I can't say I'm flush with ideas but this one did pop up a few weeks ago so I let it flow, followed a few different paths & finally settled on this one.
It feels like just about everything that can be written has been so finding a new angle for #Burzek is a challenge. Let me know what you think.
Definition of a relationship – the way in which two or more people or things are connected, or the state of being connected.
Definition of their relationship - absolutely no fucking idea.
That's where they were at, completely clueless about where they were at, where they were going or what they wanted. It had been the hardest year of their lives, losing their baby and the reality that they may also lose their connection had thrown them for a loop. They 'dated' other people or at least tired too, but it was empty and soulless.
So they re-connected and that felt comfortable and easy and they agreed not to think too deeply about it, to feel their way through the weeds and maybe on the other side things might be clearer. Six months on they were still wading through the weeds.
Adam looked at the clock on the microwave and shook his head. She was late, which was unlike Kim. Punctuality was her middle name. Kim actually believed that being on time was actually akin to being late, five minutes early was 'on time'. It was now twenty past eight and Kim had sent him a message saying she'd be there by eight and he was starving.
Raising his arms above his head he tried to stretch. His abs felt tight. They'd had a tough arrest a few nights ago and he noticed the ache the next morning and put it down to over extending himself trying to catch their suspect. He hadn't run that much in months and it showed the next day when he could barely move. He really needed to get back out running again and get some miles into his legs.
Hearing the key in the lock he straightened up and turned his focus back to getting dinner ready. He'd made a potato bake to go with the steaks and just needed to cook the meat and put the veggies on. They were already cut up and in the microwave ready to hit start. "I thought you stood me up?" He glanced over his shoulder as Kim dumped her bag on the bench. "Hot date? Couldn't get rid of him?"
"Yes, he was very persistent. Wanted to run away and elope. We were going to join the circus."
"He's a clown?"
Kim rested her hand on his back and peered over his shoulder at the steaks. "Doesn't give me meat like you either. Sorry I'm late. Nicole had a crisis…" Adam glanced at her quickly. "Yes another one."
Things had gone off the rails for Nicole lately. Ever since her attacker was released from jail Nicole had struggled to cope with her rape. Having buried it there was no surprise that it had reared it's ugly head again and Kim had been her crutch. Adam had pointed out that Kim and Nicole were very similar in the way they dealt with things which had gone down like a lead balloon so he left it alone and focused on supporting Kim as she tried to help Nicole.
Even Kim was getting to the end of her tether. She was starting to realise that Nicole's issues were beyond her capabilities.
"She okay now?"
"I hope so, I'm going to go see her on the weekend. Do you mind?"
"Nope." Gradually they were starting to spend more time together than apart. Initially it was just every few weeks, they'd have dinner and it morphed into spending the night. Dinner was soon just the excuse. 'You feel like catching up for dinner?' was every few weeks and then it was once a week and now it was most weekends and the odd night during the week. Still, they never talked about defining what they were doing beyond being happy.
"You could come with me?"
Adam shot her a lopsided grin. Nicole may not exactly hate him anymore but he doubted she was ready to spend the weekend with him either. He had no idea if Nicole knew that they were seeing each other, however loose that definition was. He didn't ask. "I'll give it a miss."
"Thought you'd say that." She kissed his cheek. "Have I got time for a shower?"
"Nope." He winked. "Save that for after dinner. I'll wash your back."
"Always the gentleman."
Handing her the plates with the steaks on he grabbed the oven mitt. "I try Darlin'." Pulling out the potato bake from the oven he carried it to the table followed by Kim. He returned to the kitchen for the veggies while Kim grabbed the cutlery. They were in such a good groove.
Kim noticed that he grimaced as he sat down. "You really did pull a muscle didn't you?"
"I think so. It just gets a little stiff by the end of the day. A hot shower and a massage will work wonders. What with your magic fingers and all."
Adam sat and listened to Kim as she relayed her call with Nicole, he didn't offer any advice because he knew better than that. The few times he had offered up an opinion he was told that it had nothing to do with him. Being man dumb he just wanted to fix the problem, that's how his mind worked and it took a long time for him to figure out that Kim wasn't asking for him to fix the problem, she was just working through things out loud and his job was to shut up and listen.
"You okay?" Kim stopped when Adam hadn't said anything for a while.
"Yep." He nodded. "Just tired."
"I can go home."
Adam shook his head as he placed his knife and fork on his plate and leant back in his chair and watched Kim eat. She'd been talking so much she had barely eaten while he'd scoffed down his dinner. "No you can't."
Jumping up from the table he leant on hand on the back of Kim's chair and one on the table and bought his face close to hers. "We've got things to do." He kissed her softly. "Eat your dinner, you need the energy."
Kim smiled as she popped a piece of steak in her mouth and chewed it slowly. Adam was a basic cook but he did basic well. "You are confident."
"I know what I like, I know what you like." He gave her another quick kiss, hard and fast before walking away with his plate.
The hot shower did work wonders. If this was meant to be saving water they then failed because they were in there a while, making sure they were well and truly wet. It took time to wash each other thoroughly and explore well known and well-loved contours of their bodies. They fit together and this part of them worked together better than they'd worked with anyone else. It was all the other shit that they let take over that caused the problems. A lot could be said for letting the brain turn off and the body take over. That's where they hit their groove and right now they were not straying from that part.
Adam was drifting off the sleep but Kim wasn't done with him yet. Her mind was still whirring from talking to Nicole. She had successfully managed to push it aside while they were in the shower but now that they'd stopped her brain screamed into action again. She didn't know what to do about it, she didn't know how she could help her anymore. Feeling like she was failing her sister was an uncomfortable feeling.
To distract herself Kim touched him, hoping that she could focus on his warm skin, the steady rise of fall of his chest, the hardness of his abs. Her hand found its own path and Adam just relaxed and let her go. This was heaven as far as he was concerned, this is what he'd searched for relentlessly over the past four years and had never been able to find or replace. Perhaps that was the answer, it didn't need to be replicated it needed to be revisited. This was the place he would always come back to because this is where he felt safe and calm and in control. This was his anchor and without it he drifted into rough seas.
Kim's hand went south. Suddenly she realised she wasn't done just yet, she had more in her. She had an itch that needed to be scratched and she needed Adam to scratch it.
It was hard to explain but she felt him smile without even looking at him. "Careful darlin' don't start something I can't stop." He mumbled sleepily. Being tired and half asleep wasn't going to stop him though. His body was already reacting.
Pulling herself close into his side she kissed his chest, inching her way out until she licked one of his nipples.
Suddenly she stopped and propped herself up on her elbow. "Adam, this doesn't feel right."
