I'm so sorry that I took me so long to update this story. I have no good excuses, I'm just a busy student who sometimes neglects this part of my life. Without any further ado, I hope you enjoy :)
Emily made her way into the kitchen and leaned over the island, watching Addison eat her breakfast.
"I took a look at the write-up. I think I have it down," Addison told her "mother" between bites. She had read through it a couple of times that morning. For most, that might not be enough of a review but for Addison this was easy. She had practiced enough times to know how to memorize a backstory quickly.
"Okay, I'll quiz you," Emily replied with a nod.
"Go ahead, I won't slip up," Addison said confidently.
Emily laughed at Addison's cocky composure. "Let's see how good you are. Okay, starting easy: What is your name?"
"Addison," the teen replied with a cheeky grin.
Emily rolled her eyes at the response. As much as she wanted to keep things light, this was serious. "Okay smartass, full name."
"Addison Danielle Prentiss," Addison said without hesitation.
"Daniela," Emily corrected. This would be a challenge if Addison could not remember her own name.
Addison shook her head. "Check again," she said before taking a sip of her coffee.
Emily grabbed the envelope off the counter and pulled her copy of their backstory out. She carefully examined it. "You're right. Danielle.
"Birthday?" Emily asked next.
"February 14, 2001," Addison replied dryly.
"Oooh a Valentine's Day baby," Emily teased as she watched Addison blush, cheeks tinted bright red. Addison's real birthday was in February but it was not on Valentine's Day.
This time it was Addison's turn to roll her eyes. "Shut up. You picked this," she groaned as she buried her face in her palm, trying to hide her embarrassment.
"I did not. None of this was my idea," Emily replied defensively as she smirked at Addison's irritation. She loved watching the teenager squirm but after a moment she continued down her line of questions. "Why did we move here?"
Addison tilted her head up and paused for a moment to reflect. "You're from D.C. and your family is here. You wanted to move home after the divorce."
Emily nodded, letting Addison know that she was right. "Where did we move from?"
"Albuquerque, New Mexico," the teen said. She would have to do some research about Albuquerque because she knew very little. She didn't know a lot about the US aside from history her father had taught her. The next few weeks would be spent morphing into an American teenager.
"Where is your father?" Emily asked next, snapping Addison out of her thoughts.
"Dead," Addison responded quickly without thought.
Emily shook her head and pressed her lips into a tight line. "No," she said cautiously.
"That's a lot easier," Addison protested.
"And it's not the story," Emily added. She knew that Addison was aware of what she was supposed to say. She's had a tendency to make things more difficult than needed over the last 24 hours. At first, Emily chalked it up to travelling but maybe it was more than that.
Addison sighed loudly before answering. "Fine. He's still in New Mexico. The divorce was rough and you got full custody. He drinks," Addison explained begrudgingly in a monotone voice. She then ate the last bite of her toast and pushed the plate across the counter, towards Emily. She opened the dishwasher and placed it on the top rack.
Emily smiled, contented by Addison's answer. "Much better. Now, what's my job?"
Addison went back to sipping her coffee.
"You're between jobs. You were a detective, you worked in sex trafficking," Addison replied.
"Are you happy about this move?"
She shrugged her good shoulder. "How much time do you have?" she asked jokingly. She could make the best of this, but that would be easy and she was not one to take the high road.
"Addie," Emily scolded as she narrowed her eyes. There was a pang in her chest every time Addison protested the move and she didn't understand why. It was clear that Addison was unhappy with the situation but it hurt Emily to see it. She felt guilty for making her move but all Emily had ever wanted was a child and this was her chance to be a mom. How could she do that when the child she was trying to mother wanted nothing from her?
Addison leaned back in her seat and crossed her legs. "Like I said, Daddy's a drinker," she said, imitating the southern belle Scarlett O'Hara. "He's never hurt me, you'd never let him but he has a temper. It's better this way than being stuck with him." She batted her eyelashes and smiled as she stared Emily down. "Is that what you were looking for?" she asked after a moment of silence lapsed between them.
Emily's brow shot up. "You really played that one up."
"I have to be convincing right? Are we done here?" Addison asked, her voice laced with annoyance.
Emily sighed. "Yeah, we're done. I'll keep testing you later."
