How Unfortunate

(Let's just say this is an AU where hearts and minds doesn't end quite the same or something)

The stars shone bright in the night sky, the streets were peaceful, and only a few windows still had their lights on. It all would have been a perfect night, if it wasn't for the sobbing. A streetlight blared down onto a yellow pomeranian, struggling to stand against the emotional weight she looked to be bearing. She was huddled over the base of the lamp post, in front of a fine Italian dining establishment. A black cat wandered in the distance. She hoped he wouldn't come over to her

"Tarot!" he shouted, "Where are you? Please stop running from me, we need to talk!"

Tarot ignored him, and tried to make herself seem smaller, she didn't want him to notice her. Hopefully he would just keep on going. If she could just calm herself down, she would be able to see whether he would stop there or not, but that wasn't going to happen, she was just going to have to see what the future held for her while it happened, just like regular folks.

"There you are!" He exclaimed, somewhat relieved, "You really threw me for a loop there, I've been trying to find you for close to an hour!"

"Can't you take a hint!" She retorted "Maybe there's a reason I didn't go to you! Maybe I just want to be left alone right now! Cheese and Crackers! I just need time right now!"

"Maybe you just need someone to talk to. I know you broken up about thi-"

"I'M FINE" she yelled, "I'm fine." She didn't want to be reminded of what happened. She wished she could just pretend that everything was still fine, she wished that dragon was still with her, so she could have prevented it, not that it would've worked anyway.

"Listen, I know you're hurting, I've gone through this before. I thought me and Grape were going to last together forever too, but we're just looking through things with rose colored glasses, the flags were there, I mean, you saw how they were!"

"They said it was just a bit of mushiness!" Tarot snapped

Max looked a little taken aback "Yeah, and you looked ok with it, if I recall. You knew they were doing that before I did."

"Well… I didn't think that this would happen" Tarot looked down. How could she have been so foolish. She didn't foresee this happening, How couldn't she have seen this coming. She was supposed to be a psychic for dragon's sake! But, it took her by surprise. When Peanut invited her into the living room that night with a serious expression on his face for maybe the first time in his life, that was surprising. When he sat her down on the couch and she realized that max was there too, that was surprising. But it was nothing compared to what they said

"You guys have been really good to us" Grape said.

"And I couldn't have asked for a better girlfriend! And I love you." Peanut said, "But," He paused. Of course he paused, Tarot knew then that something was up, but even she couldn't predict the next four words to come out of his mouth.

"I love Grape more."

That was when her heart broke, she didn't know what happened next. First she was yelling, the max was, then Peanut was, and she didn't even know that was possible. Next thing she knew, she was running out the door, and people were following here. Now she was here, and Max was making her think about all of this again.

"Listen, I know it's tough, you guys have been together for how long now? Like 11 years? Thank doesn't seem right. Anyhow, It'll be ok in the end, we'll move on eventually." Max said, trying to comfort her.

"How can you say that! Like it didn't happen to you too! How are you not torn up by this! You two were together for even longer than us, if even just by a little bit, if that meant nothing to you, it didn't to me!"

Max glanced down, and rubbed his foot into the ground. The shadows obscured his eyes.

"No, I do feel bad. I feel hurt. I feel betrayed. But you have to move on, that's one thing rufus taught me. You can't let life keep you down, you have to pick yourself back up. No matter how bad you've been hurt. You just have to keep on moving. Keep on going." He looked up sheepishly "You just have to."

Tarot stood up. She avoided eye contact with him, she knew she'd been a little bit too harsh on him. Implying that he didn't care was a little bit of a low blow. She still hurt, but she shouldn't bring him down with her.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said you didn't care about her. You were together for a long time. I know you two had a good relationship, I'm sorry, I didn't think that I would react this way. You don't deserve it and…" she had trouble getting out her words over her quivering lips, she couldn't see Max so well either, the tears were rushing back, threatening to break through her mental dam. "And, neither did I!" Tarot was full on bawling now. Her words rushed out of her faster than her tears.

" I didn't deserve him! He always accepted everything! He was always so nice! I didn't do anything like that! Of course I lost him!" She cried, barely coherently. She didn't know what was going to happen now, what if no else would love her, what if she ended up as a shut in? Everything seemed like it was collapsing around her. Her thoughts were racing, when a paw reached out to comfort her.

"Woah woah woah, that's not what I wanted to hear. You put just as much work into that relationship as Peanut did, It's not that you didn't deserve it, it just didn't work out, just like me and… Grape. Listen, I don't know what we're gonna do with them, or how being friends with them is going to work now. But, why don't we go out to eat, you and me, take our mind off things. You're an alright person yourself you know." Max said, modestly. He held out his hand to her.

Tarot gave it a thought, she was hungry, and she wanted to take control of her own feelings again. It really wasn't a hard choice. She took the hand.

"Sure, let's do it."

As they walked away front that solitary bastion of light in a lonely street, and into the restaurant. They ignored the odd looks that the patrons gave them, and their hands held by one another, they sat down at a table and ordered themselves some food. They got spaghetti, they gorged themselves, they drank, they ran out on the check. If a stranger had seen them then, running away from the owner because they didn't have any money, he would've said they looked happy. He would've been right too.
