he seemed to be quieter and more serious than Sting. Natsu could respect that though.
He was in the midst of stuffing an apple in his mouth when Cana slammed her tray on the table and sat down directly in front of him.
"How's it going pinky?"
He rolled his eyes, continuing to eat his apple. "It was going pretty well until you came along." He said, or at least he tried to. It came out muffled and distorted because his mouth was full.
"I didn't understand any of that so I'm just gonna pretend you said something nice."
Erza sat down next to Cana, joined by Juvia shortly afterwards. Natsu quickly glanced at her before diverting his eyes back down to his food. He didn't want to risk pissing her off, Erza was fucking scary, and that was saying something, considering he was the prince of Hell.
Nonetheless, his efforts to avoid drawing her attention failed as she started talking to him.
"So Natsu," She started. "Cana tells us that her roommate is going to go to the party."
"Uh, yeah? Cana knows more than I do, she's her roommate."
Erza hummed. "She says you two have history."
Natsu snorted and picked at his plate with his fork. "Ha, yeah. I guess you could say that."
At that Sting slammed his hands down on the table drawing everyone's attention towards him. "No way dude! You know that hot blonde chick? Have you hooked up with her? Did you guys date? Why didn't you introduce us? Is she good in the sa-"
The energetic boy was promptly choked off by Natsu as the demon grabbed a hold of his collar and pulled him close. Raw, hot energy surrounded them, Sting felt like he was burning.
"Shut. Up." And with that he released him, and Sting fell back onto his seat. The rest of the table stayed silent as the blond regained his composure and the pinkette calmed down.
"Sorry." He said after a while. "It's just a sensitive subject."
Sting coughed before he was wearing a smile again and slapping Natsu on the back.
"No worries man, I won't cross that line again."
With that, the air of tension dissipated and everyone felt a little bit lighter.
"If I may ask," Said the black haired guy sitting next to Sting. "How do you and Lucy know each other?"
Natsu pondered for a moment, wondering what he could and couldn't say before a devilish (haha i'm funny) smirk settled on his face.
"It's all good Rouge, and ya know, it's actually kind of a funny story. You should ask Lucy when you meet her tonight. Preferably in truth or dare.."
Rouge nodded, not sensing anything mischievous with what Natsu had said.
"I'm looking forward to meeting this Lucy. She seems interesting."
"Yeah," Natsue agreed. "She's really something."
After lunch the rest of the day seemed meaningless. It was just hours wasted until he got to the party, and so it passed by excruciatingly slow.
As soon as the last bell rang, Natsu bolted out of there faster than humanly possible. He quickly shut all his windows and sat down on the ground, his finger drawing an invisible summoning symbol.
Yet again, a white haired demon showed up.
"Hey Lis!"
"Hi Natsu, you seem to be in a better mood. What's up?"
"I'm going to a party."
Lisanna's eyes widened at his words and her hands started fidgeting. "Are you sure that's a good idea?"
The demon prince snorted and leaned forward to rest his face in his hands.
"Of course it is!"
Natsu's answer did nothing to calm Lisanna down. She was worried Natsu was going to get piss drunk and say something he wasn't supposed to. Or even worse, change into his true form.
"Um ok, if you say so. Does Zeref know?"
"Yeah, he actually wants me to go." Lisanna's eyebrows shot up in surprise at his response. She was sure that Zeref would have forbade Natsu from going.
"Anyways Lis, I wanted to know if you could get me through to the big man upstairs?"
Lisanna squinted her eyes and scowled at the demon in front of her. "Natsu…" She growled out.
"Oh come on Lisanna! Please! I'm begging!" And he truly was begging. He had shifted onto his knees and had his hands clasped together in front of his chest. His eyes pleading for her to say yes.
Honestly, it was kind of a pathetic sight and Lisanna had to swallow back a laugh. Instead she sighed in exasperation and rolled her eyes.
"Yeah whatever, but you owe me! This takes a lot of curse power." And then she was gone before Natsu could even thank her.
Shortly after, an image of Makaroc appeared in front of Natsu
"Natsu? Why did you call? You know this isn't really allowed."
"Now now gramps," He said in response. "Is that the way to greet your favorite demon?"
Makarov stared at the image of Natsu before sighing and rubbing the bridge of his nose.
"What the hell do you want Natsu."
"Oh not a lot! Just some clarification. Angels can't hold their alcohol very well, can they?"
"Uh, not necessarily, though I am confused as to why-"
"Thanks gramps! Bye!"
"Natsu wai-!"
However Natsu did not wait, and quickly broke the summoning circle before Makarov could ask anymore questions. After that he was off to the party.
He 'climbed' through the window into the dorm, where the party had already started. He could visibly see Jellal, Erza, and Rouge but he couldn't find Lucy. Before he could head off to look for her, Cana popped out of nowhere.
"Natsu! You have to drink. House rules. So what can I get for ya?"
His eyes kept searching the room, trying to find a familiar blonde head.
"Uh fire whiskey if you have that." He said absentmindedly.
"Ooh ballsy. I like that. I'll get your drink and then I'll come find you." With that, she squeezed his biceps which made Natsu look back at her in surprise, before she left to get his drink.
Natsu continued his search for Lucy before he found her in her room talking to Juvia. He went up to the angel , grabbed her wrist and started to pull her away before she could object.
"Sorry Juvia! I'll return her in a sec."
He pulled her into the bathroom and shut the door just before she started complaining.
"What the fuck Natsu?"
"I talked to Makarov today." Lucy stilled at his words, anticipating the words. "You wanna know what he said?"
Lucy shook her head which made Natsu laugh. He leaned in close and whispered in her ear, his hot breath making Lucy shiver.
"He said you're a lightweight."
She immediately pushed the male off of her causing him to crash into the door laughing.
"You're such an ass." She hissed
He shrugged. "True, but i'm a hot piece of ass."
"Oh fuck off."
This made Natsu laugh again before he spoke. "That wasn't the only thing I wanted to tell you though."
"Say it."
" I told the gang we should play truth or dare."
Lucy paled and her eyes widened in panic. "Natsu no."
"Aw come on Luce! Everyone was so excited to play with you!"
The angel wrinkled her nose and shook her head.
"First off that sounds gross." She thought she heard mumbled words along the lines of 'you're a perv' but she ignored them. "Secondly, you know I can't lie! I'm literally not allowed to!"
Natsu feigned an innocent smile though she could see the mirth behind his eyes.
"You don't have to lie about anything. You've always been good at maneuvering around the truth." She cringed at his words, Natsu purposefully ignored that. "So, let's get this show on the road!"
Natsu pushed Lucy out of the bathroom before she could protest, giddy to throw her in the lion's den.
things that might need clarification: 1) in case you didn't catch on, Natsu uses summoning circles for communication. summoning circles can also be used to summon demons but you can't exactly do that everytime you want to chat. demons are very busy nephilims! so instead, natsu uses a summoning circle to summon Lisanna who is kind of in charge of communication? something like that, and then Lisanna connects the two people who wanna talk. So like a secretary or something. but for the underworld 2) Angels are lightweights in my AU! This has to do with a quote I wanted Cana to say later on in the story so it'll hopefully make sense later. Also! Angels can't lie unless it's like a life or death situation. Therefore, Lucy cannot lie during truth or dare. Lying is deception and stuff so I thought it'd make some sense.
