A little bit of Platt, just being Platt...
Adam just sat there, a little stunned. This was insane and all he could do was smile and nod.
"And these bags contain everything you need to make a healthy superfood smoothie, I'd suggest for breakfast each day. Just add milk…" She stopped. "…wait can you have milk? Are you lactose Intolerant? I read that sometimes that happens. I can get you coconut milk or almond milk, would that be better?"
"Nope." He shook his head. "No lactose Intolerance."
"Okay, so there is one for every day of the week for both of you. I've labelled them and they need to go into the freezer." She pushed them across the bench towards Kim who quietly took them and did as she was told. She certainly had labelled them, with their names and the date they should be consumed. Adam's were slightly larger than Kim's although she was worried about that because Kim ate like a horse at the best of times. That sent her off on a tangent about how bitter she was that Kim ate more crap than three men and still maintained her svelte figure and that she one day it would catch up with here. "I used to be a praying mantis like you." She mused.
Adam also might lose his appetite, but he really need to keep his strength up so should endeavour to finish it all. There was some mention of a weight in which he quickly kiboshed and suggested she focus.
The glare was short and sharp. "Anyway there is also some superfood powder, one scoop per smoothie should be plenty."
"Right, here are the lunches, plenty of soups and easy to eat light meals and also I've cooked a meal for the next few nights, I ran out of time I'll have the rest in a day or so and each page has instructions how to re-heat and what needs to be added fresh. You'll get a delivery of fresh fruit and vegetables every other day." Kim could barely hide the smile on her face when Adam was presented with a folder. "All the quantities are measured out so that it's the right balance of protein, vegetables and grains; ancient grains, whole grains the ones that help you know, keep things moving." She waved her hands around her stomach area. "None of that white rice crap. I did a lot of reading."
"So it seems." Adam shot a look at Kim who was completely bemused but leaving it to him while she stacked things in the freezer. "Thanks…Trudy."
When Kim told him that Platt was preparing food for them this was not quite what either of them expected. They thought they'd get a couple of frozen lasagne, maybe a cake or some cookies. This was next level and they shouldn't have been surprised. Platt was next level.
"Is there Hash Cookies anywhere in this feast?" Adam asked hopefully and he only did it to see what sort of reaction he'd get.
Platt reached across the bench and grabbed his arm. "Do you think you need them? I can arrange something." She whispered. He was expecting a swift backhander not to seemingly be involved in some seedy undercover drug deal.
"Ummm, just kidding." Adam was a little taken aback by her eagerness. "But, I wouldn't say no."
"Adam." Kim scolded him. She was such a goody two shoes sometimes. Platt just winked at him and honestly he wouldn't be surprised if he got a batch of hash cookies at some stage and that wouldn't be a bad thing.
Finally she unfolded another sheet of paper and pulled out a roll of tape and stuck it to the fridge.
"What's that?" Adam completely failed at trying not to sound freaked out.
"A roster. I called Voight and Atwater and we worked out a more logical roster for picking you up from your treatments. They were more than happy to spread the load."
"It's only five days." Adam peered at the newly designated roster. "And you are down for three days, wow Sarge. That's great."
"Just because you are going through something doesn't give you carte blanche to still be obnoxious." Platt scoffed. "Show a little grace and humility."
"I have my junk taped to my stomach every day…."
This whole thing had smacked the humility out of him.
She held up her hand. "I am actually really surprised she hasn't smothered you." Platt pointed to Kim. "Like really, really surprised."
"Seriously, we really appreciate it. Honestly." He tapped the binder. "This will help get us through this last week."
"Yes, well…" Platt gathered up her things. "I'll see you both tomorrow."
Kim showed her out and even got a little hand squeeze as she left. That was about the most she'd get in public, not that Adam could be considered 'public'. He was on the couch flicking through the folder that Platt had pulled together. "She's really done some research." He muttered. "Some of this stuff looks…well interesting."
A healthy rounded well-nourished diet was never top of his list of priorities although they had eaten better in the past few weeks and cut out a lot of crap but Platt had taken it to another level. Things were activated, super food rich, anti-oxidants and completely GMO free. It was way over the top and actually really, really sweet and thoughtful.
Adam suggested that they buy her something to say thank-you and sent her flowers and made sure the note made it clear who they were from. It served a few purposes, it thanked her without making it all soppy which she would hate and hopefully it would put her in a good mood and she'd be nice to some poor hapless Patrol Officers for a good half hour at least.
'My Super-food Super Hero. Thank you. We kinda like you.'
It still made him nervous though to come out of his treatment and find Platt sitting in the waiting room. "How'd you go?" She tossed the magazine back onto the table. "The reading material here leaves a lot to be desired."
"I'll let them know." Adam shrugged into his jacket. "I'm good to go."
It was a little awkward and it didn't help that Adam bought up their 'date' many years ago. He didn't know what else to talk about. He was worried she was going to ask him too many details about his cancer and everything he'd been through already. He'd talked about his junk a lot lately, more than he ever thought he would and the last person he wanted to have this conversation with was Trudy Platt. He wasn't ready for the bluntness she'd no doubt bring to the table.
"I was right though wasn't I?"
"How's that?"
"You were so into Burgess it wasn't funny."
He laughed. "Yeah, I guess so. Still am."
"You always have been, I will never for the life of me understand why you've been such an idiot about it?"
"Me either." He shrugged. "Wounded pride I guess. Maybe this is a good thing, finally drummed some sense into me."