Addison took her cup off the counter and hopped off her seat to put it in the dishwasher. "I don't want to do this," she muttered as she placed it in the rack next to the plate and shut the dishwasher door.
"I know, I don't either but you'll get the hang of being this person. It becomes second nature pretty fast," Emily told her. "When you're in this house you can be whoever you want to be, but out there you need to be this person. You can't make mistakes."
"What if I make mistakes?" Addison asked nervously. She wasn't worried about herself but her fear lay with Emily, although she would never let it show. She knew nothing about her and had no idea what to expect when it came to her ability to lie.
Emily walked up behind Addison and placed her hand on the young girl's back. Addison stiffened at first but slowly allowed Emily's touch to soothe her as she rubbed soft circles on her back. "You won't but if you do, I'll be right there. For the next few weeks, we're going to be spending a lot of time together. You won't be doing this alone."
Addison turned to face Emily when she finally stopped speaking and Emily gave a soft but reassuring smile. She couldn't have Emily care about her, she didn't want any type of relationship between them other than professional. But as she stared into her eyes Addison could tell that Emily's care was genuine and that frightened her.
Addison continued to stare at Emily, not knowing how to respond.
"Okay go change, we should get going. We've got errands to do and I need to make a few more calls," Emily said after the silence drew into palpable tension. For a split second, Emily saw something that worried her. She expected to see fear in Addison's eyes but to her surprise, there was no sign of it. Her glances were steady and sure, giving Emily the impression that there was a lot more to the young girl than she ever expected.
Later that evening, the team gathered at Rossi's house. They had all unintentionally arrived early with the desire to discuss Emily's unexpected return before she showed up. They were all crowded around the kitchen counter with a drink in hand as they tried to theorize why their friend had come back.
Penelope Garcia sat, eyes wide as she stirred her drink. "I can't believe she's back, like really back. Is anyone else shocked?" she babbled.
Derek placed his hand on Garcia's stiff shoulders and massaged them, trying to relieve some of her anxiety.
"She probably missed her old partner too much," he said with a smirk to lighten the mood.
"I wouldn't blame her," Garcia teased in return as her tension was eased. She took a sip of her drink for the first time since she had arrived.
JJ shook her head at both of them as they laughed. "Something seemed wrong on the phone," JJ said seriously in an attempt to start the conversation.
Truthfully they had no idea what to expect but they had all sensed the apprehension in Emily's voice when she had called to arrange dinner. Emily had a tendency to get herself into trouble; regardless of how much JJ loved her, she couldn't overlook her reckless nature.
"What are you talking about? She's happy and she's got a kid. What could be wrong?" Derek said before grabbing the open bottle of red wine off the counter and filling JJ's glass to the brim, silently begging her to relax.
JJ shooed him away with her hand. She needed everyone to focus. "I don't know what it is but she didn't sound like herself. Am I wrong to assume that there is always more to the story?" she asked, shaking her head at herself this time for being distrusting. She looked to Rossi for answers.
He was stirring his sauce when he caught her regard. Rossi threw the tea towel he was holding to wipe his hands over his shoulder. "In most cases I would say yes but with our Emily, you're probably right," he said, treading cautiously as he glanced around the room to watch his teammates react. Some nodded in agreement while others were still unsure.
"I noticed it too JJ. It did sound like she was hiding something," Hotch chimed in after a moment to back JJ up.
Garcia could tell that JJ, Rossi and Hotch were weary of Emily's return, but Derek and herself were strongly supporting the positive possibilities. Reid however, was quiet, he had hardly spoken since he arrived and was clearly lost in thought.
Garcia scoffed as she watched sides start to form. "You profilers need to take a chill pill. She was probably tired from moving since, you know, she was living on another continent two days ago." She waved her hands as she spoke, trying to argue her point but based on the unconvincing looks exchanged between JJ and Hotch she was not being heard. She huffed in frustration before leaning forward and taking a large gulp of her drink.
Without looking up, Spencer finally added his thoughts to the conversation. To everyone's surprise, he was not concerned about the same things that they were.
"She must have known she was going to move for a while. Why didn't she say anything?" he asked sounding hurt.
