Chapter 3 - Everything is fine.
Ok, so, May knows that Peter is Spiderman per usual, so just roll with it.
Peter tapped on the holographic model and an ironman suit built itself like legos on the platform in front of him. He had been working in the lab with Mr Stark for 2 weeks now, and they had been trying out nanotech for the suit.
He walked up to the armour, and tapped its surface, as soon as his finger made contact with the material it collapsed, then rebuilt. Peter sighed.
"Damn, I thought that would work this time," Peter said, tired from working so long.
"Yeah, good job on finding out how to make it self assemble though. We just need to find out how to make it stick."
Peter played with a pen, biting on the end of it.
"What if its mental?"
From across the room he heard Mr Stark jump up from his chair.
"Its mental! What if we used-"
"An electroencephalogram!" They both shouted at the same time.
They both rushed to the work station.
"No no, I want to do it, I came up with it!" Peter yelled.
"Kid, you said one sentence I came up with the rest!"
Peter was about to start typing into the display when Mr Stark grabbed his wrist.
"Listen here old man-" Peter started.
"Old man?!"
"Whoops just slipped out. Anyway-"
"What is happening here?" Came a new voice from the door. Mr Stark and Peter spun around to see Pepper standing with 3 boxes of large pizzas.
"Pepper! Um…"
"I don't even want to know. I ordered you two some pizza, here. Reminder, it is 9pm, you need to finish up by-"
"10, yes we know." Mr Stark finished.
He took the pizzas from her and said, "Thank you, Ms Potts! I was starving!"
Mr Stark gaped, "How are you so nice to her and not to me?"
"Maybe he just likes me more than you," replied Pepper.
Peter laughed at Mr Starks face.
"Are you sure you can't stay over Peter?" Pepper asked.
"No sorry, I don't think May likes me going to the tower, or anything related to Spiderman, she's glad this is just an 'internship' rather than patrolling."
It was true, after May had found out about Spiderman, she took away his suit and had an argument with Mr Stark. Basically, she embarrassed him so much that he couldn't face Mr Stark without going red for like, a week.
After some compromise, and a long talk with Mr Stark they came to the decision that he was not allowed to go out patrolling without May's permission. May made a curfew, and after a long chat she allowed him to do the internship.
Peter knew that May didn't like Mr Stark, but he thought she was warming up to him.
The three of them sat down while they ate. Peter finished his pizza in record time as usual and started to eat a second.
"Thank you so much Ms Potts."
"Peter, I've told you this so many times, please just call me Pepper."
"Yeah kid, I hate being called Mr Stark."
"May always tells me to never call an adult by their first name! Speaking of May, can you please convince her to let me patrol until 12? She wants me to stop at 10pm but that's hardly enough time."
"Listen kid, you should've heard the lecture she gave me on the phone when she found out, I swear, she doesn't like me. I've got no influence here."
Peter inhaled the second pizza, sat up, thanked Ms Potts and then sprinted to the lab. He really wanted to finish planning out the nanotech before he left.
Mr Stark appeared a minute later behind him.
Peter typed in a draft code for stabilizing the nanotech and proceeded to test it.
"Ok, I'm sure I got it this time."
Mr Stark stayed silent as he read his coding.
"I think you're giving me a run for my money. Except you did the structure wrong."
"Damn it," Peter heard Mr Stark typing.
"Ok fixed it, other than that you did great."
The nanotech started to build the suit. Once it formed, Peter stepped up, and touched the surface, it held.
"Wow, it feels just like metal."
"Can you kick it?"
Peter turned to face Mr Stark, baffled.
"What?"
"kick it, we need to test its durability against force."
"Ok…"
Peter aimed a light kick at the suits leg, and… it fell apart. As soon as it fell, it formed back.
"Ok, well we made progress, but you gotta get going, I don't want May and Pepper after me."
"Awww. Don't solve it before I come back on Wednesday ok? Promise?"
