Epilogue
The little girl sat up in bed, staring through her window into the night.
She'd just woken up from the oddest of dreams, and it played through her head as she watched the stars twinkle in the distance.
A boy and a girl were sitting side by side at the beach.
"We need to decide, Pen." the boy, who had dark curly hair, said. His voice was half sad and half
decisive.
"I know" the girl, Pen, answered. Her dark wavy hair was glinting purple in the moonlight, and she played with the sand at her feet, scooping it up and then letting it fall through her fingers again.
Neither of them said anything for a moment.
Then, Pen looked at the boy with an intent gaze.
"We deserve a life, Leo." she said, and her voice was completely steady.
The boy called Leo contemplated her, not saying anything. She elaborated.
"You spent half your life running away and the other half fighting unimaginable evils. That's not what a life is supposed to be like."
The waves of the ocean lapped against the shore, leaving little trails of moist sand as they receded back to where they came from.
"And you?" Leo asked, playing with a strand of Pen's hair.
She took his hand and held it in both of her own.
"I want a chance at life, Leo. I want to know what it's like to grow up, have parents, go to school and all the stuff that comes with it. I want to be a normal person, go into town, meet people, get a job, all of it. And I can't do that in the underworld"
Silence followed the girl's confession. When she spoke again, her voice wavered a little. "I know it's selfish to think like that. But I honestly believe that it would be the best for both of us, not only me."
Leo looked at her, long and hard.
"I agree" he finally said, and Pen shot him a sharp look. "You do?" she asked, her voice filled with suppressed hope.
"Yeah, I do. I would give anything for you to get the life you deserve, Penelope. And to be honest I wouldn't mind another shot myself. It's just-" he broke off, looking out at the ocean.
Pen seemed to know what he was thinking.
She shifted so that she was blocking his view of the water, leaning in close until their foreheads rested against each other.
"I love you." she told him. "I love you more than I could ever love anyone, regardless which life I lead. Yes, we might find other people we love. We won't recall our previous life anymore. But Leo," here she took his head into both of her hands "I promise, I know, that we'll always find a way back to each other. We'll meet again on the Isle of the Blessed, and then nothing will be able to tare us apart. We'll remember again. I promise."
They gazed into each others eyes for a very long time.
Then Leo put his hands over hers and whispered. "I'll keep you to that promise, you know."
Pen laughed, her turquoise eyes shining. "I wouldn't expect anything else from you."
They stood up together, holding tightly onto each other, knowing that they would soon have to let go.
Behind them, the moon shone brightly as Leo leaned down and kissed Penelope, lingering, and it was obvious they were both saving the moment, so that one day they would find each other again.
A strange and eery light started to glow around them, making the outlines of their bodies unfocused and bright.
"I love you, Leo Valdez." Penelope said, her eyes fixed on his face, as if desperate to burn the image into her mind.
"I love you too, Penelope Rider." Leo whispered back.
The light glowed blindingly bright, and when it faded there was nothing left but the ocean with the moon's reflection sparkling on its surface and the sand on the beach.
The small girl shook her head, her light brown hair swinging a bit.
It was such an odd dream to have. Her mouth turned down at the thought of the boy and girl kissing. Yuck! She'd never kiss a boy, not in a million years.
If she ever did, she would have to wash her mouth afterward.
As the moon made it's way across the heavens, the little girl finally grew sleepy again, forgetting the dream completely, never to think of it again.
When she lay down on her pillow, she smiled as she remembered that her mummy had promised to take her to the cinema tomorrow.
For hours after she'd dozed off, the soft glow of the light in the sky continued to shine upon her face like a caress, illuminating the child's skin and her little mouth, which twitched as she dreamed of the life ahead of her.
She could hardly wait.
Okay, so that was pretty emotional. I literally had to stop myself from crying a bit.
This story means so much to me personally, and I can't express how amazing you all are.
The first scene I ever had in my head of Leo and Penelope was their dance at the very end, although back then it was in a different place and the plot was completely different, but I love the way it turned out, thanks to you guys!
So:
Thank you for following.
Thank you for favouriting.
Thank you for reviewing.
But most of all, thank you for reading this, and accepting Penelope as a part of this story.
Everyone who's stuck with me, and those who haven't, I appreciate you ALL and yeah, I am so happy you chose this fic to follow :)
Okay, so if you liked this story, keep a look-out for my new ones, there should be two up and running soon enough!

P.S.: I'm thinking of doing a one shots story in which Penelope makes an appearance as well.
Kind of AU, as in they didn't die (obviously). Like the idea? Oh yeah, and of course: I don't own PJO/HoO :3
Random question: What was your favourite scene of "The Light in the Sky" ? :)