He wasn't hung up on whether or not Emily had any form of ulterior motive to coming home, he just wanted to have a heads up. This wasn't the first time that she had made him feel this way. She lied when she took the fight to Doyle without warning and she blindsided him with her move to London after only being back a year. Now she was trying to come back into his life as nothing had happened. He didn't want to be mad but he was still raw.
"She said she was busy," Rossi tried to season. Emily was special to him, he would always give her the benefit of the doubt even when she didn't deserve it.
"Too busy to let your friends know that you're coming back?" Spencer said softly as he finally looked up at his friends.
"The kid's got a point. She could have let us know," Derek admitted regretfully.
"Are you giving her back her old job? Are we getting the band back together?" Garcia squealed in excitement as it dawned on her.
Hotch shook his head simply. "I was going to offer but I got the impression that what she wants right now is to spend some time with her daughter before she gets into anything serious," he explained.
"She'll be back. She can't stay out of the field for that long. She's a thrill-seeking junkie," Derek said as he chuckled and thought of all the good times they had spent kicking down doors together. Nothing got Emily more fired up than a raid.
"She should be here by now," JJ said as she glanced at her watch
"She did say 6 right?" Garcia asked as she checked her phone again. It was nearly 6:30 and yet there was no sign of Emily.
As if on cue, the doorbell rang and they all rose from their seats.
"That would be Emily. Late as usual," Rossi announced as he turned all of the stove elements to low before leaving the kitchen.
The door slowly opened and Emily was not surprised to see all of her friends hovering in the entryway. She smiled widely as they greeted her.
"Hi sorry, I didn't realize how long it would take to get here," she apologized as she moved out of the way of the door to allow Addison to enter. She then turned to close the door and moved on to help Addison remove her coat. She hung both the coats on a rack by the door and turned back to the team.
She was wearing a burgundy long sleeve shirt that was tucked into a plaid skirt and black tights. Her hair was tied up in a ponytail and she had on small diamond studs. This was not the type of outfit she would have chosen but her new wardrobe was not to her liking. She didn't put up a fuss about wearing it, however, it made her look innocent and she needed that tonight.
"Don't apologize just let me hug you. We missed you so much!" Garcia squealed as she threw her arms around Emily. She held tight for a moment as she rocked back and forth. She still couldn't believe that she was back.
When Garcia finally let go, Emily's eyes were visibly teary. "I missed you too, all of you," she said as she laughed at herself for being emotional. She quickly wiped her eyes and shook her head as she took a deep breath.
Rossi stepped forward and kissed both of her cheeks, making her smile once again. "Take your shoes off, stay awhile," Rossi said nonchalantly.
All the while, Addison was still standing by the door. She had backed herself into the corner and was hiding behind Emily as each stranger exchanged greetings with her. She was not shy by any means but she felt unwelcome. She tried her best not to stare by looking at the floor but from time to time she would catch their eyes. She only met their gaze for a moment but it was enough to make butterflies dance in her stomach.
Addison didn't notice Emily had turned to face her until she felt an arm reach around her back and pull her from her corner. At Addison's protest, Emily proudly moved Addison in front of her so that she could meet the team.
"Everyone, this is Addison," Emily beamed.
"I'm her charity case," Addison stated bluntly as she looked around the room seriously, gauging the strangers' reactions.
She felt small, with so many eyes fixated on her. She had been told that they were profilers and she expected them to try to read her, so she did her best to hide how uncomfortable she was with this interaction.
Emily placed her hand around Addison's upper arm and squeezed slightly to warn Addison not to act this way in front of her friends. She didn't want everyone to see that there was tension between them so Emily broadened her smile and let out a small laugh. "She's joking. I adopted Addison before I left London; we met while I was working a case."
"What, no accent?" Derek asked, directing his question at Addison. He was the first to speak to her.
Addison shrugged in response. "I'm no Brit," she said matter of fact with a slight sense of annoyance. Having had an American father raising her for most of her life, Addison had never developed any European accents although she was good at faking it if she needed to.
"Fair enough," Derek said feeling satisfied with her sassy answer. He could already tell that she was a bit of a spitfire.
The group slowly moved back into the kitchen as they spoke, each member of the team keeping a close eye on Addison as they did so. They had no reason to be suspicious of her but it didn't take a profiler to notice that she was unlike most teenagers. She had a very serious demeanor that concerned the team. She was smiling but she looked cold and distant as she took her seat at the farthest end of the counter and she made no attempt to join the conversation.