"No promises."
Tony was pretty tired, he only went to bed at 4am yesterday after his time with Peter, and he felt like a rock when he woke up at 10 that morning.
After getting up and making a shit ton of coffee, he sat down in the lounge to drink it, when Pepper ran through the room to find him.
"Tony! You've got to see this." She flipped on the tv, where Ross was making a speech.
"I have been having frequent meetings with the UN these past 2 weeks, and we have resolved the debate concerning the enhanced, individuals that own technology that gives them enhanced abilities and people with extraordinary skills.
Due to their unknown origins and unpredictable nature, enhanced individuals will have to be registered according to a new segment in the Sakovia Accords. They will have their fingerprints, blood and powers examined, as well as their identity filed. This information will not be released to the public due to privacy concerns. All enhanced vigilantes that are not registered will be arrested. Are there any questions?"
A reporter responded, "Will the enhanced need to sign the accords? Or just registrate?"
"At the moment, they will not have to sign no-"
Tony shut the tv off, his breathing shallow.
"Why wasn't I invited to any of these meetings."
"We didn't know they were happening, apparently Ross felt like you had a biased opinion- Tony? Tony calm down."
He couldn't breathe, Pepper's face was starting to blur.
"Rhodey? Rhodey you need to come dow-"
He couldn't hear Pepper anymore, just the sound of his own shallow breathing.
Peters phone rung, and he picked it up, still blurry eyed from sleep. The time was 10:40.
Blinking rapidly to erase the blurriness from sleep he noticed he had 27 miscalls from Ned, and a few from Mr Stark.
Peter sat up, he was alone in the house at the moment, May having already gone to work.
He checked Ned's texts.
'PETER TURN ON THE TV'
'Peter, are you ok'
'PETER'
'IM FREAKING OUT'
'HAS MR STARK CALLED YOU'
'Call me BACK YOU DUMBO'
Mr Stark left no messages, just phone calls.
He called Ned, who answered immediately.
"PETER, ohmygod dude where have you been!"
"Asleep, its Sunday-"
"Have you seen the news? They've been running the same story all morning."
"No, whats going on?"
"Ross, he's made registration a law, if enhanced people don't registrate they will be arrested, so technically Spiderman is a criminal right now."
"Ned… are you serious? Oh god, I gotta call Mr Stark…"
Tony didn't want to talk about his episode, he wanted to fucking murder Ross.
He'd been calling Peter all morning, he wasn't answering.
He was at the compound, in a flashy new suit about to meet with some UN officials. UN shitheads look like they should come out of a ghostbusters movie, the slimeballs.
So far, he'd been on the phone with everyone but Ross, the man choosing to weasel his way out.
He felt his phone buzz, and picking it up he saw it was Peter.
"Pete! Are you ok? Have you seen the news?"
"Ye-yeah im ok and yeah I saw the news. Whats gonna happen? Am I gonna have to reveal my identity?"
"No, no, ill make sure Ross never gets his hands on you. Stay where you are, don't go out as spiderman. I know you never listen to me, but please Peter."
"Ok, I promise."
He hung up the phone, and called May.
"Hello?" Came her voice.
"May, hi its Tony Stark."
"Oh, right. Wait, is Peter ok? Nothing happened? Is he hurt? I swear to god Stark I will stuff you in a barrel if anything has-"
"Wooow, that got real dark. Hold on Hannibal, nothing has happened to Peter, but I needed to warn you, have you seen the news?"
"The news? No, I'm at work."
"Ok, Secretary Ross has ordered that all enhanced must subject themselves to registration.
"Registration? That means the government will know who Spiderman is?"
"Yes."
"Stark! What the hell! This was supposed to not happen. Is Peter ok? He won't have to do that right?"
"I'm sorry, I tried but Ross is an asshole. Don't worry, Peters fine, and the governments not going to get him, I need you to stop him from Spidermanning though."