"And her too. You weren't the only dumb stubborn one." Platt nodded in agreement. "This does seem a little extreme though don't you think?"
Adam couldn't argue with that one. He could've done without this.
Trudy heated him up some Vegetable and Barley soup and he promised to eat it and that she didn't need to sit and watch him.
She also pulled a small plastic box out of her bag. "What's this now?" Adam pulled it towards him and opened the lid and laughed. "You didn't?"
"Hide it from your woman. She's such a cop sometimes."
"How?"
Platt just tapped her nose and said nothing. He had no idea how she even got hold of cannabis or had time to make a batch of cookies but he was looking forward to trying them out. Platt was such a mystery but when it came to her people she was equally fierce and a softie at heart.
"You know, you are my favorite cop."
"Oh stop it." Trudy pretended to be coy. "Really?"
"You know it." Adam winked at her.
It had knocked him around though and as soon as Trudy left he crashed for the afternoon and by the time Kim got home from work, a little later than she hoped he was up and sitting on the couch playing video games and looking worse for wear. He'd made himself get out of bed, he wanted to be up when Kim came in because if he was still in bed she'd freak out.
Kim slipped her arms around his neck from behind and kissed him behind his ear. "Platt told me you were a good boy."
"Have a good gossip did you?"
"We did." Kim ran her hand through his hair. "How was it?"
"I feel a bit shitty to be honest." Kim felt his forehead. "Just tired and feel like I am going to hurl."
"Have you been sick?"
"Yeah, once or twice. Only when I eat. That Vegetable and Barley Soup looked just as bad coming out as it did going in." He reached for Kim's had as it slid down his chest. "I'm okay, I was just waiting up to see your pretty face and now I'm going to go to bed."
"Do you want me to call the Clinic?" They had an afterhours number they could call if they were worried about anything.
"No I don't want you to call the clinic. I need to sleep and I'll be fine tomorrow."
"I can take the day off?"
That was the last thing Adam wanted. He was pretty sure it was just a bad day and they'd overdone it on the weekend. They'd gone for a drive yesterday and then a long walk along the edge of the lake and had stayed up late watching a movie. Kim had been worried he was pushing himself too hard trying to be normal but he refused to listen and was probably paying for it today.
Whether Adam was feeling better or not the next day he certainly wasn't going to let on. He was starting to worry that they would pause his treatment if he said he was feeling unwell and he really wanted it to be over. Surely he could last four more days.
Kim made him his smoothie before she left and watched him force it down. "You'd tell me if you didn't feel well right?"
"Of course." He winked. "Kim, I am fine. I'm tired and not looking forward to the next four days. I feel like it's building up, which they said it would. I was just hoping I'd be the one to avoid all the side effects."
"We just aren't that lucky hey?" Kim hugged him quickly. She was running late and still needed to have a shower before dropping him off on her way into the District. Voight was picking him up and bringing him home today.
"One day we will be."
Adam pushed on and did his best to smile through it all. He felt like he'd been hit by a train and when Voight asked him some very specific questions he snapped. "Burgess give you a list or something?"
"You should count your lucky stars that you've got someone like Burgess looking out for you." Voight wasn't putting up with any crap today and he wasn't letting him wallow in misery. Feeling sorry for yourself didn't do anyone any favours. "Pull your head in."
"I know, shit, I know. It's no walk in the park though is it? It's still happening to me, I'm the one getting fried every day." He closed his eyes and rode the bumps. "I really do appreciate everything everyone is doing, honestly and Kim has been amazing. I'm just feeling a little sorry for myself today."
"Fair enough." And Voight couldn't blame him, it was a huge shock and a frightening experience for anyone. "It's not going to drag on though is it?" He'd watched his wife struggle to get up every day because she couldn't see any way out and he pandered to her, almost encouraged her to feel sorry for herself and in the end she just stopped fighting, he wasn't letting that happen again.
"Nope. Just today."
He was determined to show Kim that he was fine and had dinner ready when she came in complete with candles and sparkling water instead of champagne and they enjoyed a romantic dinner. It was a nice break from the mundane life they'd been living and designed to put Kim's mind at ease. Despite looking like shit Adam smiled and flirted with her all evening.
It was only a brief respite though.
Kim looked at her phone quickly when it rang. They were knee deep in a case and running the board and she was waiting for a message from Platt to say that Adam was safely at home so to see her phone ringing made her jump and her heart race. She quietly slipped out of the bullpen into the hallway to take the call.
Voight saw her come back looking as white as a sheet and just nodded that she could go and indicated that Atwater should go with her. It didn't go unnoticed by everyone else and it was rapidly becoming an issue that couldn't remain a secret for much longer. He had flagged it with Adam yesterday, that perhaps it was time to let everyone else in but Adam refused. He didn't want pity and he wanted to come back to work and carry on with life like nothing had happened. As far as he was concerned this was like any injury, nobody cared once you recovered and that's what he wanted.
Halstead quickly cornered his boss before they were heading out to chase a lead. "What's going on?"
"Nothing that you need to worry about."
"You know secrets in this place have a habit of biting us all on the ass."
"You'd know something about that wouldn't you?" Voight wasn't having this, it's not like Halstead was a cleanskin, he'd caused him more than enough headaches. "Haven't you got something to do?"
Trudy was pacing in the waiting room when Kim busted through the door of Chicago Med closely followed by Atwater. The ride over had been quick, Kev had no qualms in hitting the lights and sirens. Atwater was worried about both of them, Kim was wound so tight
"Where is he? Is he okay? What happened?"