The team continued to share stories and updates about their lives in an effort to catch Emily up on the past year of their lives. Everything she had missed made her feel more guilty for leaving.
Reid stepped away from the group when there was a lull in the conversation. He slowly approached Addison, who was quietly looking through an old Rossi family cookbook that was sitting on the counter.
"Can you read that?" he asked as he peered over her shoulder as she flipped pages slowly. The text was all in Italian.
Addison nodded before closing the book. "Most of it, the handwriting isn't very clear."
She placed the book back where she had taken it from and leaned back in her chair. She turned to face Reid who was looking down at her with an air of astonishment at the fact that she was fluent in Italian. He towered over her but his mannerism was soft and non-threatening. So far she felt most comfortable with him. She knew what Emily expected of her and although she wanted to defy these expectations, the reality was setting in. She needed to be willing to make more of an effort if these people were going to be in her life for a while.
"You don't speak Italian?" Addison asked when he continued to stare. He was never great with words.
"No, I do but I didn't expect you would… Well, truthfully I don't know what I expected. I guess I should not be so surprised since you did grow up overseas," he babbled incoherently, making Addison crack the smallest of smiles. That small grin was the most anyone had gotten out of her all night.
"I picked up a few languages along the way," she admitted, faking modesty. She was fluent in several languages thanks to the rigorous homeschooling she had endured. She never followed any particular curriculum. Her father stressed the importance of languages, mathematics, and sciences but she fell short in her exposure to history and arts.
The rest of the team had paused their conversation to watch the young genius interact with Addison. Emily smiled fondly at the two of them, thankful that Addison was starting to let her guard down.
"What happened to your arm?" Spencer asked with genuine concern.
"I fell off my bike," Addison said simply.
It rolled off her tongue effortlessly making Emily's smile fade. Already, the lies were starting after she had begged Addison to be open with her friends.
"Oh you poor thing," Garcia cried before jumping out of her seat and running to give Addison a hug. She pulled Addison into a tight embrace while being cautious of the teen's injured shoulder. Over Garcia's shoulder, Addison looked around the room once again to see all eyes fixated on her. She started sinking into her chair when she caught the disappointment in Emily's eyes.
JJ noticed that Addison was uncomfortable but she attributed it to Penelope's over-affectionate ways.
"Where did you say you're from?" JJ asked trying to pull Addison out of her thoughts.
Addison looked to Emily for reassurance.
Emily nodded. "It's okay."
Once again Addison shrugged. "A little bit of everywhere," she replied plainly.
"Well that's one thing you two have in common," Spencer informed her as he let a small laugh loose.
"How so?" Addison asked sounding somewhat defensive. She didn't want to be compared to Emily, she would rather have nothing to do with her but she had no choice in the matter.
"You didn't know that Emily is the daughter of diplomats? She grew up all over the world," Spencer told her. He spoke to her like a friend, making her feel less like a child.
"I don't know very much about her," Addison admitted in response. She was finding out a lot of interesting things tonight.
"We're still getting to know each other," Emily said trying to defend herself. She felt like they were judging her for the lack of honesty in Emily and Addison's relationship. Had the team known that they had only been in each other's lives for a few weeks they would understand but this moment didn't feel right to spring the situation on them.
"If you want all the juicy gossip on your momma come to me. I have high school yearbook photos that would blow your mind," Penelope said with a big smile.
"She doesn't need to see those," Emily insisted.
"Oh I think I do," Addison said, her eyes were wide with excitement at the idea of uncovering who her new guardian really was.
Garcia quickly pulled her phone from her purse and started searching. She kept embarrassing photos of her teammates at her fingertips for when she needed something to brighten her day.
"Are you embarrassed Princess?" Derek teased.
Emily winced and he chuckled in response before giving her a nudge.
"I'm horrified. Please change the subject before I decide to move back to Europe," Emily whined. There was nothing she could do. Before she could react Garcia was handing her phone over to Addison.
Addison held the phone up and stared between Emily and the image. A cheeky smile crept onto her face.
"My name's Elvira, but you can call me tonight," Addison quoted the iconic line in a sultry teasing tone.
Emily groaned before leaning forward over the counter and burying her face in her hands, causing the room to break out into a roar of laughter.