"Ok, no suit no anything, Stark, are you sure he's going to be ok?"
"Don't worry, we'll play this really safe, Ross won't ever find out about him."
"Thank you."
"Don't mention it sweetheart."
"I'm sorry Mr Stark, there is nothing we can do. This new registration program is testing in the US, and then expand to eventually the rest of the UN countries."
Tony was sitting in one of the conference rooms at the compound, a couple of UN representatives sitting in front of him. Thankfully, Pepper sat next to him, which was the only thing keeping him sane.
"This is immoral! You should've heard Ross, governments have too much power if they have the identities of the enhanced, they will abuse this information!" He spoke.
"That is why the UN is creating strict protocols to protect the enhanced. So far we are investigating recent sightings of abilities being used without a permit, don't worry, they will be protected. For many of these individuals, the UN can help them gain control of their powers."
"I need to be involved in this, why wasn't I invited to any of the meetings?"
"Yes, I think we need that question answered how we weren't notified about any meetings at all," replied Pepper.
"Secretary Ross and the rest of the committee concluded that you had an extremely biased opinion, and concerning your previous outbursts during the meetings we decided that it would be better suited that you were not present during the planning of this."
"That is bullshit!"
"Tony," Pepper clutched his arm, "We do agree that that decision should have been notified to us, and that we should've been given information about this in advance."
"We are apologetic of this, but this new addition to the Sakovia Accords has already been signed off, we are only here to notify that you have already been registered."
"Apologetic! People's lives are being affected and all you can do is be apologetic?"
"Tony, calm down-"
"This is the beginning of government experimentation, projects like the Winter Soldier will start. I hacked into the Pentagon in high school on a dare, you think some people won't hack into the government to get some names?"
"Mr Stark, we have every protection concerning-"
He put out his hand to shut him up, he got out his phone, ran his program and pulled up all the information UN had on enhanced. Videos of people with powers came up, people controlling fire, manipulating minds. He showed his screen to the UN representatives.
"There, I just hacked the UN, on my phone. That was just about the easiest thing I've ever done. You think other people won't do that? Get peoples information and exploit their powers?"
There was complete silence.
"Call me when you actually have a bright idea will you?" He was fed up with dumbasses thinking they can control people with big smiles and an apology. Fuck politicians.
As he left the room, jumping in the elevator and riding it to his lab. He felt bad for leaving Pepper in there with the UN people, but she would clean it up.
He pulled up his phone again, still seeing the UN files about the Accords he started to flip through them.
He hadn't dared to hack into the files before, things already tense enough with him and the committee.
"FRI, check anything on these files about Spiderman."
"There are 29 areas highlighted that have information about Spiderman."
Holy Shit.
"Pull em up FRI."
They appeared on his table as a hologram, he started to read them.
'Spiderman: 5'7", male.
Appears only between the time span of 1600-0300.
Unregistered.
If any sightings of 'Spiderman' occur, do not engage, is considered highly dangerous. Report this sighting immediately and wait for reinforcements to engage."
This was bullshit. Peter dangerous? Reinforcements? No chance. Spiderman helped the community, he had an avid fan base, he was a hero.
Peter needed to lay low for a while. The rest of the files were all newspaper articles, all photos and news reports of him.
There were also witness accounts. He felt his phone ring, and the name Ross appeared on his screen. He contemplated ignoring him, but this was too important.
"Ross."
"Stark. I heard you had a tantrum and left the meeting."
"Small disagreement on whether you used small condoms or extra small."
"Very funny Stark, but this is a business call."
"Well, spit it out."
"Spiderman, give him up."
Tony's heart lurched, but his voice stayed steady.
"I don't know his identity dumbass."
"You worked with him in Germany! If you don't give him up, we're going to make more violent measures to get him to sign."
"Fuck you." And he hung up. Fuckfuckfuckfuck. They were already making measures to look into Peter. He needed to get Peter to the compound, now.
